Keokea Beach Sweet Retreat

Bedrooms 3
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

Cottage, 3 Bedrooms + Other (See Description), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

This magical 2 bedroom cottage + additional detached 1 room/1 B cedar hale, is on the road to Keokea Beach Park in North Kohala. This is a peaceful retreat in a special old Hawaii neighborhood. Surrounded by lush tropical vegetation and perched above a gulch with seasonal stream, the cedar home features luxurious woods throughout the interior. Cabinets of African mahogany, koa, maple and red gum eucalyptus make the kitchen an artistic delight. Eight different woods pattern the floors. Cathedral ceilings give plenty of light and a feeling of spaciousness.

The large surrounding deck invites you to live outside, enjoying views of Maui and a peek of the ocean below. The landscape gives a sense of seclusion, yet only a short drive from the charming towns of Kapaau and Hawi. Keokea Beach Park is walking distance from the cottage. Local families enjoy picnics and watching for whales in season there! Or drive /run 2 miles to Polulu Valley and hike down to the black sand beach. Rich soil, just enough rain, and wind-protected gulches made this area the breadbasket of the ancient Hawaiians. They say that the property was home to King Kamehameha's private Taro patch!

The master bedroom has a king bed; the 2nd bedroom has a double bed. The bathroom is between the two bedrooms. The cedar hale is a seperate building next door and perfect for large families that need space! Soak in the beautiful soaking tub for the perfect relaxing and romantic experience. Outdoor shower near laundry. Wake up and pick your breakfast right off the tree! papaya, mango, bananas, mac nuts, lemons, Tahitian limes, collard greens grow right on the property. Enjoy quiet nights and the Milky way with local hiking and fantastic beaches a walk away!

Gorgeous house

This was a fantastic house. So beautiful and well stocked. We loved our retreat here. Was so helpful to have baby stuff available (crib, toys for sand, high chair) , and loved the futon for naps on the lanai.

The Sweetest Retreat!

  • 5 of 5

My stay at Susan's was absolutely incredible! At the home you are completely surrounded but the tropical jungle; it really could not be more peaceful. While I was staying there the avocado tree was producing the most delicious avocados, too! Her house is a very special place and I will definitely be back again. A true dream!

Owner's Response: Aloha, Thank you for this info, I wish you would have told me via a phone call so I could remedy. I take pride in attending to my guests that stay at the sweet retreat. Maybe coming from Ohio you do not understand the tropics and that critters are seasonal.

Nice place and great location but needs some updates.

  • 3 of 5

Very nice location away from the congestion of Kona and Hilo and very quiet. You definitely need to rent a car if you want to see the sights on the big island. We didn't mind driving--went 1100 miles in eight days. The house has a nice layout and a big lanai but could benefit from some upkeep. I didn't like the geckos on the kitchen counters and in the shower. I realize it's the tropics but this might be fixed with a new screen door and by fixing a couple of window screens. Our biggest problem was the welcome manual which was not up to date. The wifi passwords in it would not work and there was no phone number to call. So had to email the owner on the mainland to get a correct password. Never could get the TV to work either but decided that eight days without TV was a good idea. I think every rental should have a local contact with a phone number in case of a problem--what do you do if a pipe breaks? Bottom line is we had a great visit and enjoyed the house but hope these suggestions are helpful.

Owner's Response: Aloha, Thanks for your review and feedback. I'm sorry you didn't get the check in details! VRBO's system sends all check in details including contact phone numbers and wifi passwords are sent ahead of time before your arrival. I also would have sent those to you had you contacted me and there ida folder in the house with them as well. Geckos are indeed part of the tropics, but will look at the screens to make sure we fix any wear and tear. Thanks for staying! Aloha, Susan

Was looking for a place to get away from it all and this is the place to do that. The Sweet Retreat is everything that it promised. I love to cook and the kitchen has everything you need to do that. The walk to Keokeo Beach is under a mile and Pololu Valley is right around the corner. I stayed for 6 days and repeatedly took naps on the lanai. While the house doesn't really have the views (you can see Maui on really clear days) it is relaxing. Don't count on great cell service but that is why I went there! The nearby town of Hawi is really cool but you are about 30 mins from a real beach.

Enjoyed our stay!

  • 4 of 5

Comfortable and cozy, a lovely setting in the "jungle" with lots of beautiful birds to watch. Close to wonderful hikes, beaches, and day trips to Hawi/Kapa'au, Waimea, Kona, and all points in between. Susan was easy to work with, which made it all just perfect!
