The Garden is a fusion of Japanese-inspired naturalistic landscape and nearly an acre of lush tropical grounds. Blended with the natural surroundings, the garden courtyard features natural moss rock boulders with water gently falling creating a graceful stream flowing into the fishpond with delicate water lilies. The garden uses Japanese asymmetry and placement of boulders, rustic stone lanterns, stone water basins and fountains, bamboo fences and rustic benches.
As owner/manager of Orchid Isle Bungalows in Hilo, Hawaii, I take great pride in offering affordable, quality accommodations and hospitality to travelers visiting the Big Island. My husband, David, and I have have lived in Hilo for 40 years where we started our family and raised our three children. We started a real estate and construction business in Hawaii in 1979. The property was acquired in 2003 and my husband and I designed and built the bungalows and landscaped the grounds, taking care to preserve and restore the Japanese gardens and ponds. The gardens continue to be beautified and lovingly cared for. We reside on the property neighboring the bungalows and I greet guests personally to welcome them, handle key exchanges and respond to renters' needs and questions. The bungalows are fully furnished and have all the amenities making this a perfect island 'home away from home'. It is my pleasure to share this amazing property, as an alternative to the 'resort' atmosphere, with travelers and visitors to the Big Island seeking a beautiful vacation retreat where you will not feel like a tourist.
Mahalo nui loa, Sherron
Sherron Skeele purchased this bungalow in 2003
The Orchid Isle Bungalows property was formerly a Japanese garden developed by a Hilo resident, educator and a founding father of bonsai in Hawaii. Dignitaries from Japan visited the gardens and tour buses regularly visited the garden showplace. The gardens and ponds were well-known on the island and several generations of residents fondly recall enjoying the gardens during their childhood. The gardens was one of the first places my husband and I would show our family and friends who came to visit the Big Island. Over the years, the property changed hands and was let go. As we lived on the neighboring property, we took the opportunity to acquire the property in 2003 and begin the 'restoration' of the gardens. We made arrangements for the the unrepairable existing structure to be burned down by the fire department in a training drill for its cadets. We then embarked on the project of custom-designing and building the bungalows and restoring the existing Japanese gardens. We love to share the gardens and our ongoing efforts to beautify and landscape the grounds is in keeping with the naturalistic setting that captures the tranquility and beauty of the islands.
Thank you David and Sherron for sharing the bungalow with us as your first guests. We have had a truly relaxing week during our visit, and this has been a perfect retreat!
This bungalow is a wonderful place to stay in HIlo's cool uplands. It is located in an established older neighborhood and is set back in landscaped gardens that can be seen from the bungalow's large picture window bringing the Big Island's upland forests inside. Having been raised on the Big Island, but now living on the highly populated island of Oahu, I so appreciated relaxing in this bungalow and feeling like I returned home! I would stay here over any other high-end resort or condo anywhere else on the Big Island. The craftsmanship and decor are exquisite and the bungalow is extremely comfortable! Sherron and David were very responsive to everything we needed, yet the bungalow is equipped with everything anyone could need for a relaxing and enjoyable stay. My husband and I are already trying to figure out when we can return, and I'm absolutely recommending this rental to my large extended family and all our friends!
What a great place to stay in Hilo! I picked it from all the great reviews. One thing to note are these Puerto Rico coqui frogs that escaped from the zoo and are over populating without any predators! It's an interesting noise at night. I didn't mind it, it was kinda drowned out by the fans. But some people maybe more sensitive to the noise during the night. Also, there's no AC but the fans are decent. We didn't use the kitchen utensils because we rather eat out but it's well equipped for people that want to cook. There were many restaurant options very close by. Washer and dyer is great! Sherron was a great host! She even fwd me a warning for flash flood which was very nice of her to care. The tub is cool too! Takes a while to fill but drains quickly! Amazing place. I would go back for sure.
Impressive property well maintained and gracious hosts. Check out the restored Japanese garden beautifully recovered and definitely Zen!
My husband and I recently spent 5 nights at the Zen Bamboo Bungalow, and it exceeded our high expectations. The bungalow is lovely and spacious, and the gardens are exceptional - like your own private botanical garden. The bungalow is equipped with everything you need for your visit, including beach mats, binoculars, coolers, etc. It was great having a full kitchen, even if we mainly used it for breakfast. The furo tub was a new concept to us, but we enjoyed using it several times. Although it was a little warm during the day, the fans made the temperature comfortable at night. The hot tub is located next door, but Sherron had it ready to go for us when we agreed upon a day and time - great way to relax after a day of hiking. Having a garage (with washer and dryer) was an added plus. The location of the bungalow was great - convenient to downtown restaurants and our various activities. We would definitely recommend the bungalow to any couple visiting Hilo who want a convenient but high quality place to stay during their visit.
This is the nicest place to stay in Hilo town. Everything is perfect, from the gardens to the bed and the furo tub.
I highly recommend it!
The house and grounds were beautiful and nicely decorated. Everything we needed was there.
We were in Hilo for about a week and stayed at the bungalow. It proved to be an excellent place to jump off and do everything on the east side of the Big Island. It also proved to be a great place to come back, relax and get a comfortable night's sleep. Temperature control of the inside was a bonus too.
Do not drive off with garage door opener after your check-out like I did. Sherron was quite nice about my over sight and allowed me a few days time to get it back. Much appreciated.
Thanks for the unforgettable time. My daughter and I had a blast.
