Rustic Getaway

  • 5 of 5

We loved this place. It sits above an old store in Soda Springs while also being across the street from a functioning general store. The home is clean, well-stocked and the beds are comfortable. The location was great for us with many hiking trail heads close by. The landlord was easy to reach and plenty friendly. The only drawback to this cute apartment is the noise of the trains and the road but we slept with the windows open so it was not too bad. Overall, we enjoyed this cute spot. We hope to return next year!

A good place to stay

  • 4 of 5

Cabin at Soda Springs was exactly what we were looking for in a pinch. I found the price to be high for- but it seemed standard for the area. A little hot in the summer, but would be great to be there in the winter with the fire place.

We enjoyed our time at Jim's place. The cottage was comfortable and clean with a fully functioning kitchen, which was great! The location couldn't be better as it's a short drive from Sugarbowl. Only con (and this is simply for light sleepers or those with babies/toddlers) is that the cottage isn't far from train tracks and so there is some noise if one is sensitive to that sort of thing). Otherwise, a terrific place to enjoy the mountains!

cabin was perfect for our snow vacation

  • 4 of 5

The cabin was perfect for our snow vacation. It was easy to get to from hwy 80, less than a mile from the Soda Springs Resort turn off, and being across the street from the market was very convenient. The bedrooms were very comfortable, spacious and clean - very comfortable beds! Well stocked with kids games, bathroom toiletries, towels, etc. There is central heating as well as the fireplace, which kept things cozy. Jim was very responsive via vmail and text -- we had some issues with hot water, but that was likely due to the freezing temps and frozen pipes; also had some issues with the spotty wifi and problems with the coffee maker, but nothing we couldn't work through and certainly not deal breakers. We stayed with 3 adults and 3 kids age 5 and under and it was terrific. The close proximity to Soda Springs Resort allowed us to bring our baby back for a nap with grandma and return back to the resort all in under 20 min! The easy on/off from hwy 80 also made it super convenient to go north to the snopark at the Boreal/Castlepeak exit, where you can sled and snowshoe. I would definitely recommend this cabin if you're heading up with kids and are looking for a comfortable, easy place. The photos don't do it justice - the living room furniture has been updated, as has the fireplace. The outside isn't much to look at, so I was certainly (happily) surprised when we walked inside - bigger than expected for sure. We'll be back again!

Fun family trip to Soda Springs

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time in this cabin! There were 6 of us in total, and we stayed 3 nights. There were many exciting things about the cabin and location: The cabin was very well insulated, and it stayed very warm - very deceptive when walking outside in the 26F temperature. Care was taken to supply lots of firewood, toiletries, and to make the full cabin available to guests - this made us feel very welcomed. The cabin was strategically close to a cute market across the street, and to family-friendly resorts like Soda Springs Resort and Sugar Bowl, in addition to the freeway for easy access to larger towns like Truckee.

If I had to make any recommendations, I would let folks know on the property details page of the HomeAway website to bring kindling - the wood stove was comfy, and we wanted to make sure we used it every night and would have brought more up had we known. Also, we BBQ'd one night and realized there were no BBQ tools to use, so we improvised with a metal slotted spoon and salad tongs - having a pair of metal tongs and spatula would have been ideal.

Like I said, we had a great time, and we would come up again. Thanks for sharing your house with us!
