The pristine white of the clouds, the azure and sea-foam blues of the waves and the soothing neutrals of the sands of Carmel Beach are the colors that predominate in this bright two-bedroom, two-bath retreat that is situated a bit lower than the street and secluded behind a bank of ivy. As you enter the property you are greeted by a terraced front yard area that is set up with lawn furniture perfect for relaxing with a book on a warm sunny day.

The front door opens to a light-filled living room with two large picture windows, a dark taupe sofa with chaise, comfortable chairs, an area rug and a 42-inch flat-screen TV for movie watching after a long day of taking in the local attractions.

A glass table with four chairs off the kitchen allows you to enjoy at home meals prepared in the spotless white kitchen, fully equipped with a stainless-steel gas range, refrigerator, dishwasher and microwave, has everything you need to prepare gourmet meals and entertain. Step out from the kitchen through glass doors to a deck furnished with an umbrella, a wooden table and chairs for four and a grill for enjoying al fresco meals on those days when you just can’t get enough of the outdoors. A Japanese maple graces a small back yard, which is fully enclosed should you want to bring your well-behaved dog.

The master bedroom, which has a trio of floor-to-ceiling windows that look out to a narrow deck and greenbelt of oaks, has two gray end tables and a king with memory foam topper that converts to two twins. The luxury bedding in colors of the sea will remind you that the Pacific Ocean is just minutes away. The palest of sea-foam-green tiles are used on the floor and in the shower of the master bath.

A second bedroom off the living room has a queen bed. Beautiful bedding in sea-foam colors is provided. A second recently updated bathroom with pale taupe tiles has a farmhouse sink and a tub/shower.

A stacking washer and dryer are provided. There is on-and-off-street parking.

cramped and old

  • 1 of 5

This is listed as a charming beach cottage, and it is decorated adorably. However, we had problems with the showers and sinks backing up, Rotor Rooter fixed that. We also had the raw sewage flow out into the yard from the back flow not being maintained. The "home" is 740 square feet, and there wasn't room for us to unpack our suit cases for our month long stay. The home was 60 years old, and the floors were all slopping, and because only one window opened and it didn't have a screen, we weren't able to get fresh air in there. A little claustrophobic due to the low ceilings. Parking is the pits. We have a truck and had to back it down the narrow slopped dirt driveway. Would have a hard time using the front of the house for parking as none of the neighbors have garages either, and all have numerous cars. The streets are extremely narrow and without sidewalks....yes, quaint...

We just sold my Mother's home in Carmel Valley, and for the first time in my whole life had to rent in order to spend time in Carmel...I think for the price, we would be better off staying at a really nice hotel for a few weeks next time we come.

But on the bright side, it is a good location, we were able to walk to both Sunset Beach and the 8th street Beach, and walk downtown. and maybe my less than positive review due to the fact we had a lot of rain...thanks El Nino, and were not able to get out and ride bikes, and golf as much as we wanted.

Sanctuary Rentals was very responsive to the home's issues.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review. It was unfortunate that you did have to deal with a few plumbing issues during your stay. With the drought conditions that California has experienced over the past few years the roots of trees and bushes have had to travel long ways to find any form of moisture. Due to the age and location of the house in the Monterey Peninsula, it has been an incredible year for problems with houses and their plumbing - this has nothing to do with this specific house but something that was a big problem everywhere this year, not just endemic to one house in Carmel. As to the other issues with respect to size and 'character', we feel we have accurately portrayed the house on our website in these manners. Carmel is a very unique town as you know, so the narrow streets and tiny parking area's were all from a day long ago. The local residents who live there year round made decisions a long time ago to retain the 'charm' of the town - and obviously we all have a different version of what that means. We are glad you enjoyed your experience with Sanctuary and how quickly we were able to react to your problems you had to deal with. Staying in a hotel for a few weeks may rightfully be the place best suited for your wants and needs, however we know that we get hundreds of renters a year in these older houses that love the experience and what that entails. Fortunately we all have choices we can consider and find a happy medium for all. It is unfortunate that you chose to poorly rate this house due to some plumbing issues which were dealt with immediately, when in the last paragraph it seems the steady rain we experienced during your time in Carmel caused a considerable amount of the angst during your stay. Thanks again for choosing Sanctuary...
