About DeAnne Black

We purchased this property eleven years ago, renaming it Black Knight Vineyards. Our last residence was in Pennsylvania. The entire family felt it was time to perhaps create something for the family. Our daughters (3) and I required that it be something that my husband was passionate about. Mitch being a a chemical engineer with an MBA, and a business turnaround specialist had many good opportunities to seek out. We had lived all over the world, even on a sailboat tasting excellent wine along the way. It seemed the obvious choice for our new business to be in wine since Mitch been a wine enthusiast for his entire life. We had a family meeting and agreed that we were all in for the adventure in Wine but with no snow. California here we come.

The first year was more work than anyone expected. With 60 acres of land, 25 acres of grapes, two houses, two huge barns and a couple small barns, we had more to do than we could get to. One of our top priorities was to reinvent the house on one of the secluded peaks. It was redesigned right from the beginning as a vacation rental.

We wanted this place to be a representation of our life. It is filled with furniture and art collected all over the U.S. and the World. It is so peaceful here that it just called out for a spa. We especially like the spa perched on the top of the hill overlooking the valley to the west. Comfort was also high on our list – We think you will agree that it has turned out great and is unique.

Why DeAnne Black chose Santa Rosa

From the start we were interested in some type of vacation rental as part of the business. About half of the properties we considered had potential for a vacation rental. Our bigger decision was were to start with the wine business. It is a complex business and very capital intensive. We choose to start with grapes since great wine must start with great fruit.

Sonoma is one of the top wine regions in the world. It is also one of the most beautiful locations in the US. We are privileged to have one of the best views around and we can share this with you.

The bonus of this location is that while we have a peaceful, rural vineyard, we are very centrally located with easy access to Santa Rosa, Rohnert Park and ALL the wine areas.

It really is the best of all worlds.

What makes this house unique

As our guest you are welcome, and encouraged, to explore the vineyards. Walk, run, picnic or bike, it is a new vista on each of the three peaks on the property.

Many guest are looking forward to sampling the wine region and the wines of Sonoma a second to none. Our central location is excellent for multiple day trips in different directions, all easy to get to.

Napa is 35 mins away and San Francisco is 45 mins away and a direct route over the Golden Gate Bridge.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a wonderful time here - just wound up being one night. Perfect for two couples. Three of the four of us did the first Levi's Grandfondo in Santa Rosa. Needless to say, the cold pool, hot tub and sauna were all food for the bones and muscles! The view is amazing! We also enjoyed hearing the wind among the trees. A walk through the vineyard is a must. Another great view up above the Merlot & Pinot grapes. If you are lucky - Mitch will let you barrel taste his private stash! Yummy - We loved the Zin he had in a 1/4 barrel. We enjoyed talking with DeAnne and Mitch and hearing their story of how they got here - cheers to them for taking a risk we have all thought about.

We hope to return!

Black Knight Vineyards and the Black family are awesome!

  • 5 of 5

Was like staying with family friends. Quiet and comfy cottage on top of hill with views from chairs and hot tub were spectacular, and far surpassed any stay at area hotels. Personal wine tasting and walks through the vines lent to a memerable vacation experience that will not be forgotten. Thank you Black family!

We loved our return stay at Black Knight Vineyard. It is a very special place.

  • 5 of 5

The location is wonderful, high on a hill in a beautiful vineyard with idyllic views. We had the perfect weekend until the fires broke out and threatened all of wine country. We will be forever grateful to the Blacks for rousing us in the middle of the night and urging us to leave immediately. We got out safely and were relieved to learn a few days later that the Blacks and their property were also unharmed. We are saddened by the devastation the fires wrought and hope our favorite wine country area will recover and thrive in the near future.

Thanks again to Black Knight Vineyard owners!

Unforgettable! PLEASE, READ...

  • 5 of 5

I’ve been looking forward to writing this review, but it’s taken a while to figure out words to describe this place and our stay…

WORTH THE HYPE… My girlfriends and I found the perfect place to stay in wine country, cottage at Black Night Vineyards (BNV). Posted pictures, stunning; dog & tractor, warming; excellent reviews were selling point. During booking process, hostess, DeAnne, was helpful & hospitable, answering any questions and helped plan sights to see during stay. But, this place was so much more than we imagined.

WHAT A SETTING! We arrived late at night, winding up a dusty gravel drive that ascended forever. By morning, however, we quickly became aware of our surroundings; a setting no other! A mountain-top retreat with sweeping views onto Sonoma Valley, with rolling vineyards to one side and cattle grazing at hillside on the other. The trees and rock outcroppings on the property were out of a landscape painting. We spent our first morning taking pictures in cozy robes provided by our hosts, DeAnne and Mitch.

The cottage was clean, comfortable, decorated nicely, and well-appointed; very home-like. Every window had views of the countryside or vineyards beyond. Relaxing in the hot tub, whether in the morning’s fog or during sun set over the valley, was simply unforgettable!

THE VINEYARDS. During our visit, my girlfriends and I toured all around the region (Sonoma, Napa, San. Rosa…), all a short distance from our retreat. BUT, the highlight was spending a day on the property with Mitch at Black Knight Vineyards. Post cards came to life that day, but with an authentic and rural appeal I can’t explain. We drove thought the vineyards on the back of Mitch’s tractor (dog running alongside), stopping to learn about the uniqueness of his property and grape growing process, while tasting varietals along the way. We even got to press grapes and see the family’s wine-making process, all done by hand. Our tour ended in a rustic old barn built into the hillside, the “tasting room”. We sat amongst oak barrels, spoke of wine and life, while sipping the most delectable wine I’ve had. Sparkling, chardonnay and pinot was, particularly noteworthy.

The Black family and their vineyard, Black Knight, are the genuine article. Something, I’m so grateful to have experienced! It’s something I won’t forget for a very long time. And, although I live on a different coast, I can honestly say, I’ve found my home in wine country! I’ll be back again. Thank yo

Relaxing place with a beautiful view.

  • 5 of 5

This place was great. We had 7 adults and we fit nicely into this house. Slipping into the hot tub just as the sun was setting was amazing! This place feels secluded, yet you are only 5 miles from downtown Santa Rosa! All around this was a nice home base to hang out and enjoy the scenery! I would definitely stay again!
