About John Hikade

John and Beth Hikade moved to Blue Hill in the 1970's. They opened the award winning Fire Pond restaurant at that time and stayed in the restaurant business until the early 80's when they started their family. John then turned his focus towards carpentry and became a well known restorer of beautiful the old homes that are so prevalent in the Blue Hill area- their current restaurant is perhaps his greatest masterpiece yet. When their children were older John and Beth decided to start a new restaurant called Arborvine, which in its 13 years has won many awards, and gained the same stellar reputation that the Fire Pond had all throughout New England.

John Hikade purchased this apartment in 1998

Why John Hikade chose Downeast and Acadia

When John and Beth purchased the building next door to the restaurant they knew they had their work cut out for them. With John's amazing carpentry skills and help from his 2 sons, the simple old doctors office next door was turned into a beautiful office space which is home to a local graphic design company (Borealis Press) and a gorgeous luxury apartment located in the center of Historic Blue Hill Village. Renters have found Blue Hill to have everything they are looking for from hiking, to dining and shopping, all right on the amazing Downeast Maine Coast.

What makes this apartment unique

During the summer months you have the convenience of 2 restaurants just across the white fence- The Arborvine with its award winning fine dining, or the more casual Deep Water BrewPub with Craft Beers, outside seating and a Pub style menu. There are fantastic farmer's markets held several times a week in town, plus wonderful local events like street dances with the local Steel Band, plays by the community theater companies, fairs, festivals, and of course the coast of Maine just waiting to be explored.

The cooler months bring a relaxed slower pace to the community. See Acadia national Park on skis, dine and shop. Many of the local shops and restaurants are still open, but you can also stay in and cook and curl up with a good book in front of the fire and watch the snow fly!

An awesome find!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I were so lucky to find the Apartment at Arborvine for our trip to Maine. The apartment was beautiful, clean and well equipped, and exactly as pictured. The property was gorgeous; grapevines, gardens and a small pond made it feel like home. Having such a perfect spot to come home to after a long day of activities was wonderful. It was quiet and private, even when there were people visiting the restaurant across the property.

We loved visiting the brewery at the end of the day. The food was amazing at both the brewery and the Arborvine. Tim at the Arborvine went above and beyond to accommodate my many food allergies so I could enjoy an wonderful meal for my birthday!

The apartment is very conveniently located in the heart of Blue Hill, Maine. It is within walking distance to shopping, restaurants, and the Blue Hill Harbor. Blue Hill is a wonderful Maine town; quaint and friendly. We spent a majority of our time hiking and kayaking around the Blue Hill area and only left shortly to visit Bar Harbor and Acadia Park. We could have spent our entire vacation in Blue Hill and would not have missed the hustle and bustle of Bar Harbor!

The Hikades and all of the staff at Arborvine were great. Everyone we encountered gave us suggestions on where to go and what to do, and we were not disappointed! It felt like we were old friends just coming to stay for a spell. This was by far one of the best vacations we have ever had and we will definitely return to the Arborvine!

Adorable and comfortable

  • 5 of 5

For two people the Arborvine apartment is just what we wanted: extremely comfortable, surrounded by woods and easy driving distance to both the seashore towns and the Acadia National Forest. It's location in a separate building across from two restaurants had me worried about noise, but it was quiet and private. The building is shared by a business downstairs, but we hardly knew they were there. A little balcony provides a nice place to eat breakfast or relax in the open air. The bathroom is at the bottom of a flight of stairs, which may pose an inconvenience for some people, but we had no complaints. A charming little getaway!

Adorable apartment in heart of downtown Blue Hill

  • 5 of 5

Great apartment! It has everything you could want and then some. I would choose this over a hotel day! It was clean, convenient, and best of all it is just a walk across the parking area to their brewery and restaurant, Arborvine & Deepwater Brewing Co. Everything you could want in town is also just a short walk or drive.

There were many small factors that I appreciated such as the bath towels being nice, large and quality, not just some hotel towels. There were even beach towels in the cupboard had it been warm enough to wander down to the beach to use. The bedding was comfortable and everything in the apartment was clean. The details have been well thought out and makes you really feel at home! Although we didn't use the kitchen, it was nice to know it was there if we had wanted to stay in and cook up a nice meal.

If you are traveling to Blue Hill, even for just a night, this is the place to stay. I hope we can make it back this summer and stay longer.

My husband even managed to lock us out on Easter evening, and John got back to me within minutes to help me get in. Thanks again!!

Very convenient and comfortable

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at Arborvine. The apartment was lovely, well equipped and very comfortable. I did not find the downstairs location for the bathroom to be a problem. I loved the location and proximity to town. I would highly recommend it

Secret Gem

  • 5 of 5

Having visited Blue Hill Maine many, many times I never knew that the Arborvine Apartment was there. When I inquired into a local hotel, off season, and found that they were full, they suggested that I look into the Arborvine Apartment. It exceeded my expectations. Not only was it centrally located, extremely affordable, meticulously clean, beautifully decorated, next door to a delicious and best customer service restaurant, it was serviced through Home Away. I have used Home Away before when traveling abroad but shame on me for not thinking to look into this service locally. John, the proprietor was wonderful and quick to respond to our inquiry.
