This magical 2/3 bedroom cottage, on the road to Keokea Beach Park in North Kohala, is a peaceful retreat in a special old Hawaii neighborhood. Surrounded by lush tropical vegetation and perched above a gulch with seasonal stream, the cedar home features luxurious woods throughout the interior. Cabinets of African mahogany, koa, maple and red gum eucalyptus make the kitchen an artistic delight. Eight different woods pattern the floors. Cathedral ceilings give plenty of light and a feeling of spaciousness.
The large surrounding deck invites you to live outside, enjoying views of Maui and a peek of the ocean below. The landscape gives a sense of seclusion, yet only a short drive from the charming towns of Kapaau and Hawi. Keokea Beach Park is walking distance from the cottage. Local families enjoy picnics and watching for whales in season there! Or drive /run 2 miles to Polulu Valley and hike down to the black sand beach. Rich soil, just enough rain, and wind-protected gulches made this area the breadbasket of the ancient Hawaiians. They say that the property was home to King Kamehameha's private Taro patch!
The master bedroom has a king bed; the 2nd bedroom has a double bed. The bathroom is between the two bedrooms. Outdoor shower near laundry. Wake up and pick your breakfast right off the tree! papaya, mango, bananas, mac nuts, lemons, Tahitian limes, collard greens grow right on the property. Enjoy quiet nights and the Milky way with local hiking and fantastic beaches a walk away!

I am a single mom who has raised her kids in this magical setting. We have learned about the rich history of the land and how to grow food and appreciate the simple pleasures of the good life!
The Owner purchased this cottage in 2005
This is a very special place in an old Hawaii setting rich with history and culture and cool folks!
I enjoy gardening, nature, quiet nights and the Milky Way with local hiking and great snorkeling, diving and beaches.
Really enjoyed our stay at Sweet Retreat !
Quiet peacfull and relaxing place. Enjoyed the jungle atmosphere and really appreciated the nature of the place. Lots of birds at the feeder . Like that. Also liked the outdoor shower.
Definitely be back !!!!
The Keokea Beach Sweet Retreat is just that- a sweet retreat from reality. Set in the midst of a lush, green jungle, I was completely content. Pololu is just a mile or so up the road and quite possibly the most spectacular view I have ever seen. I spent the majority of my time relaxing at the house--at night you can see SO many stars. Not a typical sight for someone from LA. The house is so homey and warm, my favorite morning was when I woke up to the sound of rain. The white sandy beaches were not too far and I loved coming back to a spot that wasn't so touristy and noisy. It felt like the genuine Hawaii experience I was always wanting. Couldn't recommend this sweet spot more.
I just love the Keokea Beach Sweet Retreat! The solitude, the starry nights and greenery all around you lend to a very magical stay. Lots of birds to watch and listen to off the deck looking out to views of Maui and the ocean where we spent much of our time relaxing. A short walk to the lovely Keokea beach that was a perfect spot for our little boy to enjoy the ocean. 2 miles down the road is one of the most breath taking spots on earth- Pololu Valley! Not to be missed!!! An access trail makes for a fun walk down to a beautiful black sand beach that is magnificent to behold and explore once you get down there....you won't want to leave. The hike up is steep, but do-able for sure. You won't want to go fast anyhow...take your time and take it all in. This valley is beautiful beyond words. The house was very comfortable. Feels rustic and homey with everything we needed and more. Susan even had a high chair and baby crib on hand which helped us to lighten our load when packing. Overall, it was a very sweet and special spot indeed that no one wanted to leave. The quiet this place offered to city dwellers was like a healing balm for our souls. Just writing this is bringing me a little peace of mind as I reflect on our wonderful stay. Hope to be back again at some point.
Our family of six stayed at this lovely retreat for a week this Christmas and we would visit again if possible. It is such a lovely place. We really loved the quiet, green and spacious feeling of the house and the surroundings. The house is beautifully decorated, has comfortable beds, a nice bathroom, a spacious living room and a well equipped kitchen. The garden is gorgeous and the wiew from the large lanai gives you the perfect jungel feeling. We spent most of our time outside. Exploring the Island on day trips or sitting on the large lanai overlooking the beautiful garden, looking at exotic birds, eating all our meals and watching stars at night.
It was great being in a secluded, quiet area and be able to fall asleep to the sounds outside with the windows open. The house has vents, and kept a nice temperature all day and night.
We loved the Northern part of the island for its local markets, chill atmosphere and less touristy feeling. There are great places to visit near by: Hawi and Kapaau are nice little towns with shops and a grocery store, as well as lovely restaurants with great food, farmers market gives you the possibility to get some local, great fruits and veggies etc. The Black sand beach in the Pololu Valley is just a short drive or hike away. There are several great beaches in the area within 20-30 min drive, as well as scenic views on the ocean and the wild, green nature. Both Kona and Hilo is close enough for a day trip. We even went to the Mouna Kea visitor senter to see the sunset and the stars by telescope at night.
Thank you for letting us stay - Mahalo! We hope to come back one day!
The host responded fast on our questions prior to our stay, she even got us a crib and high chair for the baby and was warm, welcoming and made us feel at home! She gave good and exact information and there is a book at the house with recommendations and tips on where to go, what to do og where to eat during your stay.
Come here to be refreshed. It so tranquil, peaceful and charming.
We are so grateful for the experience of this wonderful place. We did not want to leave at the end of the week and now we are longing to go back.
We highly recommend this sweet retreat
Thank you for providing such a wonderful respite from our normal busy life. You could never find a better name for this wonderful place than the "Sweet Retreat." The pictures and description on the web-site don't do it justice. Immediately upon arrival, I felt relaxed by it's quite place in the lush countryside. While the interior is everything the photos depict, and more. I can't say we spent much time inside as we tended to be on the wonderful lanai (you should update the photo, as it is much nicer now with the new table and chairs).
I very highly recommend the Sweet Retreat for anyone wanting to really get away and relax. While the property is relaxing, the nearby towns of Kapa'au and Hawi are similarly relaxing and still feel unspoiled by tourists. Fish tacos at Gill's, coffee and ice cream at the Kohala Coffee Mill, and happy hour and dinner at Bamboo will probably not be one-time stops.
The "Sweet Retreat" is now at the top of our list for Big Island get-aways!
We LOVED the sweet retreat and were sorry to leave. We LOVED Kiki, she stole our hearts! We arrived in a storm and when we pulled in and she met us at the car, we knew we were at the right place. Everything was perfect; we had a great visit and look forward to coming back. After touring the Island, there is nowhere else we'd rather be, both in location and abode. North Kohala, with its access to great beaches, Hawi and Kapa’au, and great dining (Sushi Rock, Bamboo), is the best! Your pictures on VRBO really do not capture how fabulous the sweet retreat is. The wonderful lanai overlooking the lush jungle, the privacy, the array of fruit on the property – all amazing! Mahalo for the wonderful, serene place you've created.
Zip-Line Adventure is only Minutes Away and there are many beautiful hikes that start from the property. Pololu Valley is 2 miles away with stunning hikes to black sand beaches. Keokea beach is a lovely family fun beach.
