With a 2-acre wooded lot with pond, Windsong is the perfect place to unwind and relax. It is a 4.8 mile ride to Canaan Valley Ski Resort, and a few minutes more to both Timberline Ski Resort and White Grass Cross-Country Ski Area. Built for comfort, offering two great rooms (adults in one, children in another?), the house has been recently extensively remodeled. At that time, we added a large great room, replaced the siding with quarter log siding, and replaced all windows with Andersens. The house sits on two acres and overlooks a private pond. On the lower deck is the 8-person hot tub, where one can relax in the warm jetted water under the stars! The house features four bedrooms (two with a queen bed each, one with a king bed, and one with two twin beds), and two full baths (one with a double Jacuzzi and shower, the other with a tub/shower); each bathroom is roomy. The kitchen is fully equipped with a smooth-top stove and oven, microwave, dishwasher, large refrigerator/freezer, and all the kitchen gadgets needed for gourmet meals (even a cookbook library specializing in books on comfort food and ski weekend meals!). Amenities include wireless internet, satellite TV (two TVs, one a 40-inch flat screen Sony), a CD player, a DVD player, and a VCR/DVD player, washer/dryer, an 8-person hot tub, and a raised hearth stacked stone wood burning fireplace, and a POOL TABLE! Three ceiling fans, iron/ironing board, hairdryers in each bathroom, too. For many more photos of each room of the house, exterior shots showing views, and a layout of the house, please go to Best of Canaan's webpage, and look under Windsong.
Sorry, NO PETS.
There are two large decks -- one wraparound -- which overlook the private wooded pond area. Across from the front of the house is a beautiful serene mountain view.
All linens (sheets, blankets, towels, kitchen linens) are provided for guests' convenience. Also provided are soaps, shampoos and body lotions, and kitchen soaps and detergents and laundry detergent. Starter supplies are provided; bring additional supplies if staying longer than a weekend.
The house is charmingly decorated in a a cow motif -- the owners have been collecting cow items for over 25 years, and have amassed quite a collection!
There is always something fun to do, all seasons, in Canaan Valley! In the winter, skiing and winter sports reign supreme. Windsong is fewer than five miles from either the Canaan Valley ski resort or the Timberline ski resort and is also close to the White Grass Cross-country ski area and to the Blackwater Falls State Park. Also in Canaan Valley are facilities for snowshoeing, ice skating, cross-country skiing, and tubing. In the summer, there is a heated outdoor pool open to the public at the Canaan Valley Lodge, and the public is also able to golf at the 18-hole golf course there. Horseback riding is close by, as well as kayaking, canoeing, mountain biking, motorcycling, etc.

Georgene and Vidal Falcon, Windsong's owners, bought the house in January of 1986, after falling in love with Canaan Valley. Over the years, our children have learned to ski at both ski areas in Canaan Valley, and we have spent many fun-filled days at Windsong with friends. We have updated and remodeled the house twice, and have tried to make it a charming, cozy, and comfortable house for ourselves and for our guests. Both Georgene and Vidal are retired from the Department of Veterans Affairs in Washington, DC, and were residents of the Alexandria, VA, area. In 2004, we retired, and moved to Elizabeth City, NC, bought an historic home (ca. 1798) and renovated it in order to fulfill our dream of owning a bed and breakfast which is now the Grice-Fearing House Bed and Breakfast, which opened in 2007! Being the owners of a bed and breakfast, we are attuned to offering amenities for making guests comfortable.
West Virginia is truly wild and wonderful!

Canaan Valley is close to the DC metropolitan area (we used to live in Alexandria), making it a convenient ski destination. The Valley is beautiful in all seasons, and is a peaceful retreat. Windsong is sited on a spacious 2-acre wooded lot, with a private pond.
Windsong is very peaceful and quiet. There is a church directly across the road from the house, and all properties are situated on generous lots (several acres). Windsong's lot is wooded, with blackberry bushes and much vegetation. Additionally, there is a scenic pond on the property. The mountain view is gorgeous! And hot tubbing under the stars in incomparable!
We've visited the Canaan Valley area of West Virginia for skiing a number of times in the past several years and we always stay at Windsong. If you're looking for a peaceful place to stay off the resort, look no further than this beautiful cabin tucked into the woods. It's a very short and enjoyable drive to either of the resorts and the added privacy and peacefulness more than makes up for the drive. I fell in love with the home the first time I visited years ago and within the past couple of years, the owners added a great room addition to the back of the house that really opened everything up. They also added a nice pool table downstairs for a little recreation when you and your guests return from the myriad of outdoor adventures Canaan has to offer. The hot-tub on the downstairs deck is always clean, well-kept, and ready to soothe your aching bones after a day of skiing. The kitchen is a pleasure to cook in and very well-equipped. If you need any basic grocery items or household items, there is a convenience store just up the street and walking distance from the home, exemplifying the meaning of "convenience store." The rooms are spacious, the beds are comfortable, and there is more than enough seating and hang-out spots for you and your guests. Windsong won my heart years ago and I'm sure it will do the same for you if you're looking for a place to stay in Canaan Valley.
Our time at Windsong has always been special. We have been canoeing on the Cheat in the Fall, skiing at Canaan and Timberline in the winter, and hiking in the spring. But what's so wonderful about Windsong is the relaxing moments sitting around the fireplace with friends or sitting on the deck overlooking the pond or relaxing in the hot tub under the stars. The kitchen is well equipped for preparing gourmet meals. The pool table in the family room is fun for everyone. I love the wifi for keeping in touch with the outside world. A great getaway for all seasons and reasons!!
We traveled to the Canaan Valley area this weekend for a whitewater rafting trip, and the house was a perfect choice for our stay. We were surprised to realize that the house is much larger than the photos make it appear - with six adults, we didn't even step foot the big living room! It is very clean and quite uniquely furnished - a comfortable place for a weekend in the mountains. We enjoyed the proximity to the little market nearby, as well as the beautiful mountain views. The property is managed by Timberline Realty, and I found them to be spectacularly helpful and approachable. We did have some issues on the first day with the hot tub, but Timberline sent someone out to rectify the issue immediately. Their responsiveness and consideration are simply unmatched. We rent a lot of properties, and I would be very pleased to work with Timberline again in the future.
A couple of things to note about the house:
- The kitchen is pretty well equipped, but make sure you bring things like Pam spray/oil, foil, saran wrap, ziploc bags, etc. Some properties have a few spares of these items, but this one doesn't and we simply forgot to bring our own.
- We also couldn't find a large skillet in the kitchen, though that could be an oversight on our part. Anyway, I'd suggest bringing one along if you're cooking for a group.
- We actually saw some kind of very large cat (seemed too big for a bobcat), and there were a lot of warnings about bears in the area, which is typical for the mountains, of course! Anyway, definitely keep a close eye on any kids or pets in your party.
- The stargazing is spectacular! We walked across the road to the big church parking lot (the very bright parking lot lights turn off around 12:15 am) and spent some time just looking at the sky. It was lovely!
- The house phone didn't work during our stay, and there is naturally no cell reception in the middle of the mountains. When we faced the hot tub issues, etc - the owner told us repeatedly to "call Timberline", which was quite impossible without a phone. I believe they are working to fix the phone issue, but in the meantime - you may need to utilize the excellent wifi to make any calls (we ended up using Skype). Fortunately, Timberline was also very responsive via email.
- And finally, I highly recommend whitewater rafting on the Cheat, and we also visited the Blackwater Falls park - gorgeous!
All in all, it was a great weekend.
I’ve been going to Wind Song for a late winter weekend getaway for 3 years now, and here are the things that keep me coming back. The location in the mountains is great if you’re interested in snow skiing or cross-country skiing, or if you’re just looking for a place to unwind. All the rooms are very comfortably furnished; the great room is quite spacious, and the fireplace adds a warm glow. Also note the whimsical cow motif! The kitchen is thoroughly equipped, suitable for tastes from casual to gourmet. In good weather you can relax on the deck and get back in touch w/nature. The outdoor hot tub is just the thing for soothing aching muscles or just relaxing under the stars—winter or summer! Wind Song is a very special place—I highly recommend it!
We've been ski vacationing in Canaan Valley for over 20 years now, and Windsong has been our stay of choice for ages. The remodeling has tremendously opened this place up, from cozy to very abundant. The kitchen is a dream to cook in, and the new greatroom is wonderful for meals, while the kids have pretty much taken over downstairs. We love the cow motif upstairs, and the kids love the rubber ducky collection downstairs in the jacuzzi. The balcony is perfect for drinks if the weather is mild, and everyone lazes in the hot tub outside in the evenings - best if snow is falling - what a sensation!
We will keep coming back. Look for our entry in the Guest Log!
I frequently spend a weekend here in late winter - although there may not be snow anywhere else, there is usually still snow on which to cross-country ski at Whitegrass, located conveniently nearby. The house is cozy but the new great room gives you plenty of space to read, play games, talk, enjoy the spectacular fireplace and hearth built from local stone, work on your computer, and even talk with the kitchen helpers all at once. The bedrooms are placed in such an arrangement that you can have privacy or a dormitory feeling, and the common areas offer plenty of seating for meals that can range from informal to more organized. I appreciate the well-equipped kitchen, and the personal touches around the house are tasteful and interesting. (It's been fun to see the cow motif grow over the years, although the cows are gone from the pasture across the road.) The indoor Jacuzzi and outdoor hot tub are wonderful after a day of strenuous exercise, and watching the full moon rise through the steam from the hot tub is a fabulous way to unwind. But the place is also fun in other seasons -- I have gone hiking near Seneca Rocks and visited the local artisans in the spring and the fall. I look forward to kayaking the river in the summer too. It truly is an all-season resort home.
