The Moulin de la Viste is an old water mill built in 1776 and tastefully restored, with beamed high ceilings and a central patio with original mill features. Airy, light and cool in summer. Thick stone walls. Simple and comfortable furniture. Good beds. Whirlpool tub in main bathroom.

Fenced terraced garden facing south with mature trees, bushes and flowers, original mill troughs. No immediate neighbors, complete privacy in garden and salt-water pool, good for skinny-dipping. Shady terrace furnished for outdoor eating by the front door, right above a babbling brook. 2 Weber barbecues. Mill is outside an unspoiled village on a quiet lane amid olive trees and woods.

About Andrew Borowiec

I am a photographer based in New York City and Akron, Ohio. I was also a university professor for over thirty years.

Andrew Borowiec purchased this house in 1999

Why Andrew Borowiec chose Draguignan region

It was love at first sight. The Mill is ideally located with a shady terrace right on a lovely brook, well restored, simple but elegant and in good taste. There are no immediate neighbors but it is not isolated. At night, one can clearly see all the stars, a rare enough sight in our cities.

What makes this house unique

Perfect privacy and calm with a good-size garden.

This mill, built in 1776, is as old as the United States of America!

The village of Claviers is still unspoiled, unlike other Provencal villages which have been souped up with fancy boutiques and tourist attractions.

This old olive Mill is located on a small brook and surrounded by woods, olive groves, fields. The garden and pool are totally private. It is very peaceful and pretty. The Mill itself dates from 1776 and was tastefully restored about 30 years ago. The garden has terraces ( called "restanques" in Provençal) and is well planted with old Montpellier maple trees, flowering bushes and plants. There is always something blooming in any season. The entire property is fenced. Wildlife: boars, foxes, ducks, weasels, pheasants, etc. can come right up to the terrace in front of the house.

Other Activities: glider airport in Fayence

St. Tropez 45 minutes on a good day.

The Mediterranean at St. Maxime, about 45 minutes

A very good French teacher in Claviers

Golf: There are several golf courses in the area.

Peace & tranquility in a rural idyll

  • 5 of 5

Quiet & naturally shady, but with a well kept sunny swimming pool, La Viste has been sympathetically converted.

Space has not been compromised for utility,

For us the proximity of nature was all part of the experience - the climate of the Riviera with the benefits of privacy and elevation.

Many thanks & hope to return,

A & A.

A special place!

  • 5 of 5

We’ve been fortunate to stay at Moulin de la Viste on two occasions – for a couple of weeks in September 2010 and for the month of August 2013.

It is a secluded little oasis located on a quiet road with a babbling brook at the doorstep. With the consistently beautiful blue sky overhead it is a perfect place to relax and read by the saltwater pool which is a good size for swimming and very private.

The house itself is uniquely designed with a center courtyard that welcomes light into every room. The thick stonewalls keep the house comfortably cool with no need for an air conditioner or fan – even in the high heat of summer.

The owner, Tamara, is quite friendly and a pleasure to deal with as are her lovely team that care for the house and grounds. Tamara even found us a local to tutor us in French lessons during our last stay!

Moulin de la Viste is a short drive to three villages where you can shop, visit the weekly markets, enjoy a café or glass of rosé and a nice meal.

We would definitely recommend the Moulin for a couple looking for a quiet getaway holiday!

Beautiful historic property, very quiet & private

  • 5 of 5

This is not the usual cookie cutter vacation house, it's a beautiful old olive mill that has been converted into a very comfortable home with high ceilings, an enclosed patio like in a Roman villa, and a shaded terrace overlooking a river. The large garden has olive trees and lavender, rosemary, and other typical Provencal plants. There is also a pool that affords complete privacy.

The location is idyllic: tucked away at the bottom of a hill away from traffic but only a ten-minute drive from nearby villages Callas and Bargemon, or a fifteen-minute walk up the hill to Claviers village. It's extremely peaceful yet close to many attractions—a perfect base for day trips around the surrounding region.

The owner is extremely helpful and quick to answer any questions. We have recommended this house to friends and are planning to go back ourselves!

Excellent for private family or couples getaway!

  • 5 of 5

We're a family of 3 who spent a lovely two weeks at the mill in July/August 2009. A beautiful, historical treasure. Swimming and sunbathing in total privacy, grocery shops nearby. Large eat-in kitchen and salon for relaxing. Easy to take day trips by car to the neighboring villages in Var, as well as to St. Tropez, St. Maxime and Cap d'Antibes. Claviers is a beautiful city for walking. Owner very honest and responsive to needs of renters.

Beautiful place to stay

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely one week stay in this romantic renovated water mill dating from the 18th century. The place is very special, absolutely calm, in the middle of nature, with all facilities, well decorated, a stunning pool, music records, table games, and everything you need for a relaxing holiday with family. The care taker couple Alain and Annick are very sympathetic and organization of the stay through the owner is absolutely reliable and easy. Claviers is a beautiful medieval town, but there are many more places to visit, the Verdun Canyon, Lake St. Croix, Grasse, and of course the beaches of Cõte D'Azur. We would definitely rent the mill again!

Lovely stay in romantic renovated mill house

  • 5 of 5

We fully enjoyed our one week stay in this lovely romantic and extraordinary Moulin de la Viste near Claviers. The environment is one of absolute calm and natural beauty, with beautiful medieval villages nearby (and only 1 hour to the sea, where we spent some additional days), and the house is comfortable, fresh, well decorated and fully equipped, and has a collection of table games and records to enjoy with the whole family. The pool is stunning and great fun for kids and adults. The care taker couple Alain and Annick are very friendly and organization of the trip was very easy. We would love to come again!
