We have a beautiful, contemporary mountain home located at the end of a very quiet and private cul-de-sac in the West Meadows neighborhood of Kirkwood Mountain Resort. Our 2000 sq. foot home is located on a large (1/3 acre), private lot below the Two Sentinels. We purchased the newly built house in 2000 and are making it available for rental for the first time. The house is bright and sunny with fantastic views of the Red Cliffs in the front, and the El Dorado National Forest in the back.
This is the perfect vacation house for families as well as couples who enjoy great outdoor activities but want all the comforts of home during their vacation.
The house has 3 bedrooms, 2.5 baths, sleeps 8 and has a two car garage. We have a snowplow service that clears the driveway of the 500 inches of snow Kirkwood averages per winter. Kirkwood’s free homeowner shuttle will pick you up in front of the house and take you to Timber Creek – a five minute drive from the house. When backcountry access is open advanced skiers can take chair 6, climb up behind Glove Rock and catch fresh powder all the way back to the house!
Our home has all of the amenities you need for a wonderful mountain vacation, including a fully equipped kitchen, high definition home theater with a 50 inch Samsung 1080p HD television, HD Tivo and Blu-ray, an indoor spa as well as a two car garage. A large DVD library is available, and guests can stream Netflix movies as well as stream movies from Amazon on Demand. The great room’s wood burning fireplace heats up the entire upper floor of the house.
The master bedroom has a queen sized bed with en-suite bathroom and television. Downstairs has a full bathroom, one guest room with a queen-sized bed, and one guest room with two twin beds. The sofa sleeper in the living room also converts to a full sized bed.
We have a front-loading washing machine and dryer, along with a multi-zone audio system for the house, high speed (6 Mbps) Internet and Wi-Fi. An additional TV is located in one of the downstairs guest rooms, along with a Boston Acoustics clock radio that works with iPhones and iPods.
Skiers will love the large garage with room for plenty of skis and boards, ski tuning table, and prime location in one of the finest ski resorts in the USA. The cross-country skiing meadow is a 5 minute walk from the house. Adventurous and physically fit guests can make use of our 4 sets of Atlas snowshoes to hike up to the Two Sentinels from our backyard.
In the summer and fall enjoy the incredible view of the Red Cliffs from the large deck outside of the front of the house. Great hiking trails are nearby, along with horseback riding at Kirkwood stables, fishing and boating at nearby Caples Lake and Silver Lake as well as the hundreds of small hike-in lakes in the area, or mountain biking the slopes of Kirkwood (lift accessed in the summer) or the world class trails of South Lake Tahoe (the trailhead for Toad’s Wild Ride is less than 1/2 hour away).
Kirkwood skier for 28 years. Kirkwood homeowner for 10 years. I enjoy downhill, cross-country and backcountry skiing, as well as snowshoeing in the winter. In the summer you'll find me riding my mountain bike or taking my kayak out on Silver and Caples Lakes. My day job is founder and CEO of a Silicon Valley tech startup.
Jim Ambras purchased this house in 2000
Kirkwood has the best snow, best conditions, best terrain, and least crowds of any ski resort in Tahoe. It's also fantastic in the summer for hiking, mountain biking and boating. It's the "Alta" of Tahoe. When we started to look at Kirkwood properties we discovered that most houses in the West Meadows do not have garages or driveways. Our house has a nice big driveway and two car garage! We also wanted a house that got morning sun, and our house is very bright and sunny. We also wanted a newer home with a clean, contemporary design. Finally, the indoor spa was the closer for us!
Our house is located at the end of a cul-de-sac in the West Meadows. So while it's only 5 minutes from the chairlifts, it's extremely quiet and private. Plus, you can go out in the backyard, put on snowshoes, and do a 3 hour roundtrip hike up to the Two Sentinels. While our house is not ski-out, it is ski-in. When backcountry access is open you can go up chair 6, hike up behind Glove Rock, and ski through fresh powder in the trees to the backyard of our house. Experts only though! And snowboarders don't have the edges to keep the high traverse up, so two plankers only. We bought the house new from a Kirkwood ski instructor who built it. It's an awesome house, and we've decided to let other people enjoy this season by renting it out on occasion when we're not using it.
Two families each bringing a four year old up for a couple days in the mountains. We had a great spring ski weekend here and it definitely got my wheels turning about coming to Kirkwood to explore the summer months too. Great location, well stocked and maintained, and everything you would hope for in a rental. Front deck had great views, the den / kitchen is well suited for lounging around after a long day of skiing, and all the bedrooms / bathrooms are well appointed. In a perfect world I would prefer that the hot tub be outside but it won't stop us from coming here again in the future. Owner is super easy to work with and very informative, the cherry on top of a great weekend.
If you have selected Kirkwood as your ski destination, you're clearly someone who appreciates lots of fresh powder, bluebird days, and a special mountain town vibe. This house is the perfect place to bring all of that together. I stayed here at the end of February and not only was it a perfect Kirkwood weekend in terms of ski conditions, but the house was exactly as advertised and every bit as good as the other reviews suggest. It has all of the amenities that you need for a great ski trip: hot tub, fireplace, huge family room for hanging with friends, great kitchen to whip up a meal, lots of extras like towels, cooking gear, etc, and a fantastic homeowners ski shuttle that picked us up at the house and dropped us off right at the lifts. Plus there's a great TV and sound system that we put to good use while enjoying a few apres ski beverages at the end of the day. All said and done, you can't beat the location and the amenities available with this house and we'll definitely be back...hopefully before the end of the season.
I stayed here with friends at the end of February and it was fantastic! The house is perfectly maintained, impeccably clean, and has top of the line everything. Even better, it has the perfect location: in Kirkwood proper where there's a free shuttle that picks you up from the driveway on demand and drops you off (and picks you up) on the slopes, but far enough away from the traffic and noise of the main roads. After staying here, I can't imagine going back to driving to the parking lot, getting changed in the car and then lugging my gear to the lodge.
After a long day of skiing, my friends and I came back to the home and took advantage of the jacuzzi, wood burning fireplace and home theater system before falling asleep and doing it again the next day.
Jim, the owner is very attentive and helpful - he emailed us a guide to the house before we arrived that made finding and using everything incredibly easy, and he even suggested an alternative route to the house from San Francisco in light of challenging weather conditions.
I can't recommend this house (or Kirkwood) highly enough. If you're thinking about going skiing in the Lake Tahoe area, Kirkwood has the most annual snowfall, shortest lift lines and most diverse terrain. And if you're thinking about Kirkwood, this house has everything you'd want or need to turn a good ski vacation into a perfect one!
We stayed at this ski home in early February with our two children. Everything was perfect. The house is large, immaculately clean, well appointed, and very comfortable. The common areas are very light, open, and perfect for just hanging out and socializing after a full day of ski. The audio and video equipment is top notch. The master bedroom, upstairs, is quite roomy, private, with his and hers closets, a TV/DVD set, and a warm, carpeted bath area. Downstairs, there are two spacious bedrooms, a full bath with tub, and the very nice indoor jacuzzi area. We had no trouble getting to the mountain fast using the owners' shuttles (took us 5 to 10 min tops to commute from the house to the Timberlodge area). This is the perfect home away from home - especially because you don't have to own it to enjoy it!
This is a beautifully maintained, sparkling clean true vacation house. It has just about everything you need for a great trip. The products and amenities are quite luxurious. The kitchen is fabulous-- huge and wonderfully equipped with high qualilty appliances and cookware. My friends couldn't tear themselves away from the giant flatscreen with the surround sound (great DVD library) even though it made for some grumpy early mornings.
The house location is very convenient -- easy shuttle to the slopes, easy walk to crosscountry, nice quiet cul-de-sac.
The owner, Jim, is very helpful, responsive, and involved. It is easily apparent that a lot of care and thought have gone into this house. Really comfortable but really nice. Truly a great place to go with a group of friends or a whole family. Highly recommend. Cannot wait to go back.
Three of us reserved this home for a long weekend as a surprise Christmas gift for our husbands. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and couldn't have asked for nicer accommodations. It was very evident that the owners take pride in their home, and their on-line description and photos of the property really reflected all this home has to offer. This house has lots of windows and the views were amazing with all the snow and trees. The well-equipped kitchen was a joy to use, and there was plenty of room to spread out whether we were enjoying the entertainment center, relaxing in the indoor spa, or playing cards/games at the dining room table.
We appreciated the complete, easy-to-use information on how to work the entertainment system, spa, and other amenities. We were very pleased that the ski shuttle picked us up and dropped us off at the end of the driveway within 5 minutes of calling for the tram. It was great not having to drive and park in order to ski.
The owner was very accessible via email and phone, and answered any questions we had. This was truly a great, relaxing weekend and was a terrific time for all six of us to unwind before going back to our regular lives. Not only would we recommend this property to our friends, but we plan to make this an annual ski/get-away-from-it-all trip from now on.
