We just spent seven wonderful nights at Ocean Cottage - and can't say enough about this beautiful property and central location. The pictures and description don’t do it justice; it’s more beautiful in person.
At the cottage, we spent time cooking in the fully-stocked kitchen, relaxing on the beautiful twin decks and even took the beach chairs down by the water for a lazy afternoon reading in the sunshine. Every detail was covered – and labels throughout the cottage made it easy to find what we needed. Breakfast and coffee on the lower deck became one of our favorite daily rituals. And the view – amazing . . . from the sun rising over the water to the fog rolling in across the bay and even fishing boats pulling up lobster traps.
For the location, it is situated between Camden (25 minutes) and Belfast (10 minutes) on a quiet, mostly residential road. It was close to Rt 1, and a great place to start our daily adventures to Acadia National Park (about two hours) and throughout the mid-coast region from small fishing villages to the local wineries. (Who knew that Maine produced so much great wine? It was mostly fruit based, versus grape. Try the blueberry - delicious.) The owner also provided a great book of recommendations, many of which we tried . . . along with about every lobster shack in the area.
Lastly, the owner, David was very responsive and easy to work with – and there is no doubt that he takes pride in his beautiful property and making sure guests have what they need for an enjoyable vacation.
I know I’ll be dreaming about our wonderful vacation for a long time . . . and will hopefully be back soon. Thanks David!
This cottage is a gem - the pictures do not do it justice. Every amenity I could expect or desire in a cottage was available, and the place was spotless and in excellent (like-new) condition. The furniture is attractive and comfortable, and the back porch is an amazing place to sit and watch the ocean and the sky. The grounds are beautifully landscaped. The street is fairly quiet, despite the large number of vacation houses in the area. Many of the houses closest to Ocean Cottage seem to be owner-occupied, so the immediate region is more like a neighborhood than a rental district. There is one neighbor, but the positioning of the house and the landscaping make for a fairly private experience. The wi-fi, the dish tv, the appliances all worked immediately and without any "interesting" behavior. The house is nicely ventilated, and we were happy to find several ceiling and floor fans available (especially since we arrived during a heat wave). We were entirely satisfied and more with the cottage itself.
One of the nicest surprises about Ocean Cottage was how incredibly convenient the location is. The site of the cottage itself has a very rural coastal feel, but it's less than 10 minutes to the Hannaford and the Reny's. For those who are not already familiar with the area, Hannaford is the region's major grocery store, and Reny's is the place you shop for anything else you might possibly desire for a week's vacation. The Belfast Hannaford is one of the major stores, not one of the smaller ones.
A 10-15 minute drive puts you in Belfast center, with the car already parked. A 20-25 minute drive puts you in Camden center, looking for parking. A 90 minute drive (early in the day) puts you at the Acadia visitor's center. In short, the cottage offers both a perfect location for secluded days relaxing by the shore and the perfect jumping-off point for exploring the upper mid-coast region.
My husband and I stayed in this cottage the last week of June and were blown away by how nice it was. We picked it for the waterfront location, which did not disappoint--at high tide the water actually covers the bottom couple stairs down from the deck. We rented kayaks (from Duck Trap Kayaks, which we found in the amenities binder that David kept in the house--they were also great) and we were able to just walk off the steps and straight into the kayaks to go for a paddle. The rest of the house was even nicer than it looked in the photos. The rooms were clean and well-appointed, and the huge windows overlooking the bay were a major plus. The house has every possible amenity, and the kitchen was even better stocked with cooking equipment than my own kitchen at home. The wifi worked fantastic and we really appreciated the location, nice and rural but easily drivable to some little towns and Young's Lobster Pound. David was great with communication and returned our security deposit promptly. We could tell that this was a real family cottage owned by people who really care about it--from the recently upgraded hardwood floors and furniture to all the little details like a high-quality iPod dock, huge DVD collection, and book of family games. Everything was so thoughtfully done and we are really looking to vacationing at this cottage again in the future.
My husband and I stayed here for a week in October of 2011, and we loved it! This was our first time staying in a vacation rental that wasn't a hotel or condo, so we were not sure what to expect. This place could not have been more clean and neat. David, the owner, was prompt and honest in his communication and with our security refund. We have recommended this cottage to my parents and their friends, and they have booked a stay for this fall. We had a great stay.
