Overview

Northern Michigan Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Cottage sleeps 10-4 Bedrooms, 2 baths + queen sleeper sofa

Our Guest Cottage is located on the west arm of Walloon Lake situated between Petoskey and Boyne City, approximately 45 miles from the Mackinac Bridge. Nestled at the end of Zenith Heights Road on three acres of land amidst scenic mature forests, our property offers a picturesque, relaxing setting. No roads intersect the area between the cottage and the lakefront.

Walloon Lake, one of Michigan’s most beautiful and clean inland lakes, with its distinctive turquoise color, is over ten miles long and has Brown & Lake Trout, Walleye, Northern Pike, Bass, and Perch. The lake bottom is free of weeds and is sandy with a gradual slope from the end of the dock outward. Our cottages share 200’ of shore front; two tandem kayaks, two swimming rafts; and a gorgeous, large dock, offering plenty of room for you to enjoy the beautiful sunrises & your own boat. At the water’s edge a lounge deck with table and chairs, two camp fire pits, and a small sandy beach area for children awaits you, your family & friends.

The Guest Cottage is located on a gentle slope overlooking the trees & lake below. This 1600 square foot ranch style home has a walk out lower level that can accommodate up to 10 people. A spacious deck complete with table & chairs, along with gas & charcoal grills make for a perfect area to enjoy a dinner on a summer evening! Located next to the cottage is a play area containing a picnic table, swing set, and a Tiny Tikes merry-go-round.

The upper level of the Guest Cottage was renovated in 2015-enlarging the kitchen, living room, bathroom & exposing the original Douglass Fir floors! The upstairs has an open floor plan between the fully-equipped kitchen with breakfast bar, kitchen table with built in benches, and living room with comfortable swivel chairs & leather couch-with wainscoting throughout. The living room also has a TV & DVD. There are three bedrooms; two with queen-sized beds and the third with 2 twin beds-all bedrooms have ceiling fans. The wainscoting continues in the upstairs bathroom & it has a new 4' shower.

The lower level is accessed from the upstairs by a spiral staircase or from the outside. A large, open family room has Cedar wainscoting, ceiling fans, a queen-sized sleeper sofa, and two loveseats, TV & DVD, along with a sitting area to enjoy our many board games. A bedroom is located off of the family room & has a queen bed, ceiling fan and adjoining bathroom with a tub/shower. The laundry room with a full sized washer and dryer & wash tub is also located downstairs.

The cottage is non-smoking & has adjustable electric heat available in every room. Blankets, pillows, linens, and bath towels are furnished–please bring your own beach towels. No smoking, pets, firearms, fireworks, or additional guests living in campers are allowed to ensure a safe, comfortable environment for all. A local caretaker is on call and mid-week cleaning is also available for an additional cost.

If you are interested in booking the cottage, please feel free to contact us at the numbers below. In order to secure your date, a signed lease & deposit is required for rental. We welcome clean and respectful guests and look forward to making your next vacation a Walloon one!

About The Owner

My husband & I live in Colorado & the kids are grown, so we don't get to enjoy the cottage as often as we would like. So, we thought we would share this magical place with others allowing them to make Walloon a tradition & create fond memories that will last a lifetime.

The Owner purchased this cottage in 1967

Why The Owner chose Northern Michigan

My family lived in Ann Arbor, but my sister, mom & I would always spend our summers at my grandmother's cottage in Minnesota. My dad decided to buy the property on Walloon Lake so we could spend more time together. After an exhaustive search of other lakes, we found that none could hold a candle to beautiful Walloon. We were all enchanted by the beautiful Caribbean turquoise blue color of the lake and the big, beautiful Hemlocks, Beech, Maple & Birch trees on the property. The 200' of shoreline & 3 acres gave us lots of room to play, explore & relax. The property initially had 2 small Sears & Roebuck cabins on it-that we later joined & modified to create the guest cottage after we finished building the family cottage.

What makes this cottage unique

Some of our favorite things to do at the cottage are: watching the sunrise over the quiet, glassy lake; water skiing; swimming; kayaking; tubing; fishing; sailing; exploring the woods & looking for morels; laying on my back looking up through the tree limbs to the tree tops-marveling at their size; curling up with a good book in front of the fire; picking cherries at a nearby orchard; taking a nap on the porch; grilling an evening meal & enjoying it on the patio overlooking the lake; looking for satellites, falling stars & the northern lights on the dock; and our favorite of course...good conversation & drinks around the campfire with friends & family while enjoying s'mores :)

Review Submitted August 5, 2010 Date of Stay July 5, 2010

We spent the week of July 5 at the Moyers' properties--4 nights in the "Guest Cottage" and 3 nights in the "Family Cottage." Both were extremely clean, roomy and comfortable. (If we had to pick one over the other, it would probably be the "Family Cottage", as it's closer to the lake and a little more "cottagey" feeling. However, only one of the three BRs has a queen bed.) Walloon Lake was unbelievably clear, the water temperature was very comfortable, and the dock and rafts were terrific for swimming and sunning. We had a great time grilling one night, although the other nights we took advantage of the many wonderful restaurants in the area. Petoskey was only about 15 minutes away and Charlevoix about 20 minutes away. One of our favorite destinations was the Bay Harbor resort, about a 10 minute drive away with great views of Lake Michigan and a variety of reasonably-priced restaurants. We also enjoyed the Walloon Lake Inn for dinner one night, and we highly recommend Chandler's in Petoskey for lunch or dinner. We did a very enjoyable day trip to Mackinac Island (the ferry's about an hour's drive), and I golfed at one of the many spectacular courses within a half-hour's drive. (I played Little Traverse Bay, which I highly recommend.) On top of everything else, the Moyers' couldn't be warmer or more accommodating people. In short, we couldn't have been happier with our stay, and we definitely plan to return--hopefully for many years to come!

3rd Year in a Row

  • 5 of 5

This is our 3rd July in a row at the Guest Cottage and the 1st stay after the remodel. We have 5 to 6 teenagers (boys and girls) ranging from 15 to 22 and they all love it. With the clearness of the lake, the sand bottom, and seclusion of the cottage, it feels like a combo vacation - all the privacy of a mountain getaway combined with the fun in the sun of a beach stay. The dock is so relaxing, we get up early to go down and sit with our morning coffee and enjoy the peace and quiet. The setup of the dock and mooring buoys make it perfect for boats and jet skis. The lake is beautiful. Coming from Kentucky where most of the lakes are from flood control, the clearness of Walloon was stunning! The cottage is very comfortable. The kids like to gather in the basement to watch movies. The remodel enlarged the main bathroom, added kitchen counter space, and brightened all the rooms. The owners are fantastic and we actually had the opportunity to meet them in person this year! We all had a fabulous time sharing stories and watching the sunset. For folks who like to get out, there are three towns within 20 minutes - Petoskey, Charlevoix, and Boyne City. If you go make sure to check out Johan's for pasties! They even have one in Walloon Village. I highly recommend either house for a relaxing get away or a base for sightseeing or adventuring.

Fabulous Vacation

  • 5 of 5

Hands down, best owner I have ever worked with. Our three families rented both homes for July 4th week. Such an incredible lake and property. The dock system was the perfect system for all of our family's vast collection of water toys. Never have we had such a great way to anchor our boat and jet skis without worry. The landscaping and walkways were perfectly placed to maximize the natural sloping of these properties. The homes were well appointed with modern appliances and plumbing. Wonderful water pressure and comfortable beds. We loved the great touches - Like multiple hooks for towels in bathrooms, places to store water gear. Great fire pit at the shoreline. I just can't say enough wonderful things about this rental and it's owner. She goes above and beyond and she truly loves this property and it shows.

Great trip to Walloon

  • 5 of 5

Thanks for a great week at Walloon. The cottage was a very nice lake cottage and had all the amenities we had hoped for including a great location on the lake. We enjoyed morning coffee and evening camp fires on the shore every day. The cottage certainly had all the supplies we needed for a wonderful visit...Boyne City was a short drive for groceries and other supplies. All in all, we had a great week and would definitely rent this cottage again. My wife is already talking about 2 weeks next year. Thanks for sharing your home with us!

More family memories

  • 5 of 5

We had an enjoyable stay at the Guest Cottage, where it feels like you are staying in a tree fort. The cottage is a tight fit but the large deck provided ample space for our family to enjoy the environment. Aside from the cottage, the dock and fire pit areas on the shore were amazing. We spent most of our time on the dock, in the water and on the boats we borrowed from friends. Walloon Lake is incredible and this cottage and its location were fantastic. The cottage was neat and clean and furnished with the essentials. The owners were accommodating and quick to respond with any questions or issues. The property was well cared for and included well maintained wooden steps, seating areas and kayaks for our use. It wasn't a problem sharing the grounds with another family although next year we may rent both cottages since it was such a great experience this year.

Summer fun on Walloon

  • 4 of 5

My family and I stayed here for a week this past July. What a beautiful piece of property! We felt like we were staying in a tree house! The beautiful trees with the peek of the blue-green lake below, was breathtaking. The guest cottage was clean and comfortable. It definitely has a 'cottage' feel, but not in a bad way, by any means. We loved being so close to Petosky for any rainy days too. We will surely stay again!

Great place to have fun and relax

  • 5 of 5

Last summer we stayed at the property for the second time. It was the first time in the four bedroom cottage. We had an excellent stay. It is clean and comfortable. The lake front is perfect with a sandy bottom and a beautiful dock. The owners added kayaks last year which was a great addition. They are easy to deal with and very considerate. We went with our three children and our parents and everyone completely enoyed the stay in large part because of the beautiful setting. The wooden steps to the cottage are almost brand new and make the back and forth to the lake easy. There is also a great place to sit down by the lake.

Owner's Response: Each Cottage has it's own personality and I'm glad you've had the chance to enjoy both the Guest and Family Cottages now! Having them clean & comfortable is what I insist upon and I always love having respectful guests. The tandem kayaks are a lot of fun to go explore the lake or just paddle out to the rafts right in front of the Cottages. The shorefront landscaping turned out well & allows more places relax near the lake...whether it's having a picnic; lounging under the big, beautiful Hemlocks or having an evening campfire eating s'mores and savoring time spent with family & friends. I look forward to having you back again!
