Arguably the nicest log home rental opportunity in the New River Gorge area. There is unique privacy for guests as the cabin is on 45 acres located just off the intersection of Rt. 19 and Rt. 60. There are outstanding views from the hiking paths with a mountain top site for year-round sunset watching and star gazing. Plenty of challenging mountain biking opportunities. Enjoy seasonal opportunities including berry picking, sleigh riding and wildlife watching. Inside the cabin has a huge stone fireplace with firewood provided and an outdoor fire pit (and picnic table). XM radio, premium cable with Netflix, 4 new flat screen televisions, wireless internet, cell phone coverage, dishwasher, washer/dryer for the comfort of guests gives you modern comforts in a country setting. There is a catch and release stocked pond with no fishing license required on the property (seasonal as Lilli pads are predominate in the summer). Well stocked kitchen.
This is a nicely decorated true log home-not one piece of drywall. The kitchen is well equipped for all your cooking and grilling needs. Large lower master suite with king size memory foam mattress and private bath. There is an additional ½ bath off the vaulted living room, dining area and kitchen (with eat-in counter). Upstairs there are two bedrooms-one queen bed and one full and a loft with a futon. There is a nice sized bathroom upstairs as well. Out front there is a 48’ long porch with Adirondack chairs and a swing. Off the living room is a large screen enclosed patio with a large hot tub/Jacuzzi with outdoor speakers to enjoy the XM radio. There is also a table to enjoy meals outside.
In the event that the Chestnut is not available give us a call as other lodging options are available on the 70 acre property.
You are approximately 5 miles from the New River Gorge Bridge, the visitor’s center and the access road down to the New River (Fayette Station). Multiple rafting companies as close as 5 miles. There is a “Foodland” grocery store within two miles for your convenience. You are 15 minutes from Summersville Lake, 15 minutes to Hawks Nest State Park and 50 minutes from Winterplace Ski Resort.
Fred and Brenda are onsite to provide check-in information and to assist and provide information to help you enjoy your stay. The guest book is filled with wonderful reviews and a great source for recreation and dining ideas. Two very frequently mentioned compliments are the cleanliness of the house and Fred and Brenda’s hospitality.

We purchased this lovely farm after I (Brenda) pointed it out to my husband Fred on a drive one day and told him I would love to have a place like that someday. Well my wish came true!!! We once ran a very proserporus B&B here and even had many celebrities visit, but as Fred says 'we stopped because we got Jimmy Dean disease' from cooking so much sausage. We now offer our detatched guest cottage, the 'Evergreen', a second newer log home and one attached, but separate entrance guestroom to the main house. We will let you do the cooking. We pride ourselves in offering a unique experience, high cleanliness, great service and a 'non-commercialized' enviroment. We are on site at all times.
Brenda or Fred purchased this cabin in 1987
It is located in the whitewater tourist area of Fayette county noted for outdoor recreation, is near the New River and Gauley River National Parks, the New River Gorge Bridge, Hawks Nest and Babcock State Parks, the best rock climbing area in the eastern United Stated, near the Hatfield-McCoy ATV trail, Summersville Lake and is located on the historic Midland Trail Scenic Highway. The property was a civil war encampment know as Dogwood Gap, the driveway is part of the James River and Kanawha Turnpike.
The outstanding views from the hiking paths, privacy for guests as the cabin is on 45 acres located just off the intersection of Rt. 19 and Rt. 60, the cabin has a huge stone fireplace with firewood provided. There is a fish and release stocked pond, no license needed on the property.
My family and I rented this cabin in August to go white water rafting. This was our first time to West Virginia and we couldn't have had a better experience. The owners are amazing and provide us with a worry free vacation that exceeded our expectations. The cabin is spacious and has everything you need. Our favorite part was the full front porch that provided hours of relaxation. The property is located on a huge property of land that has trails that lead to amazing views! When we go back to West Virginia this will be the place that we will stay. In fact we will plan our vacation time around the availability of this cabin.
30 y.o. male from here from northern wv. Friends and I rented this cabin with hopes of a comfortable and private setting to come back to after partaking in the area's many thrills. We were impressed by the accomodatings available considering the reasonable price (granted, we were there Tu-Th night).
Accommodations include: a wrap around deck with a large screened in section that had a 3-4 person hot tub ready for use, very comfortable beds, some of wich had tempurpedic mattresses, xm radio, receiver, indoor-outdoor speakers, 3 bathrooms, washer, dryer, cable in every room, etc... And everything was clean. Very clean.
Aside from the many comforts provided in the house we discovered well kept trails that led us to the top of the hill for stargazing and amateur astronomy, as well as a beautiful shaded pond filled with Lillie's and frogs. Outside of the screened in porch was a gravel patio with a fire place on the outside corner and plenty of dry firewood on the other end. Out door lights allowed us to play corn hole (wv horseshoes for the uninitiated) well into the night.
Last bullet point... Privacy. Brenda, the owner, lives right down the road, but I didn't see her until I called before leaving. We spent a night or two up til 1-2 am playing music, drinking beer, and playing corn hole; not once was this an issue. Brenda appeared to appreciate the privacy as much as we did, she does live nearby after all. She was pleasant to talk to and informed us that we had probably gone overboard on cleaning. Her only request was to remove the trash.
My one and only concern was that tap water could get far too hot. I informed Brenda, and she appeared unaware yet investigative about the situation which I appreciated.
Over all, I had an amazing time near the gorge and Chestnut was the perfect sanctuary for me and my fellow adventurers. I plan on bringing family during autumn or winter. The area is beautiful and the house makes for a perfect wv woodland vacation spot. There are trails I still want to walk on the property and they would be gorgeous during fall and winter. Its a special place. Highly recommended.
Brenda was very informative and responsive during the booking process. Upon arrival we found the cabin was clean and well maintained. We were very appreciative that the cabin was stocked with all the basics. The screened in porch with hot tub was a favorite. We were given complete privacy during our stay and plan to return for our next rafting trip!
I just returned home after my second year staying at the Chestnut cabin with 2 other couples for the weekend. We are 3 best friends - we've known each other more than 50 years - and our wives. I honestly can't imagine a more ideal, fully equipped, comfortable place to spend a weekend (or even a week) with friends or family. In preparing for the trip, Brenda was ALWAYS fast to respond to emails, answer questions, give helpful tips, directions, etc. Anything you ask, she responds within hours with friendly answers. Upon arrival, everything is clean, welcoming and inviting. Our weekend consisted of relaxing, cooking up some great meals, rafting on the Lower New River and relaxing some more. The kitchen is truly fully equipped and that's coming from somone considered by my friends to be a kitchen snob. Ok - I did bring my waffle iron - but EVERYTHING else we needed for a variety of meals was right there in the kitchen. Even the XM radio was tuned to the music we all listen to! I call that magical. The location is close to rafting and is ideal in every imaginable way. I'm sure we'll be staying with Brenda again next year.
Family really enjoyed our stay. Home was very clean and comfortable. The location was excellent, convenient to all local sights and activities. Property sat on nice hiking trails. Brenda and Fred were very helpful and nice.
Oh wow! We arrived late Sunday and left on Tuesday. The cabin had everything we could ask for - complete kitchen cookware, luxurious bedding, hot tub, indoor and outdoor eating space. Very peaceful and serene. We visited the very convenient New River Gorge Bridge and downtown Fayetteville. Fred, Brenda and Casey are wonderful to work with and very accommodating. Would definitely recommend and hope to visit again soon.
Dogwood cabins are located within 12 miles of most activities in the New River Gorge recreation area. The New River Gorge Bridge, home of the October Bridge Day event when people come from all over the world to BASE jump legally from the Bridge, is only 6 miles from the cabins. Hawks Nest State Park is 6 miles west of the cabins and has a tram from the lodge to the New River where an exciting jet boat ride will take you under the New River Gorge Bridge so that you can see for yourself the amazing structure of the bridge. In the area near Hawks Nest State Park be sure to visit the Mystery Hole for a unique look at local humor and illusion. Babcock State Park is 12 miles east of the cabins and offers a working grist mill, fishing lake with paddle boat rentals, horseback riding and easy to difficult hiking trails.
Summersville Lake is located 12 miles north of the cabins off of Rt. 19, the lake offers pontoon rentals, rock climbing and a swimming beach. Just a few miles farther on Rt 129 a visit to Carnifax Ferry State Park offers picnic areas, horseshoe pits and an outstanding viewing platform that looks down on the Gauley River Whitewater's most difficult rapids.
The town of Fayetteville, six miles south on Rt. 19, offers locally owned restaurants, an antique mall, a rock climbing store,a mountain biking shop as well as a local live theater. There are several whitewater rafting companies nearby, canopy and ziplining tours available.
There is a fascinating opportunity in Beckley, about 24 miles south on Rt. 19, to go into a once viable underground mining tour, there is also a children's interactive museum on the grounds with actual miner's homes, both workers and the superintendent's homes.
The new Boy Scout Adventure Park is just 15 miles from the cabins south on Rt. 60 at the Glen Jean exit.
The cabin property's driveway is part of the historic James River and Kanawha Turnpike. The hiking paths have outstanding 360 degree views of the area.
There are many more outstanding and exciting adventures in this beautiful mountain area, I am amazed everyday that I live in such a naturally beautiful area.
