I, Wendy Anderson Halperin am a children's book illustrator and have artwork from children's books in the house. My husband John is a stone sculptor and storyteller . We work and travel a great deal in the summers because of our work so we love having families enjoy the peace and beauty the lake offers. One daughter is a dancer so we built a dance floor/deck in front of the house . It is also a very nice place to sit, do yoga etc. Our son is a restaurant manager so he built the pizza oven in the east part of the property. Only if you have experience in wood fired ovens can we offer up it's use. Our other daughter is a textile designer and so her art is also in the house. If you enjoy hand made this house all about hand made.
Wendy Halperin purchased this house in 1989
Great for family reunions. A unique and artistic home. Large grounds. Lots of activities for kids.
A lovely artsy home - great for large groups. In hot weather however ,the fans, and there are many, can't do the job of air-conditioning. Without window coverings - the sun heats up the house aplenty.
We met our best friends at Sandcastle for a combined family vacation, coming from Iowa and Ohio. 6 adults and 6 children and one very happy dog enjoyed every inch of this property.
The family-friendly house is lovely and clearly has children in mind, both inside and out.
The beach (while rocky due to apparent recent erosion) was easily accessible and very private.
We weren't looking for a posh and polished escape - we were traveling with kids who ranged in age from 4 months to 9 years. Sandcastle provided everything we needed to keep them entertained and happy and to wear them out!
The older kids LOVED the paddle board. The surrounding property with sculptures, jungle gym, basketball, chess, swings etc kept the kids busy when they needed a break from the lake. The blackberries on the property were abundant and delicious and the blueberries at the end of the road are the best we have ever tasted.
We enjoyed meals together in a variety of spots - not only in the well-appointed kitchen but also on the deck and in the yard.
It would be hard to beat Sandcastle for a family vacation. The owners were magnificent and we enjoyed our visits with them a few times throughout the week.
We visited the Sandcastle with 4 adults and 2 kids and there was more than enough room for many more. The kitchen is bright, large and has a table that can fit everyone. My children loved exploring the grounds and using the paddleboard that Wendy bought while we were there. We made pizza in the outdoor pizza oven and spent our days and evenings playing in the warm Michigan waters. Town is very close by with a huge sandy beach and lots of kayaks for rental to use out on the lake. You can't go wrong with this lovely home.
The Sandcastle is truly a wonderland with beautiful art and antiques inside and out. We stayed there for a long weekend with a group of 12 and the accommodations were perfect. My children, 2 and 5 years old, were in awe with all of the colors and trinkets throughout the house and various areas to play outside (climbing structure, see-saw, basketball court, swings). It was a vacation they will never forget. The adults, too, had an unforgettable weekend of exploring the house/grounds and pizza making in the wood burning pizza oven. Wendy was a gracious host and even got the pizza oven started for us while we explored the town so it would be ready for us upon our return.
The guys were there for a track event at Gingerman and the Sandcastle was a short drive (15-20 min) to the track. The kitchen is stocked with pots, pans, utensils, serving dishes, spices etc. so you have all you need to prepare your own meals, if you so desire.
I would highly recommend the Sandcastle for anyone looking for a unique experience in South Haven. The house is directly on the lake so don't forget the bug spray! Each night we gathered on the deck to watch the beautiful sunset. We will be back for sure. Also, don't forget to check out Wendy's books. We left with several signed copies as mementos of our stay.
We stayed here a week with our family of 6 adults and 2 children. The weather did not co-operate and we were kept inside for a few days. However, this turned out to be a blessing - we played games, cooked meals and shared family stories at the great kitchen table. When we went down to the beach, it was very private and clean - there is a good sand bar for wading just a bit to the south. The grounds are extensive and you are not right next door to your neighbor! There is a wood fired pizza oven on the property and we had a great time cooking personal pizzas one night. All in all a great place to relax and enjoy the lake, with enough to do if the weather doesn't cooperate. We met the owners, and they were very personable and provided many tips on things to do.
My sisters and I rented this house for the 4th of July week. There were 6 of us coming from Alabama and Georgia. We have family all over Michigan, so we just sort of said, here we are, come visit if you're able. The house was very artsy and unique. Every time you entered a room, there was something you hadn't noticed before to examine. I would hate to have to dust it, but I don't. It was clean and well supplied. Plenty of room, even with overnight guests. The beach was beautiful, the water a bit cold for us southerners. Our visitors enjoyed it, however! The AC worked well, when we needed it, but mostly, we slept with our windows open. Except when it stormed. The storms were at night, so they didn't impede our time visiting South Haven and Saugatuck. Great towns. Wonderful restaurants. Grocery stores and drug stores within a few miles. Walking the beach was fantastic, but the stairs to the beach were an adventure. Fire works easily seen from our beach and from some windows. Fireworks at 3 a.m. July 4, were not appreciated. That had nothing to do with the house.
we cooked a few meals in the large kitchen and used the grill. Plenty of seating and dishes and flatware. Everything was pretty awesome! The swing set, teeter totter and the giant chess set were great for our toddler visitor and adults. The sunsets were better than magnificent!
The owners were very easy to work with. Would definitely do this again!
Located 10 minutes from Downtown South Haven, where you'll find restaurants, shops, a movie theater, big sandy beach and picturesque pier.
The setting at the house is rural and private. It is a short walk to a blueberry and raspberry farm. The lake and grounds are the focus of the setting.
