About Brenda or Fred
We purchased this lovely farm after I (Brenda) pointed it out to my husband Fred on a drive one day and told him I would love to have a place like that someday. Well my wish came true!!! We once ran a very proserporus B&B here and even had many celebrities visit, but as Fred says 'we stopped because we got Jimmy Dean disease' from cooking so much sausage. We now offer our detatched guest cottage, the 'Evergreen', a second newer log home and one attached, but separate entrance guestroom to the main house. We will let you do the cooking. We pride ourselves in offering a unique experience, high cleanliness, great service and a 'non-commercialized' enviroment. We are on site at all times.
Brenda or Fred purchased this Cabin in 1987
Why Brenda or Fred chose Hico
It is located in the whitewater tourist area of Fayette county noted for outdoor recreation, is near the New River and Gauley River National Parks, the New River Gorge Bridge, Hawks Nest and Babcock State Parks, the best rock climbing area in the eastern United Stated, near the Hatfield-McCoy ATV trail, Summersville Lake and is located on the historic Midland Trail Scenic Highway. The property was a civil war encampment know as Dogwood Gap, the driveway is part of the James River and Kanawha Turnpike.

Wonderful place for the family!
The property was clean, a secluded yet convenient location, beautiful views, an all around great vacation destination. The kids loved the wildlife! At night the hillside lit up with fireflies, an almost magical sight. I would absolutely recommend this property!
Excellent Property, Excellent Location
My friends and I stayed at the Chestnut June 28-30th for a whitewater rafting trip. Brenda, the property and cabin were all excellent. No detail is over looked at this cabin. It is very well appointed and it is super clean and comfortable. Short drive to the guided whitewater rafting tours. Definitely will stay here for all future trips to the area!
The cabin was awesome and in a perfect location. Somewhat secluded but also fairly close to everything. It was nice and clean when we arrived and stocked with everything we needed for the week. Brenda was always available to answer any questions we had.
Warm Country Feel and Close to Activities
The house is perfect for a country get-a-away. It has that log cabin feel, but with all amenities of a stocked home. It is located about a 10 minute drive to the New River Gorge check in for rafting and is close to Hawks Nest and Babcock State Parks. Very relaxing to read on the porch swing. I would definitely recommend a sojourn here.
Once again we have the best guests! The Chestnut was neat, clean and in good order when Adele's family left after a four day visit. The cabin has a great location with most activities being within a 12 mile radius including the New River Gorge Bridge, Babcock, Hawks Nest and Carnifex State Parks, and Summersville Lake. The property has hiking paths but remains private for guests only. Some very good restaurants are located about 8 miles South of the cabin in Fayetteville along with an antique mall and several interesting shops. The Chestnut is the first cabin in this area to have solar panels installed as an additional way to protect the environment, joining our effort to keep the property chemical free since 1997. Happy guests are the best!
So, all of the previous positive comments are totally accurate. This home is not well appointed, it is PERFECTLY APPOINTED! We have friends in Edmond and family in the Summersville/Nettie area, and this place is conveniently located to both. In fact, you can easily get to anywhere you may have an interest in exploring. We explored the New River Gorge Bridge, Babcock State Park, The Exhibition Coal Mine, and my favorite place...The New River Gorge Harley Davidson store which is literally within walking distance from this property. We typically travel once or twice a year. We usually travel with our boys (12 & 18); however, this time, each brought a friend. There was more than ample space in this home. I would also like to mention that our 18 year old is 6' 8.5" and was very comfortable in this home (a lot of places are a tight squeeze for him :-)) We did not have to purchase any toiletries during our stay as hand soap, toilet paper, paper towels, etc. were available for our use. Any kitchen essential that you could possibly imagine needing is there! (steamer, blender, cutting boards, cutlery, even spices and coffee!) Whether early morning, mid-day, evening, or late at night, it is very quiet, serene, peaceful, and private. The 12 & 13 year olds LOVED the pond out back. They were there every morning. And the fire pit and hot tub were also a hit. I like to save the best for last. The cleanliness is off the chart! I am a severe germaphobe. EVERYTHING grosses me out...grime, hair, stuff floating in pools (lol), dated decor, worn furniture...pretty much anything. My issues have made it very difficult for us to travel as a family, and we usually end up leaving a day or two early because of this. Hands down, this place would receive the Joint Commission's Gold Seal of Approval! If you are in health care, you will understand. I've been a nurse for almost 13 years, so I KNOW! Everything is impeccably clean! EVERYTHING :-) I even got in the hot tub which I have NEVER done. My husband was actually in shock. This truly was our home away from home...that's how comfortable we felt being there. I actually stayed at the house alone a couple of times nestled under that awesome blue blanket, and felt completely safe and at peace. The absolute only thing wrong with this place was that we had to leave :-( We are definitely going back...soon! Also, Brenda is a GREAT communicator...before, during, and after your trip.
Once again we have the perfect guest and family who appreciate the dedication to service and cleanliness that is and has been our trademark from the beginning of our lodging business. The property and cabin are maintained with guests in mind to create the best experience that we can provide, while they are enjoying all of the outdoor adventures in the area.
Soon the cabin will have solar energy, the property has not had any chemicals applied since 1987, the rabbits, squirrels, deer and wild turkey are drawn to the clean fields. The hiking paths have great views of the area and are kept mowed to make hiking easier. The Chestnut is within 12 miles of most activities available in the area, just 8 miles from one of the coolest small towns in America, Fayetteville. Several very good restaurants are located in Fayetteville with menus on line so that guests can choose the kind of food that appeals to them. The restaurants excel in the farm to table movement with fresh produce and meats sourced from independent small farms in the local area. The New River Gorge Bridge is just six miles from the cabin, the entire New River National River area with lots of parks, hiking, scenic views, waterfalls, rock climbing, bicycling is within minutes of the property.
Weekend trip with friends
We love the Chestnut! Brenda & Fred are great to work with. We have stayed 3 times & plan on coming back in May. Love the quietness & Love the pond.
Erica and friends are perfect guest who choose the Chestnut for their weekend escape, leave the cabin perfect and enjoy the hiking paths. The Chestnut has a new copper roof, solar panels are being installed as part of our efforts to keep the property as green as possible. Guests appreciate that the property is organic, since 1997, bringing in wild turkey (18 at this time), deer, rabbits, two nesting geese and many other small animals.
Spring is starting to happen and the fields are turning green, trees are blooming as are the flowers and there are a couple new restaurants located nearby. As usual we have the best guests who become friends.
Dogwood cabins are located within 12 miles of most activities in the New River Gorge recreation area. The New River Gorge Bridge, home of the October Bridge Day event when people come from all over the world to BASE jump legally from the Bridge, is only 6 miles from the cabins. Hawks Nest State Park is 6 miles west of the cabins and has a tram from the lodge to the New River where an exciting jet boat ride will take you under the New River Gorge Bridge so that you can see for yourself the amazing structure of the bridge. In the area near Hawks Nest State Park be sure to visit the Mystery Hole for a unique look at local humor and illusion. Babcock State Park is 12 miles east of the cabins and offers a working grist mill, fishing lake with paddle boat rentals, horseback riding and easy to difficult hiking trails.
Summersville Lake is located 12 miles north of the cabins off of Rt. 19, the lake offers pontoon rentals, rock climbing and a swimming beach. Just a few miles farther on Rt 129 a visit to Carnifax Ferry State Park offers picnic areas, horseshoe pits and an outstanding viewing platform that looks down on the Gauley River Whitewater's most difficult rapids.
The town of Fayetteville, six miles south on Rt. 19, offers locally owned restaurants, an antique mall, a rock climbing store,a mountain biking shop as well as a local live theater. There are several whitewater rafting companies nearby, canopy and ziplining tours available.
There is a fascinating opportunity in Beckley, about 24 miles south on Rt. 19, to go into a once viable underground mining tour, there is also a children's interactive museum on the grounds with actual miner's homes, both workers and the superintendent's homes.
The new Boy Scout Adventure Park is just 15 miles from the cabins south on Rt. 60 at the Glen Jean exit.
The cabin property's driveway is part of the historic James River and Kanawha Turnpike. The hiking paths have outstanding 360 degree views of the area.
There are many more outstanding and exciting adventures in this beautiful mountain area, I am amazed everyday that I live in such a naturally beautiful area.
