Spanish Mission Style Home with Pool - Away from Coastal Fog

Bedrooms 4
Property type house
Minimum Stay 2 - 7 nights

About the property

House, 4 Bedrooms, 3 Baths, (Sleeps 8)

Ideal spot to watch the August 21 solar eclipse.

This is a peaceful Spanish Mission style home on a spectacular site with a large, private pool in the foothills of Santa Barbara. It has magnificent views, wonderful sunsets, and a tropical landscape that gives an exotic resort feeling.

The property is at the end of a private road with no through traffic.

This is a family home of English design professionals. With its tree house, pool and swings it is an ideal place for families.

However because of the residential neighborhood the property it is not suitable for loud groups wanting to party.

Mission Santa Barbara is only one and one-half miles away. It is less than ten minutes from downtown Santa Barbara which is a very sophisticated town in the Spanish Colonial style; a beautiful town to walk in. There are theaters, many cinemas, and the type of restaurants and shops one usually finds only in large international cities.

This artistic house is light, open, and comfortable. The combined kitchen/dining room is large, 26 feet x 16 feet. The adjacent poolside dining area is an ideal place to watch the sunsets or enjoy lunch sitting in swimsuits in the warm sunshine. The large living room, 20 feet x 25 feet, has a wood burning fireplace and wonderful mountain views. There is a home office and wireless internet. No smoking and no pets, please.

The Santa Barbara Botanic Gardens are within walking distance, as are many hiking trails.

Keywords: Private, tropical, views, large pool.

We had such a relaxing, restful time. Your home is amazing. We loved it and Patricia was thrilled with everything especially after she found the knife sharpener!

a uniquely beautiful place!

  • 4 of 5

I stayed at this beautiful mission-like home with my 4 little kids and my parents. The location is stunningly gorgeous- tucked in the SB hills with a distant ocean view. The pool is located in the perfect spot to take in the scenery. A pool gate was available for the kids which helped my husband sleep at night (though it did cut down on the scenic view). The home itself is a wonder. Meticulously designed and decorated by the couples eclectic world adventures. There are treasures, statues and artifacts tucked all around. While the decor and fixtures are dated, it somehow comes together perfectly with a chic throwback vibe. Despite the innumerable relics and tapestries, the place was very clean and well maintained. No dust or creepy smells if you know what I mean. The couple who own the property stay at an adjacent home less than 20 yards away so they are available if needed. The grounds surrounding the home are a wonder too- palm trees and succulents abound in a meticulous garden. There is an actual treehouse, wooden swings and chickens roaming the property if your interest hasn't already been peaked. The beds were very comfortable and despite the dated look, showers worked great. Its location is minutes from the main town, but you really feel like you are away from it all here. The only down side to our visit was it was pretty warm and there is no AC. There were plenty of fans though to make it bearable, oh yes, and the gorgeous pool too cool off in.

Perfect girls getaway!!!!

  • 5 of 5

We rented this house for a weekend in September...We had 8 women that needed some R&R in the Santa Barbara area. This house was PERFECT! It is very secluded and quiet...Its up on the hill so the views are magnificent! We spent most of the time relaxing by the pool (which was heated). There were plenty of lounge chairs and seating around the pool! The kitchen was stocked so all we had to bring was the food! Rooms were spacious and beds were comfy. Worth every penny!!!

The only downfall is that since it is so secluded our UBER drivers had trouble finding us. If you need a ride I recommend having the UBER driver call you and you walk him through the directions.

VRBO in Santa Barbara

  • 2 of 5

This was a comedy of errors. It started with the host thinking that we were to come the next day and so she was not prepared. Santa Barbara was unseasonably hot, and in a house with no air conditioning she did not have any fans. She then did provide some odd collection of fans.

She had switched off the water heater so my elderly in laws had to have a cold water shower the next day. She did turn it on later.

We all did go to bed only to be woken up by ants all over the bed and in my pajamas, biting. Most unpleasant. Now what you would expect. We did find some spray to help a few days later.

She has a fee of $35.00 for using the gas grill. Needs to provide Yoshi mats so that she does not need to worry. The whole place needs to be cleaned up and clutter reduced. Guests need to be able to use the area and not be over whelmed by all the stuff that they have collected/

It is most unlikely that we will recommend the place to friends, even though it is in a very beautiful setting.

Hosts are very cordial.

Owner's Response: Since we do not get bad reviews I am somewhat taken aback. We strive to have everything 100% ready for guests on arrival, and provide a wonderful stay, however sometimes a glitch or two occurs. The house was ready and clean for the guests, but I had made a mistake and did think the guests were coming the following day. I was out when they arrived but was home within 15 minutes after being notified by my husband that they were here, and I did some minor finishing touches. We have three bathrooms and two water heaters. They are on timers but unfortunately the one serving Samyadev's in-laws was compromised and the pilot had to be re-lit. There was plenty of hot water to the third bathroom, and if I had known, would have advised them to use that one (the third bathroom) while I re-lit the other. The freakishly hot weather was unpleasant but beyond our control. We have a large ceiling fan in the living room. There were two free standing fans in the empty, bedroom closets and another large one in the kitchen but evidently the guests had not seen them. I set these up for them, but they had been there all along. The guests did complain to me of the lack of central air conditioning but Santa Barbara’s climate does not usually require it and few houses have it. We disclose that we don't. The ant invasion was surprising, unfortunate and completely unforeseen but probably a consequence of the unusual, extremely hot weather. Not really sure what the objection to “all the stuff we have collected” was. I do not feel it is “overwhelming” or “clutter”. We have never had objections before. The house is meticulously cleaned and work space is ample. The house interior, décor and art collection is clearly represented in the site photos. I can only assume it was not to these guests’ taste and wonder why they chose our home. Regarding the barbeque, we provide charcoal free of charge with a pre set-up starter chimney all ready to light, and there is no charge for cleaning this barbeque. We do have a gas barbeque for guests staying a week or more and if left dirty there is a $35 cleaning fee. This charge was not relevant since the guests were only staying for four nights.

Beautiful and homely

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful place, beautiful location, perfectly located near shops etc but you feel miles away from anywhere. Incredible views of the hills while you swim in the fantastic pool. Michael and Hillary are lovely and very helpful, even letting us pick fruit from their garden. Very comfortable beds. Great kitchen full of pots and pans etc for people who cook. Really feels like you're in Italy or Spain. Lovely for friends or a romantic escape from the city and a perfect place for families. We're definitely coming back soon!

This is a peaceful, beautiful retreat above Santa Barbara.

Our family of 2 adults and three teenage sons really enjoyed a week long vacation here. The house and grounds are beautiful and interesting. The owners were delightful and very helpful with recommendations for local beaches, etc. We hope to come back for another family escape.

Spanish Mission Home Vacation

  • 5 of 5

This was for a family of five (son had military duty and could not join us) and three additional guests. Parents and young adults. The home is located in the beautiful hills and canyons of Santa Barbara and has a spectacular view of the hills and the ocean. The air is fresh and cool. The weather sunny, blue skies, and 70-80F. The home is surrounded by a beautiful garden with orange and lemon trees. The home itself has so much character from the unique spacious kitchen and living room, To Mother Mary and Child watching over us, to the ample of literary books which our son loved to look at. To the pool area and surrounding play area, to the garage to the roomy bedrooms. We enjoyed preparing the meals and talking. Grilling, eating and sitting by the pool or swimming and playing in the pool. At night some of us lay in the lounge chairs and looked up into the dark sky and watched the stars and milky way go by. It was so relaxing and peaceful. Close by we hiked some of the canyon trails with great vista views overlooking Santa Barbara and the ocean. We visited several great beaches recommended by our host Hillary and Michael. Played volley ball, swam in the cool ocean, played freezebee, and relaxed. We also played tennis and did some single track mountain biking near Santa Barbara. On some evenings we tried some of the local restaurants like Brophy Brothers, Agave, and Our Daily Bread. The food from all these places were great. Nothing like eating deliciously prepared fish from the ocean in front of you or drinking wine or beer from a local vineyard or brewery after a "hard" day's fun. We spent a day kayaking and hiking in the channel islands and was glad to come back to the Spanish Mission and crash. Everyone in our group slept very well. Hillary and Michael were gracious hosts and made sure our stay was comfortable and enjoyable. Hillary provided us with a long list of activities of places to see and places to eat, and detailed information regarding the different beaches. In summary we had a very pleasant, fun, activity packed, super relaxing, lots of laughter and smiles from our family group. It was a Blessed time! We even named the horses we passed each day along the driveway to and from their home "Louisa and Margaret!".
