About DeAnne Black

We purchased this property eleven years ago, renaming it Black Knight Vineyards. Our last residence was in Pennsylvania. The entire family felt it was time to perhaps create something for the family. Our daughters (3) and I required that it be something that my husband was passionate about. Mitch being a a chemical engineer with an MBA, and a business turnaround specialist had many good opportunities to seek out. We had lived all over the world, even on a sailboat tasting excellent wine along the way. It seemed the obvious choice for our new business to be in wine since Mitch been a wine enthusiast for his entire life. We had a family meeting and agreed that we were all in for the adventure in Wine but with no snow. California here we come.

The first year was more work than anyone expected. With 60 acres of land, 25 acres of grapes, two houses, two huge barns and a couple small barns, we had more to do than we could get to. One of our top priorities was to reinvent the house on one of the secluded peaks. It was redesigned right from the beginning as a vacation rental.

We wanted this place to be a representation of our life. It is filled with furniture and art collected all over the U.S. and the World. It is so peaceful here that it just called out for a spa. We especially like the spa perched on the top of the hill overlooking the valley to the west. Comfort was also high on our list – We think you will agree that it has turned out great and is unique.

Why DeAnne Black chose Sonoma County

From the start we were interested in some type of vacation rental as part of the business. About half of the properties we considered had potential for a vacation rental. Our bigger decision was were to start with the wine business. It is a complex business and very capital intensive. We choose to start with grapes since great wine must start with great fruit.

Sonoma is one of the top wine regions in the world. It is also one of the most beautiful locations in the US. We are privileged to have one of the best views around and we can share this with you.

The bonus of this location is that while we have a peaceful, rural vineyard, we are very centrally located with easy access to Santa Rosa, Rohnert Park and ALL the wine areas.

It really is the best of all worlds.

What makes this house unique

As our guest you are welcome, and encouraged, to explore the vineyards. Walk, run, picnic or bike, it is a new vista on each of the three peaks on the property.

Many guest are looking forward to sampling the wine region and the wines of Sonoma a second to none. Our central location is excellent for multiple day trips in different directions, all easy to get to.

Napa is 35 mins away and San Francisco is 45 mins away and a direct route over the Golden Gate Bridge.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a wonderful time here - just wound up being one night. Perfect for two couples. Three of the four of us did the first Levi's Grandfondo in Santa Rosa. Needless to say, the cold pool, hot tub and sauna were all food for the bones and muscles! The view is amazing! We also enjoyed hearing the wind among the trees. A walk through the vineyard is a must. Another great view up above the Merlot & Pinot grapes. If you are lucky - Mitch will let you barrel taste his private stash! Yummy - We loved the Zin he had in a 1/4 barrel. We enjoyed talking with DeAnne and Mitch and hearing their story of how they got here - cheers to them for taking a risk we have all thought about.

We hope to return!

We made our visit an annual tradition!!!

  • 5 of 5

Our first visit to this vacation home was a great experience!!! The home has plenty of space and accommodations to all be together as a Family. With grocery stores within a short drive away we were able to buy food and cook a great breakfast every morning before we set out for our adventure of either wine tasting or walking through the vineyards and wildlife viewing right there on property! The Vacation home boasts a beautiful view over the hills and everyday we see new wildlife. From viewing cows grazing from the kitchen or deer, horses, turkeys and jack rabbits. There is plenty to see as you are secluded from all the noise and traffic of the city. The Jacuzzi is great during the day or at night and is perfectly situated so you can sit and relax while taking in the beautiful view. We were able to watch the sunset from the Jacuzzi during our most recent visit about a week ago. This is definitely the place to go either with kids or all adults. It makes for the perfect getaway and Napa/Sonoma Adventure.

VERY DISAPPOINTED BY OUR STAY!

  • 1 of 5

Our family rented this property over Thanksgiving. We were excited because the property looked beautiful, but what we experienced was the opposite. We arrived at the main property and had trouble finding the rental home (the instructions were not clear). We heard the homeowner saying to her husband, “these people are just driving around the property,” even though we had only been there for 5 minutes. This was a really poor way to be greeted; surely they must have been expecting us. From the moment we entered the house, it was a disgusting experience. It smelled like wet dogs/rodents and it was very obvious it hadn’t been cleaned. There was dust on everything, the tables had residue from previous guests, there were cobwebs/spiders in every room, stains on the carpet, and the floor was covered in hair, dust, etc. We additionally found 2 black widows in the main bedroom. We spent a good hour vacuuming cobwebs and still managed to miss some. We had to go buy floor cleaner and sweep/mop the entire house our first night there – what a way to start a relaxing vacation (NOT)! We swept up 2 dustpans full of debris. When we opened the refrigerator to put our groceries away, we noticed that there were no “farm fresh eggs” as had been advertised. We tried to use the BBQ, but it was horribly disgusting and frankly just a health hazard (old grease, debris, rat feces, etc.). They advertised having internet access, but we couldn’t find the WIFI password anywhere. We called/texted the owners and were finally told to take a bottle of the wine to make up for their lack of WIFI. If the internet was down, this should have been mentioned BEFORE we arrived. This type of neglect to detail is extremely unprofessional. One thing I also noticed was that the bedroom closets did not have doors on them. In our room there was stuff being stored in the closet that was unpleasant to look at and also took up closet space we could have been using. In all of the owner’s responses to poor reviews on VRBO, she makes it a point to always mention how her family is “busy with the grapes”. I am sorry, but that is not an excuse! If they can’t handle running multiple businesses at once (she mentioned they have 5 separate businesses), then they should hire a property manager. Whether or not their grapes are taken care of makes no difference to the people staying on the property. Guests are paying to have a nice experience and that should be a priority to the homeowners just as much as their grapes!!

Owner's Response: All reviews are taken with respect good or bad and appreciated. Every one of the concerns mention are being addressed. The guest house has been closed since Christmas for renovations and upgrades. It will be reopened in February with new furniture, flooring and fresh paint etc.

Lovely escape

  • 5 of 5

Staying in a vineyard is a very special thing to do when in wine country and Black Knight Vineyard's guest cottage is a lovely and peaceful place to do it. The home is well appointed and includes a great hot tub and a pool, the latter of which we were out of the season to use for our stay but would be great in the summer.

There was ample space for one or two small families. Main opportunity for improvement would be to provide a few more shelf stable items like olive oil / cooking spray so guests don't need to re-buy repeatedly some items they are used to seeing elsewhere. It looks like a large spice rack was added just prior to my stay so it seems that the owners are already taking steps towards including these staples.

A Good Year

  • 5 of 5

If you are a wine lover then you have watched the movie "A Good Year" several times. If you do not have the time or the money to visit a winery in France to appreciate the views and the experiences of a small family run winery then the house on the mountain top at black Knight winery is a perfect alternative. The views from the house are spectacular. During the day you see horses, goats, sheep and of course vines. At night you can see the stars in amazing quantities. Along with the show in the sky is an absolute silence. A perfect environment to relax and enjoy the wine that you purchased from the many nearby wineries that day. If you run short you also have the option of purchasing wine made by Black Knight from a display of bottles stocked at the house. If you need to add some variety to those relaxing evenings then the outdoor hot tub is an excellent spot for star gazing and viewing city lights miles away in the distance. If you have a group with various tastes there is still wifi and TV with a strong channel line up. You can also pop in a DVDs of "A Good Year" from the house's movie inventory.

Day trips within a reasonable commute include the city of San Francisco, several options to see the huge Redwoods, and a drive up the Pacific Coast Highway just to mention a few. And of course the endless number of large and small wineries within a small distance.

Where else can you stay and become actively involved in the winery process? I was fortunate to participate in and/or observe: punching down the grapes, de-stemming, bottle filling, corking and labeling. All while having one on one conversations with winery owners about any detail of the process that you want to know more about. Other than the disappointment of not meeting Russel Crowe and Marion Cotillard this was one of the most memorable vacation weeks ever for my wife and myself.

Thank You so much!

What a View

  • 5 of 5

What a cozy cottage with a beautiful view! Our hosts Deanne and Mitch provided a hands on tour of wine making. Their daughter Lexi hosted a one on one wine tasting . The kitchen has all the amenities one could ask for. The beds were comfy and cottage was clean. The hot tub in the evening was a relaxing place were we could sip our wine and enjoy the stars and valley view. Food stores and eateries are nearby. Wine country was at our doorsteps and exploring the many wineries was easy to do.

A Piece of Paradise

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from an awesome vacation in Sonoma County. Our stay in the Mountain Top Cottage @ Black Knight Vineyard was definitely a little piece of heaven. The views are breathtaking and change constantly from a beautiful sunset to the fog rolling in & out creating picturesque moments. The cozy cottage offers a great retreat after a day of exploring the many attractions of the Sonoma Valley.

Mitch & DeAnne were accommodating and invited on a tour of their wine making . Their daughter Lexi provided us with a private wine tasting and also lots of information and history of the property. I do wish we had devoted more of our visit on actually participating in their operation.
