Overview

About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

This story-book cottage is situated on five wooded acres on the ""quiet side" of the island, just a short walk or bike ride to the gorgeous oceanfront Nature Conservancy Preserve and just shy of a fifteen minute drive to "downtown" Bar Harbor and Acadia's main entrances. Landscaped gardens line the property, with birds and deer regularly passing through the yard. A screened room (added in 2015) is great for relaxing, and there's a tree-house, fire pit, and hammock for your family's use as well! There are 5 bikes available to ride to the Nature Preserve and a canoe available to explore Western Bay or Long Pond. Entrances to Acadia's beautiful carriage trails are about 10 minutes away.

Claim to fame: Sweetfern Meadow was featured on HGTV's Island Life in 2015!

In 2016 a large, tiled walk-in shower in the upstairs bath was added, so that there is now a shower on each floor. And, in early 2017, the REST of the upstairs bath was renovated and the downstairs bath and laundry area also underwent renovations!

The three bedrooms are upstairs; the sitting room, office / library, kitchen, and laundry are on the first floor. There is a detached garage with space for you to park a vehicle.

The house is fitted with everything you need to cook up a summer feast, grill with friends, and entertain the family. You'll find the cupboards stocked with many of the little things you might need while staying (think spices, plastic wrap, etc...), making your vacation easy.

Visiting Acadia and MDI is a fantastic experience and Sweetfern Meadow will make you feel right at home!

About Ellen

We currently live in central NH but plan to make Sweetfern our "forever" home in a few years, when life and jobs allow. In the meantime we are happy to share our home with you. We hope all our guests come to love Mount Desert Island as much as we do.

Ellen purchased this house in 2015

What makes this house unique

One of the things that we love about Sweetfern Meadow is that it is ideally located for exploring the WHOLE island - the eastern, harbor side, and the quieter, western side, with the town of Southwest Harbor and Acadia's mountains and carriage trails that are on that less busy side! Sweetfern's five acres also lend themselves to contentment. It's fun to come back after a day of activities and relax on the screened porch or in the hammock, have fun with the kids up in the tree-house, shoot some hoops, or enjoy the fire pit.

Wonderful cozy little place!

  • 5 of 5

My wife, her brother, and I spent three nights in Ellen and Curt's lovely cottage! It was very cozy, very clean, and very comfortable. We took advantage of the fact that there were bikes so we went out on a bike ride one day to explore the area.

The house is about 15 to 20 minutes away from Acadia National park and Bar Harbor so we explored both. We are all verhy impressed by the beauty and cleanliness of the area. We will definitely come back to this area in the future and hopefully back to this house again!

Well equipped. Close to Acadia. Also loved southwest harbor and stonington - so this is a great location. Loved the privacy. Lots of space for 4 of us.

  • 5 of 5

Easy accessibility to Acadia and downtown Bar Harbor. Bikes were very nice amenity. Didn't have time to strap the canoe on the car but another very nice amenity offered by the owners & would highly recommend this home. We'd be happy to return.

Great base for exploring the island.

  • 5 of 5

This secluded house was the perfect "home base" for our family of six to explore the whole island. Every beach, trail head or town on the island is within a 15-25 minutes drive, so we made many half day excursions. We ate most of our meals in the house, which was stocked with everything we needed and more. It's quiet and comfortable and the owners have thought a lot about the needs of their guests. Thanks!

Vacation at Sweetfern is sweet!

  • 5 of 5

We had a fabulous week at Sweetfern. The house is well situated on MDI. All areas (Bar Harbor, the park, Southwest Harbor, Northeast Harbor) are easily accessible, however it is out of the busy accepts of the island. The accommodations were fabulous. The beds are very comfortable, the linens and towels of a high quality and the kitchen is well stocked. The screen porch is a great location for a late lobster dinner. The owners were responsive to all our questions and had great suggestions for hikes, adventures, and dinner. We would highly recommend Sweetfern and hope to be back for further adventures.

Just Like Your Own Home- Only Better-Located!

  • 5 of 5

We were so happy to have rented this home on Mount Desert Island in mid-August. It is fully-equipped- a great kitchen, washer and dryer, hammock, fire pit, basketball hoop. The screened porch was a terrific place for games and reading. Most importantly, Sweetfern Meadow is spotlessly clean. We appreciated that the house is removed from the bustle of Bar Harbor but very easily accessible to it via a short drive.
