About Hala Khouri
Max is a retired school professor and his wife, Joan, an artist and writer, own the property. We sought a second home in the country for summers and holidays as well as to experience a different lifestyle from our urban life in Brooklyn. Upon retirement, this became our permanent home. The original house (which was built in 1825) burned down and was totally rebuilt in the similar style, in 1990. We now live in California for most of the year so we can be close to our grandchildren.
Hala Khouri purchased this House in 1965
Why Hala Khouri chose Leyden
We wanted lots of nature and we got it. Mountains, the river, open skies and our garden are the highlights. Great memories were created for our family here: swimming in the river, reading by the fire, hiking on our property, and great meals with fresh food from the local farmer's market.
Sports & Adventure Activities
The photos do not do this property justice! It's a beautiful, bright home with spacious rooms. The libraries were amazing - anything and everything you could possibly want to read curled up on one of the comfy sofas. The setting is gorgeous. The location was just 15-20 minutes away from Greenfield and Shelburne Falls for access to activities and restaurants. The family of 4 spent time exploring the river and meadow, tossing a football in the yard, playing board games, etc. Hiking nearby was a good way to stretch our legs. We used the gas grill for a cookout. Jeff the property manager checked in on us and made sure we had what we needed for a great time. We had a wonderful family weekend here.
great ski trip getaway w close friends - president's day weekend 2017
we had such a great time in hala's Colrain home this past weekend. the location is great, the home is beautiful and clean, furnitures comfortable, the kitchen well stocked, and there were a lot of art pieces and books to look at to pass time with. it made me want to have a vacation home like this for myself. jeff, the property manager, was particularly helpful and spent a lot of time with me on the phone going over the logistics (very easy to find the house and the key), the areas and restaurants that we can check out according to different interests, and just overall very sweet and welcoming. it was a great and much needed getaway with close group of friends and i'm glad we stumbled upon this home, will definitely want to come back.
green river beauty
We enjoyed our three day stay very much. The home is beautiful and well cared for. Everything we needed was easily located and worked well. We would gladly stay again in the future. This is an exceptional home. We recommend it to you enthusiastically.
Lovely Quiet Vacation Spot
We stayed for several weeks at this lovely vacation home. Just as the caretaker promised it had a magical quality to it. Upon first arriving you will find a sweet farmhouse surrounded by green hills and fields, along the Green River. The house is spacious and comfortable, full of the artifacts of an interesting family life. The bedrooms are comfortable with plenty of linens, the sunny bathrooms have deep soak tubs, the living areas are lived-in in a good way, and the kitchen has absolutely everything you need for small family meals or feasts. We came to relax, spend time together as a family and with friends, and explore the quiet beauty of the area. No big attractions, no bling, no fancy restaurants, not much night life -- but great walks and bike rides, covered bridges, interesting historical explorations, fresh farm food at local markets, and most of all a quiet little river to play in. We took our young son to the river at least once a day to play on the rocks, swim, make leaf boats or hunt for salamanders. We went to bed listening to the running river and a chorus of crickets. The stars at night, oh my!! We biked to the covered bridge in Vermont at least twice and week and had a picnic before returning. The caretaker took care of every little thing that came up quickly and graciously. He is a wonderful source of information about many things! We explored the area towns with their beauty and arts, but our favorite days were spent reading in the house, doing yoga on the porch, playing by the river, grilling outside, and going to sleep to the wondrous night sounds.
PEACEFUL GETAWAY FROM IT ALL
This house was perfect for what we wanted - to get away from everything but be close to Deerfield, Massachusetts. The kitchen was modern, large and well-equipped. The rooms were welcoming and bedrooms very nice. The Green River across the street was a short walk to nature and adventure. It was a short drive to Greenfield, Massachusetts for groceries, antiquing, dining. We would definitely return.
We stayed here in June, 2012. The house was better than described. The library was a real treat
with an eclectic array of subjects & titles. We really enjoyed beginning & ending our days sitting under
the huge evergreen in the yard. There was an abundance of wildlife, including a fox who passed through
the yard as if she owned it. We highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys peace, quiet, &seclusion
