Saumur Townhome Rental Photos and Description

Townhome, 3 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 3.5 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

This bijou townhouse is ideally located in the centre of the historic area of Saumur. It has been sympathetically renovated, highlighting the unique atmospheric features of a tuffeau home. All bathrooms have been newly installed with a contemporary style using the Asian-inspired 'wet rooms' or 'douche Italienne'. The kitchen is well appointed with new appliances including the retro-style Smeg refrigerator and range-style stove. The master suite has a walk-in wardrobe (closet) and large en-suite bathroom. All bedrooms are spacious and have dedicated bathrooms. The whole house is light and airy and features a beautiful walnut staircase, original fireplace and oak beams. There is a walled courtyard with garden furniture, ideal for eating or drinking al fresco.

Step outside the door of the garden and walk up to Place St Pierre for an apperitif, lunch or dinner from the array of cafes and bistros. Our local boulanger (bakery) is also here for that morning croissant. If you have forgotten any groceries, there is a local supermarket less than 5 minutes walk away or for a bigger shop, the hypermarket is less than 5 minutes drive away. Saumur also offers some unique boutiques and antique shops and there is always the food market every Saturday morning.

This townhouse is ideally located for exploring the area, whether it be on foot or by car. There are numerous chateaux within an hour's drive away as well as a plethora of vineyards, most of whom open their doors for wine tastings and special events. The town itself holds numerous events throughout the year and the Tourist Office is a great resource to all that is going on in the area.

Other activities include balloon rides, canoeing down the Loire River, cycle rides as well as the spectacular Cadre Noir (horse dressage), which Saumur is famous for. The area is perfect for a relaxing vacation or for keeping you busy - whatever you are in the mood for doing.

So relax in our lovely home! It is the perfect setting for an enjoyable vacation.

About Madeleine Douglas

My husband and I originate from England but have lived in various places throughout the World, namely, Zimbabwe, Singapore, Philadelphia and Shanghai. We have two children and love to spend our time as a family in interesting and relaxing locations. One of these close to our heart is the beautiful Loire Valley area and in particular, Saumur. We have been travelling to Saumur for nearly 20 years now and never tire of its friendly atmosphere and way of life. We continue to explore the area each year and as our children have got older, there are more and more things to discover. We hope you will enjoy our home which is so ideally situated and which we have lovingly renovated in a contemporary style blending old with new, which we feel enhances its charm. We hope you agree.

Why Madeleine Douglas chose Maine-et-Loire

We had our first holiday together as a couple in Saumur, so this charming town holds many special memories for us. We held our wedding reception in this area and our daughter was baptized here as well. But this is not the only reason why we love to return to Saumur and the surrounding area. It has the ability to be totally relaxing and a great place to ponder all the happenings of the year while enjoying good food, atmosphere and the spectacular wines of the region.

What makes this townhome unique

To be able to just walk to select your breakfast from the local boulangerie, or give the children that task! To be able to amble through the quaint cobbled streets which lends itself as our neighbourhood, or to walk to the market on a Saturday morning are just a number of pleasures you can enjoy from our doorstep. Our daughter loves to watch the cheval en calèche (horse-drawn carriage) that passes by our door in the summer. In the evening the 'clop' changes just at our doorway as they look forward to finishing for the day. We can go to Futuroscope, the zoo or the newly opened Terra Botanica and be back in time for dinner in the charming walled garden. The children can go to bed and we can enjoy a glass of wine while people watching from our balcony.

Fantastic Location!!!

  • 5 of 5

We loved our week in Saumur at the lovely Homeaway from home! We had everything we needed in a comfortable and convenient location. Just a few steps away from Place Saint Pierre where the Saturday market takes place as well as a bunch of great restaurants. We hardly ventured away from there for dinner. Thanks Madeleine for allowing us to experience this special place!

Four good friends in Saumur

  • 5 of 5

We were looking for a house to fit 2 Singles and 1 couple and guess what we found? The perfect place in the middle of the charming town of Saumur. The house was well equipped with comfortable beds , modern bathrooms and tastefully designed. The kitchen fully suited our needs as we are avid cooks. We loved the market and being able to pop up the road to one of the many Bistros for a coffee or a glass of wine. Shopping was an easy 5 minutes away by car. There were many places to visit, there was never a dull moment! We had lots of fun and truly enjoyed our stay.

Superb Holiday Stay in Saumur

  • 5 of 5

We could not have asked for a better holiday than the one we had at this superb home in the heart of Saumur. Everything was exactly as described on the site and the pictures highlight what really exists inside a typical French home. And what a charming home it is from the delightful French bedrooms and modern bathrooms, to the tall ceilings and original window casements with shutters. In addition, the kitchen was fully stocked with all you need to cook at home, but why bother when there is the sweetest courtyard to eat in with delicious foods from the Saturday market 2 streets away. It was easy to book and even easier to locate and enjoy. Thank you for a truly delightful holiday. Saumur and the surrounding area is not to be missed.

Great location

  • 5 of 5

We loved the apartment. Well equipped. Very spacious. A lot of stairs, but it gave you a bit of space so you didn't feel right on top of each other. Large living room and half bath on first floor. Kitchen , dining room and one bedroom with bath on second floor. Third floor had two bath and 2 bedrooms. Had cocktails in the evening on the enclosed patio. Walk to downtown, restaurants etc. Parking in under ground garage one blk away. Very reasonable rates. We sightseers took off in a different direction every day in the car. Way to much to see and do in just one week! Would love to go back.

Saumur family vacation

  • 5 of 5

What a wonderful place! The decor, the comfort, the amenities, the location, everything was perfect in Madeleine’s home. The charm of an historical house with all modern amenities and furniture. We, my partner and my two kids (10 and 14) enjoyed walking in the little town every morning to purchase «baguettes» and «croissants au chocolat» for breakfast. Some mornings, we would bring it back to the house and enjoy eating on the little patio at the entrance of her place. From the house, we would go to nearby towns to visit another castle, to find little historical treasures. We enjoyed the light show presented at Saumur’s Castle. The people of Saumur were very friendly and welcoming. Madeleine, although not present during our stay, was in touch with us before, during and after the trip making sure that everything was to our liking. We would recommand highly Madeleine’s home for everybody and we would certainly love to come back! Thank you Madeleine!

Nous recommandons fortement la maison de Madeleine! Merci!

charming house

  • 4 of 5

The house is a charming romantic place to spend time in the Loire. It has a lot of character and is very centrally placed in Saumur with its many good quality restaurants. Unfortunately due to its close proximity to the centre of town it could get very noisy at night. I would also like to point out that there are no wardrobes of chest of drawers in 2 of the bedrooms, which means that everyone has to use the walk in wardrobe in the master bedroom. We found it quite difficult to cook for the 4 of us, as there were only 2 saucepans, one being a large stock pot and the other a medium sized saucepan which was very pitted and in a poor state. That said we enjoyed our time in Saumur.

Owner's Response: First of all thank you for your valuable feedback. Our house is in the center of a vibrant town and for this luxury of being close to everything and the fact it is a city location, there will be some element of noise, which obviously we cannot do anything about. We have not had any complaints in the past with regards to this from other renters. Regarding the pots, there should have been more than two, we will be checking this before our next renters and will repair or replace any damaged or missing pots immediately. I apologise if this spoilt your stay in any way. Again, this is the first complaint of this nature since we do have a top quality six-burner stove and comprehensive stock of kitchenware as we do like to cook ourselves. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

Car: recommended

Wine-tasting area, Many Chateaux of the Loire within walking and driving distance. Cadre Noir (largest horse dressage in the area) on the same road. Fantastic location for a true French experience.
