Overview

Bar Harbor and Mount Desert Island House Rental Photos and Description

House, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

This lovely cottage is situated on five wooded acres on the ""quiet side" of the island, just a short walk or bike ride from the gorgeous oceanfront Nature Conservancy Preserve and a fifteen minute drive to "downtown" Bar Harbor. Beautifully landscaped gardens line the property, with birds and deer regularly passing through the yard. A newly-built screened room is great for relaxing, and there's a tree-house, fire pit, and hammock for your family's use as well! There are 4 bikes available to ride to the nature preserve and a canoe available to explore Western Bay or Long Pond.

Also, new in 2016: a large tiled walk-in shower in the upstairs bath, so that there is now a shower on each floor. Also worth noting is that this delightful home was featured on HGTV's Island Life in 2015!

The entrance to Acadia National Park is less than 10 min away by car. The house is fitted with everything you need to cook up a summer feast, grill with friends, and entertain the family. And we'd be happy to suggest some of our favorite places to dine, swim, and explore during your trip. Enjoy!

What makes this house unique

One of the things that we love about Sweetfern is that it is ideally located for exploring the WHOLE island - the eastern, harbor side, and the quieter, western side, with the town of Southwest Harbor and Acadia's mountains and carriage trails that are on that less busy side! Sweetfern's five acres also lend themselves to contentment. It's fun to come back after a day of activities and relax on the screened porch or in the hammock, have fun with the kids up in the tree-house, shoot some hoops, or enjoy the fire pit.

Wonderful Week in MDI!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed at Ellen and Curt's house for a week in June. The house was ideal for our needs, with plenty of space and additional amenities like plenty of utensils in the kitchen for cooking. Everything was clean and well managed. We did not wind up making use of the fire pit, the grill, or the canoe, but those are available if you want them. The house is a bit out of the way from some of the bustling areas of MDI, which was a big plus for us. It was quiet and relaxed, but very easy to get around the island from the house. We went on several walks directly from the house, spent many days over in Bar Harbor, went all over Acadia (biked the Carriage Roads, hiked Cadillac and Acadia Mountains, visited Long Pond and Jordan's Pond, and enjoyed Echo Lake and Sand Beach), and also made it to Tremont to visit Thurston's Lobster Pound not once, but twice!

There are two bathrooms in the house, but only one upstairs and you have to go through the master bedroom to access it. This isn't a problem at all if you are a couple staying there on your own, but it's something to consider if you have younger kids who might not want to go downstairs in the night to use the bathroom, or if you're planning to share the house with another couple. I'd also note that the house does provide bikes, but they've definitely been used over the years and aren't in the best of shape -- if you plan to do serious biking, I'd recommend bringing your own or planning to rent from one of the many bike shops in Bar Harbor (we did this one day to bike the Carriage Roads).

We hope to make it back to MDI soon, and will definitely check to see if this property is available when we return.

Beautiful Secluded Get-Away

  • 5 of 5

What a perfect private retreat located just minutes from everything that MDI has to offer! We spent most of a week with two pre-teen children exploring the island and park. The home is a beautifully secluded retreat, tucked away in a private patch of woods. The kids enjoyed exploring around the house, playing in the hammock, and making smores over the fire pit. The home is very clean, well equipped, and beautifully furnished. The new upstairs shower in the master suite was definitely appreciated. Cooking at the house was a breeze with the excellent gas grill and full kitchen. Eating on the screened-in porch was delightful. We all slept wonderfully on comfortable beds after busy days exploring!

The owners provide great local information and offer many fantastic suggestions as well as maps and guide books in the home. We enjoyed many of the recommended adventures in Acadia and around MDI, from beachcombing to hiking and biking the trails and visiting several local restaurants. The bikes provided at the house were good for three of us; we also did rent one kid's bike in town at Bar Harbor. (We also brought our own hitch mount bike rack to carry all 4 bikes) The canoe was another treat - we did use it to explore Northwest Cove from the end of Town Landing Road.

Thanks so much for providing such a welcoming and comfortable home for us to enjoy on our family vacation. It really helped make our Acadia adventure a special trip for all of us. We highly recommend this property and even hope to return ourselves!

Very nice house, great location, beautiful property

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at Sweetfern very much. We appreciated the use of the bikes which were in good working order and not neglected. The beds were comfortable, the house was clean and well maintained and had everything we needed. We made a fire in the outdoor fire pit one night and had great smores. We enjoyed Bar Harbor and Acadia very much. Thank you for a great place to stay!

Exceeds Expectations!

The house and the location are better than the pictures and description depicts. The place is serene and well laid out. The hosts are gracious and accommodating. Would highly recommend for families and couples!

Exceeds expectations!

  • 5 of 5

Our family had a short three night stay at this peaceful, beautiful, and luxurious house. The photos were what sold me on this property, but the photos don't do the property justice. While just a 10-15 minute drive to Bar Harbor or Acadia National Park entrances, the location is secluded and private, with lots of outdoor space to explore, and plenty of room for us. Comfortable beds with high quality linens, new walk-in shower with big fluffy towels, well-equipped kitchen (multiple lobster pots, good knives, ample dish towels), outdoor fire pit, and lovely views of the woods and the garden from every window. This is a great retreat, yet so convenient to all that the area has to offer. We rented bikes in Bar Harbor and took a twenty mile ride on the carriage roads in the park which was a highlight of our vacation. There are bikes at the house along with a canoe that we didn't have time to use, but we appreciated that they were there.

We are unfamiliar with the area, as we are from California. The owner Ellen was prompt in responding to all my pre-visit questions, and provided great information about what to do in the area. She is an excellent host! We wish we lived closer so we could come back frequently.

Beautiful setting

  • 5 of 5

The house is nestled in the woods in a beautiful location. Very private. The house is pretty and well equipped with lots of space. Very nice to have the fire pit, hammock, canoe and bikes. The blue tooth stereo and ROKU TV were nice additions. The canoe launch site is very close and makes a nice hike. There is also a nature conservancy very close with walking trails. The only difficulty is the bathroom layout. The bedrooms are all upstairs and the one bath upstairs is off of one of the bedrooms. Only the downstairs bathroom has a shower. The upstairs has a whirlpool tub. Otherwise a perfect house.
