About the property

House, 4 Bedrooms, 3 Baths, (Sleeps 4-8)

Our executive-style mountain home features four bedrooms, with queen beds, and three bathrooms, each with double vanities and tub/shower combinations. The lake and mountain range views from the master bedroom and both decks are truly unbelievable, some of the best that Bear Paw offers.

The main floor level has solid oak hardwood floors, and soaring tongue and groove pine ceilings. This level features an open great room, a dining room, a stacked rock gas fireplace, a 32 inch LCD flat panel television with surround sound, a VCR/DVD combo, a fully-equipped kitchen with solid surface countertops and sink, raised panel oak kitchen cabinets, two bedrooms, and a full bath. This floor leads to two decks, one covered with a 6 foot cedar swing and one open. The view of the lake and mountains from both of these decks is fantastic!!

The upper level has a master suite with solid oak hardwood floors, a television, a DVD player and a separate sitting area that overlooks the great room below and the fantastic view of the lake and mountains through the wall of windows. This master bedroom also has a full bath.

The lower level has a bedroom, a living room with a television, a DVD player, a full bathroom, a full-size washer and dryer, and a deck, with a 5 foot swing. It offers views of the lake and mountains.

Our home is located in Bear Paw, which is the only development on gorgeous Lake Hiwassee in the mountains of southwestern North Carolina. Lake Hiwassee is only five to ten minutes walking distance from our home. Lake Hiwassee is an 18-mile long mountain lake that offers casual fishing, boating, and swimming. There is also a shared swimming pool (open from Memorial Day through Labor Day, a marina that rents boats, a tennis court, a basketball court, a child's playground, and a child's fishing pond. A secured entrance gate adds to the feeling of peace and serenity pervading Bear Paw.

About Carlos Gaskin

We are residents of Tallahassee, Florida, and are retired high-school teachers. 2016 marks our 47th wedding anniversary! We have two children who also live in Tallahassee and four grandchildren, two of whom live close to us. We enjoy visiting our rentals in Boston, MA , Nashville, TN, and in Bear Paw near Murphy, NC, but we also enjoy sharing the fun with you. We have many repeat renters who have become friends to us. We keep our rentals clean, well-furnished and updated for your enjoyment.

Carlos Gaskin purchased this house in 2000

Why Carlos Gaskin chose Murphy

We had vacationed in Bear Paw several times and enjoyed the area a great deal. It is in a gated community near Murphy, and has beautiful views. We liked the fact that there is an olympic-sized swimming pool, tennis court and basketball courts to provide entertainment. Our children, who are grown now but were young at the time we built our first house in Bear Paw, absolutely loved to go there. Since the area has rentals and permanent homes, we did not feel like we were tourists; we felt at home.

What makes this house unique

We like swimming and fishing on the lake as well as boating. The swimming pool and playground are nice for the little ones. It is such a peaceful place. If you want activities, there are plenty around, but if you want peace and quiet, Bear Paw is hard to beat.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We thoroughly enjoyed our week at your home in the mountains. We found your home to be as beautiful as the view. Thank you for allowing us to use your home and thank you for checking with us to be sure everything was satisfactory on our arrival. We had an awesome time at your home and the surrounding area. Helen Ga. was awesome being German it was especially nice to see such an awesome replica of an authenic Alpine Village. Even though we were a few weeks early for the fall colors everything else was great and we were not disappointed. Thank you again and we will probably be calling you again for more time there. We will certainly recommend your place to the doctors and nurses we work with.

Beautiful home, very clean, excellent view, responsive owners

  • 5 of 5

Our family thoroughly enjoyed our time here in July 2018. This is a great property with an excellent view in a community with several amenities. The home is set up nicely and well stocked with essentials. The house was very clean. The community pool is nice and the tennis court was just recently resurfaced.

The owners are very nice and responsive to any questions.

The lake is fantastic and I highly recommend renting a boat at the marina located in the community.

All in all we had a great week at this property.

Owner's Response: We are so glad you had a good vacation! I could sit forever and watch the clouds move over those mountains....and the beautiful birds. Can not tell you how many cups of coffee I have consumed right there. Hurry Back. Thanks for choosing to stay at our place! I hope you made some more wonderful memories to add to those good memories from your childhood visits.

Stunning views-great house

  • 4 of 5

The house was great for our family-even a ping pong table for the kids. Everything you need is there-dish soap, laundry sheets, baggies, blankets-even saw a pack and play. The view was amazing and relaxing. Our bed was comfortable. Lots of space for everyone.

My only dislikes were that it is a 25-30 minute drive to the grocery store (or anything) closest gas station was even 15-20 minutes. Also I made a false assumption that there would be a place in the neighborhood to swim in the lake-there is a pool, but nowhere we could find to access lake swimming. We asked the security guard who directed us to a park nearby (where the only lake access we could find was from other people’s campsites) or at the dam. We ended up swimming at the dam everyday, which was ok, but you have to walk down a steep hill and walk out on the rocks to get to the water-there is no “beach” area we could find as with some other lakes we have been to. Could be we just didn’t know where to go.

If you just want to hole up in a peaceful mountain house-this is perfect.

(Knives were very dull but I told the owner so that may get addressed)

Owner's Response: Thank you, Kate. There is plenty of swimming in the lake if you have a boat. We all go to the waterfall and swim. Our association’s swimming pool is Olympic-sized and well-kept. There are so many activities within Bear Paw. We enjoy the tennis and basketball courts, walking the beautiful area, fishing in the fish pond, renting a pontoon and going out on the water with a raft. I wish you had asked about swimming, and I could have told you about several fun places, easily accessible f of the marina. You missed a treat if you did not go on the lake! Outside Bear Paw, within an hour, there are so many wonderful tourist attractions. The grocery store is a trek away, but, we make one swoop in Murphy, eat at one of the great restaurants, get groceries, eat an ice cream at Sweet Tooth and head home. I, for sure, hope you got out and saw the beauty. We had not had a complaint about knives, but so glad you enjoyed the house!

The home was beautiful, clean, and well equipped with paper towels, kitchen utensils, and even body soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and shampoo, located in the game closet which in on you’re left when you walk in the door. It is on the top shelf. The owners are the best people I’ve come in contact with while renting. They are very kind and caring about the clients who rent their home. The location is beautiful and there is kayak and paddle board rental place located in the neighborhood for a fairly cheap price. Overall this place is simply amazing and the owners are so kind.
