Kirkwood is quiet, quaint, great for families with the best skiing in the Sierras.
Relaxing on the deck, watching the horses. Mountain and Road riding. Skiing (Telemark), Skate Skiing, Snow Shoeing to the Kirkwood Inn for Dinner. Hiking, Camping.
My family and another family have now stayed at this house for two years during the winter time for skiing at Kirkwood. We hope to make this house an annual stay as we love it so much.
The house is in a great location in Kirkwood. We get picked up at the top of the driveway by the Kirkwood shuttle and taken straight to the slopes in a matter of minutes. Alternatively, one can cross country ski straight from the house to the Kirkwood meadow.
The house is well laid out for two families to stay very comfortably. The kids love staying up in the attic room. The kitchen has what seems to be an industrial caliber oven/stove/pancake griddle. The dining room table seats 10-12 people. The fireplace keeps everyone warm and cozy.
The house is very clean and all the furnishings make it very comfortable and homey. The decor is whimsical and charming. We love it here.
We loved our stay at this house - it's beautifully appointed and has everything you need! Hope to come back one day."
We had a family vacation with 9 ,6 adults and 3 children 7,6,4 . It was perfect . Everything we expected and more. The children were able to go outside in the snow and we were able to view them from inside . They had a ball sledding on Destiney/Ledgend Mt ,right outside the window . We will be back !!
We recently stayed at this property and it was amazing. There was plenty of room for all of us, and views were amazing. Right down from the cabin is a creek that our dogs and kids played in every day, it was wonderful. There are lakes all around the cabin, we drove 5 minutes to two of them, and one of them we hiked to - several times. I would recommend this cabin to anyone who is looking to get away and just relax and enjoy the peacefulness as well as enjoy outdoor activities. The weather was wonderful while we were there through the end of July.
We stayed here the first week in February and were thrilled. It's the perfect combination of private, peaceful vacation accommodations and easy access to resort amenities. The house has great character w/ unique decorations (e.g a snowboard chandelier) and cozy spaces so it feels like a home instead of a generic rental. At home, our daughter usually doesn't like to sleep upstairs alone, but she LOVED the lone bedroom on the top floor, a converted attic space with fun angles. It has two twin beds in their own ends of a long room, so though it's a shared space, it felt private for each person. She slept great all week! The kitchen was well-organized (even the knives worked!) w/ a small bar area open to the dining and living room, so visiting over post-skiing appetizers and drinks was easy.
With Kirkwood just a couple minutes away, dashing back to the cabin for lunch was as convenient as dining on the slopes. With a wall of boot warmers near the front door, a roaring fire in the woodstove, and an awesome view of the meadow & mountains, lunches were so much more comfortable and quiet than staying at the resort (not to mention reasonably priced and healthy). We'd head back out to the slopes for the afternoon with toasty toes and happy tummies. During the weekend when parking was limited, the shuttles arrived so frequently, we weren't slowed down a bit and the large wagon w/ benches towed behind a truck was very exciting for the kids.
We took a day off to relax and recuperate by using the cross-country gear in the garage. There are 80K of trails that can be accessed right out the back door (literally, you could hold your breath from the house to the trail out back). Staying at the house allows free access to all of the trails (normally $20+/person each day). I strongly recommend taking advantage of the trails, especially the ones across the road where it felt like you were a million miles from civilization and the views were incredible! We didn't expect our "day off" to end up one of the highlights of the trip for the whole family.
For a relatively isolated resort, we were pleasantly surprised by all the evening options available. Access to the gym & rec facilities were included with the rental, the outdoor hottub was great. We also took Jim & Karen's advice and cross-country skied to the Kirkwood Inn for dinner - dreat adventure & great food. At the cabin, LOTS of recorded movies on direct tv, a cupboard full of games, & shelves of books.
We stayed over Christmas and left early because there was not enough snow. The owner was very nice to offer us a free weekend in the summer (we just have to pay cleaning fee). We took up on his genereous offer and came last weekend. We had a great time staying. The house is clean, spacious, very comfortable for 2 to 3 families. The firepit is a big hit for the children.
This is the first time we came to Kirkwood in the summer and it's a lot of fun. There're a lot of things to do. The children loved the hike to the Ditch of Doom. We will come back.
The house is on the meadow, with the Cross Country ski tracks right off of the back deck, so there are many opportunities for non-skiing related activities.
