The Palio di Siena is one of the greatest horse races in Italy, if not the world. 17 contrades, or neighborhoods, in Siena compete for the ten spots available in the race, run twice a year (July 2 and August 16). A magnificent pageant precedes the race and attracts vast crowds from around the world. Both horse and rider are dressed in the colors and arms specific to their contrade and the winner is awarded a banner of painted silk, which is newly created for each race. Dating back to 1650, the Palio di Siena is a vibrant Italian tradition with the winning contrade given boasting rights for the year.
