In Southwest Colorado 3 miles west of Paonia, is a Yurt nestled on a large wraparound redwood deck anchored by two mature Elms. The building is situated in close proximity to the North Fork of the Gunnison River. The Yurt is a sanctuary far removed from neighbors and below the sight-line and activity of Highway 133.The property meanders above and below the Yurt for a quarter of a mile along the river’s edge. There are established wildlife corridors for Elk and Deer. Eagles, Red Tailed Hawks, and Blue Herons nest on the property or directly across the river. Robins routinely inhabit the trees directly above the sheltering Yurt.
When entering the 700 square foot Yurt, a 14’ high skylight inset in a mad array of knotty Aspen, draws you to its center. Here the fireplace anchors the middle and the remaining amenities unwind to the outside of the circumference. Here there is full ADA kitchen and ADA bathroom, queen size bed, dining table, and sitting area. The surrounding river, mountains and cultivated farmland can be viewed ten different ways through 8 windows and 2 French doors. Think of a random compass point and there you will find a window framing your gaze. There is an openness seldom seen in standard structures. After rubbernecking for a while, your first coherent thought is, ‘I can relax here’. And the reality is, you can.

My name is George W. Hall III and I am a Sculptor with a masters in architecture from UCLA that built the VRBO property specifically for his 85 year old sculptor father. George w. Hall Jr. needed a place close to us to make sculpture, draw, read, and enjoy his remaining years with his golden retriever until the big thumb came out of the sky and squashed them both. We had the perfect location and you are looking at the result of a sons love of his father. The main house, not the rental, was placed on the Colorado Historical Register through the tireless efforts of my wife Devon VanDusen. Trust me, Without her input, your stay would be less enjoyable.
George Hall purchased this studio in 2008
The property is 35 acres that meanders along the North Fork of the Gunnison River. There are 3 small tended fields on the upper sections of the property. This is where the brick house that is on the state register is situated. The lower sections range from unmanicured meadows with random succulents to stands old growth cottonwoods on the river bank. In the center of these trees stands a primitive 30'Yurt in its own natural clearing.
Oh my! The pictures are spot on; however, they do not truly express the magical feel when you walk in the door! It's perfect, in all ways. George and Devon have done an amazing job building, furnishing, and filling the area with nature's best of flowers and trees. The large trees shade the yurt from the sun; however, for your comfort, the AC does cool the place down in the hottest part of the day. But, why stay inside when you can sit in the shade on the deck, listen to the river as it flows along, watch the butterflies as they stop at the beautiful flowers, or perhaps see deer at the river's edge. You are secluded from the road in your own private oasis where you can totally relax and clear your mind. Plenty to see and do in the area; the Black Canyon of the Gunnison is only a short drive away. So many orchards to satisfy your desire for fresh picked fruit; at this time, it's cherry season and they are awesome. Great places to eat in Paonia; if you like Italian, we highly recommend The Flying Fork. I highly recommend this, and my husband and I will definitely go back and spend more time at this magical yurt. Thank you so much, George and Devon, for sharing this magical place with everyone!
George and Devon, are wonderful host to a place of yesterday.Where you have no worries and Dreams come True. Kinda like Disneyland with nature, beauty with a taste of adventure and serenity. Awesome!
We stayed at the Riverwalk Yurt for our "mini moon" following our wedding this June. It was absolutely perfect for what we wanted, and there are few (if any) more beautiful places in Colorado than the North Fork Valley in the early summer. We tasted high-altitude wine, picked up amazing stone fruit, enjoyed the piano, and drifted off to sleep with the sound of the running river in the background. George was nearby and available for anything we needed, but we otherwise had complete privacy. We can't wait to return!
My fiancé loves yurts, and we've stayed at a couple around the state. I had my eye on this one for over a year before we could make it work out, and I'm so glad we did! From the minute we pulled up we could tell this was something special. The setting by the river is so peaceful, and we were blessed with a Spring-like setting in mid March! We even saw cherry blossoms opening up during our stay. Unbelievable!
The owners checked us in and gave us a nice overview of the yurt, the property, and the town of Paonia. They were super friendly and gave us some great recommendations (farm to table restaurant in town was GREAT!) Then a weekend of relaxation truly began. We loved sitting out by the river and soaking in the hot tub. And inside the yurt you'll find everything you need to make a meal and enjoy your time. The surrounding property is also yours to explore, and we enjoyed several hikes along the river.
This is one of those gems you almost don't want to tell anyone about for fear that your new secret will get out! If you're looking to really disconnect from everyday life and reconnect with your own thoughts or someone you love... this is the place to do it!
Our stay at the yurt was peaceful and relaxing. We had all the amenities we needed and more! Air conditioning for the summer, fireplace for the cooler days. A wonderful deck surrounds the yurt with a hot tub and a walkway to sit over the river. We were able to cook our meals when we wanted and were a short drive to some great eateries when we wanted to eat out. Our dog also had a great time exploring the property and sleeping in the sun!
Perfect place to visit for a relaxing trip to a unique and funky town. George and Devon were very accommodating with making sure we were comfortable for our visit. We arrived and Devon gave us a quick rundown of the property, phone numbers to call if we had any questions and after that we didn't see anyone within 1/4 mile of the yurt. It felt like our own personal oasis. The living space was very comfortable for us with the fireplace pumping out good heat to keep us warm. The hot tub was especially nice for relaxing. Our dog was happy with the fully fenced in deck and small yard area. So were we. We spent our time at the yurt playing chess, reading out in the adirondacks above the river, soaking in the hot tub, walking the property with the dog and consuming local food and drink. Between the microwave, cooktop and the grill, cooking was a breeze. We visited the Homestead Market and loaded up on local meats, Big B's juice, fresh eggs and cheese. Our beer came from Revolution Brewing in town ($10 to fill a growler), highly recommend. We watched the Broncos game at Louie's in town which was a very friendly and jovial atmosphere. Paonia is a special place for us to visit and we will be back again. If you are coming to/from Denver and have an extra 90 minutes for your way home, the drive along 92 through the Black Canyon is spectacular.
Vineyard walking tours with tasting rooms just a few miles away on neighboring farms,
Black Canyon National Monument located just 20 minutes away, New single track trails for mountain bikers located just outside Paonia, Walk along the rivers edge right here on the property on the lower acreage in the cottonwood forest, great for birding!
