Villa Grande House Rental Photos and Description

River Front House w/ Dock, 3 Bedrooms + Loft & Daybed rm, 2 Baths,

Book this topnotch river front home for your escape. We think of everything to make your stay a pleasure and are always upgrading. Enjoy the new Weber propane BBQ grill - a full backup tank is always under the deck. Just one mile from Monte Rio, you will find yourself in the heart of good times. Enjoy the comfort and the amenities of home after you play all day, tour the sights or relax by the beautiful river. Pictures can't capture the stunning setting of this home and words fall short.

This area is the finest northern California has to offer. Everything you want is nearby and convenient: breathtaking coastal bluffs, beaches, wineries, distinctive restaurants, unique shops, spas, the river and awesome state parks. Come enjoy! It is an amazing getaway from the city. When available, we offer early check-in or late check-out upon request for no additional fee!

Because the house is thoughtfully designed, well equipped and full of character you will fall in love with this vacation home. Our guests all agree. The well-appointed kitchen has granite counters and all the spices, cookware, wine glasses and matching place settings you need. An open floor plan with beautiful wood floors, exposed wood beam ceilings and glass wall overlooking the river, create a delightful gathering spot.

We provide wireless DSL high speed internet and a house phone. We're close enough to the coast for nature’s moderating effect, yet inland enough to be out of the fog and cold winds when they arise. Our idyllic micro-climate provides moderate temperatures in both summer and winter.

Imagine yourself lounging on the redwood deck, soaking in the hot tub watching life float past on the river or reading a book next to the wood burning stove in the day-lit living room. From your home nestled amongst giant Redwoods on and overlooking the beautiful Russian River, you can meander down to your floating redwood dock & private river access, a favorite fishing spot for Otters, Osprey and Great Blue Herons among other wildlife.

The peaceful Russian River is clear, cool and inviting. A canoe, two kayaks and life-vests are provided for you to explore this natural wonderland. A gorgeous ten-minute drive along the Russian River towards the coast brings you to Jenner and River’s End. You will experience the best of California at the sightseeing attractions, charming towns and beautiful parks close to this ultimate location. In the summer the river is a popular swimming and festival spot for San Franciscans. In the winter the Pacific keeps the climate mild and is popular for whale watching.

This is California's premier wine country with many top vineyard tours in close proximity. You will want to move here once you visit. We'll provide a map of little-known, stunning scenic drives to the coast where you can walk the beaches & coastal bluffs. The landmark Sonoma Coast State Park and Goat Rock are at the mouth of the river. Here you can walk the beach and visit the sea lions that usually lounge where the Russian River meets the Pacific Ocean.

With two decks, outdoor fireplace and hot tub, the house is a great get-away for a couple, and can comfortably accommodate up to five couples. Families with children will enjoy the yard and private river access. The propane outdoor grill, quality cookware, spices, teas and condiments will make the chef in your group happy. The living room has stunning views of the river through the floor-to-ceiling windows. Certificate # 594N

About Chris McCook

I love to travel and moved to California from Philadelphia in 2001. This area has just about everything. There is still so much I haven't done here; it makes it hard to leave.

Chris McCook purchased this house in 2005

Why Chris McCook chose Monte Rio

I was amazed by the natural beauty here; the redwood trees, the coast, the river, the mountains, and the people.

What makes this house unique

I love hiking and mountain biking on the trails right out the front door or going for a canoe or kayak ride and swim on the river right outside the back door. Of course a fire or the hot tub is great in the evenings and barbecuing on the deck while watching the wildlife on the river is very relaxing.

Russian Roulette , Stay at your own risk!

Problems at this property were immediate. First, the password emailed to us with stay instructions did not work, Evidently the owner had replaced the lock and didnt update. This caused us considerable grief trying to enter. 2 calls to both emergency numbers went into voice mail.

I circumnavigated the property looking for another way in. To my surprise, the sliding door to the living room was open. I was able to let my wife and six other guests in.

That door was broken, would not close properly and could not be locked.

I received a call from the owner 15-20 minutes after we arrived. He informed me to try a hammer on the slider to fix and apologized for the miscommunication on password. This was the beginning of more things to come.

My dog made a mess of her water bowl. I cleaned the area around it and was disgusted by the dirt that had been accumulated on the paper towels. Clearly, these floors hadnt been mopped in quite some time.

Later we used the BBQ only to find the greasy remnants from the prior guests stay. As we cleaned after dinner, the dishwasher malfunctioned and we had to clean and try by hand. We took the garbage out only to find both refuse cans completely full.

I called Chris the owner the next day. A full 4 hours lapsed before a return call. He sent his house keeper over to clean grill and reset dishwasher but no attempt to fix sliding door, which remained inoperable during our entire stay.

The egress to the dock is difficult to navigate and dangerous for young children or seniors. The dock itself is wobbly, difficult to stand and is an additional danger.

Lastly,a sizeable portion of our security deposit was retained . How does one account for cleaning when no standard for cleanliness has been established?

Owner's Response: We do our best to keep our guests happy and respond as quickly as possible to any problems but we have little power over a guests well being or honesty. This guest did not report two large dogs they brought and the standard posted pet fee was retained from their deposit which prompted this hostility. When this guest arrived I actually heard the phone ring and called right back with the combo. I suppose a time warp could have stretched that minute into "10 or 15." Erik, did not want to pay the pet fee and thought because the trash cans were almost full, he could not figure out the dishwasher and had to call to gain entrance I was wrong to charge the standard pet fee. I politely disagreed and cited industry standards. When the dishwasher was installed a few years back a guest was confused and so I posted a note repeating the instructions on the washer bigger and clearer, since then no one had a problem with the dishwasher. When the cleaner went she confirmed it works like always. ( actually the best dishwasher I've ever owned, Maytag) Our trash is all stored in a white shed and we supply nice drawstring bags that can just go in the shed if the can is full. In addition the beautiful redwood dock is built with the best floats money can buy from Henderson Marine in Petaluma. that comment is a bit wobbly and does a nice job exposing the rest of the comments and the 1 star rating for what it is. I suggest you base your decision on the many honest reviews rather than an oddball. Oh by the way. I replaced one of the kayaks this year with a new better one and added a stand up paddle board ! Fun !

Clean and comfy!

  • 5 of 5

Upon arrival of our family of 4 the house was very clean and the kitchen was stocked with everything you could possibly need! Spectacular views of river and nature. Roomy enough for kids to have their own space, and enough watercraft for the whole family to enjoy on the river. Would love to stay again!

A real jewel on the river

  • 5 of 5

This was my first time renting in Monte Rio and it couldn't have been better. Dragon's Lair is a well maintained/ appointed house that is ideal for entertaining and relaxing. Great care has been taken to make this stylish house a true vacation home. The decks, BBQ, hot tub and fire pit really add to the ambience. There are 4/5 bedrooms and lots of space to stretch out and enjoy the river scenery through the floor to ceiling windows. We are already talking about returning for an even longer stay.

The Dragons Lair was perfect for our weekend golf getaway!

  • 5 of 5

The house was clean, nice, and everything worked!!!! Minutes from the golf course and the beach its a great destination. The view of the river was nice and we enjoyed the outdoor fireplace while grilling and hanging out . We had 10 people that arrived at different times, parking wasn't an issue, and everybody had nice place to sleep. The owner Chris was very accommodating. We hope to get back during the summer months.
