Big Sky Chalet Rental Photos and Description

Chalet, 2 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 5)

Recently purchased and newly fitted out - a partner property to CASA MOONLIGHT (VRBO Listing 374629) and CASA FARELLONES Ski Chalet in the Andes (VRBO Listing #95623)

Luxurious ski out rental home apartment and ski lodge in Big Sky. Full home comforts in a relaxed and spacious ski chalet set in the Rocky Mountains, just one hour drive from Bozeman, Montana.

Located on a warm southern facing slope on the lower slopes of the Big Sky ski area, with panoramic views on three sides, Casa Big Sky is three minutes on skis (on groomed ski trail passing right through our property) from the White Otter lift which accesses the Big Sky base area and the mountain beyond. You can ski back to just below Casa Big Sky (and walk the final 250 yards on the road) from both Big Sky and Moonlight basin ski areas - or take the Cascade lift and then approach the home directly from behind.

Skiing and boarding are the main winter activities. There is ample lift serviced terrain in the 2 resorts, but if you feel the need to venture further, various back country options are available.

Summer activities in Big Sky fall into two main categories. Those organised by the resort, including Lone Peak Expeditions, Adventure Zip-line Tours, Climbing Walls etc and those to be found in the greater South West Montana area including Fishing and Rafting on the Gallatin, Hiking, Mountain Biking, Golf and of course all that Yellowstone Park ( nearest boundary - half an hour away) and West Yellowstone (just over an hour away) have to offer.

Casa Big Sky is a recently built two story private chalet with total built area of approximately 4,000 square feet set in the Cascade subdivision of the Mountain Village of Big Sky , commanding panoramic and unobstructed views of Lone Peak and the Big Sky and Moonlight Basin Ski Area.

The owners, who divide their time between Chile, Thailand and Montana, use the upper floor primarily during the ski season. The lower floor, which can be closed off from the main house as a self contained apartment, is available for rent at most times of the year.

Getting around the mountains (winter)

There are two primary ski areas in the immediate vicinity of Casa Big Sky (Big Sky and Moonlight Basin - now combined into one super resort - the largest in the USA). Connected to Big Sky, there is also a third ski resort, the Yellowstone Club - but this is a private facility and access there is by invitation only.

Big Sky ski area - can be directly accessed from Casa Big Sky. Put your skis on at the front door, take a diagonal traverse across the garden, and pick up on the groomed trail that runs right through the property and will take you down to the Cascade and While Otter ski lifts (about 3 minutes on skis). You can ride this lift in the morning without a ticket if you tell the lifty that you are heading to the ticket office at Big Sky. White Otter takes you across the back of the resort area and drops you just above the Big Sky base area - where the main lifts such as Swift Bear, Ram Charger and Explorer take you up to the Lone Peak and Andesite ski areas.

The other lift close by the house, Cascade is really only a real estate access lift - that you may chose to use when you return to Casa Big Sky, if you want to avoid the three minute walk on the more direct access.

You can return directly to Casa Big Sky from the top of Swift Bear, anywhere on Lone Peak or Challenger - or if you have crossed over to Moonlight, from the top of Six Shooter or Iron Horse.

There are several options on the route home, the two quickest end up at the Rising Bull Trail down to Rising Bull, which you will reach about 250 meters from Casa Big Sky. From there you will have to leave the groomed trail and walk (some do it with skis) the short distance up to the house.

A longer route which involves taking one more lift (Cascade) allows you to approach the home from behind on the ski trail that leads right though our property without the need to walk.

You will find detailed descriptions of these routes in the house - and I would encourage you to discuss the options directly with me when you are here.

If you are a complete ski novice, or are at a very low level of fitness, you might find the relatively gently ski trails (not ski pistes) that access Casa Big Sky more than you are comfortable with. If this proves the case, I recommend taking a three minute drive to the Moonlight Lodge or the deserted Pony Express lift car park (ten steps from car to lift) and starting your day there. You then have the added bonus of taking in some Après Ski in the excellent Moonlight Lodge.

Moonlight Basin - interconnects with Big Sky - and can also be accessed by a three minute drive - either up to the main Moonlight Lodge (a really good place for lunch or Après Ski) or from the Madison Lodge (there is a much larger parking area here) - just over the shoulder of the mountain.

About William Casa Big SKy

My wife (Thai) and I (British) are semi retired and now divide our time between homes in Phuket, Thailand (our previous home/business base) and now, chasing the snow, in Big Sky Montana and Farellones, Chile.

William Casa Big SKy purchased this chalet in 2009

Why William Casa Big SKy chose Big Sky

Quite simply Big Sky is the best, largest and least crowded lift serviced skiing in north America. We had been visiting (and renting) for extended stays for 5 years - and then in late 2009 found prices had become affordable, so purchased. The house is primarily for my wife and I, but when we do not have friends and family visiting, or when we are not in residence, we like to defray operation costs by renting the spaces we are not using.

What makes this chalet unique

The space and the peace and quiet. Free roaming wildlife - foxes, elk, moose and the occasional bear are our closest neighbors. Yet all this is within ski access (or 3 minutes drive) of two significant resorts.

Guestbook comments from the owner

I posted the review below for Casa Big Sky. I got a message stating they needed to confirm my email address - just let me know if you need any further information.

I just wanted to thank you again so very much for making our trip to Big Sky a wonderful experience we truly appreciate your hospitality and flexibility with our late checkout.

We look forward to staying with you again.

Wonderful Experience at Casa Big Sky

Our experience at Casa Big Sky was fantastic. William is a wonderful host and made our trip to Big Sky very enjoyable. The home is located conveniently between the Big Sky and Moonlight ski resorts. The apartment is very well equipped with cooking utensils, spices and other kitchen supplies. The beds were very comfortable with nice soft linens. We really enjoyed the use of the private hot tub after a long day of skiing. I would highly recommend staying at Casa Big Sky it was a wonderful experience for our group of three ski enthusiasts.

Great home for relaxing and skiing and good location

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay at Casa Big Sky! The five of us loved the space and location. Every day that we came back from the slopes we hopped in the hot tub to relax, and one night, we even saw a white fox peek its head around to see us. One note for snowboarders, it's easier to walk to the nearest ski lift unless you are very good at skating, and for all, there are helpful maps and hints on what slopes to take down the mountain to get back to Casa Big Sky. Casa Big Sky is also only an hour away from Yellowstone, and we made a day trip to West Yellowstone for a snowmobile tour of the park. It was the most incredible experience

Although the kitchen was small, it was perfectly laid out and we were able to make meals every night. The fireplace was comforting, and the bathrooms and bedrooms were the perfect size.

The owner was fantastic in terms of communication and making sure all was ready for our arrival. Will definitely stay at Casa Big Sky again.

Owner's Response: Thanks Coleen. To add some clarity on that note for snowboarders, the ski trail to the lift is not so steep, it's fine on skis but could require a little poling on a snowboard in one section. If you chose to walk however it is only 2 or 3 minutes.

Great location, view, and amenities!

  • 5 of 5

We had a great stay at Casa Big Sky! The location is fantastic, just minutes from the Big Sky village base with lift access just up the street. There's nothing better after a long day on the slopes to come home to a warm and cozy cabin with heated floors and a hot tub outside in the snow! The cabin apartment is well equipped with everything you need for a relaxing stay. There are directions on how to get to the cabin via slopes from the mountain. But we found it easier to drive and park at the village free parking. The owner was fantastic in terms of communication and making sure all was ready for our arrival. Will definitely stay at Casa Big Sky again soon.

Owner's Response: Hi Kerry, Great to know you enjoyed the trip so much. I just got back to Big Sky today and found ( I have been pushing the resort to do this for a year) that the return home shortcut that I have been using for years has recently been widened and groomed making the ski home really much easier. I will be sure to show this option to you when you return.

Owner's Response: So glad to hear that the trip was a success for all the family. If you enjoyed that dusting of summer snow (Yep, even in the middle of a warm summer, weather can change abruptly in the mountains and give you surprise) you might want to come back in the winter and enjoy snow in much more significant quantities. Whether summer or winter it will be great to see you return.

Great location

  • 2 of 5

Reason wasnt satisfied

1...No direct TV in main room (said they had it on contract)

2...Wifi was spotty. Sat outside to get best wifi

3...Washer/dryer took too long to do laundry. Dryer was more like steam dryer.

Other than those issues it was a wonderful place to stay. Great location.

Owner's Response: Quick response and fact check for prospective guests 1) There are two HD LCD TV's and two HD Direct TV Receivers in the apartment. One of the Direct TV Receivers failed during Greg and Peggy's visit and despite considerable effort, we could not get Direct TV to complete a repair before their short stay ended. 2) There are 3 separate Wi Fi Access points in the house. One of the three has a strong signal in the rental apartment. If logged into one of the others, the signal will be weak ( unless you go into the garden). 3) The washer dryer is a modern Japanese combo unit an LG WM3431HS with a 6 kg ( 13 lb) capacity - ( 9 lbs in the dry cycle). If overloaded the dryer function will be compromised. I have the same washer dryer unit in three of my rental units and have never before received any complaint. Greg and Peggy I would like once again to apologize for the difficulties that you had during your stay. The break down of TV, is a clearly a defect and even though this was beyond my control, I have offered to compensate you for this loss during you stay. As you know from the several calls I made with you from overseas , and from the three visits ( 80 miles round trip) my house keeper Geoie made to try to help resolve this issue, Direct TV' misdiagnosing the issue and then sending the wrong replacement part was the real cause of the delay in repair. (when we eventfully got them up to the house the day after you left, they ended up replacing the receiver and not the network adapter they had sent twice incorrectly) . I really did go to considerable efforts to try to fix this during you stay. I am just sorry I could not get the repairs done during your stay. On the Washer Dryer and the Internet, I am sill trying to work out why you had difficulties, despite the instructions provided. We know that all was well before you arrived and I had the internet and the washer checked after your departure and all was still working as normal. Clearly you must have had some configuration problems with the internet (you device preferring to stay on the weak signal ?) , and I suspect that if you were not not overloading the washer, you were perhaps causing problems by trying to terminate the wash before the completion of a programmed cycle. Any details that you can give me of precisely what went wrong will give me useful advice to try to prevent another guest ever facing the same problems.

perfect place to stay

  • 5 of 5

Spent 5 nights at Casa Big Sky and 4 days fishing the rivers in the surounding area. Coming back to the house at night to enjoy a glass of whine and the hot tub overlooking the mountain made for the perfect end to every day. The house was very clean and perfect size for our needs. Great little kitchen and living room, although we were hardly ever there to enjoy it. The area itself is so amazing that it is hard to spend any time inside.

Access to the garage was an added benefit as we were able to leave the top to our jeep inside and not worry about it sitting out all day. The bunk room had an open wall rather than a door but it is laid out in a way that works just fine for 2 couples.

If you are headed out here for the fishing i recomend checking out Wild Trout Outfitters at the base of the mountain in Big Sky. J.D. and the crew down there are a great group of guys and will forsure put you on fish.

We for sure plan on coming back to do more fishing in and around Big Sky and assuming Casa Big Sky is open we will stay here again.

Owner's Response: Hi Jeff, I am so glad to hear that the trip was a success and all worked out for you at Casa Big Sky. Thanks for the tip on Wild Trout Outfitters for the fishing supplies. As you know I am more a skier than a fisherman, so tips like these are always useful for our guests.

Secluded and Accessible

  • 5 of 5

My family and I (wife and 9 year old son) like to bounce around ski areas and get a feel for all the different resorts. This was our first time to Big Sky. We were at Casa Big Sky late in the season and stayed for 8 nights. We were lucky with the weather as it snowed nearly every day we were there! The mountain was incredible!

Bill's guidance was spot on throughout the entire process and everything was as advertised.

We felt that the unit was larger and more comfortable than what we expected from the website. What we enjoyed the most was the sense of seclusion. It was close enough to everything but in the evenings we really felt that we were in our own home away from it all.

We look forward to returning.

Owner's Response: Thanks Eric, so glad top hear that the trip was a success. I too used to bounced around resorts in Europe an North America seeking out the perfect one. It's close to 10 year ago now that decided that Big Sky was the one and have been coming back ever since. I hope you will do the same,
