Charming unique private house overlooking pastures near Amsterdam

Bedrooms 2
Half Baths1
Space 1,829 sq. ft.
Property type farmhouse
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

2 bedrooms, 2 full bathrooms, 1 half bathroom, sleeps 4

Our holiday home is situated in the countryside on a dike next to the picturesque river “Het Gein”. A typical Dutch surrounding where you can bike and walk. In the summertime you can swim in the river Het Gein.

Amsterdam is very nearby: with a bike it takes you 5 minutes to subway station Gein, which takes you in 20 minutes to the center of Amsterdam. With a car you can drive in 5 minutes to the P+R subway station of Gaasperplas or to the train station Abcoude. And in 15 minutes you drive to the center of Amsterdam.

Because our house is so centrally situated, all big tourist sites are within an hour drive, such as Keukenhof, Zaanse Schans, Haarlem, Volendam, Marken, The Hague, Hoge Veluwe, Utrecht and the 'Venice of the North' : Giethoorn etc etc.

The summerhouse of our farm, which was built in 1865, is situated just 200m from the city border of Amsterdam. On the first floor there are 2 bedrooms each with an individual bath room, there is a living and a large kitchen with dining table. The folding doors brings you to the big private garden which gives you a panoramic view to the surrounding pastures with grazing sheep and cows. On the second floor you will find a very spacious loft-like lounge area and large dining table with fire place. There is also a tv with dvd player.

The house has a rich history: until the 60’s the summerhouse was a cattle shed with hay-loft and the farm was leased by various farmers families. Later the land was sold by the Amsterdam municipality to the famous Dutch sculptor Nel van Lith. On the old hay-loft she gave sculptor lessons to our former Queen Beatrix. From 1995 a garden architect lived here and she designed the English/French romantic garden that is still intact today.

344517 - Farm house overlooking pastures outside Amsterdam

My wife and I have travelled quite a bit and always rent apartments or condos whenever our stay is for a few days or more. This charming cottage located a few kilometers from Abcoude along a one lane road which follows a canal on each side with old farm houses with lots of sheep, cows and horses and wind-mills scattered here and there is the most charming place we have ever rented. A five to seven minute drive brings you to the Abcoude train station which leads to Amsterdam Central station in less than 25 minutes in one direction or a few minutes more to Rotterdam in the other. Stephany, the owner was very helpful and accommodating. All and all, a five star rating for sure

A jewel of tranquility right next to busy Amsterdam

  • 5 of 5

We arrived in the afternoon on a cold winter’s day and found the house all warmed up and ready for our stay. It lies by the river Gein and is surrounded by fields as far as the eye can reach. Traffic is non existent and at night one can enjoy complete silence. Bedrooms are spacious and the bathrooms had everything we needed. The kitchen is fully equipped and is a joy to cook in. The room upstairs is very big, with light pouring in through large windows in the roof. The garden is elegant and beautiful even in winter. Traveling to the south of the house, you are in nature, with fields, lakes and little Dutch villages, where the people are incredibly friendly and inviting. To the north is Amsterdam, just 20 minutes away by Metro, which runs till late in the night. One must be crazy to want to stay in the city centre with this hidden gem so close.

Wonderful place and host!

Though we stayed for 3 days and we were barely in the house, it was a perfect start to our vacation. A home away from home! Stephanie and Raymond were so helpful and kind, coupled with a smile and a charming personalities! Thank you!

Absolutely stunning, home from home, loved every minute of our stay there

  • 5 of 5

First impressions, beautiful, every need was catered for, the location was lovely and very peaceful surroundings. Stephanie was very helpful and obliging. The location is quite remote, however this was easily overcome by Uber taxis. We didn't think that they came out to the location, however, they were very amenable. The house is lovely enough to stay in, but the proximity to Amsterdam central is not too far. We are already looking to book again next year, the days went far too quickly, everything about the whole experience was 5 star

Arrived and was greeted by Stephanie, the owner, who was very pleasant and helpful.

Farm house was nicer than the photos. So quiet and relaxing, it was lovely.

If you want to ride bikes, you will have to rent them from the town Abcoude. Aparently the rental place will deliver the bikes to you and you rent for 10 Euros a day.

We spent two days in Amsterdam and one day in Utrecht. Utrecht was more low key and very picturesque.

Expensive for shopping though in the town center. There is a large mall attached to the Utrecht Centraal train station which is probably cheaper.

We were not there to shop but we did do some window shopping and the prices in the village were a bit crazy.

Amsterdam was great and very busy. We took the train to both places fairly easily.

You can drive to the train station which is about 4 Kms away from the Farm House. To drive from the farm house to Abcoude is approximately 3kms but it is a very small road with pull overs every so often. You will need to drive slowly and very carefully so keep that in mind if you are trying to catch the train at a specific time.

We took the “Sprinter” train both places. It is white and blue with a bit of yellow. On the platform there are little screens which tell you all the stops that train will go to.

There is a ticket booth outside of the train station where you can buy your ticket for the day or you can buy a pass if you are travelling a lot and staying for more than just a few days.

We opted for the day and Abcoude to Amsterdam was 8 Eoros round trip.

Abcoude to Utretch was 11 Euros round trip.

Both took about 25 minutes.

Overall the farmhouse was just what we all needed. Quiet, comfortable, really nicely decorated and clean!!

I would love to go back 😊

Quiet & Comfortable Lodging

A wonderful, rural location very convenient to Amsterdam and surrounding sights. The owner was very helpful and accommodating, making us feel very welcome. Plenty of room for two couples, with separate en suite bedrooms and comfortable living spaces.

Absolutely fantastic

  • 5 of 5

After returning from our trip to Amsterdam I have only positive things to say about Het Gein! It is right on the outskirts of the city and the views are over fields of sheep and cows, the property is even better than the website and pictures show! It is approx a 20 min walk from Gein metro station. You will want for nothing at het gein as everything you could think of is provided from a full array of cutlery and condiments to dishwasher tablets and also washing powder for the machine, Stephanie popped round on the first night to check everything was ok and was easily contactable to sort out any problems which we had, we will definitely be returning. An absolutely fantastic property in an amazing setting
