About Vicki Pannone

We are Andy and Vicki Pannone and we have been married since 1982 and have four wonderful children. We live in Corpus Christi and started coming to the hill country with friends as newlyweds. As our family grew we began sharing our love of the Texas Hill Country with our children. All of us enjoy the great outdoors and love the hill country and we would love to share our 'piece of heaven' with you and yours. Our goal is to help you make memories with your loved ones!

Vicki Pannone purchased this cabin in 2002

Why Vicki Pannone chose Texas Hill Country

Our family had been renting cabins in the area for several years and we all loved how excited we were to head to the hills, how relaxed we felt when we arrived and how we hated to leave at the end of our stay. Our family loves to hike Garner and Lost Maples, toob the Frio, play 'Monopoly Marathons', play gin rummy, roast marshmallows and enjoy s'mores while watching thousands of stars at night. By God's grace we found St. Clare's Cabin in 2002 and have turned it into a charming getaway for our guests.

What makes this cabin unique

St. Clare's Cabin offers complete privacy as there is just one cabin on the property so you have the place to yourselves to relax and enjoy.Vicki's decorating and handiwork skills are evident throughout the cabin and she treats all her guests like family. She has tried to think of everything to make her guests feel loved and welcomed. Her hand embroidered pillow shams welcome guests into either the Cowboy Bedroom or the Americana Bedroom where the beds are amply supplied with fresh linens and homemade quilts. Vicki makes sure to leave a seasonal treat for all guests and doggie treats for our four legged guests.

So quite, so peaceful

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I and dog Zaine enjoyed this place very much. We passed it up once before we found it, I don't suggest hunting for this place at night! I loved the outdoor shower but one of the doors was broken which my husband put back in place. Fixed it just enough so we could use it. The scenery on the drive to the cabin is very beautiful, but it's zig-zaggy and you must go very slow, especially in some spots. The first day we just stayed on the property. It is so peaceful and quite and the stars are oh so bright at night. There is no outside lighting and it is pitch black at night, so if you think you might want to sit at the picnic table at night take a lantern or something. There was a burn ban when we went which I was disappointed about because I love a good fire. But nothing anyone can do about that. We went to Garner State Park a short distance away, SO beautiful! There are only two restaurants open in Leakey, I personally suggest you cook at the cabin. We were going to do more sight seeing our last full day there, but they were putting down a new road surface, and because of the extreme hills they had to shut down the road. So on our last day there we were just stuck and could not go anywhere. BUT if you gotta be stuck, what a great place to be stuck!

What an amazing little getaway we had! My daughter (6 yrs old) and I, and our dogs had a great time, and hope to return again very soon...when the burn ban is over and we can roast some marshmallows! Thank you Vicki!

How lucky to have found this!

  • 4 of 5

I would have probably rated this a 4.5 if I could. We stayed for 3 nights in April (enduring several severe thunderstorms with hail) and I still say excellent vacation! This cabin is not fancy, it's a cabin! It's got a great porch, an awesome yard with some absolutely gorgeous views, a wonderful firepit area to hang out around at night, and a beautiful rustic interior with some great luxury touches. Extremely comfortable, you just want to snuggle in and enjoy being away from everything. But you still have so many of the comforts of home. We watched a movie, played cards, listened to music, walked down to the creek (which the kids could not get enough of!). Hearing that hard rain on the tin roof was just what I needed to decompress! The bathroom is lovely, with so many wonderful touches. Yes, the screened in porch has a hole in one of the screens. We figured out after the second day that it is likely from the sweet pup that likes to come visit the cabins guests! He came on over and played with the girls and when we went on the porch, well in him came through that hole! Not a problem at all and he wandered on home when he was done playing. Vicki called us when we were almost to the cabin and let us know there had been an issue with the phone and she had someone come out to fix it. Apparently, they then found an issue with one of the outlets but didn't want to interrupt our stay so we were warned that one of the lamps in the bedroom wasn't working. Well, I found that several lamps didn't work and several outlets were out. While this caused the cabin to be a little dimmer than some may like, it was totally livable and did not throw a kink in our trip. It seems that something may have blown the outlets and the lamps and once she was aware of it, she had already scheduled someone to come out after our trip. We realize that there is always something going on with homes that you can't predict so no harm, no foul! Vicki was very friendly and called to check to make sure we were good. Washer/dryer worked great. If you are hooked on internet, the cabin does have it but it is a bit spotty. There is no cell phone coverage, if that's a big thing for you. Didn't bother us at all and we are pretty cell phone addicted! All in all, this is a place we will definitely come back to, you just can't beat the location and the beauty. Had great meals at Friends Grill (the owners were absolutely wonderful!) and Mama Chole's (good food and lots of it!). Wonderful memories made!

prettier than the pictures!

  • 4 of 5

Thank you to Vicky for sharing this great cabin! The location is beautiful, peaceful, private, and secluded. The creek on the property was dry but I assumed it would be given the drought. Amenities were many and as described. Vicky called to make sure I was settled in and another time make arrangements for someone to come by to repair the dryer and clean out the fire pit. There was a small hole in the porch screen but I saw not a single bug take advantage of it.

My dogs and I enjoyed taking daily drives and walks. Lost Maples State Park is nearby, as is a convenience store in Vanderpool.

The best part of my stay was seeing the full moon rising over the hill. Gorgeous. I would definitely like to visit again and I would recommend the cabin to others especially if they have dogs.

For those planning an extended stay and any serious cooking you might want to bring your own cookware. The few pots and pans that are provided are lightweight and the nonstick finish badly scratched and chipped. Also, where these are stored in the bottom cabinets is a cluttered, dark, and scary place.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your very kind words. We have replaced all the cookware. It has been a very busy season and the cookware has taken a beating so thank you for the heads up. You are yours are welcome back anytime.

Piece of heaven!

  • 5 of 5

This was our second stay and we came back ready to book our next. We loved every minute we were there and the cabin was perfect. The Pannone's have everything we needed and more. We never want to leave when we are there. While your visiting go into Leakey and have lunch at The Friendship Grill it was excellent. And the chocolate turnovers from Bonnie's Bakery were amazing!!! We can't wait to go back to St Clare's Cabin this fall.

Look Elsewhere.

Let me start by saying that I contacted the owner immediately upon our return from the cabin. Vicky called a week later and stated that some of the problems had been addressed but that does not change what happened to us during our visit. The following may sound picky, but we pay the owners for a service and expect it to be in a working condition with the pictures accurately reflecting the condition of the property when we arrive. We found the cabin to be a terrible state of disrepair! The outside shower had one of the doors laying in the shower, and there was algae on the concrete where the shower head had been dripping for so long. The iron under the sink was laying in two pieces, one of the bedroom doors was falling off the top hinge so you could not shut it completely (screws were missing), there is a large hole in the screen next to the front door- so you could not sit out on the screened porch at night without the bugs coming in, the fire pit was full to the top with ash and trash burned up in it. Both benches by the fire pit were broken and cannot be safely sat on without fear of injury, and the dryer was operating improperly and ruined 3 articles of our clothing. The owner did refund us a fair price for the damage done to my wife's clothing. However, there is no way that I would recommend this VRBO to a friend, or someone seeking a review on the property. With so many other great cabins in the area, and on VRBO, choose carefully before you consider this cabin.

Owner's Response: My husband and I have owned St. Clare's Cabin since 2002 and this is our very first review of this nature. We have many amenities at this cabin that the vast majority of cabins in the area do not have, one of which is a land line telephone because some cell phones don't have service in this area of the hill country. I called the guests on the evening of their arrival and as usual practice asked them "if everything was in good order". I spoke with the wife and she said everything was wonderful and they were enjoying themselves. We keep a very informative folder in the cabin with our phone numbers as well as our caretaker's numbers in it along with other helpful information. My first question to this guest is: Why didn't you call me or our nearby caretaker and let us know of your concerns so we could rectify the situation during your stay? Now I'll address the guests comments: I heard from this guest for the first time of his concerns upon his return home on a Wed. and I told him that my husband and I would be at the cabin on the following Mon. after the next guests left and would get back with him that day, which I did. Yes, the outdoor shower door had fallen off but my husband put it back on. But we do have an indoor shower in the cabin! Our caretaker could have put down Clorox on the algae and washed it down to the guests satisfaction. Yes, the iron was missing from its spot so our caretaker replaced it with a new one before their arrival, our apologies for not finding the broken one and disposing of it before your arrival. One of the bedroom door hinges was missing a screw which was fixed when we were there. It has been a busy summer so we'll be repairing the hole in the screen on the porch soon. No one else has complained about the screened in porch this summer. We have cleaned out the fire pit and have made sure the seating is satisfactory and safe. We have had the dryer repaired and I did reimburse the guests for their damaged items as he mentioned. Let me finally say, that the vast majority of cabins in the area do not have Dish satellite, complete privacy, linens and towels, all the paper and soap products provided as well as a fully stocked kitchen and a beautifully decorated cabin and not to mention a washer and dryer for guests use. We provide a wonderful seasonally decorated cabin for our guests and we have a wonderful repeat business so I believe this guest was seeking some major reimbursement which I only provided for his damaged clothing.
