The 'Cottage at Sunset Cove' is a fabulous oceanfront property located on private grounds that are fenced with gated-only access 5 minutes from Mendocino Village. It is oceanfront, completely isolated, and has 2 acres of flowering gardens and walking paths, with parking on site. The shingled cottage/bungalow, which is entered through a rose covered archway, is an intimate hideaway. It is decorated like a 'country bungalow' in soothing blues and whites. Stone floors are covered with comforting area rugs, the sofa has down pillows, and a bistro table holds your welcome basket. The owners have decorated with artifacts from their travels, and have included in the cottage their love of classical literature and music, and local artwork. There is a beautiful gas fireplace and a completely separate bedroom with luxurious linens. Windows overlooking the gardens and ocean are large and everywhere. You can go to sleep with the calming sound of crashing waves on the double cove inlets. Peaceful and quiet, the area is a treasure trove for discovering wildlife - deer, wild turkeys, hawks, whales, blue herons, seals, porpoises, geese, and the occasional Orca. Russian Gulch State Park and Point Cabrillo Light House are less than 1 mile away, where nature walks abound. Mendocino Village, designated an official historical town circa the 1870's, is just 2 miles away, with wonderful restaurants and pubs, hidden garden paths for strolling, and specialty shops.
The cottage has a separate bedroom with large closets, luxury linens and 6 down pillows, living room with fireplace, queen-sized pull-out sofa bed, 2 comfortable reading chairs, and French bistro table. Teak reading chairs overlook the 2-sided deck and spa. There is also a large outside table and gas BBQ for cooking. The separate kitchen has dishes, glasses, pans and other cooking necessities and specialty items, and is stocked with beer, wine, bottled water, jams, coffee, tea and condiments. A basket of 'goodies' is added for late night snacks. Music, videos, books, games, binoculars will enhance your entertainment options. Bathroom has a powerful shower and a deep soaking tub with views of the gardens. Extra large windows from both the bedroom and the living room look directly out onto the ocean through the gardens, and are adjoined by a large deck with your own hot tub and seating for viewing the water and nature. Private gardens with paths surround the property and reading benches are sprinkled throughout the acreage. Best of all, there are sunsets 365 days a year (excluding rainy days, of course!) and you can view them all!
Because of the proximity to the ocean, this property is not suitable for children under 14.

Jerry and Cathy Karabensh have lived in Mendocino for 16 years, are retired, and enjoying life so much in the area that they want to share their view of the world with others. They have 1dog, and invite you to bring yours along.
Cathy Karabensh purchased this cottage in 2000
Sunset Cove is actually 2 coves with black sand beaches when the tide is out. The property is cliffside, so you can see white water crashing on the rocks below. Most of the year you can see the waterfall that spills out into Sunset Cove. The Cottage is set nestled in a banquet of bushes along the north, keeping your deck and hot tub wind-free from the northwest winds that are typical of the area.
Private, tranquil, and romantic, The Cottage is traditionally decorated in seaside colors, more like a home than a hotel. The Karabensh's have included memorabilia from their extensive travels as well as books, movies, and an array of helpful holiday treats. Your own private hot tub awaits your leisure usage at any time.
This place is gem! We enjoyed 3 nights at this quiet piece of Mendocino coastal paradise. Loved the views, hot tub, and fully equipped kitchen. I would stay again!
Loved staying here and I was sorry to leave! The property is beautiful with incredible ocean views, great local hikes and points of interest. Cathy does a great job and is available if you need a tip or assistance. She prepared a comprehensive guide with her recommendations for hikes, eating out, wineries to visit , etc and the tips were spot on. The cottage is cozy, great for reading and well stocked with classic literature. The only downside was I couldn't get any wifi. But that actually became the upside and encouraged me to take advantage of hiking, star gazing and reading.
We had a wonderful 4 day stay at this beautiful cottage. It was well appointed and the kitchen had everything we needed to prepare cozy meals. The views and gardens are gorgeous. The sunsets were remarkable and we loved sitting on the bench on Luke's path and enjoying a glass of wine & whiskey before our evening out We took beautiful hikes, bike rides, and canoe day trips in the area. The hosts were very friendly and had great suggestions for enjoying the coast. We would definitely recommend this cottage to others and will return here soon.
The cottage is clean and comfortable, as well as being fully equipped with everything needed. Internet is pretty infrequent, but we fully enjoyed the break. We highly recommend this property and hope to come again.
Cathy and Jerry have a perfectly magical cottage on the bluffs of the Mendocino coast. Cathy and Jerry were the ideal hosts. They greeted us upon arrival and made sure all of our needs were met (we also got the BEST welcome basket of goodies ;). The grounds around the cottage were incredible. It was a mix of breathtaking natural beauty and beautifully tended to gardens. We enjoyed the views of the ocean from both inside the cottage as well as outside down our sweet little path (Luke's walk!). The grounds are completely fenced in and we were able to allow our two dogs to roam and explore! They loved it as much as we did. It was a sweet and truly memorable experience. Loved it!!
Wow, this was an A++ experience! Beautiful setting overlooking the rocky coast, with a private bench at the edge of the cliff (fenced for safety) for bird-watching and wave watching. This marvelous cottage was just as described, if not better. Luxurious and private. Very nicely furnished, clean, well-maintained, well-stocked. We enjoyed our private deck with hot tub, chairs and table. The grounds are gorgeous, abundant with flowers and varied greenery.
Our hosts couldn't have been nicer, yet left us alone so we felt we had the cottage to ourselves. We were welcomed with smiles and a gift basket full of delectable treats, as well as a bottle of champagne in the 'fridge since it was my birthday getaway long weekend with my husband.
We had never been to this area of CA before, and loved exploring many of the sites recommended in the excellent notebook of suggestions and recommendations provided by our hosts. McKerricher State Park was great for harbor seal watching, tidepool exploring and sunset watching, as well as walking. Nice boardwalk path there for those like my husband who can't walk far or on uneven ground. Also loved Glass Beach and its extensive tidepools, and Russian Gulch State Park. Fabulous stands of coastal redwoods to see, especially along Route 128. Ft. Bragg is an interesting town with lots to offer. The town of Mendocino is really lovely and easily walkable. Fun to explore. Also find the road out to Mendocino Headlands State Park and enjoy the beautiful views.
Wonderful dinners and service at Trillium Cafe and Albion River Inn (overlooks where Albion River flows into Ocean - spectacular view). If you're a real aficionado of sopaipillas and New Mexican / Mexican cuisine, I would NOT recommend the Purple Rose up north of Ft. Bragg. Also enjoyed the historic ambiance and dinner at McCallum House. Breakfast at Flow (up in one of the water towers) was very good, and the view from there is lovely.
Highly recommended !!! Wish we could live there! Thank you, Cathy and Jerry.
