About Lolly and Lindley

When at work, we are a university professor teaching architectual history, and a maritime-historian; but our hearts belongs to the Santa Cruz Mountains. Our family enjoys the central coast region and has for more than a century. You are invited to view our album on the linked YouTube slide show and then let us help you find the hidden paths around Santa Cruz and the San Lorenzo Valley.

Lolly and Lindley purchased this house in 1978

Why Lolly and Lindley chose Santa Cruz County

The Oak Tree on this property speaks for it self, it is AMAZING, as are the birds who come to rest. We chose this property 35 years ago, partly because of the open flat sunny meadow surrounded by forests with distant mountain views and partly because the geology is as varied in each direction as the potential activities nearby. Once in the house you may not want to leave but the redwood forests, beaches, and cities of San Francisco, Monterey, Carmel, San Jose, Palo Alto and Sunnyvale are all with in reach.

If you are looking for crowds, noise, fog, traffic -- go someplace else. We are tranquility, blue skies, white fluffy clouds, bird song, deer, wild turkeys and brilliant starlight.

Ben Lomond Bungalow, in Santa Cruz Mountains is place that defines California Central Coast living at its best and the line between indoor and outdoor living spaces dissolve. Now you have the chance to enjoy our hard work great neighbors, trails, and access to every thing on the central coast including the zip line at Mt Herman as you move from platform to platform through the tree top canopy.

On the mountain, two miles from our country retreat is a venue for quality music at the Don Quixote's Interntational Music Hall.

Fishing license and small craft rentals are available at Loch Lomond or the Santa Cruz Wharf as well as other places around the county we can help you find.

What makes this house unique

The trails around the ranch will lead you past a pond, year round streams and a host of wildlife. The sunset trail above our home leads to a panorama vista overlooking the coast and nearby valleys.

Behind the property you will find Quail Hollow Ranch, an equestrian park first developed by the founders of Sunset Magazine as their weekend home.

We are close to many state parks and the redwood trees beaches and fun and creative shopping areas. We look forward to sharing our list of fun places to play and eat; however, if you are not able to escape leave work, satellite conference rooms and office space is available within two miles.

The rich and varied history of the region is recognized as one of the most significant biological treasures in the state of California, the Zyante Sandhills Zone support a unique community of plants and animals found only in Santa Cruz County.

Guestbook comments from the owner

2010-07-17 "(5 out of 5) This is a great home in a wonderful area. Everything you need is there including a fully equipped kitchen! Big yard with beautiful views. There are tons of outdoor activities to do, including a one of a kind zip line through the Redwoods at Mt. Hermon. Our family definitely enjoyed our 3 month stay in Ben Lomond."

Gorgeous retreat!

  • 5 of 5

We truly enjoyed our stay at this gem of a vacation home.

It was a very well maintained place, beautiful fully stocked kitchen to cook in, lovely grounds to enjoy, awesome hot tub and peaceful environment, yet all within a short (and scenic) drive to Santa Cruz and the boardwalk, much preferred to staying in the crazy "hotel zone" and city where you can get stuck for the same amount of time in traffic and have just as long to drive without the beautiful surroundings of the back roads.

The beds were extremely comfortable, the owners very friendly; they not only walked us through everything when we arrived, but before emailed us local goings on and reviewed specific things around the house that might make make our stay more enjoyable (where toys were for kids, where a night light was if that helped for the kids, for example) and were a delight to interact with. There were even extras she left like a robe out on the deck near the spa and slippers that made it feel almost spa-like at times. We truly could not have enjoyed ourselves more, and would highly recommend it as well as stay there again.

Owner's Response: Cari, Thank you for your time and thoughtful review. We are only able to enjoy this fantastic piece of central coast real estate ourselves by sharing it with our wonderful guests. This have been a grand experiment to see if we could find a group of people that would like to return time and time again to enjoy the Santa Cruz mountains, and share a unique experience with their families. As you mentioned we are not in the beach scene so it is really only word of mouth of our guests that keep us full. During the winter time our return guests might find specials from time to time, with rates as low as $150/day Sunday to Thursday and $250.00 on Sat. And Sun. Please do not hesitate to keep in touch. Warmest Wishes, L. and L.

Beautiful, Well-Appointed, Peaceful Retreat

  • 5 of 5

I would definitely recommend this rental. The home was clean and well maintained, and the description of the property is accurate. The house is not very large, about 1100 square feet, but it was more than adequate for our family of 4. The kitchen was my favorite part of the house, as it has everything you might need for cooking meals. The only thing I might recommend in the house is larger fitted sheets for the beds, since they did not fit the mattresses and came off every night. There are plenty of towels, cleaning supplies, and household items. Our 2 young children loved the hot tub and the swing under the gorgeous oak tree outside. We brought our two dogs, so the front fenced area was nice to have. The surrounding nature is peaceful and calming. We saw deer everyday, as well as wild turkeys that came to the yard. The location was ideal for us, since we wanted to feel somewhat secluded but wanted easy access to Santa Cruz. We visited Roaring Camp Railroads, Henry Cowell State Park, and Highlands Park as well as the Santa Cruz Boardwalk, Natural Bridges State Park and Ano Nuevo. Keep in mind that the Trout Valley Inn burned down in June of 2016. My major complaint about this rental was that there was no written or printed guide at the house. The information about the rental is sent in the Home Away app, which was not accessible with my phone. That meant I had to plug in my computer to view the house rules, etc. If I did not have my computer with me, I wouldn't have been able to access the information once I got to the rental. Also, I really wanted to "unplug" so having to access information via technology was sort of a bummer. There is a binder at the house with manufacturer's manuals for the appliances, but I did not want to read manuals I wanted a concise summary of how to use the TV, air conditioner, hot tub, etc. which I did not have. I definitely recommend to the owners that they put together a written summary of how to use the appliances in the house, as well as the rules for checking out, etc. Being able to flip though a well written guide is much more relaxing than staring at a computer. That said, Lolly was extremely responsive and supportive when I had questions. Overall, a great rental in a beautiful area and ideal location.

Owner's Response: Thank you Toby for taking the time to review the property. These review statements are the best opportunity for other families to determine if a property is a good choice for them. Clearly you found that a vacation in the mountains held many advantages and you were able to enjoy many wonderful activities found nearby. I was sorry to hear the new sheets caused trouble, this is clearly something that a phone call could take care of. There are 10 more sets of a different brand of sheets in the trunk at the bottom of the bed and a housekeeper nearby to switch them out. But thank you very much for bringing this to our attention. I will have the housekeeper remove them immediately. Having a house manual book like the appliance guide collection is a terrific idea so that the introductory document does not walk away. I know that the welcome instructions sent early on in the reservation process do not always get printed out, read, and brought to the house. We will continue to offer our personal orientations to help our guests learn about on demand hot water, hot tub, and fountain, and fire pit safety. I hope that you will bring the kids back to enjoy the magic of the mountains in the fall, winter, and spring. Each season is wonderful, and brings different colors, smells, and experiences. The railroad holds chuckwagon dinner parties, and moonlit dances, the harbor hosts a lighted boat parade. The grass in the meadow gross tall and green and sways with the wild flowers in the wind during the spring. We hope you have a fabulous year and come back to see us again.

A Home Away From Home

  • 5 of 5

This was an outstanding trip made possible by an outstanding property and outstanding owners. This home is not your normal "vacation rental." It's a real home with all the amenities and tastefully furnished. You genuinely only need to bring clothes and any food you wish to prepare. The area is beautiful, very quiet, and the neighbors were very welcoming as well. This is the kind of place you want to take care of because it's that well appointed and maintained. Our trip was made much more pleasant because of the owners help. I have been traveling to this area for 25 years and the homeowner was thoughtful enough to send an email with a bunch of new places to go that I have never been. Thank you for a great vacation and we'll be back soon!

Owner's Response: We could feel your enthusiasm from afar Mike and enjoyed it on our end as well. Thank you so much for the photos of the wild turkey parade in the meadow. We will add them to to the hall of critter fame that will be going up this fall. We hope you have a great summer and come back soon. Great Deals are available for mid-week winter stays to our regular guests.

Great mountain get away

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in this lovely house for about 5 weeks during a move to the area. The house itself was in very good condition and the views around it were incredible. My family four LOVED the hot tub and gas fireplaces and I especially enjoyed the mountain views and trails just 5 minutes away. If you are looking for something secluded but also just 20-25 minutes from Santa Cruz, this place is a gem.

Nice house in a quiet neighborhood

  • 5 of 5

The Ben Lomond Bungalow offered a very pleasant stay for my wife and me and her parents. The open living room/kitchen layout allowed us to visit and catch up even when we were preparing meals in the well stocked kitchen. Plenty of pot/pans, table ware, utensils, keurig and drip coffee makers, etc. Preparing a full Thanksgiving dinner was easy.

The views out the kitchen and living room windows are of a VERY large oak tree and meadow-like yard. It was cool and a bit rainy during our visit so we didn't use the hot tub or spend much time sitting on the benches provided. We did harvest from the garden some herbs and a little lettuce to dress up what would have been our boring dinner salads! A short 5 minute drive to Felton gets you to a Safeway, CVS, restaurants, etc.

The bedrooms aren't large but are quite comfy with room to move around. We used the smaller extra room to store our luggage and used the closet in there to hang our clothes that we didn't want in drawers. The gas fireplace kept the main part of the house warm enough for us even though the outside temps were down at or below freezing at night. We didn't need the extra help of the radiant floor heater in the kitchen. The neighborhood is very quiet with the house on a cul-de-sac. The neighbors were friendly with a wave or hello when we were out in the yard or walking about.

The internet access was very good. We don't watch TV at home but did take advantage of the cable here. Seemed like a good selection of channels. My father in law was able to find his racing and football as needed!

All in all, a good stay. We would recommend this house to 2 couples or a small family.

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to write a thoughtful and informative review. I am sure it will help other people decide if this is the right property for them. It is important to us that our guests are comfortable and happy with their choice but as you describe we are indeed a unique property. We look for the best guests and try to keep our rates affordable. We are booking quickly for this year but still have a week open in Dec. a little time this spring, and several weeks open during the summer of 2016. If you think this property is for you for a return visit this year. Please book soon so we do not disappoint. As a side note, we are so sorry for what your community is dealing with with week. Our hearts go out to you.

Owner's Response: Michele, thanks for the review. SFGATE dot com published on Nov. 16th a wonderful driving circle tour of Santa Cruz and the Santa Cruz Mountains with details of a few of the remarkable things to see and do during a short stay. We are happy to provide our guests with a much longer list. Stay for a month and still not see all the wonders. We have a few days open in Nov. Dec. and Jan. but much of the spring and some of the summer is already booked. Please do not hesitate to check on your return dates before they are gone.

Only 30 miles from the hustle of San Jose and Silicon Valley is a different world, magic is here on Ben Lomond Mountain. Located on the central coast between San Fransisco and Carmel nestled in the hills above Monterey Bay Area, we are an easy drive to almost every where on the central California Coast and the San Francisco Bay Area. The picturesque historic logging villages of Felton, and Ben Lomond are both within 2 miles of the Ben Lomond Bungalow. Boulder Creek, home to one the worlds greatest Redwood Forests, is a few more miles down the road.

Behind our backyard is the Sunset Trail head leading from Quail Hollow Ranch Park. This 300-acre historic horse ranch is currently a nature preserve and home to a few horses, but is offers 15 hiking and equestrian trails.

Roaring Camp Railroad is where you will find a variety of well loved adventures. Travel back in time aboard a nineteenth century steam train from the Redwood Forest to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, Municipal Wharf, and Main Beach (AKA Steamers Lane); additional seasonal events are offered throughout the year.

A memorable stroll down Pacific Ave or West Cliff Drive might include a Monarch Habitat, Surfers Museum, or tour the UCSC Marine Lab with child docents.

State Parks surround us, Big Basin State Park, Henry Cowell Redwood State Park, Historic Wilder Ranch State Park, Quail Hollow Ranch Park, UCSC are an easy drive. Go a little further to find Sea Cliff Beach State Park, Elk Horn Slough in the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, Point Lobos Nature Preserve, and even Big Sur. North along Highway One you will discover elephant seals at Ano Nuevo, Davenport, the home of Odwala Juice and Bonny Doon Winery, lighthouses, and many remote isolated beaches, wind surfing, and other unique enterprises

Quick outings might include the 1-mile bike ride to the nineteenth century Mt. Hermon conference grounds where you may choose to whiz down a zip line (known as the longest on the central coast) through the tree canopy. Or pedal the 2 miles to the picturesque Village of Ben Lomond where the smell of chicken barbecue always wafts from the parking lot of the Ben Lomond Market. Rent a fishing boat or Canoe at Loch Lomond (3 miles up the hill) or fish in the San Lorenzo River, off the wharf or ask how to sign up for deep sea fishing in the Pacific Ocean.

Hiking through Big Basin Redwood Forest is a lifetime memory or visit the Highland Park or the 3 remaining Historic Logging Villages. Henry Cowell Redwood Forest and State Park is home to a centuries old Redwood Grove that features a self-guided nature path. The park has a picnic area above the San Lorenzo River. Anglers fish for steelhead and salmon during the winter (catch and release).

Shop till you drop on the Pacific Avenue Mall and enjoy the street musicians. Folks say the nearby Pasatiempo Golf course, a Alister McKenzie design, is as good as you can get for public (semipro) golf. Golf-week rates it #3 in California. The Seymour Marine Discovery Center is part of the Joseph M. Long Marine Laboratory, a research and education facility of the University of California, Santa Cruz just 10 miles away or drive a little further to the Monterey Bay Aquarium,

Follow paths to incredible vistas along coastal edges and high mountain trails that overlook the Monterey Bay and Pacific Ocean. Visit Santa Cruz's 300 historic homes dating from the 1850s through 1930s and its 247 structures of architectural significance that dates from 1930 through 1950. The Mountain Village of Boulder Creek is where you will find the streets found in a number of Hollywood movies because its historic charm is evident along each block, as the quaint shops of artisans, antique dealers, are mixed with the local fabric of the community.

World class jazz every Monday at the Kuumbwa Jazz Center in Santa Cruz is open to all ages. Santa Cruz Farmer's Market is every Wednesday located one block off of Pacific Avenue.

Take day trips to explore the California Coast from Big Sur and Carmel-by-the-Sea, to the Golden Gate Bridge and streetcars of San Francisco.

Colleges and university visits are a natural from Ben Lomond Bungalow. UCSC is 12 miles, CSU San Jose and CSU Monterey Bay are about 30 miles, Stanford University is about 40 miles and UC Berkeley is 70 miles.

Visit up to forty-five different Santa Cruz wineries. Winemaker Wednesdays at Shadowbrook Restaurant features 2 to 4 wines from local Wineries in a spectacular river front setting.

Barrel Tasting & Wine Dinner is held at Bonny Doon Vineyard every Thursday where you can glimpse into the winery & cellar. Barrel tasting is followed by a hosted three-course, prix fixe family style dinner paired with wines of Bonny Doon Vineyard.

Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, recognized as the best seaside park in the world, offers free concerts on the beach Friday nights. Don Quixote’s International Hall of Music, a tiny mountain venue offers fabulous intimate experience.
