About Sherron Skeele

As owner/manager of Orchid Isle Bungalows in Hilo, Hawaii, I take great pride in offering affordable, quality accommodations and hospitality to travelers visiting the Big Island. My husband, David, and I have have lived in Hilo for 40 years where we started our family and raised our three children. We started a real estate and construction business in Hawaii in 1979. The property was acquired in 2003 and my husband and I designed and built the bungalows and landscaped the grounds, taking care to preserve and restore the Japanese gardens and ponds. The gardens continue to be beautified and lovingly cared for. We reside on the property neighboring the bungalows and I greet guests personally to welcome them, handle key exchanges and respond to renters' needs and questions. The bungalows are fully furnished and have all the amenities making this a perfect island 'home away from home'. It is my pleasure to share this amazing property, as an alternative to the 'resort' atmosphere, with travelers and visitors to the Big Island seeking a beautiful vacation retreat where you will not feel like a tourist.

Mahalo nui loa, Sherron

Sherron Skeele purchased this bungalow in 2003

Why Sherron Skeele chose Hilo District

The Orchid Isle Bungalows property was formerly a Japanese garden developed by a Hilo resident, educator and a founding father of bonsai in Hawaii. Dignitaries from Japan visited the gardens and tour buses regularly visited the garden showplace. The gardens and ponds were well-known on the island and several generations of residents fondly recall enjoying the gardens during their childhood. The gardens was one of the first places my husband and I would show our family and friends who came to visit the Big Island. Over the years, the property changed hands and was let go. As we lived on the neighboring property, we took the opportunity to acquire the property in 2003 and begin the 'restoration' of the gardens. We made arrangements for the the unrepairable existing structure to be burned down by the fire department in a training drill for its cadets. We then embarked on the project of custom-designing and building the bungalows and restoring the existing Japanese gardens. We love to share the gardens and our ongoing efforts to beautify and landscape the grounds is in keeping with the naturalistic setting that captures the tranquility and beauty of the islands.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you David and Sherron for sharing the bungalow with us as your first guests. We have had a truly relaxing week during our visit, and this has been a perfect retreat!

Beautiful tropical retreat

  • 5 of 5

It was a clean, luxurious retreat. Everything you could possibly need or want was included. The bed was large and comfortable. The bathroom was elegant. The kitchen was well stocked and the living room was very comfortable. The lanai was perfect for watching the sunrise over the ocean. The garage was immaculate and was stocked with beach supplies, along with a washer and dryer. If you enjoy gardens this is a must. The gardens surrounding the property were lush, well maintained and beautifully designed. It was like having a small park in your back yard. You are a walking distance from the boiling pots park and very close to other parts of Hilo. I would highly recommend it to anyone visiting the island. While here we traveled to Kilauea, the Green Sand beaches near South Point, the top of Mauna Kea and many of the small parks near Hilo.

Exceeded expectations!

  • 5 of 5

Absolutely pristine, wonderfully appointed and decorated. Very pleasant surprise when we got there. Ms. Skeele has thought of everything. (Note that this rental is not handicapped accessible, though - the apartment is upstairs over the garage. This was not a problem for us, but thought people should know it in case they have any issues with stairs.)

Overall, 5 stars - I would definitely rent this property again!

A peaceful abode that soothes the soul!

  • 5 of 5

We truly enjoyed staying at the Zen Bamboo Bungalow. The moment we arrived, Sherron was there to give us a warm welcome and show us around the apartment. There are so many little things that we loved about this place, I don't know where to start. The fact that it is so central to everything on the east side of the island is just a bonus! We highly recommend it for your visit to the Big Island!

The unit is exceptionally well appointed, and very comfortable as well as centrally located.

  • 5 of 5

We love the surrounding tropical garden giving the feel of isolation from the city. Hilo is closer than we expected to other areas of the island, making this location a reasonable distance to many of the sites on Big Island.

Very nice small apartment

  • 3 of 5

The accommodations were very nice and the location was not too far from town.

The downside was in order to use the shared Spa or sauna you will need an appointment. There is a larger home next to this "garage apartment" listing and the guests do not like to share the amenities and you will most likely be treated as a nuisance if they see you using the grill or using a lounge chair. Be sure to count all the dishes and inspect all cookware closely as you will be charged dearly if anything is alleged to be missing or damaged. There is no glass stove top cleaner and if you want your deposit back be sure to take some with you if you plan to use the cook top or you will be charged.

Also check out is 10am not 11am as most VRBO's. You will be charged if you are not out by 10am.

Owner's Response: Aloha Travelers and Future Guests, Unfortunately this review is not factual and misleads our future renters. Our rental policies are provided at the time of booking. Our policy that guests reserve the spa in advance is an advantage to both owner and guests. It allows guests to use the spa privately, and owners to prepare the spa, light tiki torches and clean the spa after use. Guests are able to enjoy this wonderful experience between 9am to 9pm. ~Our two separate rental bungalows are situated on the property. The Craftsman Garden Bungalow is on the ground level and the upstairs Zen Bamboo Bungalow is above the garage overlooking the gardens. Each bungalow has its own private outdoor covered lanai or balcony, and also shares an enclosed garage and courtyard with barbecue, lounge chairs and dining furniture. Our guests are very polite and courteous about sharing the common area and using the barbecue on the rare occasion that both parties want to use it at the same time. ~Statements in this review about unfair charges for missing and/or damaged dishes, cookware and glass cooktop are false. Our guests are respectful about notifying us of any damage prior to departure. If unreported damage is found we contact guests to confirm. No guests are charged for damage without their prior consent and approval. ~Accommodations for early check-in and late check-out may be arranged in advance when our cleaning and arrival schedule permits. There has never been a late check-out fee charged to any guests. ~We apologize for the unpleasant tone of this review and have asked HomeAway/VRBO to remove it from the site. Please read the majority of our guest reviews that have a 5-star rating. Mahalo, Sherron Skeele
