About The Quintessa
30 years ago, Tessa painted a watercolor scene from a dream. There were water lilies, deer, a church, a cruise ship with snow-capped mountains along with sailboats, a dense forest, and a bi-plane all set amongst a 4-story home with a quaint cottage on the side. Remarkably, Tessa & Carrie discovered such a home 7 years ago on Whidbey Island. The Quintessa has been the choice for family reunions, company off-sites, and intimate garden weddings with accommodations for 36 guests under one roof. Celebrations include a 50th Wedding Anniversary, and a couple who made plans on the day they married to return the island 10 years later to celebrate. Finding local treasures to please guests is half the fun of this business. Chef Vincent Nattress with his amazing culinary skills at The Orchard Kitchen adds to the delight of The Quintessa's guests. Famed cake-maker extraordinaire turned bagel maker, John Auburn, at Whidbey Island Bagel Factory, continues to impress. The Quintessa has provided lodging for the 3-day Ragnar Relay starting from the Canadian border down to Whidbey Island - 190 miles of stunning Washington scenery. This year's group is from Brook's Sports, designer & maker of high-performance running shoes. Tech companies have held department off-sites incorporating friendly competitions. And then there is Pie Camp by famous pie maker, Kate McDermott and the Art of the Pie. When families select The Quintessa for their reunion, it always brings back fond, heartfelt memories of Carrie’s family reunions held every year no matter where in the world the children and grandkids were living. Tessa & Carrie actively promote Whidbey Island by enthusiastically sharing its beauty and the goodness of its multifaceted community. This is why Tessa & Carrie provide their guests with so many Whidbey options including dining recommendations and fun-filled events which can be found on their website at VisitWhidbeyToday.com.
The Quintessa purchased this Estate in 2005
Why The Quintessa chose Clinton
Whidbey Island abounds with animal life which adds to its beauty and excitement! Eagles are plentiful as well as deer and rabbits who frolic on the grounds.
What makes this Estate unique
Large heron and ducks often visit The Quintessa's pond. The trail on the property crosses a year-round stream that is part of the salmon spawning cycle. The Maxwelton Outdoor Classroom is just down the street where guests can learn all about this process while on a picturesque walk. Both whales and Orcas can be seen during Ferry rides, while cruise ships, cargo ships, and even surfacing submarines can be seen from the home passing through the Sound. Our neighboring town, Langley by the Sea, is just a few miles away and offers many activities including shops, artists and dining. Be sure to try your hand at glass blowing or rent a moped while you're down at Langley!

Incredible stay at The Quintessa!
Working with Carrie was incredible, for our stay at the Quintessa a few weeks ago. She was very flexible when last minute things came up and she was extremely accommodating for our family who stayed the weekend. The property and home itself is beautiful and spacious. It felt like it was made for us. We were able to host a rehearsal dinner at the Quintessa and there was more than enough room for everyone who attended. I would highly recommend the Quintessa to anyone staying on Whidbey Island for one night or for several days. Carrie made the entire weekend feel so easy and seamless. I hope we can stay there again some day.
Awesome house and great communication!
We rented the Quintessa for a birthday getaway for my wife and 20 of our friends - more than enough room for everyone. We hosted a birthday dinner at the house and it was perfect - two kitchens in the main house (including the LARGE main kitchen), all of the prep pans/utensils and dishes/glassware/silverware that you would need. And Carrie and Tessa were very helpful and responsive from booking through end of our stay. Highly recommend!!
The Quintessa is a great place for a retreat!
We had a great ladies retreat from our church at The Quintessa. The house is very specious. Beautiful scenery from the windows throughout the house. Trail in the backyard is awesome.
Great place for retreats, family reunions, or any other accession.
Great location and setting for our annual gathering - spacious, clean and accommodating!
The owners of The Quintessa made our stay wonderful. Communication was timely and smooth from the initial viewing of the property through our check out. We had a group of 13, so most people had their own bed and only a few had to share bathrooms. The bathrooms are very spacious so sharing is not a problem. The beds are comfortable, plenty of blankets and linens provided. The kitchen and dining areas are large and can accommodate a variety of seating arrangements, both inside and outside on the lovely deck. The main meeting areas are very spacious and provided a cozy setting with a gas fireplace glowing on a rainy Saturday afternoon. The grounds are beautifully landscaped and the grand back lawn provided a perfect setting for a competitive game of bocce ball. As a community, we all enjoyed the variety of spaces available for small group gatherings. Thanks again to the owners for their availability and cooperation with our various requests and needs.
Wonderful location for a wonderful retreat!
Our women's choir held our annual retreat here after our previous location booked up extra early in the year. Every attendee had wonderful things to say...here are just a few of their comments:
"House was great. SO MUCH SPACE. Loved the openness. It is a great space for those who want to socialize as well as have some alone time. It's also super convenient with the multiple fridges."
"I had a great time with my choir gals. Beautiful location and spacious house."
"The large living room and kitchen on the main floor allowed all of us (22) to hang out together without feeling crowded."
"Lovely light, open spaces. I appreciated having a separate space (the cottage) so that I could decompress before/after rehearsals. It also meant I could prepare in quietness;-)"
"By far, the nicest and most convenient place we've ever held our retreats!"
Thanks to Carrie and Tessa for being so accommodating! We can't wait to be back!
Successful family reunion
Having searched extensively for a house that could easily accommodate a group of 22 in real beds and with enough space that we would not be tripping over each other, we were extremely pleased to stumble on the Quintessa. Realizing it was on an island and that we would have to plan for additional driving time between Seatac airport and the house in order to account for possible ferry delays, we booked both the main house and the Cottage. As others have written, the home and gardens are clean, well-maintained and well-equipped. And if any problems or requests surface before or after arrival, Carrie and Tessa are responsive, generous with their time and resources, and take care of situations immediately.
Having the multi-level house plus the Cottage meant our 90-year old family member could be on the ground floor (Level 2) with a bathroom right outside her door so she didn’t have to climb any stairs. It also allowed the young family with the 14-month old to have their own realm in the Cottage so they didn’t have to worry about disturbing anyone at 5:30 AM when the baby woke up. When considering the distribution of family members, we did have to be conscious though of the fact that 1 of the 2 bathrooms that served the 11 people on Level 3 was within the master suite. Therefore, people had to go through the master suite to use it.
A highlight of our August visit were the blackberries that grow near the trash can area as well as along the road across from the house. We went out many times to pick them fresh for breakfast as well as once to bake a pie and once a cake (for which Carrie and Tessa so kindly lent us the 2 eggs we didn’t have). Note: there is a deep ditch right in front of the vines at the beginning of the area along the street, but not further down the road.
At the house, the toys for young children and board as well as lawn games (stored in the lower level closet next to the laundry room) were a hit with various family members. And activities farther afield that were not mentioned on the Whidbey Island activity website that we enjoyed immensely were a private clam digging excursion to Double Bluff Beach with June Davis of Sound Water Stewards and a visit at the house from the Island Mexican Taco food truck (from Freeland) for dinner. Carrie and Tessa can provide contact information for those activities.
Looking back on our week, all 22 of us could unequivocally say that the Quintessa helped make our reunion a great success.
The Quintessa has a year-round stream, pond, trails, pastoral and distant marine views. A 9-hole golf course is located on same road, as well as many local artists and organic farmers. Just a few minutes to several beaches!
