About Rob and Luana Wilbur

We are the Wilburs.

Grandparents: Lysle & Ruth

Parents: Rob & Luana (current property owners)

Children: Ryan & Amanda (son and his wife) & Morgan (daughter)

We (Rob & Luana) broke ground on this property in 1992. We completed and spent our first night in the main house on Christmas Eve, 1993. In 2002 we added the flagstone patio, mudroom, and garage. In 2003, we paved the driveway.

Our plan was to raise our children (Ryan and Morgan) here and succeeded in doing so from 2001 - 2009. Unfortunately, work sent us back to San Diego in 2009 and we now rent out our dream home to share with others until we can return. Our children (now grown) have amazing childhood memories here and love to return whenever possible. Morgan currently attends Husson University in Bangor fulfilling her dream to return to Maine for the next step in her education. Ryan (and his new wife) are currently stationed at Kings Point, Long Island as part of the US Coast Guard family and they make the drive up whenever they can.

The whole family tries to unite "Out to Camp" for 1-2 weeks a year to spend time together and perform maintenance and improvements on the property. It is always a "working vacation" and as a log home, it is most certainly a labor of love.

Why Rob and Luana Wilbur chose Ellsworth

'Camp' is a common Maine name for a 3 season building and location, usually a seasonal second home of sorts, for many Maine residents. It has been very common in past generations to have a 'Camp' on a pond somewhere in the State, often nearby their main residence, to spend family time whenever possible. Unfortunately, the cost of waterfront property, taxation, etc has made this practice largely a thing of the past for many Maine families.

This property was original purchased by Lysle and Ruth Wilbur in the late 1960s. In the early 1970s, Lysle, Ruth, and Rob hand carried all the lumber and supplies necessary to build a small 'Camp' on the property prior to the road being built. That meant carrying every board and cement block nearly a mile through the woods!! They built the 'Camp' themselves and started building memories. Whenever anyone asked or they told anyone where they'd be this weekend, this summer, etc.. the answer was always... "We'll be out to camp!" and everyone knew where that was.

Though "Out to Camp" is currently and certainly, much more than a 3 season building, rather a custom log home, this is the origin of the property name today.

The week of Lysle and Ruth's 25th wedding anniversary, they gave the property to us (Rob & Luana) as we were seeking a waterfront lot where we could build a home. And build one we did. It was a labor of love then, as it is today. Eventually we took down the original 'Camp' and recycled much of the building materials (part of the floor is in the "Kids Camp" building behind the garage out by the horseshoe pits), but the name and memories remain.

The family photo above, was taken out in the driveway during Lysle & Ruth's 50th wedding anniversary party, celebrated August 2016... we couldn't think of a better place to celebrate the event!

Perfect family getaway

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Out to Camp. As other reviewers noted, the photos - while accurate - don't really convey how nice this place is. The house has that "rustic" feel but is spacious and comfortable, with cathedral ceilings and views throughout. The house is at the end of a private road so it feels very secluded and is extremely quiet (well, except for the loons!). The neighbors we did meet were friendly, but most of the time it felt like we had the whole lake to ourselves! It's not clear from the description or photos, but the opposite side of the pond is (as of 2017) undeveloped, so when you look across from the house all you see is forest. That was one of the nicest surprises, since we've rented other places where the lake feels like one big party! There was very little motorboat traffic during our stay. Our dog had a blast running around the yard and swimming in the pond. We made good use of the kayaks as well as the pool table, and our son tried out the fishing gear (no luck this time). While Acadia is worth the drive (about an hour to most points, in summer traffic), for terrific views without the crowds I highly recommend Great Pond Mountain in Orland, just a few minutes down Rte. 1. Overall we had a fantastic time and wold not hesitate to return.

Incredible vacation spot

  • 5 of 5

Stayed with my family from July 29-August 5, 2017. The home was incredible. Plenty of room to house 8 adults. The setting was perfect. Located at the end of the road we had the lake pretty much to ourselves. The water was refreshing and clear, the fishing was great, and we had sun all afternoon. We have vacationed in several spots over the past 25 years, this spot is undoubtedly the best we have been to.

Looking forward to going back next year.

Gorgeous Home!

  • 5 of 5

WOW! This home is absolutely stunning.

After looking through the photos we were really looking forward to vacationing here. The house was even more than we expected! The wood, the craftsmanship, the attention to detail – just wonderful!

We had a party of 7 adults and our pets and it was more than large enough to accommodate everyone. The open arrangement in the main living space was perfect!

The exterior was just as lovely as the inside. There is a large level private yard- perfect for your outdoor games. The landscaping was beautiful, the pretty benches and hidden nooks are perfect for relaxing and watching nature.

We kayaked, canoed and swam in the crystal clear water daily. The swing down by the water was so peaceful and while I brought a book to read- I was too mesmerized watching the water - seeing the loons swim and the fish jump out of the water and watching a variety of birds flying by- that I never actually read! The photo opportunities were spectacular!

The family of loons was always present and we also saw deer and even an eagle as we boated around the lake.

The nightly sunsets were gorgeous and after sunset we sat around the large fire pit roasting marshmallows and making s’mores. Most nights we played board games inside until the early hours of the morning. Many in our group slept in – and I enjoyed sitting out on the deck with my pups and a cup of coffee early in the morning listening to the birds and seeing what surprises nature had in store for me that day.

Bar Harbor was only about a 40 minute drive away and we took a few day trips in to explore the area. Downtown Ellsworth and the grocery stores are a very short drive away- yet when you are back at the house you feel so far away from everything and you are surrounded by the sounds of nature.

We had such a wonderful time- thank you for sharing your home with us!

True to the description,only better!

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from our week at "Out to Camp". The house is beautifully maintained and true to the description on vrbo.

We were a group of 7 adults and 2 children. We had plenty of private space for all. My husband and I slept in the "daylight basement" with our twin 6 year old boys. There was plenty of space for us and all our stuff. The adjacent game room and walk out was perfect for the boys. The master bedroom and loft was used by my in-laws and sister in-law. There was plenty of space upstairs. All the rooms were spacious. The loft had a futon for sleeping, but proved to be too uncomfortable for sister in-law. The main floor bedroom, entry Hall, kitchen and dining was spacious and well equipped. The first floor bathroom was large enough for us to share.

The outside deck had brand new flooring and railings. With a nice breeze we were able to sit outside each evening and watch the boys swimming in the pond. We grilled most nights and the kitchen was equipped with everything we needed.

This was our first trip to Acadia. We were 30 minutes or so to the park at "Out to Camp". The road to and from was an easy drive past restaurants, shopping, etc. this made the location just fine, as we needed to get these services coming and going each day we ventured out.

This home is fantastic for a relaxing retreat in a beautiful, private setting.

Upper Patten Pond is heaven in itself. There are, however, shops, restaurants, mini golfing and lots more heading towards the Ellsworth, Bar Harbor region. Going inland towards Bucksport, Belfast and Searsport you have even more shops, restaurants, antiques, and the Penobscot Narrows Observatory. Stay at the house and enjoy the calmness, peacefulness, swimming, loons, ducks and eagles. The house is well equipped for everyone in the family, wireless internet and satellite TV, game room and stone fireplace in the great room for those cool Maine nights. If you prefer a fire outside, the fire pit is a great way to watch for shooting stars or get your fill with smores. Inside or out you will be right at home.
