Sunset Cove is an architect-designed home perched on the waterfront in the quiet Smuggler's Cove neighborhood on the northern end of Chincoteague Island. The downstairs living room has a stone fireplace and comfortable seating with views of the water and woodlands. There is one bedroom and bath downstairs and three bedrooms on the second floor, all with water views. The house has been our second home and is furnished with a blend of antiques and comfortable contemporary furniture, with local art and crafts decorations.
Visitors to Chincoteague Island love the location -- even in the busiest times of the summer season, it is quiet and peaceful. Watching the sunset from the deck is a favorite evening activity. There is also a screened porch with table and chairs, off the kitchen. Sunset Cove is a special retreat, perfect for a romantic get-away or family vacation. You will love the 'lookout' on the second floor, with window seats on three sides, overlooking the bay and quiet, wooded neighborhood.

Ken and I came to Chincoteague years ago and fell in love with the island. We found Smuggler's Cove and had architect Steven Gantner design a special second home for us. It is now is a favorite family vacation home that we share. We kayak in the Chincoteague Bay, catch blue crabs, bike and enjoy the beach. Spending even a few days here helps us relax and feel like we've had a long vacation. We hate to leave!
Sunset Cove is perfect in every season and on any kind of day. There are sunny decks, a shady screened porch, cozy windowseats and lots of room to spread out. The water views are great -- shorebirds, seagulls, and just watching the waves. Even on the occasional rainy day, you can curl up on a sofa, watch a movie or read a book. And the kitchen is designed for people who enjoy cooking with a group -- lots of counterspace!
1. Chincoteague Island, Virginia
This tranquil landfall off Virginia's coast is famed for the feral Chincoteague ponies that roam nearby Assateague Island. Every July since 1925, the Pony Penning and auction floods the town with tourists there to watch the ponies gallop down Main Street. This area is a nature-lover's nirvana all year round, though, with Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge and the Assateague Island National Seashore, home to herons, bald eagles, and woodpeckers. If the weather is keeping you from visiting the birds' natural habitat, the Refuge Waterfowl Museum exhibits extensive wildlife murals, skipjack boat models, and wildfowl woodcarvings by renowned decoy crafters like carver-in-residence Delbert "Cigar" Daisy. Victorian inns and ice cream parlors, clam shacks serving Chincoteague oysters, and beachfront BBQs complete the Norman Rockwell picture.
Tip: Watch rocket launches at the NASA Visitor Center at the Wallops Flight Facility where Science on a Sphere Theatre projects 3-D effects on a suspended six-foot-diameter globe, depicting the moon, Jupiter storms, and Earth as seen by astronauts.
I can’t thank you enough for renting your vacation home to us for the dates we needed it! When we came in the door, our mouths were hanging open with awe! Beautiful inside and out! All the kitchen essentials were there for us, and we all took turns making a great meal.
Everyone who stayed there (cousins, brother) loved the place. We even had the others in the family who were down for the wedding over for dinner and lawn games a couple of times. They loved the place as well. The decks are huge and comfortably laid out. Coffee was taken out there many mornings!
The sunsets at the point were the highlight of the day (evening) and we congregated there to take pictures most nights. I am attaching a picture of the last evening my husband and I were there (Tuesday), as everyone else had left for home before that.
I loved hearing the birds singing in the morning—actually all day! And the different wildlife in the inlet was amazing—I think I saw something different every day. And of course, I took lots of pictures! Birds, turtles, fish—geese with babies, you name it. Guess I don’t have to tell you how special your place is.
We loved the Creamery for ice cream, Gary Howard Seafood for a great take out meal for 14, The Jackspot for great beer and lunch, AJ's on the Creek for tasty seafood and ambiance. We visited Assateague Island for the beach several times, once for a sunrise. The mini-golf courses are challenging and fun! There is no shortage of things to see and do there!
We all talked about coming back to the island, and being at your house again. Of course, I don’t think my husband and I will always get the master bedroom with a door to the back porch!! Everyone has to have a turn with that!
Thank you so much!
Our 3-generation family of 8 had a wonderful week together in this lovely home! We were comfortable and the home provided all of the amenties we could wish for. It really felt like home with art, books, games, and personal touches, not a sterile rental property. We really enjoyed the wildlife -- so many birds, as well as an adorable toad under the house and the incredible privilege of witnessing two female diamondback terrapins laying their eggs in nests just behind the house (we were able to watch through the window so as not to disturb them at their important work). The kids loved the beach on Assateague, the shops in town, and fun activities like mini golf. Our favorite restaurant food came from Island Creamery, Sea Star carryout, and Ray's Shanty on the mainland. My husband and I rode our bikes nearly every day -- the beautiful scenery and flat terrain made it a real pleasure. Thank you for an absolutely wonderful week!
I'm apprehensive about writing glowing review of this property because I'm afraid that other people will see it and book this house and I'll never be able to get back in again! The house was simply fantastic. Comfortable, beautiful, well stocked. The views are magnificent. Two porches to choose from. Water views. Paddle from the house. Ride to the beach. I think this was the nicest place I have ever rented. This was a kid vacation and the house worked really well - they took over the turret / roost and wouldn't let any adults in! Plus they had lots of space to play outside. Thanks. Really great place.
My fiancé and daughter and I spent a week at this gorgeous property. We were planning a beachfront wedding that weekend with close family. Upon seeing the breathtaking natural dock at the end of the property we contacted the owner- and changed the ceremony to the property! Our guests were marveled at the natural beauty of this spot- after seeing pictures- 2 friends have booked vacations at Chincoteague! This house was truly amazing- We often found ourselves not wanting to leave the back deck!!!! We cannot wait to return to Sunset Cove- and plan to many many times!!!!!!!
This is an amazing house on a breathtaking piece of property! The sunsets were incredible. The kayaking around the property was awesome. We paddled straight from the house... seeing eagles, salt marshes, the bay and sunsets...one week of heaven! The view from every room is beautiful and the upstairs "roost" was so much fun to watch the beautiful surroundings. Everyone had a week to remember and brought back fantastic photographs! We'll be back for sure!!!
Chincoteague is known for its fishing and oysters, in addition to being the access point for the National Wildlife Refuge on Assateague Island, home to the wild ponies made famous in 'Misty of Chincoteague.' More recently, Wallops Island just south of Chincoteague has become an active launch site for space vehicles, including the spectacular launch of LADEE on September 7, 2013.
