About the property

Condo, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-3)

This brand new penthouse suite 1000 sq ft + is located on the top third floor of the newly-built Ouray Alchemist building in the heart of town. Bi-directional pleated shades offer the excellent combination of breathtaking 360 degree surrounding mountain views with just the right amount of privacy desired. It is the perfect romantic haven for enjoying the numerous activities in the adventurous Ouray area.

There is a 400 sq ft deck that gives you private views of the Chief Ouray Mine, Cascade Falls, the Amphitheatre and Twin Peaks. In addition there is a small breakfast balcony facing Main Street with a giant Douglas fir just to the south providing shade and privacy to those who want to see what is going on around town.

The Ouray Alchemist is a long-time project for Curtis and Nancy. Curt has been collecting pharmacy artifacts for many years. The commercial space features a historical collection of pharmacy memorabilia dating back to 350 BC. The collection is a tribute to the history of pharmacy, containing many hand-blown label-under-glass bottles with the original drugs (herbs and roots) with an emphasis toward mining and Colorado pharmacy history (such as the oldest written prescription in Colorado). It is a memorable tribute to pharmacy worth seeing during your stay. Pharmacists Curt and Nancy will do the best to make your visit well worth it. The Ouray Alchemist, what we call our retail area and museum, has just been featured on the cover of Bottles and Extras - Jan/Feb issue along with an article. We are also having an article written about us in GV Magazine. This stands for Grand Valley and is mainly distributed around the Grand Junction area. Grand Junction is just a two hour drive from Ouray.

The Ouray Alchemist building is unique to the Ouray area. Enjoy the whimsical finial portraying the sun, moon and stars. The gargoyles positioned on the four corners of the copper-domed tower by tradition offer protection and happiness to those who enjoy this incredible suite.

About Nancy Haggar

Originally from the Midwest Curt and Nancy took different paths to Colorado before meeting in 2002 at Aspen Drug in Aspen CO. Pursuing his long-term dream of having a historic pharmacy collection exhibit led Curt to purchase fixtures to restore from Aspen Drug which was closing. Since all fixtures were for sale Nancy having worked there eleven years was thrown in the deal...well, not really, but it makes a good story. We share a common passion for the history of pharmacy so it made sense that we would get better acquainted as time went by, marrying in 2006.

Nancy Haggar purchased this condo in 2010

Why Nancy Haggar chose Southwestern Colorado

Ouray is called the Little Switzerland of America because of its unique dramatic alpine beauty. Surrounded by mountains it is the gem of the Rockies. We have never been to a more beautiful place. Curt was already living in Ouray when he met Nancy. There are outdoor activities here and nearby for every season. Skiing is close in Telluride and Silverton as well as Purgatory near Durango. Skiing is one of Nancy's passions. Ouray has inspired us to build this building and live out our dream. On the first floor is our commercial business that we call the Ouray Alchemist. Designed after an 1890's pharmacy with hickory hardwood floors and a tin ceiling, we feature antiques, jewelry, art, minerals, collectible currency and candy. The historic pharmacy museum behind the 1888 fully restored wall fixture is receiving rave reviews. With time there will be other fun things to come, like an old-fashioned soda fountain. Curt gives guided tours at 10 am and 1 pm on most days.

What makes this condo unique

This clean comfortable and cozy suite in the heart of town is furnished with modern amenities intermingled with beautiful antiques and art. Make yourself at home. There is not a better view of the mountains anywhere else. Despite being right in the thick of things the large curved windows with the adjustable up or down shades, the large deck and separate balcony give optimum privacy. Snuggle up and sleep with a view of the moon coming up over the Amphitheatre.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We received a lovely thank you note from our guests who stayed in May. It reads: Curt and Nancy, Just wanted to thank you both again for making our recent stay in Ouray so thoroughly enjoyable. You have created the most unique and wonderful rental space in Ouray, and we can't wait to visit with you again. Best wishes,
May 2012

My husband and I have stayed in the penthouse for our 5 year anniversary and loved the comfortable homy feel of the penthouse. The quality of the build and the details of providing literally everything we need were mind blowing. Make sure you have 4 wheel drive in the winter to get up the iced alley to the garage.

Owner's Response: Thank you for writing this review. We are so pleased that you enjoyed your stay at the penthouse. Yes, the alley can be icy. It is plowed regularly. I always suggest to our winter guests to use gravity to their advantage. The alley has a slight slope downward south to north. It is best to come in on the south side and leave headed north. Words I will add to this in the future is to go slow and look for the brown two car garage door about two thirds of the block down the alley on the left. That will hopefully help future renters. Thank you for bringing that up. We wish you the absolute best for the New Year and promise that when you return it will be just as clean and nice as this stay. I do the cleaning myself meticulously:) It is our pride and joy!

One of a Kind. Clean with Epic Views!

I took my Dad as a gift. He's an antique buff, and one of the most picky people on earth. From the moment we walked it, he couldn't stop raving about the quality of the penthouse, the colored lighting, the wood work, the neatness, and of course the views. He slept on the sleeper sofa and I took the king bed. We walked to Bon Ton for dinner which was great. We did the pharmacy museum with Curt and that was a mind blower, full of history and priceless antiques to articulate the stories. I'm excited to take my wife, and Dad again too. For couples or families of 4 or less, I can't imagine a better experience in Ouray.

Owner's Response: Matt, Thank you for your marvelous review! We are so pleased to hear that you enjoyed your stay at the penthouse as well as the tour of our pharmacy museum on the first floor of our building. Hearing that your Dad enjoyed it as well is music to my ears. We want to please our guests and make their stay the best it can be here in Ouray. It is such a magical, beautiful little haven of a town. We wish to always mirror its charm throughout the penthouse. Thanks again! We would love to have you return. Nancy

Incredible mountain vista

  • 5 of 5

Built above the apothecary store and museum in central Ouray, this beautifully designed condomium was our retreat for 3 nights. A very complete kitchen fully stocked, with coffee, spices and sweets had a glorious view of Box Canyon and the cozy town of Ouray. Within walking distance of hiking trails, a waterfall, natural hot springs, and several great jeep tour facilities, we had a fantastic stay. Two peaceful balconies with amazing mountain views were ours to enjoy. The king size bed was so comfortable! BonTon was our favorite restaurant and was recommended by the owner. Thank you, Curt and Nancy for this relaxing haven! Jan and Gary O'Hara

Perfect Central Spot

  • 5 of 5

We spent 5 nights here in July and loved every moment there. Stellar view from the bedroom side, awesome balcony (with more great views) on the living room side. Across the street from a coffee shop, a block from the grocery store. Beautiful place and so much better than a standard hotel room!

Wonderful place to stay and relax and take in the views!

  • 5 of 5

We reserved the penthouse for 4 nights for our vacation to Ouray. The penthouse is located on main street in downtown Ouray. It is close to all the shops and restaurants and they are an easy walk. Curt met us for the check in and gave us a tour and explained how everything worked and where things in the penthouse were located. Nancy did a super job decorating and all the amenities are provided. While it's a really nice place to stay, the highlight of it all are the views. They are incredible. Surrounded by the mountains, you have a view from every window. We ate breakfast on the small deck at the front overlooking main street and spent time on the large back deck reading and just relaxing. The view of the stars at night is incredible. They also have a private parking garage to park your vehicle in as well. (small warning: I drive a Toyota Tundra with a CrewMax cab and it just fit, both height and lengthwise, so if you have a large vehicle, it might not fit). It wouldn't have been much of a problem though as there are parking spaces on the street in front. We would highly recommend staying here to everyone!

Owner's Response: Thank you Brett and Annette for your review! We are so glad that you enjoyed staying in the penthouse with all its breathtaking views. The decks make it so much fun! The front deck to Main St is shaded on the south by a large pine tree. It does not block the views but adds to the comfort and privacy of the deck so you can see what is going on in town and watch the hummingbirds. The large back deck off the bedroom provides views of Cascade Falls, Chief Ouray Mine and the gorgeous mountains that make up the ampitheatre. We aim to keep the penthouse the best and cleanest place to stay in Ouray. Most couples come here for the romantic nature of the town and want a pristine, comfortable and private place to stay. Ours is the perfect place! We are so glad that you enjoyed your stay.

Loved this townhome!!

We've stayed in Ouray several times and this time decided to splurg, WOW. Awesome location, phenomenal views, immaculate and cozy. So glad we stayed here. Laying in bed watching the full moon and snow fall was incredible. Curt went over and above to make sure our stay was wonderful and Nancy was quick to communicate with us. They had everything and more you could need. Definitely will be returning! Highly recommend staying here!! Thank you Nancy and Curt for providing such a wonderful atmosphere for our vacation and the wonderful hospitality. Happy New Year!

Owner's Response: Happy New Year to you too, Lynn and Don! Thank you for writing your review of the penthouse. We enjoyed having you here and are glad that you plan to return. The outstanding beauty and peaceful nature of Ouray was our inspiration when we built the building in 2010. We felt Ouray needed a really special place to enjoy the views and all the activities in luxury and comfort - a home away from home - that you can relax and be comfortable in. We wish you a happy and blessed 2016.
