Lanesboro

Lanesboro is a historic village nestled in the Bluffs of the Root River Valley. Experience the spectacular paved Root River State Bike Trail, winding 60 miles through Bluff Country. Excellent for biking, hiking, and cross-country skiing, it runs along towering limestone bluffs, dense hardwood forests and peaceful small towns.

Besides receiving the Great American Main Street Award, Lanesboro was named one of 100 Best Small Art Towns in America by author John Villani and one of the 50 Best Outdoor Sports Towns by Sports Afield magazine. Outside Magazine featured Lanesboro as one of the '20 Best Dream Towns in America to Live and Play.'

Whalan

Whalan is located 4 miles East of Lanesboro, on the Historic Bluff Country National Scenic Byway. Whalan is a little town of about 35 people. The town is only 4 blocks by 4 blocks. You have the river on the one side and you are surrounded by magestic bluffs on the other 3 sides. Here you will enjoy the peace and quiet on would expect in a weekend getaway. The Root River State Bicycle trail runs right along the river and at the base of the bluffs for most of it's 60 mile trek.

Little known adventures

Book yourself a horse drawn wagon ride. Imagine riding thru the woods overlooking the Root River Valley. Relax being at peace with the great outdoors. The scenic overlooks are like no other in the area. Explore over 100 acres of wooded private property. Horse drawn wagon rides are available year around. The rides take about an hour. Half way thru the ride, you stop at a little cabin over looking the Root River Valley, where you can warm up for the journey back. It is a must do activity.

Bluff Country Jeep Tours, another wonderful way to explore the wilderness. You are taken from the bottom of the bluff, up to the top along private trails, that allow you to truly enjoy the outdoors. We take you places that you would be glad you were not hiking...:-) The switch back trails bring you from the river bottoms up 450 feet up to one of the most spectacular views imaginable.

Amish tours are another must see. We have several Amish communities to visit, and shop with.

About Tammy Hughes

Hello, and welcome to Cyclin-inn in beautiful Whalan, Minnesota. I am Tammy Hughes, the proprietor of the Cyclin-inn. I am originally from Duluth, Minnesota and have been migrating south ever since I became old enough to explore Minnesota. After spending 15 years in the Twin Cities, and escaping every weekend to go biking, kayaking, or horseback riding, I decided that I should make my move a bit further south. With the Root River / Root River State Bicycle Trail being the draw, I began searching for my dream property. In discovering Lanesboro with its majestic bluffs and scenic views, I fell in love. In 2001, I found my little haven in Whalan, just 4 miles east of Lanesboro.

During the first year, I was in love again with Litefoot. He is a half Belgian and half Appaloosa draft / riding horse. Living on the outskirts of the small community of Whalan, he quickly moved in. So in the mean while, I created the Cyclin-inn. Allowing you to enjoy the peacefulness of the small community and the great outdoor scenery right out the door on the Root River, On the Root River State Bicycle Trail. Please enjoy my home and treat it as your own. You will find all the comforts of home and more. The Cyclin-Inn is located on the Root River State Bicycle Trail, on the Root River and within a block of two city parks, and Gator Greens Mini Golf. Whalan has 2 places to eat, and an outfitter within walking distance where you can rent a bike, kayak, tube, or even a canoe. Within a few blocks, you can connect with Bluff Country's Jeep Tours, and even take a horse drawn sleigh or wagon ride.

Bring your family and friends to Whalan for a fun, relaxing getaway. On your way here, explore our National Scenic Byway, Highway 16. The town of Whalan offers peaceful tranquility and opportunity to explore the Bluffs of Minnesota.

Wonderful Trip

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed here several times and it is great each time. The house is clean and everything one would need is at hand. The location is very convenient, especially to the bike trail which is 50 feet away. We will definitely be back.

RUN A WAY DO NOT HERE

  • 1 of 5

First thing their is a FULL page of how YOU clean before you leave, VAC carpet, pull beds sheets, clean floors and more. The chairs out on the deck 3 were broken when we tried to set in them. The tv that's a joke. The washer on off knob fell off,so that was no good. The frig inside and out was so dirty and the shelf was broken. Their was very very hot upstairs the air cond or outlets did not work. Maybe when this opened it was nice NOT today. Remember YOU must clean when you leave.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your feedback. I am sorry that you did not enjoy your stay. It is always helpful to know what needs my attention. I did have a service man come in and fix the knob on the washer, I was waiting for the service apt. The fridge was not clean, that might be because you came 2 hours early, while we were out to lunch waiting for laundry to dry. When we arrived back at the house, you were all moved in, we just made the beds and left. I usually do a walk through to make sure that I did not miss anything, however, since I felt uncomfortable with you there early, I did not feel like I should be opening the fridge with all of you stuff in there. If it was not clean, you should of said something when we were there. I also understand that you were uncomfortable being asked to strip the beds of their linen and vacuum the floors. There have been many times that people have said to me, while I was stripping the beds or sweeping the floors, I found my ????. Even before I starting asking my guests to do this, I would say about 95% already tidied up out of respect and appreciation for the property owner sharing their homes with them. Since I am not a TV watcher, I did not fully understand the TV issue. Now I do. I did not realize that once our cable provider upgraded their service to HD, that on older TVs the picture would be grainy. I have installed a new HD, Smart flat screen TV. Thanks for bringing that to my attention. I just wish someone would of brought it to my attention sooner. The chairs on the deck. There are 3 plastic chairs, one swing and 3 rockers. I have looked at each and everyone of them, sat in them and I do not understand what is wrong with any of them? Nothing is broken. As for the air conditioning upstairs. Yes, that could be better. Since this house was built in 1895, there were no ducts put on the second floor, ok, there is one. When the new furnace was installed, they used the floor joists to run the air. It does take a bit of management during the peak hot season. You would have to use the ceiling fans and the box fans at the house to circulate the air upstairs, and it always helps to open the upstairs windows at night. As you can tell, this house has been a vacation rental for 9 years and no one has complained. Yes, it is warmer, but it is manageable. I do appreciate your feedback, and I do try and fix/change what is possible to make all my guests have an enjoyable stay. Tammy

Fun Weekend Getaway

  • 5 of 5

Our family had a great weekend at the Cyclin Inn. The setting was beautiful and restful and "away from it all", but close enough to have plenty of adventures in the area. And while we enjoyed the area attractions, we all found the house to be one of the favorite parts of our getaway. My teenager daughter and friend loved the neighboring ponies and goats while my husband and I enjoyed relaxing on the front porch, listening to the birds and watching the bikes glide by.

Iowa/Wisconsin Family

  • 4 of 5

Consider this actually a 4.5 rating. We had 5 adults and two toddlers. Plenty of room for all. The front porch was our favorite site, if we weren't on the bike trail, the nearby playground with the toddlers, or elsewhere. Like another reviewer noted - we did not have any issues with any of Minnesota's famous mosquitoes! Access to the large space in the garage for our bikes for overnight was wonderful. The patio between the house and garage was perfect for evening meals. The only reason it is not a "5" is that for our family with two toddlers, the Jacuzzi instead of a standard tub, made getting the kids in and out of the tub a bit tricky. (But THEY loved the big "tub"!) Plenty of equipment in the kitchen and a nice clean fridge and stove. The beds were comfortable, and there was room in the closets to unpack and get things out of the way while we stayed. Very nice accommodations, but not super fancy. But, if you want that, find a place that will take more of your money! Owners stopped by to see if there was anything we needed, but did not hover or impose. I would recommend the Cyclin' Inn to friends and family.

Three couples first bike trip together

  • 5 of 5

First time at the Cyclin Inn and not the last. Had a great time. Easy access to the Root River Trail. Sitting on the front porch you can watch bicyclist on the trail, deer walking around, birds flying by and not a single mosquito bite. Tammy and Duane were very kind and helpful but didn't intrude. The accomodations were great.

Location + Accommodation

  • 5 of 5

Located 4 miles from Lanesboro, just 100 feet from the bike trail, the CycleInn was a good fit for 3 couples. Plenty of parking space for cars and bikes, in a quiet location. Entire home is clean. Did not notice odors mentioned by other reviewers. Well-equipped kitchen, adequate dining area, comfortable seating in living room equipped with cable TV. Roomy first floor master bedroom with attached master bath. Another bathroom with shower on main floor. 2nd bedroom is somewhat small, with a double bed and not much floor space beside, no ceiling fan, but if you close the door, the air conditioning is adequate. 3rd bedroom with large bed, adequate floor space and closet, TV, ceiling fan and 2 windows. No, you cannot see the river from the house, but it's on the other side of the bike path, through the brush. If you're bicycling, you'll see the river off and on, where people are tubing and fishing. Proximity to the mini-golf is fun, with no encroachment by mini-golfers. Tammy's hospitality is tops! She was always nearby with help or tips, friendly and cheerful. We loved the view from the front porch while having coffee in the morning. Family photos add to the charm. Children's toys, games, reading material, maps of the area create a welcoming atmosphere.
