This bijou townhouse is ideally located in the centre of the historic area of Saumur. It has been sympathetically renovated, highlighting the unique atmospheric features of a tuffeau home. All bathrooms have been newly installed with a contemporary style using the Asian-inspired 'wet rooms' or 'douche Italienne'. The kitchen is well appointed with new appliances including the retro-style Smeg refrigerator and range-style stove. The master suite has a walk-in wardrobe (closet) and large en-suite bathroom. All bedrooms are spacious and have dedicated bathrooms. The whole house is light and airy and features a beautiful walnut staircase, original fireplace and oak beams. There is a walled courtyard with garden furniture, ideal for eating or drinking al fresco.
Step outside the door of the garden and walk up to Place St Pierre for an apperitif, lunch or dinner from the array of cafes and bistros. Our local boulanger (bakery) is also here for that morning croissant. If you have forgotten any groceries, there is a local supermarket less than 5 minutes walk away or for a bigger shop, the hypermarket is less than 5 minutes drive away. Saumur also offers some unique boutiques and antique shops and there is always the food market every Saturday morning.
This townhouse is ideally located for exploring the area, whether it be on foot or by car. There are numerous chateaux within an hour's drive away as well as a plethora of vineyards, most of whom open their doors for wine tastings and special events. The town itself holds numerous events throughout the year and the Tourist Office is a great resource to all that is going on in the area.
Other activities include balloon rides, canoeing down the Loire River, cycle rides as well as the spectacular Cadre Noir (horse dressage), which Saumur is famous for. The area is perfect for a relaxing vacation or for keeping you busy - whatever you are in the mood for doing.
So relax in our lovely home! It is the perfect setting for an enjoyable vacation.

My husband and I originate from England but have lived in various places throughout the World, namely, Zimbabwe, Singapore, Philadelphia and Shanghai. We have two children and love to spend our time as a family in interesting and relaxing locations. One of these close to our heart is the beautiful Loire Valley area and in particular, Saumur. We have been travelling to Saumur for nearly 20 years now and never tire of its friendly atmosphere and way of life. We continue to explore the area each year and as our children have got older, there are more and more things to discover. We hope you will enjoy our home which is so ideally situated and which we have lovingly renovated in a contemporary style blending old with new, which we feel enhances its charm. We hope you agree.
Madeleine Douglas purchased this townhome in 2009
We had our first holiday together as a couple in Saumur, so this charming town holds many special memories for us. We held our wedding reception in this area and our daughter was baptized here as well. But this is not the only reason why we love to return to Saumur and the surrounding area. It has the ability to be totally relaxing and a great place to ponder all the happenings of the year while enjoying good food, atmosphere and the spectacular wines of the region.
To be able to just walk to select your breakfast from the local boulangerie, or give the children that task! To be able to amble through the quaint cobbled streets which lends itself as our neighbourhood, or to walk to the market on a Saturday morning are just a number of pleasures you can enjoy from our doorstep. Our daughter loves to watch the cheval en calèche (horse-drawn carriage) that passes by our door in the summer. In the evening the 'clop' changes just at our doorway as they look forward to finishing for the day. We can go to Futuroscope, the zoo or the newly opened Terra Botanica and be back in time for dinner in the charming walled garden. The children can go to bed and we can enjoy a glass of wine while people watching from our balcony.
After entering through the small courtyard overhung with a beautiful trumpet vine, you appreciate how the house fits in the historic surroundings. On three levels linked with an exceptional wooden staircase, we admired how stylish contemporary plumbing and appliances were used to enhance the high ceilings of 100 years ago.
Our party of five retirees was most comfortable here and made good use of the excellent food shopping within a five-minutes walk. Saturday morning at the Place St. Pierre was not to be missed. Bought super-fresh small Dover sole and rabbit thighs as well as delicious local melons.
Owner was most responsive and courteous in all communication. Gives you helpful advice and good lists of restaurants and nearby sights.
The location was great for us. Pick up fabulous pastry during the morning jog and finish the dinner wine without designated driver worries. Street noise was minimal beyond early morning street cleaning. House stayed surprisingly cool during several days of 90+ F temperatures. We had one morning without hot water and the owner was remarkably responsive in having the matter remedied. Plenty of hot water thereafter. Loved having the kitchen and patio to cook up meals from the market instead of just gawking at the produce. (My first attempt at quenelles was I thought pretty terrific.) The house is clean, adequately furnished and in good condition. Solid wifi. Closet space is ample on the top floor but otherwise limited. Overnight garage parking is very inexpensive and street parking was generally available. Would be happy to rent the property again; felt it was a reasonable value. Thank you Madeliene for making it ours for a week.
We loved our week in Saumur at the lovely Homeaway from home! We had everything we needed in a comfortable and convenient location. Just a few steps away from Place Saint Pierre where the Saturday market takes place as well as a bunch of great restaurants. We hardly ventured away from there for dinner. Thanks Madeleine for allowing us to experience this special place!
We were looking for a house to fit 2 Singles and 1 couple and guess what we found? The perfect place in the middle of the charming town of Saumur. The house was well equipped with comfortable beds , modern bathrooms and tastefully designed. The kitchen fully suited our needs as we are avid cooks. We loved the market and being able to pop up the road to one of the many Bistros for a coffee or a glass of wine. Shopping was an easy 5 minutes away by car. There were many places to visit, there was never a dull moment! We had lots of fun and truly enjoyed our stay.
We could not have asked for a better holiday than the one we had at this superb home in the heart of Saumur. Everything was exactly as described on the site and the pictures highlight what really exists inside a typical French home. And what a charming home it is from the delightful French bedrooms and modern bathrooms, to the tall ceilings and original window casements with shutters. In addition, the kitchen was fully stocked with all you need to cook at home, but why bother when there is the sweetest courtyard to eat in with delicious foods from the Saturday market 2 streets away. It was easy to book and even easier to locate and enjoy. Thank you for a truly delightful holiday. Saumur and the surrounding area is not to be missed.
We loved the apartment. Well equipped. Very spacious. A lot of stairs, but it gave you a bit of space so you didn't feel right on top of each other. Large living room and half bath on first floor. Kitchen , dining room and one bedroom with bath on second floor. Third floor had two bath and 2 bedrooms. Had cocktails in the evening on the enclosed patio. Walk to downtown, restaurants etc. Parking in under ground garage one blk away. Very reasonable rates. We sightseers took off in a different direction every day in the car. Way to much to see and do in just one week! Would love to go back.
Wine-tasting area, Many Chateaux of the Loire within walking and driving distance. Cadre Noir (largest horse dressage in the area) on the same road. Fantastic location for a true French experience.
