Puako - Well Appointed, Kid-Friendly Island-Style Corner Condo

Bedrooms 3
Space 1,000 sq. ft.
Property type condo
Minimum Stay 5 - 14 nights

About the property

Condo, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

Hawaiian-Style, Well Appointed Beach Condo. 2nd Floor Corner Unit for refreshing cross breeze and more light. Well equipped and remodeled kitchen with all appliances, great pots and pans, sharp knives and small appliances - everything a cook would desire. Boogie boards, Snorkel Gear, Small Coolers, Beach Chairs, Towels and Umbrellas make a day at nearby Hapuna or Beach 69 easy.

We Love Puako!!! We have tried to make it so this condo will enable you to have a great and easy stay here. It was chosen and remodeled with ease in mind, with a flat screen TV, Roku, Netflix and Blu-ray player, great Broadband and WiFi, and beds that are firm, designed for people who have not been gentle to their backs. We recently added a second TV w/Roku box & Netflix in the master suite.

The waters around Puako are great - they are very clean, and three of the islands' largest and nicest white sand beaches (Waikoloa, Hapuna & Mauna Kea) are in adjacent coves within two miles of the condo. For those times in between visits to the beach, the condo has a nice, gated pair of pools. One is small and shallow, ideal for kids under 3. The other is larger but by no means a lap pool.

Puako is a relaxed, beachfront community, and this unit is ideally located to make your life easy and relaxed. We are next door to the quaint and funky Puako General Store - a reasonably priced and incredibly convenient place with supplies for everything from breakfast to dinner to cocktail fixings and Hawaiiana. If you stay for a few weeks, you may want to do one stock-up trip into Kona (30 minute away with Costco, Safeway, etc...) or Waimea (western style town, home of the Parker Ranch, about 15-20 minutes away, and with a gigantic western style wooden play structure to make the trip fun) and you can spend the rest of the trip being mellow on the beach.

We have a map of all the best locations for activities ranging from a hand-built sheltered rock tide-pool to explore, to romantic beaches on which to watch a sunset. Toss the cooler in the car, and enjoy a different sunset beach within a 5 minute drive each night. 3 large world class beaches and one that we love are all really near by. Pick the beach that has the combination of sand, surf & snorkeling that suits your fancy on each day. During the winter Hapuna has great body surfing - with regular nice sized waves every day. Wailea Bay has lots of trees right next to the ocean - it is a great beach to enjoy some shade but with your toes in the sand. It is hard to go wrong! There are also lots of smaller beaches directly off of Puako road, accessible through pretty well marked signs, with walks to the beach typically being less that 50 feet. The nearest access is a great one - it is just a block away (and fine to walk), with a sheltered lava-rock pool for the kids, and decent entry for a nice, early morning scuba dive.

If you want to go out for meals, both modest and fancy restaurants are within a 10-15 minute drive, ranging from the resorts of Mauna Kea, Mauna Lani and the Hapuna Prince to the nearby town of Kawaihae, home of excellent shave ice and complete with an open-daily Farmer's Market - our best source for papaya, vegetables and sweet cane rice sticks. Slightly upcountry is Hawi, a lovely artist community with the best ice cream on the island. We have a list of restaurants we have personally tried, plus a list of other places that have been well recommended.

If you want to stay home, you can sit on the Lanai and enjoy the ocean breeze, and use the renovated kitchen (designed by me - someone who really likes to cook).

On the technical side, we are a registered Hawaii business, and our business number is W12347509-01. Our on-island caretaker/agent is Tiffany Wainwright 808 430-6190 , though we prefer all initial communications to come through us. She will take great care of you once your on property though! Please note that our rates vary by the number of guests.

We welcome you to Hale Hanu (Turtle House) in our delightful little community here in Puako.

All the best, Kimberley and Alan

About Kimberley Lippman

The owners live in Washington State, and enjoy the wonderful contrast of living in the Pacific Northwest coupled with having access to warmth and waves whenever we get away. We're both in technology - hence the high speed internet. We've got an eight year old who grew up going to Hale Hanu and wants to return as often as she can (as do we...). We very much enjoy sharing our home with friends and family.

Why Kimberley Lippman chose Kohala Coast

We love it here - plain and simple. The people are lovely, the environment is quiet and unpretentious, and with the Puako General Store right next door you are never completely out of luck when cooking a meal and needing a surprise ingredient. The beaches are the best - and having a nearby option with lots of shade is great when you've got little kids. Nothing happens here. We like that a lot.

What makes this condo unique

The quiet, the birds, the wild turkeys, quail and finches that abound, the fresh fruit from the garden, amazing beaches right across the street, tide pooling, turtles and a gentle breeze to keep things cool. Puako is a great location from which to get just about anywhere on the island - either upcountry or around the horn to Hilo. South is easy too.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Pauko. It's in a great area, very quiet. There's a general store next door with everything you would need. The condo was well equip with all the gear we needed- beach items, towels, condiments, etc. We had a wonderful stay!

Owner's Response: We are so happy when our guests are happy! This was the first time that we had had a request to turn the twin beds into a King - so glad that it worked!

As Described

  • 4 of 5

We had a great vacation on the Big Island with Hale Honu as our home base. This is not a luxury waterfront estate and that suited us just fine. We were looking for a location that was affordable enough for our whole family to go and this was one of the few three bedroom options that fit the bill. As a plus, it was clean, well equipped and had generous lanai space. The BBQ was used every night - I would suggest a bit better lighting on the deck off the kitchen if possible.

We checked out the beaches across the road and they were okay. We really enjoyed Beach 69, which is just a little north. The General Store was super handy to grab the items we forgot when we did our 'big shop' - and their fresh bagels were great in the morning.

Overall a great vacation and I would recommend this rental for a family.

November stay

  • 3 of 5

We had a great time in this Puako condo. Kitchen had everything we needed to cook for our family, including a bbq. Lots of snorkeling gear and boogie boards to borrow along with coolers. I do think someone should go through them though, some are just not usable, maybe just get rid of broken ones.

I also think some things should be updated , curtains, and carpet in main bedroom had stains on them along with the mattress pad cover. One of the twin beds was lopsided.

Also I wish we would have know the pool was not heated.

The grounds of this condo were amazing. They take really good care in keeping it looking great! Loved all the fresh fruit.

Owner's Response: We just had our family holiday at Hale Honu and did a full refresh on the condo! Brand new Twin Sealy Posturpedic mattresses and box springs, new linens throughout, new 48" TV w/ Roku & Netflix in the master, new infrared electric grill on the lanai and a LOT of deep cleaning and freshening. It was a busy year at Hale Honu and now the condo is all ready for 2017!

Great home base for a family vacation

  • 4 of 5

This is a pleasant, functional, clean condo that is well equipped with everything needed for a family home base. It's not luxurious, and it's not big, but it's very pleasant with three bedrooms and a balcony so that there is plenty of room for everyone to have some time alone to read or relax with a drink if desired. We traveled with two adults and two teens, but it would have worked fine for the whole family with three kids when they were younger.

The kitchen had everything necessary to cook and keep meals for several days, which is key for cost effective family travel. There's also the cool General Store right next door so you don't have to make more than one supermarket trip to stock up at the beginning of the trip.

The location is great. Very close to Hapuna for body surfing and beach time, and Beach 69 for simple snorkeling. And there's a small calm beach right across the road perfect for smaller kids.

Close to Kawaihae for amazing shaved ice and also Da Fish House, for fresh fish and poke. Get there early. We grilled mahi mahi as well as burgers on the BBQ, which is electric and small but worked fine.

Also located close to the roads towards Hilo and the volcano, which was convenient since the drive is kind of long, and to Waimea and Hawi in north Kohala for zipline that was seriously fun. And there are some nice hotels very close for a cocktail and lunch by the pool if that's your thing. We did that once and it was great. And there was good some shopping for clothes and beach gear.

We found a lot of really awesome snorkeling close by in Puako and just south by one of the hotels. It's pretty rocky along the coast, so it's not a bad idea to get some local help at least the first time, to find the best spots and then go back to them on your own later. There was a lot of snorkel gear at the condo in the closet, so we didn't have to rent much at all. And there's a lot of beach gear for smaller kids and some beach chairs etc. That was really helpful

The condo was really easy to find coming north from the airport and there's a parking space. All the directions were easy to follow. Had one question for Kimberley who answered it straight away. And there's someone onsite to help if needed. We'd love to stay again in the future and would recommend this for family. We thought it was a good deal. Enjoy.

Well stocked for our trip. Wish we had known more.

  • 4 of 5

I was born and raised on the Big Island and this location is perfect for getting around the island, close to many of my favorite beaches, and full of supplies for adventures in Hawaii. I really wish we knew a little more about what the place had available so we could have packed a little better. There is a washer and dryer on the premises, so we could have packed fewer clothes. There is tons of snorkel gear, 3 boogie boards, and assorted games throughout. These are all great things for the place to have, I just wish they were better advertised.

Biggest complaint is the lack of air conditioning. Not much of a problem at night or in the morning, but a little brutal during the day.

Owner's Response: We try and be clear that we keep this condo really well stocked on purpose - mostly because we don't want to pack extra stuff when we go to Hawaii either! And the full-size washer/dryer is a key selling point - little did we know it would be such a hit, but it is just as important to our guests as it is to our caretaker. And air conditioning - well, it is really expensive and we keep a box fan in the condo in case people want some extra air flow above and beyond the ceiling fans. We like the cross-breezes we get in the corner unit and keep the screened doors open most of the time, as well as the jalousie in the main door in the back of the condo. We also find it is important to close the south-facing drapes in the morning on the lanai with the BBQ to block out those hot rays that creep in in the afternoon. If you forget to do this and it's a sunny day - things will definitely get warmer than you might like. Best to bring out the box fan at that point till things cool down!

Fantastic Shore Diving & Body Surfing, Yet with beaches and pools gentle enough for toddlers! Nearby beach regularly voted #1 on the Big Island. Puako reef is one of the nicest in the islands, and this unit is within 200 yards of a good shore entry for scuba divers, and within 1 mile of one of the best shore dive locations on the Islands. Tank rental/refills, Gear Rental and Boat Dives available in nearby Kawaihae (10 minutes away). Fantastic Body Surfing at Hapuna Beach (mostly during the winter months), but still gentle enough for the little ones. Great Beaches within minutes for all ages. Our daughter loved these beaches from the time she could walk!
