A Perfect Place to Stay While Enjoying Glacier National Park

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the Paul Ranch just north of Babb and 5 miles south of the Canadian Border. Our family of 5 explored Glacier National Park over the course of a week based in the Paul Ranch. Everything went great. We got our groceries at the Wal-Mart in Great Falls before making the trek to Babb. There is a full size fridge and kitchen (including an outdoor grill) which allowed us to eat dinner in the house almost every night. There was plenty of room in our house while we stayed. One key to our successful trip was the washing machine and dryer. That's a game changer! Before we left home, I thought I had underpacked. I had actually overpacked. Being able to wash clothes during our vacation was key.

The view from our deck where we could eat breakfast and dinner was fantastic. It's only a short drive to the entrance to Many Glacier and just about a 20 minute drive to St. Mary to take the Going to the Sun Road.

We very much enjoyed the company of the alpacas and llama. Gene and Terry were extremely hospitable and made our stay terrific. They greeted us immediately upon our arrival. We even spent an afternoon at their cabin on Lower St. Mary Lake. It was a bit buggy, but there was a "tailgate" type of grill we could use, a 12x12 tent and some chairs we used. It was a great afternoon.

If we go back to Glacier, this is where we'll stay. It's a fantastic location. If I had to change one thing, I would have brought my passport to go into Canada. There's a duty free liquor store inside the border. We got beer at WalMart and there's a very small grocery store in St. Mary that was actually reasonably priced, but if you want liquor for cocktails, etc., then bring your passport and get it in Canada.

Overall, it was a great trip. I would recommend the Paul Ranch without reservation!!

Nice location

  • 3 of 5

The views really are beautiful from the property.

The good: The caretakers were very friendly and seemed ready to help with whatever we needed. The place was clean, spacious, warm (chilly weather!) and the beds were comfortable. Lots of clean towels. The washer and dryer worked fine. The front deck is a lovely place to be for a meal or happy hour. The location is great for getting to Waterton and Many Glaciers. Some (not us) would find the daily housekeeping to be a bonus.

The bad: Several of the windows are "blown", making it hard to see clearly out of them - a problem when you are keeping a sharp eye out for wildlife or trying to enjoy the view. The fireplace wasn't working when we were there. The caretaker offered to try to fix it but we were comfortable and decided it wasn't necessary. The kitchen utensils/cutlery/pots and pans could use an upgrade. They could particularly use some sharp knives and decent pans. We ate every meal in, so would have appreciated better tools to work with.

Bottom line? The weather was very dreary when we arrived, with low clouds obscuring most everything. Under those circumstances we were somewhat disappointed with the place initially because the views really are the best part. After staying there comfortably for two nights we woke to blue skies and the views that we were expecting. We would have to say that it definitely felt overpriced, but that is probably a function of supply and demand. Didn't pay for the WiFi (hey, we were on vacation) but agree that it should be included.

Owner's Response: UPDATE: I'm so happy to announce that we are now able to offer WIFI at no additional cost! Thank you for taking the time to review the Elk Willows guest home. I'm glad the weather decided to cooperate so you could enjoy the beautiful views. September weather can certainly be unpredictable at times. I'm glad the property managers took good care of you. Thank you for your constructive comments regarding you experience. We always do an assessment at the end of the season to make sure our guests' expectations are met and we will certainly address the issues you have mentioned. I wish I could include the cost of the wifi in the price. Unfortunately, in this rural area, we have to pay for all data used and it is limited and expensive. Knowing that many of our guests rely on email, etc. even on vacation, we try to provide that service and we must pass along part of the cost to the user. Thank you again for staying at the Ranch and we hope to see you again!

Owner's Response: UPDATE: I'm so happy to announce that we are now able to offer WIFI at no additional cost! I'm glad you enjoyed your stay. I wish I could include free WiFi... unfortunately it is so expensive in rural areas that part of the cost is passed on to users. I am constantly watching for a more suitable internet option but so far no luck. Thank you for your suggestion.

We were two retired couples looking for a unique home experience in the Many Glaciers area. Perfect!

  • 5 of 5

Barbara Paul's home was full of interesting artwork, immaculate, had the most comfortable beds, laundry facilities, and everything we could possibly want. The caretakers were very helpful and fun to talk to. We enjoyed the deck, the open space and the wildlife. Thank you so much for sharing your home!

Beautiful open views of the mountains

  • 5 of 5

This was a great place to stay on the east side of Glacier National Park - very close to Many Glacier and about 15 minutes from the St. Mary entrance. The house was extremely clean and the caretakers visited everyday to make the beds and take out the trash while we were out. Besides the views, I loved seeing the alpacas and other wildlife. As a wildlife photography enthusiast, I was amazed as the diversity of birds that visited the nearby wetlands (ducks, coots, Canadian geese, song birds, an owl and I believe 2 golden eagles or hawks). On the last morning of our stay 5 elk came out of the woods to briefly munch on the wildflowers in the early morning sunlight. What a treat!

The house is more remote than the other accommodations around, but I liked the serenity of waking up to the cows mooing and the homey feeling! Plus having laundry facilities helped to ease the transition back to reality after our vacation since I didn't come home with a mountain of dirty laundry :-)
