Overview

About the property

First level of a 2-story duplex. In quiet neighborhood so no parties (Sleeps 2)

Vista Mill Valley has the details inside and outside that warrant your consideration. Inside, the property has nice furnishings, from granite counter tops to the Fisher & Paykel gourmet gas range. The bedroom has an 8 ft glass window and a 10 ft sliding glass door. The living room has another 8 ft window, making the wooded lot a part of your experience. Your unit has its own deck, accessible from the bedroom or the main entrance. Your water view includes Richardson Bay, Tiburon, the Sausalito houseboats, Angel Island, the East Bay hills, and, on a clear night, the lit-up cranes of the Oakland waterfront, across the Bay.

Why Mill Valley?

Mill Valley is popular for visitors from around the world because it is minutes from San Francisco, yet a world apart. Famous for its wooded hillsides and water views, Mill Valley has been the home of many notables, from Jerry Garcia to Janis Joplin. Grab a coffee in our downtown, and you might just recognize a few of our current residents.

If you've not been the the San Francisco Bay Area before, do stay in San Francisco for at least one night. But then come join us here in Mill Valley, for the perfect northern California experience.

Why this property?

A few years ago we completed a major remodel, taking much of the property down to the studs. This means that you will be enjoying accommodations that are basically new. All the small details - sophisticated lighting, built-in speakers, etc. - contribute to a great experience. The kitchen is small, so we made it special, with a gourmet gas range, granite counter tops, etc. The deck was always nice, but we made it nicer, with Brazilian teak, and cable railings. And the exterior path and steps have been redesigned, to better leverage the garden.

Finally: consider our location. Mill Valley has many wonderful properties, but some of them are time-consuming to get to. This property is only 1.1 miles from the freeway ramp.

A final thought: this property has about 40 stairs to the unit. Not 40 in a row; and most of the steps are low-rise, but read my 150+ reviews, and make sure the property is appropriate for you. Thanks!

Why Bill chose Almonte

I've lived in the San Francisco Bay Area since 1978. Lots of communities are great. Berkeley's as entertaining as any place in the world, and Palo Alto and Menlo Park were both good addresses when I was working for dot-coms. And for a night-life, San Francisco is, of course, the place to be. But for being close to everything, yet feeling far away, Mill Valley is as good as it gets. (Go to Wikipedia, and look up 'Mill Valley' to see an amazing list of the rich and famous who have selected this town as their home.) While some parts of Mill Valley are hard to get to, this house is only 5.4 miles from the Golden Gate Bridge, making the property particularly practical.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Bill and Terry,

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit at your beautiful place. The interior design and attention to detail were beyond our expectations. The view and scenery from the living room and bedroom were amazing. The terraced hillside gardens were lush, beautiful and peaceful. It was close to all Marin County has to offer. We feel very lucky in finding such an outstanding and reasonably priced accommodation. Thank you very much. Looking forward to a return visit.

Affordable, Clean, Relaxing Break from the City!

  • 4 of 5

We are country folk from Ohio and came to San Francisco area with the prime goal to visit Alcatraz. The big city is out of our comfort zone, so getting to stay in a comfortable place, with room to sprawl out, at an affordable rate, away from the traffic and crowds was great for us!

We are from the flat lands, so the steep hills of the neighborhood in Mill Valley were surprising to us. The owner made it very clear that there are many steps up to the unit. Nevertheless, It IS something to really consider when thinking about how much luggage and groceries you’ll want to haul up the stairs. If you have mobility issues, you really should look elsewhere. If the 40 ish step climb is not an issue for you, it is worth the climb!

The unit was very clean and everything was in wonderful

Shape! It was nice to relax on the couch and eat at the little table after a long day at Alcatraz and Peir 39!

The view from the porch and bedroom are just as pictured and we saw the deer as well! The big buck was literally outside the doorway one day and startled my husband! ( too funny!) The walkway is pretty, especially when lit at night. The parking spot accommodated our rental minivan, but wouldn’t fit anything larger, I imagine.

Our host, Bill was a good communicator! A month or two before our trip he reached out to let us know that there was a possibility of construction to take place on his road for the dates

Of our trip. He wanted to give us the heads up so that we could make other arrangements if we wouldn’t be OK with the potential noise. We ended up staying with our reservationsbecause there was

Nothing comparable

That was as nice and affordable. It turned out there didn’t end up being any construction after all, so it all worked out perfectly. Bill’s consideration was so appreciated! Since we are foreign to public transportation. We reached out to Bill and he gave us informon how to best get to Peir 33 for Alcatraz (commuter bus #4). That really helped!

The snacks he left for us were also wonderful for a long day of travel back home! Thanks so much, Bill, for being a great host!!!!

Compact but spacious apartment

  • 5 of 5

This place was well located and beautifully maintained. Owner was friendly and courteous. There’s a galley kitchen, large living/dining room and generous bedroom. Outside was a table and chairs for coffee or wine with a magnificent view of the bay. We would go back if we were returning.

Great place in beautiful Mill Valley

  • 5 of 5

My girlfriend and I stayed here for a long weekend, and we would highly recommend Bill (the owners)'s place. He showed us where everything was when we arrived, made sure we had everything we needed, and gave us our privacy the rest of the time. He even had a few snacks and drinks waiting for us in our fridge, which we appreciated after a long day of travelling. We went hiking in Muir Woods, rented bikes in Sausalito to ride across the Golden Gate Bridge, caught some waves at Stinson Beach, and spent a day sightseeing in downtown San Francisco, all within easy driving range. Everything was very clean and well maintained, the bed was comfy, and the view from the bedroom window was incredible. If you're considering a visit to the area (and you definitely should), I would highly recommend staying here.

Lovely, quiet, comfortable, spotless

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed at this property before and have always been happy and impressed. It is spotlessly clean, spacious, and extremely well-maintained, the furnishing are contemporary and comfortable, the kitchen is well equipped. It's located in a quiet neighborhood with a lovely view, and at the same time is extremely convenient to San Francisco and various Bay Area attractions. We typically have a car and especially appreciate the included off-street, dedicated parking spot--a rare thing in Bay Area rentals. The owner is always prompt, helpful and professional. We would definitely stay here again and would highly recommend it.

Mill Valley is a special town - only 7 miles north of San Francisco, but a world apart. This vacation rental - Vista Mill Valley - is also special.

We offer a modern, sophisticated interior, beautiful Brazilian teak deck, and views to die for. And the property has location. It's not 20 minutes up in the hills, but 1.1 miles from the 101 freeway - San Francisco really is just ten minutes away.

You will need to climb 40 stairs to reach your flat, but it is worth it. It means the view is a bit better, and the garden is pleasant. Don't be surprised if a buck or two scurry away as you pass; our goldfish pond seems to be a popular watering hole!

Inside is new. New floors, new drywall, new windows, new cabinets, new tile, new designer stove, new dishes, new glassware, new bedding. Welcome to Vista Mill Valley.

Additional information about rental rates

Cleaning Fee $70
Tax Rate 10.0%

5-days required for Thanksgiving, X-Mas and New Year's Eve.
Check-in is 3pm; check-out is 11am (but I will always try to accommodate your needs).
If you need to cancel, I will attempt to re-book your nights. If I re-book 5 of your 7 nights, you will get 5/7 your deposit back. (Note that this is one advantage of booking with a very-popular property; there's a good chance that I can re-book your nights. Just don't wait until two nights before you arrive!)

Note: The county of Marin is now charging a 10% transit occupancy tax on vacation rentals, if you spend the night in them. I mention this “spend the night” detail, since many guests use my rental for daytime activities only (writing, getting away from the contractors, etc) and my understanding is that these guests do not need to pay the transit occupancy tax. Since the VRBO website does not allow guests to identify their “purpose,” I leave it to you to pay the tax; I am not a security guard for the county, and I will not be checking to see if you are sleeping downstairs! Note that the 10% applies to the nightly rental, but not the cleaning fee, nor the commission that you paid VRBO/HomeAway. Remit the tax to Marin County Tax Collector, PO Box 4220, San Rafael CA 94913 Thank you.

Owner's Cancellation Policy

  • 50% refund if canceled at least 30 days before arrival date.
  • 100% refund if canceled at least 60 days before arrival date.
  • Service Fee fully refunded on cancellations that qualify for 100% refund.
