What a CABIN!

  • 5 of 5

Hands down one of the best cabins I have stayed in yet. It is a real wood cabin from the ceiling to the floor, the décor and furnishings appeared new and updated. Our group of 13 had lots of room and were so impressed with the amount of space. Very open and views to die for, lots of bathrooms which was very important since there were so many of us.. The place was stocked with everything we needed and more for preparing meals and plenty of bath towels for our large group. The huge hot tub was a big hit and we roasted marshmallows almost every night in the fire pit. I can't think of one thing we didn't like about our stay. Hope to gather again at Watauga Lake in this absolutely awesome cabin!!

Serene location with a beautiful home to call my own, if only for a week

  • 5 of 5

Great home for a very quiet, serene get away. If you are looking for peace, quiet, boating, fishing and a beautiful place to stay, then this is the place. The hike downhill to the lake and then again the haul back up to the house was a great work-out, multiple times a day. The house was everything the 10 of us needed (6 adults and 4 teenagers) with 4 bedrooms and the loft. The recommendation for Fish Springs Marina for a boat rental was key and the marina was extra-friendly and knew exactly where we were staying.

The kitchen was well-equipped with a crock-pot, blender, griddle and many sizes and shapes of fry pans and pots. Having the 2 refrigerators was very nice for all the food and drinks. All the beds were very comfortable (but the temperature in the bedrooms with doors closed were a bit warm each night).

This location was a shot in the dark for a vacation week and we were NOT disappointed. The home was well-equipped for large group. Thank you for sharing your home.

Truly a Mountain retreat

  • 4 of 5

The views were incredible! We had the lake to look at all day and the stars at night. We were excited to try out the firepit, but after exploring all day and a few evening showers we were too tired and didn’t get to have one. We did try out some of your suggestions for activities and one of our favorite outings was our trip to Damascus and riding the Virginia Creeper Trail. We also tried out the Red Top canoe twice and each time we left it on the dock as instructed, but when we checked later it was back in the water. I think we would bring kayaks next time for comfort and ease of use. That metal canoe is heavy!!

The house itself was great. We really enjoyed having coffee in the mornings on the deck overlooking the lake. The pool table was also fun for the whole family, and I think my husband tried out the hot tub a few times!

Thanks for sharing your home with us!

Great place but difficult location

  • 3 of 5

The place matched its description and was well kept. It was well equipped offering canoe, life vests and paddles for use. Plenty of TVs and the views offered were great. We made use of the pool table. Used the hot tub once (too hot). Great fire pit. Wifi was sketchy all week and cell phone coverage equally sketchy

The biggest obstacle to this rental is the location. It is about 100 yards up the side of a rather steep large hill that will exhaust you just to walk up to it. Older people will not be able to do it. You can follow a road up most of the way and then hoof it up the front lawn to save some time. But it is not easy. A resident at the bottom of the hill said we could park at his place all week and drive up for $10 /day. I bet some people have paid it but I'm too cheap for that. The boat dock is also a 50 yard walk down the road but it is nice and the lake is awesome, huge and all to yourself. We were there midsummer and there seemed to be no one there.

Larry the local maintenance guy was awesome and super friendly helping us out with boat issues.

We went to 3 local falls, did some shopping and hiking ...all of which were great.

Downside is travel is difficult everywhere around the mountain country and time consuming especially if you are from the flat Midwest. It takes a long time to get anywhere.

Owner's Response: So glad you all enjoyed your stay. It's a large home that does offer a great view, pool table, outdoor fire pit & hot tub. You're right Watauga lake has not yet been discovered and there aren't a lot of people there. Great lake for skiers as the water is like glass. Larry the maintenance man is a great guy and glad he could help you folks out with your boat. The falls are gorgeous and something to not miss. Its about 30 mins to towns where you'll find restaurants, bars, even Walmart - for most of our guests that is close enough. Theres also restaurants on the lake. Closest Dry Hill General Store sells breakfast lunch and dinner for under $8 and is a 7 minute drive. As long as you follow our welcome package you'll know exactly where to go, how to get there and you won't spend time consuming rides in the country side unless you want to. Beautiful joy rides in about every direction. This cabin sits mid way up the mountain and is paved to your back door. It is a short walk down to the water where you have lake access, boat slip and canoe. Watauga lake is in the mountains and the terrain is steep. Its a great place for physically fit families. We offer lots of amenities at the cabin so that anyone who isn't able to do a lot of outdoor activities has some entertainment. Know too that you can drive down the driveway and drop anyone off at the dock to board a boat and go enjoy the lake. The short drive down would take less than 3 mins.

WE HAD AN AWESOME TIME!!!

  • 5 of 5

At first, i was a little disappointed because i was thinking the cabin was right on the water. It is not. It is up the hill from the water. It is however, an awesome place to stay and we had a great time. The cabin was spacious and very clean. There were seven of us, and we had plenty of room. It had everything we could have needed and more. We enjoyed the lake so very much. We canoed, kayaked and even jumped in the cold lake. We rented a pontoon boat and spent an entire day enjoying the mountain views from the lake. It is a short ride to Boone and Blowing Rock, NC and a short drive to get on the Blue Ridge Parkway. It is also close to some amazing hiking trails and beautiful water falls. We did a lot in a short amount of time. Thanks for sharing your place with us. We made some forever memories.

Owner's Response: So glad to hear that you enjoyed yourselves at Red Top Retreat. It is a very spacious place great for large groups or family to gather. Our housekeeping staff does a great job, so good to hear them complimented. Boat rentals are made easy at the local marinas and the best way to see Watauga lake. Boone, Blowing Rock, and several other neighbor towns are close by and great stops for family fun. As advertised it is a short walk down to the water where you have a boat slip & lake access. This place does sit hillside back up off the water a little bit giving you a better view of the lake and mountains and a bit more privacy. Come back anytime, you folks are always welcome.

Notes:
After renting cabins ourselves for years we knew the important factors and convenience, Comfort and Privacy were at the top of our list. The great room offers an open floor plan combining living area, dining room and kitchen. This allows everyone to be together whether cooking, watching TV & playing board games at the dining room table. Folks who are on Deck are just off the great room and just a yell away. The large six person hot tub is on deck too secluded on the side of the home overlooking the water and mtn range. Parking for RV/Boat/Trailer: You are able to bring and park trailers and boats at digisnated area* Lake View: with boat slip just a few mins walk. You have an absolutely gorgeous view of the lake and Cherokee National Forest * Mountain View: Cherokee National forest * Boat rentals at the Local marina's.
