BOWMAN'S BEACH HOUSE is an architecturally significant holiday home designed by the world renowned architectural firm Duany Plater-Zyberk. The community of Seaside, on Florida's panhandle, is one of DPZ's most acclaimed projects.
The house is elevated twelve feet above grade! Its most dominant feature is a two storey high wraparound screen porch to temper the summer sun. It also features a dramatic Great Room with fireplace, a towering exposed wood cathedral ceiling and, to guarantee a cooling breeze, six pairs of French doors opening onto the porch on three sides.
There are three bedrooms, two and a half bathrooms and a sitting room that overlooks the Great Room, like a choir loft!
Please note: 28 day minimum rentals for houses on Sanibel

We live in Ottawa, Canada.
BOWMAN'S BEACH HOUSE is the perfect winter getaway for myself (an Architect), my wife (a Sports Medicine MD) and our two school age kids. Sadly we can't get away as much as we would like.
We hope you enjoy BOWMAN'S BEACH HOUSE as much as we do!
Robin Hamilton Fyfe purchased this house in 2008
Sanibel Island is unique!
Most of the island is conservation land and wildlife refuge. There is no highrise or high density development permitted. The commercial development is low-key and pedestrian scaled. We like to ride the bikes to Captiva Island and the Sanibel Recreation Centre - both are about one mile away.
And the beach is fantastic!
BOWMANS BEACH HOUSE is located in Sanibel Bayous and is the closest house to Bowman’s Beach, one of the most spectacular beaches in southwest Florida. Our beach path passes through conservation land and palm forests, over a salt water pond on a plank footbridge, and past protected sand dunes with nesting wildlife. To the east this extraordinary beach stretches for ten miles! To the west there is no development for as far as the eye can see – just sand, surf, sea and sky!
Even if you're not an architecture buff, this is an elegant way to get to know the basics of 19th-century "Cracker" design elements. Otherwise, the setting is privately-tropical, complete with an outdoor shower and the expansive view over the Live Oak and Palmetto Palm tops toward the Gulf is in itself a respite. Plenty of movie and/or literature diversions if so inclined. Gene's Books for those who want to shop. The Mad Hatter , Sunset Grill for consistently-excellent dining as is true of the newest island addition, Bleu Rendez Vous. Elevated above the fray, the BBH is open to the sun, moon and breeze, yet cocooned in a 2-story screened-in porch, away from the island's abundant flying/crawling arthropods. The sugar-sand beach and gentle Gulf tides are wonderful for the little ones and shelling draws "professionals" from around the globe. The BBH is replete with bicycles, chairs, umbrellas, beach towels, a cooler, etc. for a long day at the beach. Inside, the BBH is equipped with what you will require for cooking, dining and imbibing in your favorite wines and/or island cocktails. Publix just before the causeway bridge, Jerry's just after the bridge and Bailey's when in town will keep you well-supplied. Worried about losing your svelte figure and muscle tone? The Sanibel Rec. Center will keep you going with daily/weekly/family rates. "Ding Darling" Wildlife Refuge is a "must" and if time allows for a quick trip to Key West, look into Key West Express for cruising and Silver Airways for flights. For a relaxing resort-like experience around the pool with bar/dining options complete with optional kayak tours and/or solo excursions, it's the "Tween-Waters" Inn/Resort where you can purchase a day-pass. The Bubble Room is the place for an eclectic dining experience or get some of their award-winning Red Velvet cake to go. For off-island upscale shopping and dining, get to Naples-downtown and try "Tommy Bahama's" for both and/or the nearby "Osteria Tulia" or its cozy next door sibling, the "Bar Tulia". Finally....forget about all of it, simply exhale and stay-put at the BBH, you won't regret a moment. We're coming back.
Met up with some long lost friends at Bowmans Beach House for a "girl's reunion". What a wonderful property....very private, and quiet.....well maybe not with all the talking we did.....but we did not hear any of the neighbours. Loved our morning coffee time on the screened porch. Beautiful natural garden surrounding a very comfortable home. The beach is a 5 minute very pleasant walk away and we saw lots of nature along the path - gopher tortoise, manatee and some wonderful birds. The beach has very nice sand and seashells....you can walk for miles. The ocean temperature was very comfortable...great for swimming. On my last morning beach walk I saw some dolphins swim by. We did quite a bit of biking around the island...it is such a good way to get around. The biking is easy as there are no hills and the island has a very well maintained path system. Also great for running/walking on for those who want to do that. We ate most of our meals onsite and the kitchen had everything we needed to make some very delicious meals. We did test out some of the local cuisine at some nearby restaurants and thoroughly enjoyed those as well. Drove off the island a couple of times and got some great deals at the malls that are easy to get to if you have a car. We didn't have any problems that we had to contact the owner about but I'm sure if you had any questions you needed answering you would get a very quick response. Robin answered all my emails promptly when I was arranging to rent. Can't say enough about what a great place it is to stay at. We're hoping to meet there again.....can't think of anything that could have made our time there any better!
We just returned from a great week at Bowman's Beach House. Such a lovely, unique home, totally surrounded by screened in decking. I felt like we were looking at the rain forest as we enjoyed the outdoor living area. Just a short walk to beautiful Bowman's Beach - we watched a family of manatees as we crossed the bridge over the bayou! The house has everything you need. We cooked in several nights and had everything necessary for preparing meals. Loved the private outdoor shower! Can't wait to return. Thanks to the owners for making us feel so welcome.
This was a terrific stay! We had a happy welcome by a bottle of red wine on the table. House neat and fit! The house surrounded by a "jungle", birds singing all day long and at night you hear the wildlife in the undergrowth. You feel perfectly close to nature. Three houses near by, two of them barely to see as covered by trees and bushes giving enough privacy. The house easily fits 6 persons as beside the 3 bedrooms a quite spacey living room is provided, and the lanai is even a part of the living space after opening all the doors (5 double wing doors and 3 single doors). The fully mosquito tight fenced lanai allows to have all doors open all time, letting a breeze from the near by ocean air thoroughly the living room allowing to switch off the air condition most of time. Kitchen is fully equipped; we missed nothing. The interior is pleasantly sober and furnished in good taste.
From the inside of the house you would never expect the age of ~25 years. Only the outside wooden stairs might need a re-modelling in future as this is the only part of the house that is exposed to weather (beside the roof). The lanai, going around the complete house, is fully protected by the roof and allows you sitting outside even at rainy days. Beach is nearby and takes 10 minutes leisurely walk. Three bicycles are also provided. All beach stuff you need is available in the shed (chairs, umbrella, ...). You might want to bring a Frisbee as we accidentally took the one we have found in the shed. It ended up in the language of our daughter. Sorry for that....
By the way: kids - there are stairs to the upper level but carpeted with baste. It might not the best house to stay with kids younger than 2 years of age, but for all other it is just perfect. Our daughter is 4 and she loved it. Also the collection of games for the rainy days and the ability to wander around the house without leaving it, as it is surrounded by the lanai.
Robin was very helpful by reacting fast on emails – at booking and also during our stay.
Apropos email: house provides fast internet access and full wireless coverage in all rooms!
The description given on the website fits perfectly. We expected some more beach view but have been positively surprised by the nature around. You can see the beach from the upper balcony – binoculars are provided.
All in all – we would have loved to stay longer and we are definitely considering coming back next season!!! We can recommend the place without limitation!
Renting BBH was the best experience we could imagine. The owners were prompt and attentive to all inquires from beginning to end. Their home was as described and was comfortable and well equipped. There is nothing that can actually describe the wrap around screen porch. It was by far our favorite place to sit. We joined the Sanibel Rec Center and went there everyday for the gym and pool. I wish we had the same amenities where we live. If we weren't at the beach, we were at the gym, riding bikes to Captiva, playing golf at The Dunes, bird watching at Ding Darling or Tarpon Bay, or eating our way through the island's many restaurants. The stores on the island are adequate for food supplies. We cooked in much of the time as the kitchen is well equipped and easy to maneuver. I think we left the island only a handful of times in two months. We played golf in Fort Myers at the Colonial and visited with friends in Naples for dinner.
We are signed on again for next year and are so looking forward to it.
Thanks to Robin for sharing BBH with us.
Had a fine time at Bowmans Beach House (BBH)...enjoyed a totally relaxing stay. I'm a beach walker (not a beach sitter) and so Bowmans Beach was ideal for me. Bowmans Beach is clearly Sanibel's best beach; it's a big plus to be able to walk to it from the house. I'd walk the beach all the way up to Captiva and sometimes continue on to the far end of Captiva. Loved the bird life and looking at the amazing variety of shells. The house is truly unique and it's delightful....loved its airiness...we would open doors and windows and feel that we were outside all the time. Enjoyed the sitting porch—a great way to be outdoors but out of the direct sun.
Ours is the closest house to Bowman's Beach, a spectacular shelling beach with no development for a far as you can see! Amazing wildlife! Extraordinary sunrises and sunsets!
