We rented this lovely home for a long weekend during the summer. The house has all the amenities anyone would need and stayed very cool throughout the day and night. The kitchen is set up well for group meal preparation and the dining room table can accommodate 8 – 10 for meals or card games. All four bedrooms were comfortable and a room off the garage with bunk beds was a teenager’s paradise! There is also a pool table, darts and video games.
What is truly exceptional about this home is the back yard. We spent most of the weekend outside. There is a koi pond and a covered patio replete with comfortable couches and extra chairs; a table for dining and chaise lounges surrounding a perfect size swimming pool. The yard is private and large – enough room for kids to run around and play catch, etc. The landscaping and view of the nearby vineyards completes the package. There is also many wine tasting opportunities within walking distance, making this home a great location for enjoying Sonoma Valley wines.
Disclosure: We received a partial refund due to misrepresentations in the listing description and photos, the condition of the house, and numerous plumbing emergencies that took place during our stay.
The house was dirty: layers of dust and dried food on the floors, mildew in the bathrooms, and cobwebs with dead spiders and insects in most corners. Peeling wallpaper, missing molding along the walls and floors, and broken lights added to the general state of disrepair. Appliances were either unavailable or not working properly (microwave, espresso machine, dishwasher.) The "bonus rooms" were bunkbeds in a converted half of the garage. I have photos to document this.
The pool was green and cloudy, the backyard pond was part of an unsightly renovation project, and the side yard flooded due to plumbing issues the day we arrived. We spent no time outside because of this.
The upstairs shower leaked water into the living room every time we used it. I called the owner immediately, who never responded. When he did come by to work on the plumbing leak in the side yard, he said that the ceiling leak was an ongoing occurrence and shrugged it off. The water was turned off twice during our stay for repairs. On our final morning, the downstairs toilet began overflowing raw sewage while the upstairs shower was in use. We turned off the water, but it continued to flood the bathroom. I called, texted, and emailed the owner, to no response. His phone was not accepting calls, according to his service provider. In light of the emergency, I also attempted to contact him through VRBO/HomeAway, but they were unable to reach him. He did not respond for over 6 hours, long after we were supposed to check out.
The house is in a lovely location. That being said, I spent a great deal of MY vacation time dealing with maintenance issues, including an overflowing toilet on a septic system. I'm sure, with a lot of work, this could be a nice place to live, but it was not a relaxing or enjoyable vacation experience. The owner must realize this, as he demanded that I not leave a review in exchange for a partial refund (I did not agree to this provision.)
Every man's home is his castle....so I hesitate to write anything disparaging about someone's home. I think that this house should probably not be billed as a "vacation home" until some of it's issues are fixed. It has a lot of potential, but didn't meet our expectations.
The house was clean when we arrived (the housekeepers were still there, despite the fact that we arrived an hour after check in). The house sleeps many people, and even though we didn't use all the beds, the beds were comfortable, and the rooms were tidy. The fridge was clean, but the oven was not.
The house boasted a large tv, which worked well. However, the right side of the TV screen has a huge yellow stain on it, which is not only distracting, but impedes the view. The dishwasher ran, but did not clean the dishes (which is a problem when you are feeding a crowd all weekend). We ended up having to wash everything by hand. The flashing around the dining room window was hanging from the wall. The outside fan had bulbs exposed. The lounge chairs on the deck were missing their "pins" and did not sit up properly. One of the bunk rooms had a door leading outside that didn't lock. We had to push a dresser in front of it for safety. The family room had a huge dark stain on the ceiling as well. The living room door opened directly into the pond! Leave the door open & you are in the drink! The pond brought the mosquitos and we were all eaten alive by the end of the weekend.
The yard was the biggest disappointment. All of the decks were unsafe (low railings, no railings, split boards, drop offs). There were no vineyard views (views were of the highway). Debris everywhere! Dried grass, dog poop, construction materials all over the right side of the yard.
The house and yard need a lot of work before they can be safely rented out.
The pool was green for a couple days but finally cleared up. No decent pool floats, none of them held air. Lots of unfinished projects around the yard that were not pleasant to look at. But overall, was a comfortable place to spend a week although I expected something nicer for the money. Next time I'm booking a nice hotel for half the cost..
We recently spent some time at this wonderful place with family and friends (total of 8 of us; but we know the place can sleep many, many more) as we were out in CA for a wedding. The location was perfect as the wedding was right across the street at Chateau St. Jean.
The place was an absolute delight--great kitchen for cooking lots of meals together, lots of places to nap and snooze at night, wonderful location for walking to wine tastings and good food, AND the most fantastic backyard with tons of shade, a great pool for lounging, lots of seating under the sun and stars, and a natural fence that prevented our pups from wandering too far. I can't say enough about how much we enjoyed cooking on the grill, eating our meals outside, and sipping wine by the pool. As the evening approached we made s'mores on the grill, bundled up in hoodies, and enjoyed relatively bug-free conversation on the back patio under the deck.
The house is completely dog-friendly and our two pups enjoyed it very much. You're less than an hour from the dog beach (Dillon beach) which our dogs loved and very close to stuff in Sonoma and Napa. We really enjoyed having our fur kids with us and most everywhere we went in the area was dog friendly so they quite enjoyed all of the family time.
Thanks again to Bill and Cate for a great place in a beautiful area of the country. If we're ever out there again, and have a big crew (and dogs) with us, we're definitely staying at your place again.
The pictures and description do not do this place justice. The backyard has huge decks, flowers, a pool, a koi pond, and places to lounge and eat. We had a lovely time sitting outside in the warm evenings. The inside of the house is a little worn but well stocked with plenty of room. We actually counted 6 separate bedrooms and the 12 people who stayed at the house had plenty of space. Also, the kitchen was very well stocked with enough glasses, plates & cutlery. The pots and pans were high quality as well - a nice surprise in a rental house! We had a few tiny hiccups with things, but the owner was quick to respond and overall we had a smooth stay. It is a good value and I would highly recommend it for a large group who enjoys being outdoors.
My wife and I rented this property to enjoy the great weather and activities in Sonoma County. This house is in an ideal location, close to many great wineries along Hwy 12 (with several in walking distance), fantastic restaurants in Sonoma and Healdsburg, and a few great breweries (when you need a break from wine). There are also fun family activities - beaches, Lake Sonoma, the Russian River, hikes on Hood Mountain and Sugarloaf Ridge. The house itself has plenty of space and everything you need to enjoy your vacation. The pool is a great place to relax when it gets hot in the afternoon. Our son loved feeding the fish in the koi pond, and our dog had plenty of room to run around in the spacious yard.
