About Del Chmielewski

My wife and I have lived in Wisconsin all our lives. I own a CPA firm and love to travel to exotic places. This is our dream retirement home.

Del Chmielewski purchased this house in 2009

Why Del Chmielewski chose Puntarenas

In 2000 a friend recommended that we visit the Uvita Costa Rica area. We fell in love with the area and bought land in 2002. It is the only area on the Pacific Coast where the mountains come right down to the ocean making it the most dramatic landscape. Uvita area has the following amenities: National Park with Whale Watching,200-500ft waterfalls,Best Deep-sea fishing in World,Most eco-diversity in World, Many Americans who live there. I call it the 'Naples of Costa Rica'.

What makes this house unique

The best most expansive (50+ miles) oceanviews in all of Costa Rica. One of the largest private lots in our development 13.3 acres , which means more privacy for you.

Friendliest , most helpful staff as witnessed by our reviews

Guestbook comments from the owner

Good choice for first trip to Costa Rica

  • 5 of 5

This was our first trip to Costa Rica. This property, and Uvita in general, seemed to be a good choice.

The owner Del made every effort to help non-Spanish speaking Americans have a great first trip. We were glad we took his offer to rent his vehicle (we met folks who had bad experiences with car rental) and to have caretaker Alex pick us up in San Jose. And, Del arranged some great day trips and provided lots of helpful info on the area. And, Estephanie cooked several dinners for us and did a great job.

We were also happy with the choice of Uvita as a destination. It is small enough to have a local feel but not isolated or remote. Beach trips, horse back riding trips, zip lining, fishing all within an hour. No big gated resorts or high pressure urban density. Lots of small and local places to eat and a few higher end. Beaches especially beautiful and empty. People very friendly.

The house is very comfortable. The view is as advertised and the property is very quiet high on the mountain with plants and wildlife abundant. We found the pool, kitchen and bedrooms/bathroom all easy to use and right-sized (ie not overdone). The internet was a tad spotty. Alex and Estephanie took care of everything very well and pointed us to some nice places to visit.

As we got to know our way around the area, the climb up the mountain to the house seemed less intimidating. You need 4 wheel drive and a steady hand but "steep" somehow does not do it justice. We allowed 15-20 minutes to get from the house to Uvita.

The work on the new house on the same property and just down the hill was wrapping up when we were there and that may change the feel of the original house a bit. It is well down the hill but the drive to the new house goes past the original house.

I would recommend both the house and Uvita.

The best of the best

  • 5 of 5

Renting this villa is and was one of the best vacation experiences I have been able to share with my family. Can't say enough about the ambience, location and accomodations to make this such a memorable trip. On site support staff was excellent, helpful and available. What a paradise of sight and sound! For those who like being off the beaten path, this is the place to be. All the activity and dining recommendations were spot on. Spectacular sunsets are the norm and the food choices worth a little travel. La Parcela, Hacinda Baru, Marina Bellina, the list goes on for all the things to do. My family is already clamoring for a return trip. I would recommend this property unreservedly! I know reviews like this are hard to believe but all I can say is you have to experience it because some things are hard to put into words. PS. I do have the pictures to prove it!

Owner's Response: Paul, It was a pleasure to share my retirement estate with you and your family. I believe planning a vacation to an unfamiliar destination can be difficult and that is why I personally get so involved in helping my guests to "make it a trip of a lifetime". From offering airport pickup , tour booking, favorite restaurants list, and even renting my car to them. I am constantly working on training my staff to provide the best service as well as constantly adding amenities to my home. Your review is testimony that my hard work as well as my staffs is living up to and exceeding my guests expectations. I look forward to helping you plan your next stay at "Del Congos de Uvita"

Beautiful Views and Great Accomodations

  • 4 of 5

Del Congos is a beautiful property located high above the coast near the town of Uvita. The views are spectacular and the surrounding jungle is lush and full of colorful birds and other wildlife. The main house was perfect for three couples with a master bedroom on the upper level and two nice sized bedrooms on the main level. Each has their own private bath. The kitchen is in the center of the house and the eating and other common areas are outside under a nice shaded patio area overlooking the pool. There is a second home which was vacant when we were there. It is located down a hill below the main home and the two are far enough apart where privacy would still be good. The property is clean and very well maintained by the caretakers, Alex and Estephany, who live in a casita onsite. We rented the Toyota Prado from the owner and hired Alex to be our driver for the week so we wouldn't have to worry about directions or driving up and down the steep hill. Alex was very gracious and willing to do whatever he could to make our vacation a great experience. It was helpful to have someone in our group who knew some Spanish, but Alex and Estephany are both very friendly and happy to assist with restaurant suggestions, etc. We did a fair amount of hiking up and down the road outside the property gate, which was a great workout and also offered some additional amazing views. There are several beautiful beaches in and around Uvita, some of which have restaurants nearby or others that are undeveloped. All were great for walking or swimming. We also went on the zipline tour (recommended) and did some snorkeling. Overall, a great place for a relaxing, laid-back vacation.

Beautiful Get Away

  • 5 of 5

Del Congos was a great escape from our cold Canadian winter. Beautiful grounds and a nice pool to relax after exploring the surrounding area. You do need to plan your day so that you minimize the number of trips up and down the road. We were fortunate to have howler monkeys nest in the trees right beside the house for two days during our stay. Lots of toucans as well as other birds. As others have commented, the caretakers are a fantastic couple. Some other members of my family rented Del's second house on the same property and it was close enough to easily walk between the two yet we could still maintain our privacy. You won't be disappointed with this selection.

Owner's Response: As you pointed out, we are unique as very few properties have caretakers that live on premises and none take care of their guests like Alex and Estephany from the meticulous cleaning (One guests son commented that it was the only house that he felt he could walk barefoot) to arranging tours and private pickup from airports, to offering organic fruits and vegetables when in season from our gardens to offering our 8 passenger SUV for rent. shortly after you book with us we will send you 7 WORD documents on how to easily finalize all the details of your trip to our Uvita paradise. The concierge services are provided at no extra charge.

Gorgeous, but not the ultimate private getaway

  • 4 of 5

The photos beautifully capture almost all aspects of the property true-to-life. We saw howler monkeys, beautiful blue butterflies and impossibly tiny hummingbirds on a couple of days during our stay. We also saw firey-billed aracari toucans almost every day. If you are seeking a place with breathtaking views, interesting wildlife and attentive care, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

However, the part that attracted us to this space was "Ultimate Privacy" mentioned a couple of times in the description. On this, the home did not deliver. The property has a second guest home on its grounds (in addition to the home for the caretakers), and the driveway to it runs just a few feet to the left alongside the pool. You can also see this new place from the master shower.

The home is designed for lounging outside, with the sofas outside and no real indoor lounging area. So as we relaxed, several times we saw a vehicle drive past with the caretakers in it. On our last full day, as we sat outside eating our breakfast at 7:00 a.m., four hikers strolling up the driveway greeted us – new guests in the other home on the property.

This level of privacy was disappointing for us staying at the home as a couple. Had we known, we may have had friends join us instead, using the other two bedrooms for a much less expensive stay.

We spent our evenings outside, and saw some spectacular insects, including a Blaberus or “death head roach” and an incredible giant 6-inch grasshopper. If bugs bug you, you’ll want to have a strategy to keep them out of your room. (Keeping the doors closed and lights off was simple and mostly effective.)

I was also caught off guard after booking with the contract stating we needed to tip daily for caretaking, with the statement “They depend on tips to live. “ – with a recommended minimum of a Jackson a day (or a Lincoln per person for larger groups). Not only did this increase the cost of our stay, but we were always wondering how best to tip. Language was also a bit of a barrier, as I have no Spanish skills to speak of, but Alex did his best.

Would I recommend the place? For a group of friends or family seeking adventure, yes. For a romantic private getaway, there are other homes in the area that offer more privacy.

Owner's Response: Thank you for staying at Del Congos de Uvita. Thank you for all your positive comments that relate to the manicured grounds, wildlife, and the privacy of our 13 acres with exceptional 50 mile ocean views. I believe that your comments about your expectations not being met with the privacy, could have been solved by better communication. We communicated several times prior to your stay and I could have communicated this to Alex and Estephany (had I known) for you so that they only came near the house when you requested, summoned by intercom, or when you travelled to town. I know that you mentioned that you visited Costa Rica frequently and I would like to suggest to you that use a Spanish Translation program (like Google Translate ,since there is Internet at the house) to better communicate while you are there. Almost all the other houses in our development and many other developments in the region are on 1 acre lots and you can see and hear your neighbors and are no where as private as our location. Since our closest neighbor is more than 450 feet in elevation below the house I guarantee that you did not see or hear them as I have not since we built the house. The hedges and exotic gardens that were planted around the house block almost all the view of the pool area. I appreciate your comments about the large grasshopper, what a bonus to see one! This is the first year in the 12 years that I have seen one, and they must be in a cycle as I first noticed one on a cash register at the large grocery store in town. Also, you may find the large screen panels that retract behind the 4 doors on the house to be useful at night for keeping out the moths that are attracted by having lots of lights on. As for daily maid service, it is optional and Estephany is not a paid employee of mine. She truly does count on tips to survive and since you were on vacation I'm sure that you appreciated someone cleaning up after you. Yes, you can catch a glimpse of the guest house roof from the master shower window however since the guest house is 60 feet lower in elevation and 75- 100 yards away thru the jungle , below the main house it was a rare occasion for you to meet them or even hear them. We consider it a privilege to have hosted you and your husband as guests and hope that you will join us again to enjoy the pure air and seclusion afforded by our estate.

Del Congo de Uvita was awesome!!

  • 5 of 5

The villa was beautiful as advertised. The scenery at the top of the mountain was awesome. The flora and fauna were beautiful. Alex and Estephene, the caretakers, were awesome. Clean bedding and clothes every day was awesome. So many great things to do from deep sea fishing, zip lining, waterfall sliding and great beaches in Quepos. Many good restaurants throughout the countryside. Costa Rica is beautiful. Highly recommend it for your bucket list.
