Why the Owner Chose Ashland: This property has been a dream project. I purchased the bare land in 2007 and began construction in the Fall of that year. The Chalet was completed in February 2009. As with all new construction on acreage, the little projects are constantly ongoing!
If visiting in Winter months (and possibly Spring and Fall), it is advisable to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle equipped with tire chains. Although 4-wheel drive is not usually necessary, Mother Nature has surprised us with moderate to heavy accumulations of snow!
The Unique Benefits of this Chalet: If you want peace and quiet with a spectacular view, then this is the place for you! Perfect for family gatherings while only 15 minutes to Ashland traveling North on I-5.
I am a Social Studies teacher at a local high school and have been teaching for 25 years.
I enjoy all outdoor activities such as golfing, hunting , fishing, skiing, sailing and scuba diving.

This property has been a dream project. I purchased the bare land in 2007 and began construction in the Fall of that year. The Chalet was completed in February 2009. As with all properties on country acreage, the little projects are constantly ongoing!
The Colestine Valley has its own unique physical climate. It may be raining in the Rogue Valley and the sun will be shining in the Colestine Valley!
Additionally, many people do not know that there is a large Buddhist Temple below the chalet in the valley. I always recommend to visitors to visit the temple for a half day trip. It is 3 miles down Colestine Rd. off the Mt. Ashland access road.
Take the time to clear your mind and "plug-in" to the positive energy of the valley.
Nice cabin, amazing views, owner was quick to respond to questions, everyone loved it. Well-stocked kitchen and bathrooms (all appliances, utensils, tools, towels, etc.) Cabin was clean upon arrival. Close access to trails nearby. The only reason I gave it 4 stars - there are no doors on the master bedroom or bathroom, as well as no shower door. This made it a little awkward throughout our stay, but definitely not something that ruined our time there.
Paul was a very gracious host and a prompt communicator.
Nice, comfortable house. Fully functional kitchen. Great views of the nearby mountains. Quiet country setting. Nice master suite with king bed and separate bathroom with tub and shower. Some may not like that the upstairs room did not have a door and no door to bathroom and shower stall area. The area is private from the downstairs.
There are some small details that need addressing that were relayed to owner; leaking toilet, no remote for a ceiling fan. This was not an issue during this trip, though when hot, would imagine the fan would be helpful in cooling the house. A hot tub was advertised, though was not functional, no water was in the tub. We would have used it, especially as this was a get together to mountain bike the area.
We definitely enjoyed our stay at the chalet. We had 3 families getting together here for a vacation and there was ample room for us all. The chalet had a nice overall view and the stars at night were awesome. We even got to see some deer roaming around occasionally.
With that said there were some definite items that could use some improvements. The crib that was mentioned as amenity that we were hoping to use was held together with duct tape and had an egg crate bottom to it. There was no way we were putting a child in it. The BBQ was unusable. It was very small for any type of group trying to rent the house and was very worn, unclean and we could only get one side lit. It just attracted numerous bees and unfortunately we had to use the oven for all our cooking.
The chalet could have used another once over in cleaning. Many of the dishes we pulled out of the cupboard were not clean and had to be rewashed along with many stains on the rugs and carpets throughout the house. There was dust on the blinds and night stands throughout the bedrooms. The towels could have used an upgrade as they were a bit shabby. The dressers were unusable due to many of the drawers being broken and the others stuffed full of linens you could not open them. Along with a used bar of soap found in the shower.
I would also recommend bringing a fan or two. The chalet gets very warm during the day with no screens on the window to be able to open for airflow, and bees were an issue if we opened the doors.
Also there is a cable railing around the deck which we had to be very cautious about with the smaller children.
The property was only 15 minutes from Ashland which we found many things to do in town.
The owner was very responsive with emails and any questions we had.
We enjoyed the rural setting, privacy and quiet of the house. We found the owner easy to work with and the house adequately supplied. We did find the house to be a bit more rustic than expected with no door on the upstairs bedroom and the upstairs bathroom with two upper walls open to the living room so you could hear anything going on in there. Kitchen was adequate and we hosted several large get-togethers.
We rented the chalet for a reunion of old friends. The six of us all loved the spectacular view from the wrap-around deck. The place was clean and comfortable and suitable for our needs. The location is terrific if you want a quiet retreat, yet still close enough to Ashland to enjoy the Shakespeare Festival.
All in all we had a wonderful stay and would highly recommend the chalet to anyone looking for a quiet getaway in southern Oregon.
