|Minimum Stay||3 - 7 nights|
This story-book cottage is situated on five wooded acres on the ""quiet side" of the island, just a short walk or bike ride from the gorgeous oceanfront Nature Conservancy Preserve and a fifteen minute drive to "downtown" Bar Harbor. Landscaped gardens line the property, with birds and deer regularly passing through the yard. A newly-built screened room is great for relaxing, and there's a tree-house, fire pit, and hammock for your family's use as well! There are 4 bikes available to ride to the nature preserve and a canoe available to explore Western Bay or Long Pond.
Also, new in 2016: a large tiled walk-in shower in the upstairs bath, so that there is now a shower on each floor. And, for 2017, the REST of the upstairs bath is being remodeled (gorgeous, if we my say so!) and the downstairs bath is also undergoing renovations!
Claim to fame: Sweetfern Meadow was featured on HGTV's Island Life in 2015!
The entrance to Acadia National Park is less than 10 min away by car. The house is fitted with everything you need to cook up a summer feast, grill with friends, and entertain the family. And we'd be happy to suggest some of our favorite places to dine, swim, and explore during your trip. Enjoy!
We currently live in central NH but plan to make Sweetfern our "forever" home in a few years, when life and jobs allow. In the meantime we are happy to share our home with you. We hope all our guests come to love Mount Desert Island as much as we do.
Ellen purchased this house in 2015
One of the things that we love about Sweetfern is that it is ideally located for exploring the WHOLE island - the eastern, harbor side, and the quieter, western side, with the town of Southwest Harbor and Acadia's mountains and carriage trails that are on that less busy side! Sweetfern's five acres also lend themselves to contentment. It's fun to come back after a day of activities and relax on the screened porch or in the hammock, have fun with the kids up in the tree-house, shoot some hoops, or enjoy the fire pit.
Our family our five went to Bar Harbor for fall break and had a fabulous time. Your home was the perfect place to come back to after spending the day in Acadia Park. Sitting by the fire pit enjoying the night sky was lovely. The home was well stocked with everything we needed except for groceries. Ellen answered all of my questions in a timely manner and had many resources in the home to help us decide what to do. You will not be disappointed staying in this home!!!
The house was comfortable and located in a beautiful, peaceful wooded setting. It had everything we needed, and was less than 20 minutes to downtown Bar Harbor. I hope to stay there again in the future!
We had a wonderful stay at Sweet Fern Meadow. This is a great house on a lovely property with lots of privacy and woods. The owners have gone out of their way to really think about what would make the house comfortable, welcoming, and upbeat, with comfy beds, fluffy towels, a very well-equipped kitchen with extra coffee, spices, etc, board games, a fire pit, and lots of books and maps for exploring the great things to do on Mount Desert Island. The owners were very responsive to emails and left a lot of helpful information (e.g., restaurent suggestions) in the house. The house has lots of space including a great screened in porch, and plenty of privacy with the three bedrooms (we were there with our two daughters who are in their 20s). We were there for 5 nights, hiked and biked a ton, and could have very easily stayed for two weeks.
Our group (2 married couples) loved the location of the house. It was private and serene, but still located only 15 minutes away from Bar Harbor and Acadia. We enjoyed waking up and enjoying the woods from the screened-in porch (I saw a coyote wander by one morning and a flock of turkeys came to visit). The house was clean, comfortable, and the Roku allowed us to relax every evening watching our favorite shows.
Ellen and Curt were very prompt and the whole rental process was stress-free.
It was the first time that I brought my family to Mount Desert Island and we could not have asked for more. First, the location was great. I originally thought that we should stay in Bar Harbor but I was so much happier that we stayed on the "quiet side". It turned out that things are close (for me as I do drive places for work) enough and it is great to be able to retreat when you have had enough. Nothing is too far and the serenity of the property as was as the amenities made it feel like home. We were able to cook and had everything you could want. The beds were comfortable. My father tried to track down what pillow was there because he thought he slept better than he ever had. The home was clean and comfortable and I would enjoy staying there again.
We really had a great time during our week in August 2016. Ellen and Curt have thought of everything one may need. They are very accomodating and have taken much care of their home. It is secluded yet a short drive away from everything the island offers. I would recommended this house to anyone!
Our family loved the house so much :) We hope to come back and stay again!!
