Guestbook comments from the manager

It was absolutely wonderful spending these couple of days in the Captain's Cottage. Everything was so comfortable! We slept in the king bed upstairs and didn't want to get up in the morning.

You have done a fabulous job with the house and it still feels like home.

We will carry the memories of this weekend for years to come. We went to Blackbeard for a hike & picnic. The beauty of that trip will also be in my soul for a long, long time.

Perfect vacation cottage for our first family vacation!

  • 5 of 5

I recently decided to take my wife and young children to the beach, and I needed a good home base while exploring the Georgia coast with my young family. My son is less than a year old and my daughter is two, and I knew this wouldn't be the kind of beach trip I was used to.

I wanted to avoid a cramped hotel, and I still wanted an affordable and safe place for my family to stay. I decided that a house/cottage rental would be appropriate. I found this cottage on VRBO, and contacted the owners who were very friendly and helpful. They had no problems with me bringing my babies down to the cottage, and they also informed me that a brand new A/C unit was being installed on my arrival date. I was a little hesitant about going to a rental on the coast with no A/C, but they assured me that it would be done by the time we arrived.

It's only about a 4-5 hour drive from north Atlanta, and we arrived at a beautiful, clean, and very cool air-conditioned cottage! The floor plan was very spacious and my little ones had a good time running around and circles and crawling on the floor! We all loved the shady screened in porch under the old oaks covered in Spanish moss.

We made daily trips down to Jekyll island on highway 17. It's a very scenic and peaceful drive up and down the coast, and after long days on the beach with the little ones- it was such a relief to have such a comfortable place to return to. The kitchen is massive, and we were able to have nice dinners together in the evenings.

I would recommend this cottage to anyone looking for some real rest and relaxation. Also, anyone looking for a nice getaway with the family, even with small children- this is the place to be. Very safe, very modern, and very comfortable. The property manager and the owners were super helpful throughout our stay. We will be back! No doubt. Thank you for helping us have a fantastic first family vacation!

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for choosing the Captain's Cottage for your first family vacation. Sounds like everyone had a great time. And, I'm happy to hear it was comfortable .... and cool, when you arrived. We look forward to your next visit and soon the children will be old enough for fishing, shrimping and crabbing along the bluff.

Miss milliebird,

Coming back to Captains Cottage was like coming home.As always, the key was under the mat. The calm slow pace of the Ga. coast folds you into the sultry warmth of the true south. Moss draped trees wrap around the cottage. All our needs were met as this is a well stocked, very clean home. The staff as usual were friendly and available and ready to help in any way.(they even mailed my cell phone I left) I have stayed at this cottage multiple times. Every time is always better than the last and would recommend it to my friends and family. This is the perfect central location on the Ga coast.Great food very close and great people! Already making plans for the next trip....

My Wedding Weekend

  • 1 of 5

POOR COMMUNICATION// NO AIR// NO SOLUTION//

If it could go wrong, It went horribly wrong.

Beautiful house, I’ve stayed here before several years ago. I was super excited to book it for my out of town guests flying in from Idaho and driving in from Asheville for my wedding. I slept here also the night before my wedding, sigh.

Initially there was poor communication with booking. Messaged someone on VRBO, was emailed by a different person and asked to send contact & billing information to ANOTHER person. I couldn’t find where they took the money out of my account (I was sure I had just looked over it). A week before the arrival date I grew weary and messaged the contacts for arrival information. I received it within two or three days I believe. Great.

We arrive to a HOT and muggy house. We turn the air on and head to my rehearsal and return to a HOT and muggy house at 12 am. Nothing much anyone can do about it at this point so I hopped in the shower to wet my hair and my fiancé sends a fan my way (only way I made it through the night). There were no screens in the loft where I slept. At 7am I call the property manager - super polite and says not to worry about a thing on my wedding day. They’ll have someone fix it right away. Phew! It sucked the first night but I was so happy my guests wouldn’t have to deal with it the next night!! …Until they did!

Apparently they needed an entire new unit. GREAT! Maybe they’ll call and let me know what the deal is or send multiple box fans by to get us (them) through the next night?!?! NOPE. Not a peep or a fan. My bridesmaid from Idaho had my phone all day and was also staying at this house. When they returned close to 12am, she contacted the property manager that it had still not been fixed. I was not a part of this conversation but apparently they had called me several times (Definitely not the case, I was called by MANY people that day and not one of them had anything to do with that house)

Excuse after excuse - there is no excuse. All else fails... bring your guests fans and lots of them!! Make sure there are screens - you do NOT want to be sticky and bitten up. Try to do SOMETHING to make your guests comfortable if you can't fix the problem immediately. My guest who called had to demand a refund rather than it be offered. Turned out I was never actually charged in the first place. Thanks, I guess.

I rented 5 houses that weekend - This is the ONLY one I had issues with from the get go.

Owner's Response: Jennifer M. is correct; her stay was not one of our shining moments of customer service. In the over seven years of renting the cottage, we have provided a comfortable, clean and relaxing cottage for our guests. Jennifer's visit fell short of the service we take pride in providing. And, for that, we are extremely sorry and disappointed. I spoke with her and two of her friends expressing our disappointment with the way things happened. Especially with it being her wedding. I will note that one statement is not true - "My guest who called had to demand a refund rather than it be offered." Late Saturday night I spoke with one of her friends, and she asked if they would receive some compensation or refund. I said absolutely. There would be no charge, and we would talk with Jennifer, who was the one on the rental agreement. She agreed. There was no forcing us to refund the money or persuasion to make us provide a refund. We gladly agreed and assured the friend that it would be taken care of without any problems or hesitation. We wish Jennifer all the best in this new chapter in her life, and we hope that she and her friends will have fond memories of their time supporting Jennifer during her wedding weekend. And, for our future guests, we want you to feel confident that we will provide a cottage up to your expectations and our standard of service. The air conditioner was repaired! A whole new HVAC system was required to fix the problem, and it has been fully installed and working well. We have also addressed the breakdown in communication between our staff. We welcome our future guests and assure them that we continue to hold high standards for our customer service and relationships with our guests.

Friends Get-Away

  • 5 of 5

Enjoyed a friends get-away at Shellman Bluff. Cottage is very nice, equipped and comfortable with spacious rooms. Our host, Doc Bill, was onsite and provided us with an informative tour of Sapelo Island. Had a fun and memorable experience visiting Sapelo Island and touring Savannah.

Girlfriends Getaway Vacation

  • 5 of 5

I am a career woman that needed to get away with 3 other girlfriends. This place is fantastic!!! It was clean, charming, well-equipped and very close to the water. Savannah and Sapelo Island are also very close so we had plenty to do. The owner, Doc Bill, stopped by to say hi and to ensure that we could take advantage of all the sights and great places to eat. Jerome, the manager, is wonderful. We will make this a yearly trip. I highly recommend this as a relaxing and fun place to spend some quality time.
