About the property

2 Bedrooms, 2 1/2 Baths, Pool, Outdoor Shower, Sleeps 4

Is this not the best down island view from St John? Coral Bay harbor nestles at your feet. Look up to see the pristine waters of Hurricane Hole and the Virgin Islands Coral Reef National Monument. Looking north, there is Sandy Key and the rolling Atlantic Ocean. Looking east, you see Sir Francis Drake Channel, framed by Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Ginger, Cooper, Peter and Norman Islands. To the south, past Flannagan Island, lies the tranquil Caribbean Sea.

You enter the delightful great room, finished in tropical hardwoods, Italian tile and Brazilian granite. It features a gourmet kitchen, beautifully appointed living areas and a powder room. Step out to the cantilevered deck to take in the panoramic view. Walk down to the lower level to enjoy the pool, sun deck and outdoor shower. On this level are two bedrooms, both air-conditioned with private baths. Exteriors are old world stucco and native stone. Interiors were professionally designed and finished by master craftsmen.

Guestbook comments from the owner

The view is fantastic -- to have the entire BVI, plus Coral Bay and the East End, stretched out beneath you is a vacation highlight in itself. Plus the house itself is so nicely done. We're genuinely sad to be leaving. I guess it is the ultimate complement for a rental house that we wish we were living in it. Thanks so much for a great trip to St. John.

Outstanding villa - amazing view - great hosts

  • 5 of 5

I had to pick April 2016 on this form because it only goes back one year. We have stayed at Lunazul twice - but in August 2013 and May 2015. I am beginning to plan a future vacation, and thinking about where to go, and realized that I have been very amiss in never writing a review for my prior stays at Lunazul. There's a good reason why there are 34 reviews and ALL of them are 5/5. Stan and Kathy are absolutely wonderful hosts, and this property was built by them and was a labor of love. All the pictures that you see are completely accurate, and it is a stunning view. On our first trip in August 2013 we arrived way after dark due to a major flight delay. It was hard to tell where we were due to overcast skies that night. When we woke up in the morning to that view, it was unbelievable. It just didn't look real - it was our first time on St John. We had zero problems on both our vacations - Stan was available always for questions and assistance. We cooked great meals and ate outside on the porch practically every day. The property is up on the side of Bordeaux Mtn, which must have been why we had no mosquito or other bug problems at all. It is quiet, serene, beautiful. It also gets frequent gentle breezes, and was always comfortable. Both our stays were in the off-season, and I was worried about the weather being too hot, but it was just fine both times due to villa location up high. The A/C in the two bedrooms worked fine. On my second visit in May 2015 I had a flat tire on the Jeep while leaving for one of our day beach trips, and had to turn around and limp back in a panic due to being far from Cruz Bay. Nail in the tire. Stan immediately came out with his tools and air pump and helped me change that heavy tire. All in all - and I know this well from both trips - they are a "class act" and you should not have any qualms whatsoever about staying at Lunazul. We are hoping to return for a third visit. I recommend it highly.

Owner's Response: Hi Tom - Thanks for your nice review. We remember your visits .. the first one when our friend checked you in after dark .. then the second one when you had a flat tire. Happily, that's an uncommon occurrence. Meanwhile, all is normal in Coral Bay. The goats have been dining elsewhere on the mountain recently, and we're waiting for our orchid trees to bloom ... then the flamboyant tree. We have a new king bed and window treatments in the coral bedroom. We would love to have you back at Lunazul. Warm regards from us, Kathy and Stan

Best view on the island!

  • 5 of 5

My family of 4, including 2 kids, ages 12 and 9, spent a week at Lunazul... and we are definitely missing that breathtaking view. We drove all over the island, to a different beach every day, and never once saw a view as beautiful as the view from Lunazul. It looks fabulous in the pictures, but it's even better in person.

From the first time I contacted him, Stan was extremely prompt at responding to calls or emails. He was also very helpful in answering questions or providing recommendations when asked. He is very accessible if you need him (we accidentally locked our keys in the bedroom). Stan also met us in Coral Bay on arrival, and led us to the villa in his car, followed by a tour of the villa.

The villa is perfectly located just a few minutes above Coral Bay, so it was very easy to drive down the mountain to restaurants and to the Dolphin Market. (By the way, if you download the app called island e-guide, Dolphin Market gives you a 15% discount every time you shop, when you show the app). We were happy we chose the Coral Bay side of the island, as it is much more peaceful than Cruz Bay. It's also only about a 15 min. drive to the north shore beaches, so it's easier to get to those beaches from Coral Bay vs. Cruz Bay.

The villa is beautifully landscaped, and the pictures don't do it justice. It looks even better in person. It was spotless on arrival as well. The bedrooms are downstairs and separate from each other with an exterior, locking door for each bedroom, which we knew in advance, but this was not an issue for us, since our children are older. Each bedroom has its own en suite bathroom. The beds are extremely comfortable and AC is available, but we never needed to turn it on because of the breezes at the villa's high elevation. We never had any issue with mosquitoes. The pool was heated to a comfortable temperature. It does get late afternoon shade, so if the day is breezy, it's best to swim earlier in the day, simply due to the air temperature (March for us, so this may be different in summer). The villa is stocked with beach chairs, beach towels, a cooler, a float and pool noodles, so no need to pack any of that. Laundry is conveniently located below the villa, so we packed light and did laundry twice. The driveway is paved and wide enough to turn around, so that you don't have to back out. There is an outside shower to wash off any sand from the beach.

We would love to come back again. Thanks, Stan and Kathy!

We were glad to hear that you enjoyed your stay at Lunazul, and I was particularly happy to hear that the girls saw turtles and other local wildlife during your visit. Stunning View & Nice Home Base Above Coral Bay

  • 5 of 5

We spent 11 nights enjoying Lunazul and found the property perfect for our family of 4 (kids 11 and 8).

Highlights:

1. The house, as you can see, has stunning views of Coral Bay and the entire East End of the island, with long range views of the BVI, too.

2. Despite having a great view, it only takes 5 minutes to get down the hill to "downtown" Coral Bay. The flip side of that: renters should know you should have a 4 wheel vehicle to stay at this property. This necessity will serve you well if you plan to explore the rest of the island.

3. The house is nicely equipped. We ate every breakfast and dinner in and went out for many lunches (or packed lunches for the beach). There are nice beach chairs, bags, and towels for your use. We did some laundry throughout the week so that we could pack light. The washer/dryer are conveniently located in the basement level of the house.

Note of caution or a positive upside, depending on your party: The bedrooms are on the bottom level, accessible via stairs outside the house. I wouldn't recommend this house for folks with toddlers or mobility issues. Our party had no problems with this and actually liked the separation of living space and bedrooms for purposes of some of our family sleeping in while others were awake.

The pool was just big enough for the kiddos, but given the time of year, it was chilly (or refreshing, if you are in need of a brisk wake-up!).

Owner's Response: Hi Lynn and Jonathan - Thank you for staying at Lunazul and for taking the time to write a nice review. We agree that a 4-wheel-drive vehicle is best for visiting many of the best out-of-the-way spots on St John. We're glad that you liked the pool, and yes it was a little cooler than normal for your visit. The solar heating system was hindered by a couple of weeks of rainy weather before you came, which is unusual for us. Happily, you had mostly sunny weather while you were here! Please tell the kids that we saw an octopus while snorkeling last week. I know that they would like to add one to their list of sea creatures on your next visit. Thanks again, Stan & Kathy

Perfection!

  • 5 of 5

We were blessed with a wonderful week on St. John and enjoyed an amazing stay at Lunazul. Pre-trip interactions with Stan were flawless, thorough, and with a quick response. Check-in was easy. The pictures from the porch do not do this place justice, just so much better in person! I do think it has the best views on island. We spent our mornings and evenings soaking in the view with full moons and rainbows, even got two sunset pink skies!

The house itself is immaculate and well maintained. Has all the amenities you could need for the week. The pool was warm enough for me to get in, which is rare, even when we stay on the south shore. We liked the outdoor shower for rinsing off before getting in the pool. The bedroom set up is perfect for two couples and the beds were very comfortable. Plenty of towels for the bath and the beach. I loved the clothesline for hanging the wet gear.

We had one very minor issue with our bath valve which was fixed immediately by Stan. Stan and Kathy were unobtrusive, but there if you needed them for anything and were a real joy to talk to. Thank you for providing such a wonderful place for us for the week! Our friends and us made wonderful memories and Lunazul was a big part of it.

Beautiful view

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I visited Lunazul for our anniversary this year. We loved the island of St John and this villa in particular. The view is spectacular, the villa is beautiful, and we really liked the Coral Bay side of the island. It is quiet and laid back, and it's a short drive to get just about anywhere on the island. We also enjoyed our almost daily cheeseburger at Skinny Legs and Sunday brunch at Miss Lucy's. Stan had great suggestions of places to snorkel, hikes, and restaurants, and it was nice to know Stan and Kathy were just down the hill if we needed anything. Hopefully we can make it back for another visit soon!

The Perfect Honeymoon Choice!

  • 5 of 5

Each time we book a vacation rental, we put a lot of effort into finding that 'perfect place'. It really paid off with Lunazul. It was very nice, clean, and the views from the decks are incredible. It is the perfect choice for Coral Bay; high above the bay looking out towards the BVIs and very convenient to get to beaches, snorkeling, groceries, restaurants and bars in Coral Bay.

The house is furnished nicely, and the kitchen has a gas range and everything you need to cook a gourmet meal (including a gas grill outside). Everything was very clean.

Our daily routine was to cook breakfast, enjoy the pool, go out and explore the island, then back to the pool for afternoon cocktails and then dinner. We were always happy to be returning to Lunazul to finish our days.

Stan and Kathy were great hosts. We had total privacy unless we needed something. The power went out one morning (as it sometimes does on the islands) and Stan had a generator going very quickly so we were not inconvenienced at all. Also, Kathy’s mango bread was delicious!

We loved our stay at Lunazul and will definitely recommend it to friends and family.

Thanks Stan and Kathy!

We think our location is second to none. When you drive up from Coral Bay, you take US route 108, which is paved all the way. In our neighborhood, Lunazul is at the 'end of the road,' and we enjoy excellent privacy. High above Coral Bay, the villa faces east and is designed to frame the views of Sir Francis Drake Channel and the BVI's. Built to capture the tradewinds, Lunazul is cool in many ways. While our friends on the west side of the island, will show you a beautiful sunset picture, they usually enjoy it from behind closed shades with the A/C on. Meanwhile, you will be sitting on our deck, in the shade of Bordeaux Mountain, watching the twilight advance over the Coral Reef National Monument. Be forewarned, our lenghty twilight can sometimes extend cocktail hour beyond the normal time.
