The Garden is a fusion of Japanese-inspired naturalistic landscape and nearly an acre of lush tropical grounds. Blended with the natural surroundings, the garden courtyard features natural moss rock boulders with water gently falling creating a graceful stream flowing into the fishpond with delicate water lilies. The garden uses Japanese asymmetry and placement of boulders, rustic stone lanterns, stone water basins and fountains, bamboo fences and rustic benches.
As owner/manager of Orchid Isle Bungalows in Hilo, Hawaii, I take great pride in offering affordable, quality accommodations and hospitality to travelers visiting the Big Island. My husband, David, and I have have lived in Hilo for 40 years where we started our family and raised our three children. We started a real estate and construction business in Hawaii in 1979. The property was acquired in 2003 and my husband and I designed and built the bungalows and landscaped the grounds, taking care to preserve and restore the Japanese gardens and ponds. The gardens continue to be beautified and lovingly cared for. We reside on the property neighboring the bungalows and I greet guests personally to welcome them, handle key exchanges and respond to renters' needs and questions. The bungalows are fully furnished and have all the amenities making this a perfect island 'home away from home'. It is my pleasure to share this amazing property, as an alternative to the 'resort' atmosphere, with travelers and visitors to the Big Island seeking a beautiful vacation retreat where you will not feel like a tourist.
Mahalo nui loa, Sherron
Sherron Skeele purchased this bungalow in 2003
The Orchid Isle Bungalows property was formerly a Japanese garden developed by a Hilo resident, educator and a founding father of bonsai in Hawaii. Dignitaries from Japan visited the gardens and tour buses regularly visited the garden showplace. The gardens and ponds were well-known on the island and several generations of residents fondly recall enjoying the gardens during their childhood. The gardens was one of the first places my husband and I would show our family and friends who came to visit the Big Island. Over the years, the property changed hands and was let go. As we lived on the neighboring property, we took the opportunity to acquire the property in 2003 and begin the 'restoration' of the gardens. We made arrangements for the the unrepairable existing structure to be burned down by the fire department in a training drill for its cadets. We then embarked on the project of custom-designing and building the bungalows and restoring the existing Japanese gardens. We love to share the gardens and our ongoing efforts to beautify and landscape the grounds is in keeping with the naturalistic setting that captures the tranquility and beauty of the islands.
Thank you David and Sherron for sharing the bungalow with us as your first guests. We have had a truly relaxing week during our visit, and this has been a perfect retreat!
It was a clean, luxurious retreat. Everything you could possibly need or want was included. The bed was large and comfortable. The bathroom was elegant. The kitchen was well stocked and the living room was very comfortable. The lanai was perfect for watching the sunrise over the ocean. The garage was immaculate and was stocked with beach supplies, along with a washer and dryer. If you enjoy gardens this is a must. The gardens surrounding the property were lush, well maintained and beautifully designed. It was like having a small park in your back yard. You are a walking distance from the boiling pots park and very close to other parts of Hilo. I would highly recommend it to anyone visiting the island. While here we traveled to Kilauea, the Green Sand beaches near South Point, the top of Mauna Kea and many of the small parks near Hilo.
We truly enjoyed staying at the Zen Bamboo Bungalow. The moment we arrived, Sherron was there to give us a warm welcome and show us around the apartment. There are so many little things that we loved about this place, I don't know where to start. The fact that it is so central to everything on the east side of the island is just a bonus! We highly recommend it for your visit to the Big Island!
The accommodations were very nice and the location was not too far from town.
The downside was in order to use the shared Spa or sauna you will need an appointment. There is a larger home next to this "garage apartment" listing and the guests do not like to share the amenities and you will most likely be treated as a nuisance if they see you using the grill or using a lounge chair. Be sure to count all the dishes and inspect all cookware closely as you will be charged dearly if anything is alleged to be missing or damaged. There is no glass stove top cleaner and if you want your deposit back be sure to take some with you if you plan to use the cook top or you will be charged.
Also check out is 10am not 11am as most VRBO's. You will be charged if you are not out by 10am.
I would definitely recommend staying here - the bungalow is thoughtfully designed for a peaceful vacation. At night I fell asleep to the sounds of birds and nature outside. A real life sound machine! During our stay I worked remotely part of the time and was on vacation part of the time. Both purposes worked well here. We brought our five month old daughter and she also enjoyed her stay!
Every detail is taken care of here! The home is beautiful with high quality construction and furnishings. There is every thing you could possibly need, including flashlights to get to the romantic torch-lit hot tub. The acre of gardens are exquisite, and the sound of the pond adds tranquility. Breakfast on the balcony in comfy bathrobes provided was a great way to start the day. The location is great - 3 miles from downtown Hilo - yet in a quiet neighborhood. Sherron and Dave are very responsive to questions. We really loved our stay here.
This was the perfect place for our first stay in Hawai'i. A perfect jumping off point for all the many interesting things to do, and the interior setup was impeccable. Somehow feeling both spacious and cozy. A perfect place to come back to each night after a hectic day of sight seeing to relax and rejuvenate.
Having some supplies available was a nice touch that saved us time and effort. Beach mats, coolers.
The kitchen equipment was more than adequately supplied. We never lacked for anything.
Just far enough outside Hilo and up the hill to have a wonderful morning view. We loved it.
