We are conveniently located just outside of Lovettsville in Loudoun County, at the northern tip of Virginia -- less than a mile from the Potomac River and only six miles from the confluence of the Potomac and the Shenandoah rivers at Harper's Ferry, West Virginia.
Once a milking parlor for dairy cows, the Milk Cottage at WeatherLea Farm has been completely refurbished as a charming and cozy one-bedroom cottage with a full kitchen and bath and a large living/dining room with a convertible sofa bed to sleep 2. The cottage is furnished with attractive and comfortable antiques and art. The kitchen is fully equipped with everything guests need to prepare meals, and breakfast foods are provided as part of the rental. Guests enjoy visiting our wine grape vineyard (sometimes helping with the harvest if their visit coincides) and seeing our flock of llamas and sheep, including spring lambs. Viognier and Cabernet Franc wines made from WeatherLea grapes are available locally, and wool products from our sheep are available for purchase on the farm. The Milk Cottage at WeatherLea Farm is an ideal spot year-round for a unique farmstay experience! We are also a wedding venue in May-June and Sept-Oct; the cottage is used by wedding parties, and by other guests when no wedding is scheduled.
Surrounded by historic farm buildings that include a 1794 log and frame farmhouse and a circa 1900 barn, as well as a stunning landscape including a pond and lovely gardens and trees, the cottage also offers close proximity to many historic points of interest -- especially the Civil War sites within the 'Journey Through Hallowed Ground' historic corridor, including Antietam Battlefield, Harper's Ferry and Gettysburg (only a 45-minute drive). Visitors also have easy access to sightseeing and business in Washington D.C. by way of a commuter train that can be boarded only a mile away. For hikers, bicyclists, rafters, birdwatchers and other outdoor enthusiasts, nearby attractions include the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers, the C&O Canal Towpath, the Appalachian Trail and the Blue Ridge Center for Environmental Stewardship. Both fine dining and casual restaurants are nearby, and the historic towns of Leesburg, VA and Frederick, MD -- both of which offer an abundance of antique shops and art galleries, as well as restaurants, movies and entertainment -- are both about 15 miles away. Loudoun County, known as 'D.C.'s Wine Country,' includes over 30 wineries open for wine-tasting and purchase. And for equestrians and racing afficionados, we are about 25 miles from Middleburg, VA -- a Mecca for steeplechase races and fox hunting -- and 12 miles from the Charlestown, WV thoroughbred racetrack. Popular seasonal events in the area include the Waterford Craft Fair and the Loudoun Farm Tour in October, a number of equestrian events in Leesburg and Middleburg between May and October, and the county fairs of Loudoun in Virginia and Frederick in Maryland.
Owners Malcolm and Pamela Baldwin live in the main farmhouse and are always ready to assist guests and suggest activities, points of interest and good food and wine.
Pamela and Malcolm Baldwin are a couple in very active retirement from careers in international development and environmental law. We have lived and worked abroad and enjoy receiving guests from all over the world. We work hard on our farm tending our vineyard and our flock of sheep and llamas, and hosting weddings and events as well as overnight guests. We are deeply involved in Loudoun County efforts to preserve farmland and the historic and natural heritage of our area, while promoting the the rural economy, including tourism and the arts. We work to make our farm-based 'wool, wine, weddings and weekends' businesses as green as possible. Malcolm serves on the board of the Piedmont Environmental Council, and WeatherLea Farm has been permanently protected by a conservation easement under the stewardship of the Land Trust of Virginia.
Pamela and Malcolm Baldwin purchased this cottage in 1992
We explored Loudoun County and purchased our farm while living overseas, seeing all its wonderful amenities, nearby attractions and possibilities (as described in our property description). We also recognized the great potential of the cottage, first using it as a long-term rental property and more recently as a facility for short-term vacation and rental.
We offer unusual variety of experience, both rural and urban. Guests may explore a working farm that combines a boutique wine grape vineyard and pastures with peacefully grazing sheep and llamas with guest hospitality and a unique wedding/event space in our classic barn. The cottage is very comfortable, attractive and convenient, and WeatherLea Farm as a whole offers a wonderfully restorative country experience in a beautiful setting with friendly hosts. And just beyond our property lies a whole world of history, nature, adventure, antiquing and more...including immediate proximity to the MARC commuter train, providing easy access to the sights of Washington D.C.
A very calming and relaxing cottage. Malcolm and Pam made us feel at home with the exceptional clean cottage in a pastoral setting.
It was wonderful watching the sheep and the Llamas going about their business.
Very close to the C&O canal where we enjoyed a wonderful day of biking to Harper's Ferry.
Even a rainy day proved to be relaxing as we enjoyed the Charles Town sights and sounds.
We WILL return, and we would recommend this setting to all who wish to get away and enjoy a setting that is out of this world!
We had a wonderful relaxing time at the Milk Cottage on WheatherLea Farm. It was our first stay and it hit the description about the farm in all points. We enjoyed the large and lovingly kept farm. Pamela and Malcom are great Hosts. The farm is close to Lovettsville where you find some restaurants. We can totally recommend the Milk Cottage if you are looking for some calm and relaxing days. The farm is just lovely to walk. The animals are fun to watch-especially the llamas that are watching you!! The location is ideal to get into Harper's Ferry, the C&O canal, and many of the wineries. Pam is charming and provides everything you need as well as information about some of the wineries. There were choices in the refrigerator for breakfast which made our stay so easy. It was just like being at home. We look forward to staying again since we ran out of time to get to some of the wineries!
We had a wonderful weekend stay in the Milk Cottage located on the Weather Lea Farm property. It was the perfect autumn weekend to enjoy the lovely foliage. The Baldwins have a created a beautiful paradise in Lovettsville with the rolling hillside farm adorned with an impressive vineyard, sheep, llamas, and event barn upgraded for all types of activities.
The cottage was very comfortable and stocked with everything you need, including a nice selection of breakfast items. The peace and quiet were only interrupted with crickets and birds. The location is great for visits to historic civil war sites, Purcellville, old town Leesburg, and local Virginia wineries.
The cottage is stocked with books and videos for inside entertainment and brochures for outside local activities and great restaurant recommendations.
We loved our stay at Weatherlea Farms. The location was perfect for access to the Appalachian Trail and the C&O Canal. The farm is beautiful, quiet and a wonderful get-away. The hosts provide such a nice assortment of food for breakfast; they made meals so easy. The house is comfortable, and had everything we needed.
My family of 4 spent a weekend here - and this place knows how to bring the good life! The house is very spacious, the breakfast was plentiful, and we enjoyed 3 meals sitting right outside, just enjoying the scenery. My kids loved exploring the farm, seeing the sheep and llamas, and paddling a canoe around the pond. There are brochures with nearby attractions - which are plentiful. We spent one day at nearby Great Country Farm and another in Harper's Ferry. There are at least a dozen nearby wineries to tour in the area. It was a great weekend of relaxation away from DC - our normal home. If you're considering this place for a wedding - it's gorgeous!
