The love of nature and desire to be near water with peaceful surroundings has always been a dream of mine. After living in Ma all my life, I moved here to the beautiful Adirondacks in 2009 with my husband Doug.
Cheryl purchased this cabin in 2006
Doug and I enjoy the challenge of finding undesirable properties in dire need of rehabbing. It must have the right location though. We somehow have seen their potential, where most would have run away..fast!
When we first looked at this neglected, overgrown property with a poorly laid out, run down cabin, we excitedly began brainstorming on how to transform this ugly duckling into the peaceful, charming beauty it is now. The bigger the challenge the greater our motivation. With a lot of ideas, hard work, some hired carpenters when the tasks were just too much. the dream was complete. The final result..a cozy, rustic, yet updated cabin with an exceptional view of the Sacandaga River.
We did all that while our home, and jobs were in MA. We lived in MA, but our hearts longed for the day we could make Northville (Benson) NY our home. Well...long story short, in 2009 we sold our home in MA and moved into the cabin while our home next door was being built. Ten months later we moved out of the cabin into our new home.
The cabin was just too special to not share with others so we decided to offer it as a vacation rental. Now into it's 5th successful year, our many very pleased, happy guests long to return. The numerous comments left in our guest book along with the rave reviews on the Home Away site speak for themselves.
We strive to make vacations for each of our guests special, while creating wonderful memories, which will leave our guests longing to return! The many amenities along with it's appealing, comfortable furnishings, peaceful river views with nature surrounding the cabin make this a unique vacation destination.
We welcome you to experience this wonderful exceptionally cozy, romantic cabin as so many guests have already!
I can't say enough about this wonderful property! The cabin was spotlessly clean and well equipped. There was nothing missing we could have asked for - there was even shampoo and conditioner in the shower! As many previous reviewers have noted, the bed was incredibly comfortable. Getting out of bed in the morning was the only chore of our day. Doug and Cheryl were very helpful throughout our short stay. Doug suggested a lovely hike for us to take, and was kind enough to let us interrupt his busy day to drive us up the river and supply tubes (and Cheryl dug up a floating cooler!) so we could tube back to the house. The location of this cabin is wonderful with riverfront views and close access to the lake. We were also able to use their kayaks for a quick trip out on the lake. We couldn't have asked for more and we will definitely be back again, hopefully for a longer stay!
It truly is picture perfect. The cabin is cozy, beautifully decorated and inviting. Cheryl and Doug know what hospitality means.
This was our second stay at this property. My wife and I consider it the ideal getaway. Doug and Cheryl make our stays feel like coming home to family. I enjoyed a wonderful rainy afternoon reading on the porch. The washer and dryer are greatly appreciated, along with the amazing bed and proximity to the river. Doug and Cheryl, thank you so much for all you do to make our stays with you such a pleasure!
This cabin was clean, comfortable, and in a beautiful location. Everything we needed for our stay was provided. They even had a washer and dryer in the cabin. I would definitely stay there again. We enjoyed sitting on the porch reading and watching the hummingbirds come to the feeder. There were also several nice hiking trails nearby. My husband appreciated that the internet connection was good.
My husband and I spent much of our first day inside the cabin to just decompress from life. We slept, sat on the porch and watched the multitude of birds outside the large picture windows where bird feeders and hummingbird feeders hang. Inside the cabin is just as lovely as the outside. About the only thing I did the first day was to hike the miles of trails that meander up the mountain behind the cabin and stroll down to the river. I ran into a deer behind the cabin. FYI...I hiked the trails alone and felt completely safe. You really can't get lost. The trails are mostly marked. But even though some were not, you either go up the mountain or down. You won't get lost in the woods. Plus, the trails are so incredibly well groomed, you won't have issues with accidentally getting off of them.
Doug and Cheryl are the perfect hosts. They were helpful with local things to do as well as supplying just about anything you need inside the cabin. I didn't have a waterproof bag for my camera and Cheryl dropped off one along with a ziplock bag. The kitchen and bath were stocked with everything we needed. There was even a huge supply of spices and ice packs.
Look at the photos. The cabin looks just like them. Cozy, comfortable and peaceful. We have Sprint phones and the owners were right that they wouldn't work at the cabin. However, we had cell service in Northville if you need to look at texts or messages.
I recommend the hike to Hope Falls. Take your swimsuit and towels in a backpack because there are natural pools within the falls themselves as well as at the bottom of the falls. You'll feel like you found a secret!
My only wish is that we could stay longer. 4 nights is not enough.
This was perhaps the most peaceful, relaxing getaway we have ever had! The setting for the cabin is beautiful -- overlooking the Sacandaga River. The owners were most helpful in guiding us to hiking trails in the area. The cabin is so cozy with a bed that cradles you in comfort! The surroundings were so quiet. It was so delightful to sit on the porch with a cup of coffee in the mornings (or a glass of wine in the evening)!
The southern Adirondacks is the location of this awesome cabin in Benson NY, on a dead end road, with hardly any traffic.
The tranquil river view with nature all around you make this a truly special spot but, not so remote that you can't get to the quaint village of Northville only 4 miles away. You'll think you stepped back in time with it's restaurants, a grocery store, a farmers market (Tues and Fridays), a wonderful Adirondack gift store, a cute little boutique, five and dime, old fashion hardware store. ice cream parlor, coffee shop, gas, bank and drug store.
Sunday night summer concerts are just some of the wonderful things going on at the village park.
This great location offers so many hikes close by,(some with beautiful waterfalls). We will supply directions to these great spots and offer suggestions also.
Lapland Lake Cross County Ski Resort is very popular and is only 6 miles away and offers well groomed trails for skiing and snow shoeing.
We have two sets of snow shoes and snow cleats that you are welcome to use while staying at the cabin.
You can be as active as you want here or relax and rejuvenate at the cabin while getting away from your everyday stresses!
Enjoy the outdoor fire pit, watch birds feeding from the feeders, we have many deer visitors also.
The cabin is just north of the huge 29 mile Great Sacandaga Lake and the state boat launch is only 3 miles away. If you'd like to bring your boat to enjoy the lake we have plenty of parking.
Ski: Lapland Lake cross country ski resort is only 6 miles away.
Gore mountain is one hour away
Oak Mountain in Speculator is one half hour from cabin.
