Mountain Serenity - Near Vallecito Lake-Home Comforts in the Mountains! Come enjoy our cozy mountain retreat near the village of Vallecito, Colorado. Sit in front of the roaring fireplace or by the warm wood-burning stove while planning your choice of fun activities. Vallecito Lake is one of Colorado's largest and most beautiful lakes. Vallecito (pronounced 'vy-ya-see-toe') is only 23 miles northeast of Durango. The beautiful recreational area offers year-round enjoyment for the entire family.
The home is well furnished with delightful rustic mountain decor and charming antiques. The kitchen is modern and well equipped and there is a large dining table for great family meals. Games and puzzles are provided, as well as informational brochures about local points of interest and activities. There are 4 bedrooms with beds for 10 (1 king, 2 queens and 2 fulls) and 2 bathrooms. If you just can’t leave the modern world behind, high-speed wireless internet and Direct TV are provided free of charge. Cell phone coverage is strong.
Vallecito means “little valley”, and, as the name suggests, the village of Vallecito is nestled between two mountain ridges on the shores of Vallecito Lake. Vallecito has several eateries and small stores. The Pine (Piños) and Vallecito Rivers flow from the Weminuche Wilderness into Vallecito Lake.
The mountain and lake scenery is stunning. Grimes Creek and the Vallecito River are ¼ mile away from the house, and Vallecito Lake is a 1/2 mile to the south. Great fishing can be found at the lake, Pine (Pinos) River & Vallecito River, as well as many local streams. Access to the lake is free and open to recreation of all types. You can even rent a pontoon boat & fishing gear at one of the two local Marinas. Fishing is excellent with many game fish including Trout, Salmon, and Northern Pike.
If four-wheeling is your thing, there are miles & miles of off road trails to explore. You will find even more miles of hiking trails following our two rivers into the San Juan National Forest and the Weminuche Wilderness with over 2.5 million acres of public lands with many 13,000+ and 14,000+ peaks that you can explore.
Ride the '1880's' Durango Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, or visit Mesa Verde Anasazi Ruins, visit Silverton’s Mining Town, or soak in the healing hot water in Pagosa Springs, shop or see a movie in historic Durango. Enjoy a day in the quaint town of Ouray, America’s Little Switzerland, or spend a relaxing summer evening at the Bar-D Chuckwagon supper and show. There are excellent golf courses, numerous museums and of course... the scenic million dollar highway.
There are just as many winter activities such as Snowmobiling, Cross-Country Skiing, Snowshoeing Downhill/Alpine/Nordic Skiing or a Dinner Sleigh Ride at Durango Mountain Resort (Purgatory) and nearby ski areas. The house is not “ski-in/ski-out”. The house is about 1 hour from Durango Mountain Resort and 1 ½ hours from Wolf Creek Ski Resort.
We think our mountain home is a peaceful refuge from our busy world. We’re sure you’ll agree!

We honeymooned in the Durango area 20 years ago and have been in love with the area every since. Our three kids love the mountains year round, too. We enjoy the winters with skiing and snowboarding by day and puzzles, hot chocolate and roaring fires by night! The summers are spent hiking, biking and enjoying the beauty of the mountains as much as possible!
When we started looking for vacation homes in the area, this is the first house we looked at and it was love at first sight! The house has unique charm and character. In addition, the setting is so picturesque! Waking up to the beautiful mountains is an awesome way to start the day. We love that the hiking trails, rivers and lake are so close.
Staying here is peaceful and relaxing. The place doesn't feel like a rental - it feels like home. It is the perfect place to escape from the hustle and bustle of today's busy world!
We rented this charming "cabin" for 3 nights in the middle of the week for a quick family get away/reunion. It was thoroughly enjoyed by all. It is a little less remote than I assumed from the pics. With 2 nice living areas, dining room and the awesome back deck, we loved all of the common spaces to gather. The bedrooms were nice, roomy, and well decorated. The great room was beautiful. The kitchen was nice and well equipped with all of the modern necessities.
The deck was definitely the favorite spot to gather. The big table and pine deck chairs were nice and comfy to visit and watch all of the wildlife. We had one bear visit a window at 4 am, and we were able to see one bear strolling around outside at 7 pm. Pretty cool. A family of raccoons hung out in a tree just up the road and there were also a few deer and lots of birds, bunnies, squirrels and chipmunks running all around. It is close to the river, creek, lake, hiking, sightseeing and not too far from town if you need to make a trip.
The only negative was that we were there in mid July, and it did get a bit warm in the house (heat/no AC), especially up stairs. There are fans in each bedroom, but a couple of box fans at the windows downstairs made all the difference. Too bad we had to close the windows to keep the critters out at night.
We highly recommend this rental cabin. It is a very beautiful property with lovely accommodations.
We rented this cozy home loaded with ambiance for the weekend of our daughter's wedding by Vallecito Lake. Our booking was for our extended family, but we ended up having two casual gatherings here with friends from out of state stopping in for visits. It was absolutely perfect and reminded us of our log home in Alaska... The other guests have listed the multitude of amenities, but I want to emphasize the suitability of this home for families with children. The main trafffic areas are natural slate tile, which are not slick when wet and are virtually indestructible. I could relax when feeding the 2 year old in the high chair provided, because the food that ended up on a kid-friendly surface was easy to clean up. We brought our bikes and easily navigated the area without our car. Not only did we love this home, we took photos of the features we want in our dream home. Fantastic place!! Thank you!
This beautiful rental was truely a home away from home. We slept 10 adults comfortably and still had plenty of room for activities inside and out! Every amenity was provided in the kitchen, we brought a few of our own small appliances and didn't even end up needing them. The owner and housekeeper Kay were both extremely friendly, personable and helpful! I would highly recommend and will definitely stay here again in a heartbeat!
Our family (8 adults, 4 children) loved our stay in this beautiful home. The home was everything we expected and much more. The owners have it stocked with everything we could have possibly needed. We felt like we had just stepped into someone's cozy mountain home. There was plenty of space for all of us. We enjoyed morning coffee on the back porch and taking evening walks around the area. We spent a couple of days hiking in the area with it's stunning views. Durango was an easy drive. The general store/restaurant about 5 minutes away made amazing breakfast burritos. We hated to leave and highly recommend this home to anyone looking for a mountain vacation.
Our family (three generations!) thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this beautiful mountain home. We enjoyed the abundant amenities and the beautiful surroundings. We walked on nearby hiking trails. We could hear the sound of the river from the house while you sit on the porch enjoying the wildlife just a few feet away. When it rained, we stayed inside and roasted marshmallows in the fireplace and played games. It was a great time for our family to make some wonderful memories of time spent together in beautiful surroundings. We'll definitely do it again and highly recommend it to others.
We had intended this weekend to be a fishing weekend , but the snow melt and weather did not really cooperate. This gave us an opportunity to enjoy the house. I would highly recommend this property for families. There are great hiking trailheads nearby. We had a great time.
