Only 90 Minutes from Chicago! Relaxing, Romantic and Fun.
In New England, many families own what they refer to as a 'camp'. A retreat from whatever east coast drudgery is foisted upon them during the work week. Having grown up in Maine, the tradition was deeply rooted in my understanding of adulthood. After years of searching, I finally found a spot less than 2 hours from my transplant home in Chicago. The place we now call 'the camp!'.
Wendy purchased this cottage in 2008
We chose the Buchanan cottage for it's quaint New England feel. Cedar shakes, a big screen porch and short skip to the warm swimming lake. The big back yard for games, green lawn and dirt roads, make it feel like a true New England lake cottage. We added the little log cabin studio in back, to give my teen and family kids a 'camp' to call their own. Something I always wanted as a child.
Peace and quiet. Nature walks. Long bike trails. Large open fire pit. Warm lake swimming. Association beach. Canoeing.
Nearby we have Horseback Riding. Golf. Wine Tastings, Breweries Tours and more...
Year-round sports including Cross Country and Downhill Skiing, Ice skating within easy travel distance. The cozy fireplace makes the camp a perfect place for a summer or winter getaway.
Stayed at this sweet little cottage with 3 teenagers over spring break. It rained for much of the visit, but that did not bother them one bit. They took full advantage of the DVD collection (all 3 Spiderman movies!), turned on the heater and hung out in the private studio cottage in the back yard with their game system, played with fun lasertag game from the garage, played basketball in the driveway and biked around the lake in the mud.
I snagged a great book from the shelf, took a trip for wine tasting and binge-watched an entire season of the Sopranos on DVD. Best spring break in recent memory. Will visit again for sure!
We rented the cottage this summer for a nearby family wedding. Wendy, the owner, was extremely accommodating and has ensured that her guests have all they need for a comfortable stay; games, Netflix, well kept yard with BBQ, in-house laundry, well-stocked kitchen, garage stocked with sporting equipment - the list goes on & on! There was so much more available yet we didn't have time to take advantage of it all. The cottage was cozy & clean and we especially loved the screened in porch. Wendy pays attention details to ensure her guests have a pleasant stay. We hope to stay again soon!
We really enjoyed our week at this cottage. The owner, Wendy, was great! The area is very rural but quaint and charming. There are many wineries within 30 minutes that were very fun to explore. We had a lot of fun on Clear Lake. It’s only about 10 minutes to drive around the lake to Fuller’s Campground where there is a larger beach and swimming area that my kids preferred. We also rented a pontoon boat for a few hours for a reasonable price at the campground (they have good ice cream too).
We went to the beach at Warren Dunes several times – about 30 minutes away. We also visited the town of St. Joseph’s multiple times which was about 45 minutes – very cute beach town.
We loved the screened in porch – my 11 year old son even slept out here a few nights. The Weber grill was great and very easy to use. The TVs all have Netflix – which my kids loved. The firepit in the back was a lot of fun too. The stars at night are absolutely amazing here. The cottage in the back for the kids was really cute. It was really great being able to bring our dog – she had a blast! Do make sure you bring a lot of bug spray! We will definitely be visiting again.
The house was everything stated in the description and more. The home was well laid out, comfy and well stocked with games, videos and books. No need to bring entertainment or go out in search of it. The large yard was a great plus - not only for our dog but for being able to just sit and enjoy nature. We will definitely revisit this rental. The owner was very easy to work with, everything was clean and in working order. Many times I have to try and figure out how to make a rental place work for our stay - this house was stress free - we just walked in and started enjoying our weekend.
(And- Clear Lake is a great vacation spot! Not sure why in the past I always was seeking out Lake Michigan as "the" lake to go to & the people in Buchanan were so friendly!)
This is our second time staying at this vrbo near Buchanan. We have used it as a temporary home while considering the area for retirement. It has perfectly suited our needs - quiet, comfortable, clean, attractively furnished, and central to everything we wanted to explore. Our dog learned how to use the doggie-door and loves it and the enclosed yard area. We enjoy the large yard, fire pit, and bird-watching from the sun porch. The owner has been perfectly responsive and welcoming and has made every attempt to provide any info we have needed. She even had a landline installed when our Verizon service did not work here (but the signal is fine in Buchanan). Walking country roads and being between the Lake Michigan beaches and the offerings of each small town has been a blessing. Booking, check-in, communication, and deposit refund have been easy and timely. Thank you, Wendy, for making us feel very much at home!
After searching extensively, we decided to book this property for our trip to the Notre Dame vs Oklahoma game.
This property was much better than staying in a chain hotel along a busy highway, and we were just twenty minutes or so away from the hustle and bustle of South Bend (not complicated to get to/from either).
The location is rural yet minutes away from Buchanon which had a supermarket and a few places to eat.
Obviously it is near a Lake, and you drive down rural roads past cornfields to get here.
House is modern and equipped well.
As other posters have noted the 3 season porch is really wonderful.
The charcoal grill with electric ignition was another great plus.
Please try and go to Warren Dunes state park less than a half hour to your west to see Lake Michigan while you are here, it was beautiful.
Owner was very easy to work with answering any questions we had.
We had a wonderful stay at this property after a long, demanding week working a conference...it was exactly the respite we needed. The location of the cottage was great for enjoying all that the area has to offer. We did a lot of grilling outside (the screened in porch was awesome one of our favorite features), enjoying bonfires in the evening, and walking/biking the area roads. In addition, we also partook of some of the great local restaurants like Wheatberry, Gustavson (in Buchannan...their pizza is spectacular) and Tabor Hill. We spent some time in nearby Three Oaks (Journeyman Distillery!), Sawyer (Fitzgerald's Restaurant and Greenbush Brewery are excellent) and at Warren Dunes State Park (one of the best beaches in the world). We love local wine tasting, and the cabin was a perfect base to hit the entire Southwest Michigan Wine Trail. We also spent a day down at the Fernwood Botanical Garden (a great day trip). Our only regret was that we didn't spend more time enjoying the lake just down the road!
The cottage itself was well maintained and matched the description on the listing. It is very private and sits on a comfortable lot just a short walk from the lake. We got an email from the owner just before arriving informing us of some updates and things that had changed that was very helpful and make our stay even more pleasurable. Having a laundry machine on site was also very helpful because we did a lot of hiking, biking, walking and beaching. We also got a chance to meet the housekeeper and the grounds staff on our way out and they were very pleasurable and kind as well.
Overall we were very pleased with the cabin, the location, and the way the listing described the site. This place would be GREAT for families with kids, small groups of friends, and folks looking to travel with pets. We highly recommend it.
