30 years ago, Tessa painted a watercolor scene from a dream. There were water lilies, deer, a church, a cruise ship with snow-capped mountains along with sailboats, a dense forest, and a bi-plane all set amongst a 4-story home with a quaint cottage on the side.
Remarkably, Tessa & Carrie discovered such a home 7 years ago on Whidbey Island.
The Quintessa has been the choice for family reunions, corporate retreats and intimate garden weddings with accommodations for 32 guests under one roof.
Celebrations include a 50th Wedding Anniversary, and a couple who made plans on the day they married to return the island 10 years later to celebrate.
Finding local treasures to please guests is half the fun of this business. Chef Vincent Nattress with his amazing culinary skills adds to the delight of The Quintessa's guests. Cake-maker extraordinaire, John Auburn, at J.W. Desserts, always continue to impress their guests.
The Quintessa has provided lodging for the 3-day Ragnar Relay starting from the Canadian border down to Whidbey Island - 190 miles of stunning Washington scenery. This year's group is from Brook's Sports, designer & maker of high-performance running shoes. Like last year's group, it is certain that their priorities will be 'Where's the shower?” 'Take me to the bedroom!' and 'Help, I can't make it up the stairs!'
When families select The Quintessa for their reunion, it always brings back fond, heartfelt memories of Carrie’s family reunions held every year no matter where in the world the children and grandkids were living.
Tessa & Carrie actively promote Whidbey Island by enthusiastically sharing its beauty and the goodness of its multifaceted community. This is why Tessa & Carrie provide their guests with so many Whidbey options including dining recommendations and fun-filled events which can be found on their website at Q123.info.
The Quintessa purchased this estate in 2005
Whidbey Island abounds with animal life which adds to its beauty and excitement! Eagles are plentiful, as well as deer and rabbits who frolic on the grounds.
Large heron and ducks often visit The Quintessa's pond. The trail on the property crosses a year-round stream that is part of the salmon spawning cycle. The Maxwelton Outdoor Classroom is just down the street where guests can learn all about this process while on a picturesque walk. Both whales and Orcas can be seen during Ferry rides, while cruise ships, cargo ships, and even surfacing submarines can be seen from the home passing through the Sound. Our neighboring town, Langley by the Sea, is just a few miles away and offers many activities including shops, artists and dining. Be sure to try your hand at glass blowing or rent a moped while you're down at Langley!
Carrie is a consummate hostess, we arrived to a sparkling place, which exceeded our expectations and to friendly hand painted signs welcoming us by name. As it was a birthday party for a teenager we'd booked her place for, it lent perfectly to the party atmosphere. We loved the Quintessa and will hope to make it an annual thing. Carrie is super sweet too, we highly recommend her and the Quintessa!
We had a GREAT family reunion at the Quintessa July 2-10. The house was wonderful, the kitchen full of the things we needed to cook for so many and the property was amazing.
We cooked every meal at the house and we were pleasantly surprised at all the pots, pans, dishes, glasses - everything that we needed! The island with the huge counter tope was great for food prep and serving.
The grandkids had the best time going on adventures in the woods around surrounding the property. We set up a badminton net on the large grass area and everyone had fun playing. There was plenty of room for frisbee throwing and shooting nerf arrows.
There was a nice family room for all to gather in and visit - the grandkids playing on the floor in the same room - and it opened onto the deck and a view of the yard. There were dress ups, games and LARGE stuffed animals for the kids to play with.
This is a stupendous property and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a home aways from home for a large gathering!!! Carrie and Tessa were very welcoming, friendly and helpful throughout our time there. They answered all our questions, sent us an e-mail with events happening during our week there and were great fun to chat with when we saw them outside.

P.S. We happened to be there on the 4th of July and we had the BEST time. There was a pancake breakfast at the firehouse, and small town parade (that part of our family took part in) and amazing fireworks!!!!!!! A family even had a contraption that threw watermelons into the air where they exploded - and invited all to come and watch :-). Everyone we met in Clinton was very friendly, welcoming and fun - even the people in the local grocery store, where we went at least once a day.
The Quintessa is the ideal balance of having room enough for privacy and retreat, but inviting communal spaces to connect. We stayed here with our bridal parties and their partners/families for our wedding, and were amazed how the kids running around downstairs didn't disturb or get disturbed by the late night chatters upstairs, and we didn't feel like we were on top of each other as we all rolled through the kitchen in the morning for breakfasts. It never felt like there were 21 people there (+ more when folks came to visit). We loved that we were able to have wonderful down time with so many of our people that had come from afar without adding additional stress and coordination to the weekend. My mom and aunt were even able to host a bridal breakfast for me with ease, bringing all the women in my family together at the Quintessa on the morning of the wedding so that I didn't have to go anywhere before getting ready in the HUGE master bathroom. It was perfect. Thank you!
The owners of the Quintessa made it a wonderful experience. All are wishes were granted and more. The home is nicely equipted with well thought out details from linens to BBQ's. The kitchens are stocked with basic needs plus many surprise await in each well marked cupboard and drawer. We were a group of twenty ladies of the Seattle Arboretum, local chapter from Tacoma and Kipsap Penninsula. We spent our days touring Whidbey's, nursery's, gardens, private home gardens, metal art shops, and a large variety of vendors on the Island. We were thrilled to have had the use of the many outdoor decks to stow our treasured purchased plants on. Everything was perfect, because of the care given to all the details the Quentessa has to offer. Working with Carrie, was a delight, easily handled issues, with promt replies to questions; making my job painless. I would recommend the Quintessa to anyone wishing to spend time with family, friends, or plant lovers. The most comfortable roomy accommodations for a crowd that can easlily over flow outdoors to beauitful grounds and mountains. Thanks for asking, Bonnie Magnuson
My husband and I got married at a nearby venue on Whidbey Island and had mostly out of town guests. We rented The Quintessa as a way to bring together many of our guests under one roof to get to know each other and make a weekend of our wedding. It was a PERFECT set up for a large group. The kitchen is large, well stocked, and open. The layout of the house is great for accommodating a big group, but giving people enough space to spread out. The grounds are also beautiful with well kept gardens and a view of the water in the distance. The cottage is a nice bonus as well.
We also used the house to host our post wedding brunch the next morning after our wedding. It was the perfect set up for that, with a nice big island in the kitchen for serving a buffet, open house style meal.
Carrie was great to work with along the way. She was flexible, responsive, and very accommodating. She has also been great with communicating after the wedding weekend regarding a few items left behind by our guests.
I highly recommend the Quintessa for large group getaways and/or hosting small weddings or other events!
Five stars to the Quintessa! Carrie is so quick to respond from the get go and was so very helpful that planning for a weeklong class trip was made easy.
The estate is in a beautiful neighborhood in Whidbey Island. The children were impressed with the house but fell in love with the grounds! The gardens are well-tended and with the variety of flowers and trees, there were colorful millipedes and snails around.
Love, love the kitchen! It was huge so was easy to maneuver and was highly organized so items were quick to find. The basement with its storage full of games and costumes were a hit when we stayed at home one day! Of course the rooms were numerous and spacious and the bathrooms well-appointed that the house was able to accommodate our group of 40.
What makes this place special though are the owners. They are kind, caring and hospitable. From the rooms pre-labeled with students' names, to special gifts for the chaperones, the details were noteworthy. When we needed their help during our stay, they were swift to our aid. Whether it's information or a duct tape, they were efficient.
Highly recommend to anyone who wishes to have a wonderful time! Thank you Carrie and Tessa; looking forward to staying with you guys again! ❤️
We stayed one night at the Quintessa on Whidbey Island for a women's retreat (25 women spanning from 23-88 years old) and loved it. We had plenty of room to cook (huge kitchen with plenty of everything), visit, relax and just enjoy ourselves! It is close to the ferry and yet tucked away in a quiet setting. We plan on returning next year for two nights!!
The Quintessa has a year-round stream, pond, trails, pastoral and distant marine views. A 9-hole golf course is located on same road, as well as many local artists and organic farmers. Just a few minutes to several beaches!
