We hand built this home from the ground up when we were young, salvaging 50 year old Coos Bay fir to build the floors, windows and doors. All the interior doors are original as is the the hardware. We planted every tree on the property and effectively gentrified the jungle, creating a serene tropical paradise to relax in and enjoy. We enjoy being creative with everything we do and believe that our life is our art.
Susan and Chris Gebb purchased this house in 1977
We chose to move to Huelo because of it's pristine environment, with clean air, pure water wells, and quiet surroundings. The rivers that run through this area flow all year round and provide recreation and contemplation for the community. The tropical climate allows the cultivation of orchids which flourish in the trees, and exotic flowers and foliage, which has provided a livelihood for our family for many years.
Our family has always had an interest in surfing and we are situated between 2 of the best surfing spots on the Island. Miles of country lanes provide scenic hiking and jogging. Quiet, starlit nights and the whispering trade winds make for blissful sleep. Low EMF environment contributes to the tranquility of the surroundings. Clean air, well water and quiet are the essence of the visitor experience.
We arrived on Maui in the early afternoon, and after a dreamt-about lunch at Paia Fish Market..we continued down Hana Highway in search of our home for the next ten days. Pulling off the main road, we were led down a meandering driveway, which built the anticipation as we found ourselves in a tunnel of dense foliage, and fern-covered walls on either side. Rounding the final turn we saw our grande abode! The home's driveway features one covered spot-which helps keep you dry while loading up for day-trips if its raining out, but has room for up to 4 cars if you have large group. The first thing you'll notice is the excellent wrap-around porch, which can be closed at the entrance to help keep young kiddos in if you've got them with you! We made time to sit outside and look out over the many well maintained gardens, perfectly curated by Susan over the years. The interior of the home in warm and grand, featuring some excellent architectural features, like reclaimed wood flooring and exposed beams running the length of the house. Chris is quite the craftsman, and his attention to detail can be seen throughout the home. The amenities were as promised, a large gas stove which we used often, and a washer and dryer. The kitchen is great to cook in, and there are plenty of utensils, pots and pans, bowls, plates etc... If you have the time..do your shopping in town before heading to the house..but not too much bulk at Costco because the fridge is a little small...luckily there's another one in the garage! The propane grill outside was suitable for our needs, was clean, and the tank was full. There is a full shower/bathroom downstairs, with a half bath upstairs. The master bedroom-a charmer with double doors opening to a private deck, and excellent natural lighting-features a very comfortable bed and it's own private full bath. Water pressure throughout the house is great, and gets as hot as you need it. With the home being on Solar power, we found no issue with any feature, but we were conscious of our electricty usage throughout our stay. The only downside was cel. phone reception and wireless was spotty at best..but we saw it as an opportunity to disconnect, and enjoy the company we were with. Stores are not "right around the corner", but Haiku Market is just up the road, and has everything you'll need about 20 minutes away. Overall our stay was wonderfully memorable, and our hosts; gracious! Highly recommended for those looking to check in, to check out!
Our stay in Maui was magical and a great part of it had to do with the fact that we stayed at the Windward B&B. The house is in great condition (clean & well maintained) and the landscaping is nothing short of looking like paradise. There were 7 of us in our party and we fit very comfortably in the entire house. Everything we needed was provided; toiletries, towels, coffee, tea, spices, cooking oils, and there were even some ice coolers and beach chairs for us to utilize during our days at the beach. The customer service Susan & Chris provided was SUPERB. They were very kind and shared valuable information with us regarding places to eat and areas to visit. There is no AC in the house but DO NOT WORRY, the AC is NOT necessary. The temperatures drop at night time and there is always a constant breeze which serves as nature's AC. There are plenty of screened windows and doors all around the house so it never felt stuffy. We stayed during the last week of June and it rained most days during the night and early morning which did not affect our daily plans and only made our mornings more fresh and crisp. I can go on and on about how lovely our stay was but in the essence of time, I will say this...Windward B&B by far exceeded our expectations and would definitely stay here again if we return to Maui!
A couple of weeks ago, my wife, myself, our four children, and her parents rented the entire house for five glorious days and nights. This B&B is the most unique and peaceful one we have ever stayed at. It is conveniently located near the mostly undiscovered town of Haiku, the small but bustling city of Paia, and the world famous Road to Hana. The Master bedroom offers a ton of space, privacy, and a great view of the gardens. The Ariel suite offers both garden and ocean views. The August suite, which my wife and I stayed in this time, offers a great ocean breeze as well as views of the tropical foliage and ocean. It is more than a B&B, its a home. The amazingly pleasant owners, Chris and Susan Gebb, raised their family in the home and you can feel the love that still permeates throughout. The Gebbs are full of good stories about their life in Maui, as well as suggestions for things to do and places to eat. However, they seem to have the skill to be there when you need them, but not around when you want privacy...amazing talent. If you are looking for true relaxation and tranquility, Windward Gardens is the place. You can stroll the amazing gardens or sit on the lanai with a cup of coffer or tea and look at the tropical gardens and ocean. I know I have said amazing about a million times but there is no other word that comes to mind to describe this indescribable place. We are definitely going to stay at Woodward Gardens again the next time we visit Maui.
We had an outstanding stay at this beautiful B & B! The house and property are absolutely stunning. Our room was large, immaculate and had a beautiful lanai with a gorgeous ocean view! The owners were very warm, welcoming and wonderful cooks! We really enjoyed our time and look forward to our next stay there!
The best part is the owners: they are so nice and attentive, they make you feel like family.
The pictures don't do justice, the house, the kitchen, furniture, sweeping balconies and the garden feel like a multi-million dollar villa in a tropical paradise. We feel very lucky and privileged to have found this place.
This was our first visit to Maui. Having coffee with the owners every morning and talking about planning the day, travelling tips, details only the locals would know was priceless. I feel we have easily seen twice as much than if we had relied only on our guidebooks and maps. There is so much more to staying here than just the bedroom and the facilities. It was hard to leave in the morning to explore Maui's treasures, the house itself was alone worth the trip.
There are not words to describe our stay...but I'll try! Chris and Susan were most generous hosts, mahalo. Their gorgeous home was the perfect fit for our family of 6, and the location was superb. We feel as though we found, yet another wonderful secret corner in Maui, with the lush grounds at Windward Garden. The trek to the local pools was awesome.
We can't get back soon enough!
Swimming in freshwater pools with waterfalls, hiking in rain forests, hiking at the top of Haleakala Crater, pristine beaches, incredible snorkeling, great restaurants, yoga nearby.
