Perfect!

  • 5 of 5

We were lucky enough to stay at this magical property for a whole month this past July. We have two children (8 and 10 years old) and it was truly the perfect place for us. While being charming and chic and lovely for the adults, it was also HEAVEN for the kids. They loved the swimming pool, ping pong, badminton, basketball, huge lawn, bicycles, and the surprise hit-- the tree swing! The house is dreamy, with everything you could possibly need, and the grounds are beautiful. Nik and Pamela were always available and quick to respond to any questions we had. It was perfect for our family of 4, plus occasional guests. I loved how great it all looked, while not being fussy and high maintenance. It has a very South of France feel to it-- casual, easy, and chic at the same time. We had a beautiful, carefree vacation at this very special spot. I hesitate to say too many glowing things (though all true!) because I would like to return often and worry it will be forever booked! Thank you, Nik and Pamela-- we hope to be back next summer!!

‘A VERY Charming Cottage, but not as immaculate as we expected’

  • 3 of 5

We stayed at this charming Montecito cottage, owned by the noted photojournalist, Nik Wheeler and his wife, Pamela. While we did have a few issues regarding the cottage’s cleanliness, I must add that Nik was a most affable and responsive gentleman who tried his very best to assure that our needs were quickly addressed. That said, there are a few elements of this cottage that quite honestly didn’t correspond to the high marks that all but one of the previous rental occupant reviews identified.

The biggest issue for my wife and me was that the home was honestly not at all as clean as one would expect for a ‘five-star’ rental. We spoke to the owner ‘after’ our stay, and he was VERY understanding of our concerns, assuring me that all of our notations were resolved. In particular, the kitchen oven was not cleaned prior to our stay, the wood counter tops were sticky to the touch, as were the kitchen, bedroom, and living room TV remotes, and the light switch in the kitchen was deeply stained. Common in the Santa Barbara area were also the ‘pharaoh ants’ that arrived on the kitchen counters. One of the contributing issues to this problem is that there are no window screens throughout the cottage, something we would have preferred, especially to keep any bugs out while allowing for a breeze to cool the home. On the positive side, Nik had his property manager promptly bring a number of ant traps, and the issue was resolved.

There is a housekeeper who came twice during our stay and she was very nice, however the ‘light cleaning’ she performed was truly minimal. She did ask us if there was anything in particular we wished cleaned, but while we didn’t really specify anything, she really didn’t do much beyond make our beds and do some light dusting

The location of the cottage is marvelously close to the town center, and the property itself is very lovely with amazing Wisteria, beautiful flowers and privacy! The cottage just needs some updated elements and TLC, and if possible some window screens. Apart from that, our stay was wonderful!

Owner's Response: We were rather surprised and disappointed at this review coming out of left field after a more than two month delay. David's oil painting of the cottage and wisteria covered front door and his frequent text messages during his stay: " Home is stunning !! Love it !!" and "Hi Nik everything looks awesome" gave us no inkling of the issues he had with the house. (During their March stay the unusually heavy rains did cause an internet interruption and a visitation by some local ants looking for dry ground. Both issues were addressed immediately by our internet technician and our housekeeper). If Bonnie and David had let us know that the cleaning service had omitted to clean or wipe anything we would have immediately had our cleaning crew rectify the problem. We have a staff of cleaners, laundress, handyman etc. whose we have trained over many years and who are available for any emergency 24/7. We feel badly that Bonnie and David did not give us the opportunity to make what they described as a "wonderful stay" even more enjoyable.

Magical!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I just spent a spent a memorable week in the "Charming Cottage" celebrating our 50th anniversary and attending a college reunion. The cottage more than lived up to its billing! Both the house and the yard are gorgeous. The house has multiple French doors and windows that bring in light and provide both access to, and wonderful views of, the property. The most difficult decision we had to make was where to sit to sip our wine! No matter where you go in the house or yard, you find comfortable seating and beautiful venues. Even the day it rained was pleasurable. We turned on the big gas fireplace in the cozy living room and enjoyed our morning coffee while watching the rain fall.

On the more practical side, the property has everything you would need for a perfect stay. The bed in the master bedroom is very comfortable, and outfitted with elegant linens. The bed faces the French doors in the bedroom, giving you a view of yard and pool. The main house has both a full and a half bath and there is a second full bath in the guest house, which is just a few steps from the master and very convenient. Both full baths have ample empty drawer space where you can stash your stuff, lots of towels, hair dryers, and even travel-sized toiletries, if you need them. The kitchen is nicely laid out with plenty of cookware and a huge stove that is a joy to use. There is an extensive selection of spices and other basics available as well. We cooked almost every day. (There's a Trader Joe's about 10 minutes from the house where you can stock up on whatever you need.) Other amenities include a lovely pool, an outdoor dining patio with fireplace, lots of other charming seating areas outside, bikes, ping pong table, and even a tree swing. The guest house, which is a delightful space on its own, has a full-sized washer and dryer. The owners, Nik and Pamela, were always responsive both throughout the booking process, and when we had questions during our visit.

Staying at the "Charming Cottage" was a bit of a splurge for us, but so very worth it! We did a lot of research before selecting a place to stay, and we made the best possible decision in renting here. This awesome property was perfect for our romantic getaway, and would also be great for two couples traveling together, a girlfriends trip, or a family with older children or teens. We loved the "Charming Cottage" and you will too!

Montecito cottage with eclectic charm

  • 5 of 5

We spent our first week in Santa Barbara during a deluge of rain. The house kept us cosey and was pleasant even without California sun. The garden is very special. Something for everyone there. The house had lots of ambiance and we enjoyed it .Nic, the owner, was a helpful and gracious host.
