Book this topnotch river front home for your escape. We think of everything to make your stay a pleasure and are always upgrading. Enjoy the new Weber propane BBQ grill - a full backup tank is always under the deck. Just one mile from Monte Rio, you will find yourself in the heart of good times. Enjoy the comfort and the amenities of home after you play all day, tour the sights or relax by the beautiful river. Pictures can't capture the stunning setting of this home and words fall short.

This area is the finest northern California has to offer. Everything you want is nearby and convenient: breathtaking coastal bluffs, beaches, wineries, distinctive restaurants, unique shops, spas, the river and awesome state parks. Come enjoy! It is an amazing getaway from the city. When available, we offer early check-in or late check-out upon request for no additional fee!

Because the house is thoughtfully designed, well equipped and full of character you will fall in love with this vacation home. Our guests all agree. The well-appointed kitchen has granite counters and all the spices, cookware, wine glasses and matching place settings you need. An open floor plan with beautiful wood floors, exposed wood beam ceilings and glass wall overlooking the river, create a delightful gathering spot.

We provide wireless DSL high speed internet and a house phone. We're close enough to the coast for nature’s moderating effect, yet inland enough to be out of the fog and cold winds when they arise. Our idyllic micro-climate provides moderate temperatures in both summer and winter.

Imagine yourself lounging on the redwood deck, soaking in the hot tub watching life float past on the river or reading a book next to the wood burning stove in the day-lit living room. From your home nestled amongst giant Redwoods on and overlooking the beautiful Russian River, you can meander down to your floating redwood dock & private river access, a favorite fishing spot for Otters, Osprey and Great Blue Herons among other wildlife.

The peaceful Russian River is clear, cool and inviting. A canoe, two kayaks and life-vests are provided for you to explore this natural wonderland. A gorgeous ten-minute drive along the Russian River towards the coast brings you to Jenner and River’s End. You will experience the best of California at the sightseeing attractions, charming towns and beautiful parks close to this ultimate location. In the summer the river is a popular swimming and festival spot for San Franciscans. In the winter the Pacific keeps the climate mild and is popular for whale watching.

This is California's premier wine country with many top vineyard tours in close proximity. You will want to move here once you visit. We'll provide a map of little-known, stunning scenic drives to the coast where you can walk the beaches & coastal bluffs. The landmark Sonoma Coast State Park and Goat Rock are at the mouth of the river. Here you can walk the beach and visit the sea lions that usually lounge where the Russian River meets the Pacific Ocean.

With two decks, outdoor fireplace and hot tub, the house is a great get-away for a couple, and can comfortably accommodate up to five couples. Families with children will enjoy the yard and private river access. The propane outdoor grill, quality cookware, spices, teas and condiments will make the chef in your group happy. The living room has stunning views of the river through the floor-to-ceiling windows. Certificate # 594N

About Chris McCook

I love to travel and moved to California from Philadelphia in 2001. This area has just about everything. There is still so much I haven't done here; it makes it hard to leave.

Chris McCook purchased this house in 2005

Why Chris McCook chose Monte Rio

I was amazed by the natural beauty here; the redwood trees, the coast, the river, the mountains, and the people.

What makes this house unique

I love hiking and mountain biking on the trails right out the front door or going for a canoe or kayak ride and swim on the river right outside the back door. Of course a fire or the hot tub is great in the evenings and barbecuing on the deck while watching the wildlife on the river is very relaxing.

A real jewel on the river

  • 5 of 5

This was my first time renting in Monte Rio and it couldn't have been better. Dragon's Lair is a well maintained/ appointed house that is ideal for entertaining and relaxing. Great care has been taken to make this stylish house a true vacation home. The decks, BBQ, hot tub and fire pit really add to the ambience. There are 4/5 bedrooms and lots of space to stretch out and enjoy the river scenery through the floor to ceiling windows. We are already talking about returning for an even longer stay.

The Dragons Lair was perfect for our weekend golf getaway!

  • 5 of 5

The house was clean, nice, and everything worked!!!! Minutes from the golf course and the beach its a great destination. The view of the river was nice and we enjoyed the outdoor fireplace while grilling and hanging out . We had 10 people that arrived at different times, parking wasn't an issue, and everybody had nice place to sleep. The owner Chris was very accommodating. We hope to get back during the summer months.

Amazing views, super comfortable, great for families

  • 5 of 5

We were super happy with our stay at Dragon's Lair. It was easy for the dogs to play outside and behave inside with all of the space, the views (rain or shine) were amazing, super kid friendly also which was awesome. Very comfortable memory foam style beds. Skylights everywhere. Grocery stores / restaurants are both 5 mins away in Monte Rio (go to the Rio Theater Cafe! so goood!!!!), 7 mins away in Duncan Mills, or 15 mins away in Guerneville (try the organic co-op next to Safeway!).

Northern California

Great space, especially for summer months

  • 4 of 5

A group of three families, all with small children, stayed here for a weekend in mid-November. We were overall very happy with the rental -- it was quiet, being right on the river was fantastic, having access to the kayaks and canoe was a lot of fun, the kitchen was pretty well stocked and there were plenty of towels etc. for everyone -- but there are a few things renters should know:

1) The downstairs is only accessible from the outside. You have to walk out of the house and down a few steps to get into the downstairs room. This isn't a big problem unless it's very cold and/or wet -- which it was while we were there.

2) Both king-sized beds are in the downstairs. It's unclear from the listing how the house is laid out, but basically there are three nice bedrooms up in the main part of the house, each with a queen-ish sized bed. Downstairs is like a rumpus room, except that there's a big king-sized bed in one half, then there's another king-sized bed 15 feet away, up some steps and behind a curtain. We had hoped to have two families each with a king in their room for kids to sleep in, but this layout didn't work out for that setup.

3) The downstairs is unheated. It's furnished, and there's carpet on the floor and some in the bathroom, but there is no central heating and no access to the wood-burning stove for the downstairs. There is a small space heater, but again -- if you're coming in the cold months, be prepared.

Overall we had a good time here and we adjusted to each of the above quirks, but we might have chosen a different place if we'd known about the setup.

Owner's Response: This review is reasonably accurate except a few things. Most importantly: Item 3. There were 3 working central heat supplies and a return register downstairs (now 4). I just double checked a damper and the airflow is good and fairly balanced. The likely problem Matt had is explained in detail in the instructions: The thermostat is upstairs and the Central Heat will not turn on if a fire is going which will heat the whole upstairs but leave the downstairs cool. If you turn the Central Heating unit "Fan" from Auto to ON and turn the ceiling fan on it will circulate the heat downstairs fairly well. Other item: The listing section, "Bedrooms" describes pretty clearly how it is laid out including the details Matt mentions and some he doesn't. To help you understand better, note the picture's labels. Starting from the king bed with the red checkered comforter; the remaining pictures are all of the downstairs bedroom and taken from about the same place. It actually includes a small 5th bedroom with french doors that i do not list because it can only be entered from the 4th bedroom. (UPDATE: Matt's review helped motivate me to connect a 4th supply in the downstairs bathroom which has balanced the central heat. Also added 2 big umbrellas! ) Please do call with any issues, I am sorry Matt didn't have the heat wanted downstairs. I probably could have explained right off how to fix it if he had taken a minute to call. So glad his group was over all happy!
