Overview

Puntarenas House Rental Photos and Description

3 bedrooms, 2 ½ bathrooms, sleeps 7

This is a very central, but private, location in the small fishing village of Tarcoles. It's an oceanfront property with a beautiful view of the Pacific and you are able to watch magnificent sunsets from the large covered front porch or raised gazebo. Scarlet macaws fly over morning and evening going to and from their feeding grounds and often spend time throughout the day in the trees on and around the property. You can walk on the beach for miles, sometimes without seeing another soul! Less than a 10 minute drive to the north is the Tarcoles River where you often see huge crocodiles basking in the sun.

The house is very comfortable and has a lovely bar on the front porch. Both front and back have large covered areas to sit under and relax, after a busy day of sightseeing. As an added bonus, our English speaking manager is available to help you out with car rentals, tours or anything else that you need.

Professionally managed with a personal touch by a property owner who cares!

Our manager is very helpful. She will even stock the fridge before you arrive!

You can buy fresh fish for your supper, right off the boats, from the Cooperativa only a two minute walk down the road or, if you prefer, you can go to one of the many restaurants within a few minutes drive. For all your grocery needs, Jaco boasts a new, very modern grocery store.

We are five minutes from Carara Biological Reserve where you are able to hike for hours and view the nesting boxes of the macaws. You will also see many other varieties of birds and animals.

Although our beach is not the best for swimming, due to the effect of the Tarcoles River to the north, there are several good swimming beaches within a short drive. We usually walk on the beach and swim in our private pool.

We are only 20 minutes north of Jaco, a major surfing area, and an easy one hour and 45 minute drive north of the beautiful Manuel Antonio Park where you can see white-faced and spider monkeys swinging through the trees, or perhaps a sloth, moving in slow motion through the branches.

If you are looking for a home away from home, where you can get in touch with nature & see the real Costa Rica, look no further than 'Casa Sammie.

We have a raised gazebo at the side of the house for amazing views of the Pacific & the sunset. At the back is a large covered patio and a beautiful private pool. We've also added a bodega next to the house with an additional bathroom and a third bedroom that sleeps 2 more people. Very nice & private.

Phone, Satellite TV, Full Kitchen, Microwave, Coffee Maker, Refrigerator, Blender, Toaster Oven, Cooking Utensils provided, Linens and towels provided, Clothes Washer, Charcoal Grill (BBQ), Maid Service available for a small fee, Hot Showers & hot water in the kitchen, Air Conditioners in two of the bedrooms.

Activities: Hiking in Carara Park, Golf, Fishing, Wildlife Viewing, Horseback Riding, Sightseeing, Swimming, Surfing, Birdwatching, Zip Line Canopy Tours, Butterfly Farm, Gorgeous Waterfall - hike to the bottom and swim in the natural pools, Crocodile Tours.

Area: We are only a 1 1/4 hr. drive from the airport in San Jose and, as we are in a central location, it is easy to take many tours and excursions.

Tours, Shopping and More Photos: Don't miss a tour with a local fisherman. Gino, of Tico Style Tours, or Nema, are neighbours who will take you - fishing for a day; to beautiful white sand beaches for a swim; jigging for fish; touring the coastline; diving for lobster, which they will cook for you, along with the fish that you've caught, on a grill at a private beach; to visit a waterfall; or, they will put together a tour including all or any of the above. We highly recommend it. You'll have a true Costa Rican experience!

There's a modern grocery store just 15 min. south and Jaco (20 min.) has many great places to shop.

We have lots more photos of the house & surrounding area that we'd be happy to share with you. Just click on the link below for 'more photos of this home and area'. You can also check out our video online by clicking on the 'virtual tour' link below.

About Larry & Lynn Green

We're a Canadian couple, married for 47 years, who have been travelling to Costa Rica several times a year since 2000. We have 3 married children, 5 wonderful grandchildren and assorted grand-dogs.

Larry & Lynn Green purchased this house in 2005

Why Larry & Lynn Green chose Puntarenas

After travelling throughout Costa Rica for 4 years we decided to buy in Tarcoles. Our decision was based on the fact that it's one of the only places left where you see the beautiful Scarlet Macaws every day. Another important factor was that it's located just over one hour from the San Jose airport, which makes it very handy for us, and our guests, to get to. It's also centrally located for easy access to many of the attractions that tourists want to see.

What makes this house unique

As we're in a small fishing village, not a tourist town or gated community, you will have a chance to see what life in Costa Rica is really like. You'll see fishermen walking down the road with their daily catch, kids playing soccer just down the road, locals swimming in the river at the end of the road, Peepo getting a load of sand with his team of oxen, as well as many other local sights. We have lots of birds, iguanas, butterflys, etc. who come to visit daily, as we've spent time improving the gardens around the pool and at the side of the house in order to attract them. You'll always be surrounded by flowers as you float in the private pool or walk through the property. The views of the sun setting over the ocean, from our raised gazebo, are truly stunning. Many guests have told us that it's the 'room' that they use the most.

A perfect birding holiday base!

  • 5 of 5

Thank you Lynn & Larry for a wonderful January holiday!

For part of our first time in Costa Rica we were very lucky to spend a week with friends who are seasoned birders and who had been to the country twice before. All four of us were delighted with Casa Sammie, with its excellent opportunities for birding on the beach in front, along the river a few steps away and in the trees on the property - not to mention the proximity of Carrara National Park 10 minutes away! It was so nice to come home to this comfortable, clean house and refreshing pool after a morning in the tropical forest for lunch, a swim, and siesta before venturing out for the afternoon. We enjoyed walking around the corner for a meal in the village and being able to buy fresh caught fish and seafood for memorable dinners by candlelight on the patio. We made a point of having our sundowner drinks in the raised gazebo, while watching the sun set over the Pacific. One morning we took a boat along the Tarcoles River with "Fantastic Birding Tours," a smaller local outfit than the ones that search for crocs and they really were fantastic about finding a variety of birds for us.

Patri was an excellent property manager and lovely to deal with, giving us excellent local tips and instant service when the wifi went down temporarily. Ramon kept the pool in top shape in his own unobtrusive way. With the breeze from the ocean and the shaded areas around the house, we didn't find it necessary to use the A/C but it was nice to know it was available if needed.

What a special place this is! We hope to be able to return!

Owner's Response: We are so pleased that you took the time to write this lovely review. It sounds as if you enjoyed all of the things about the area that we love the most. We bought in this area because it's one of the last places in Costa Rica where you can still see Scarlet Macaws every day and, in spite of their loud voices, we're still excited to see them after all these years. We love to hear from people who appreciate what our area has to offer. Patri and Ramon are invaluable to us, as we couldn't do it without them. Thanks again - you're welcome back any time!

Great for Off-The-Beaten-Path Types

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Casa Sammie. Being located in a small fishing town adds a lot of charm, peace and quiet. The elevated cabana was great for eating meals and enjoying views of the ocean and local wildlife (scarlet macaws, iguanas, butterflies, etc.). The garden is beautiful and the pool very refreshing. The house itself is very cozy and accommodated our family of 4 (two adult children). A bonus is the mango tree: it dropped about 8 fresh, ripe mangos a day during our stay - just wash em off and cut em up. Yum.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for taking the time to let others know what you enjoyed about your stay. We really appreciate it! We agree that the mangos are delicious - sadly they're not always ripe at the right time ;-( We hope you can make it back at a time in the future. Cheers, Larry and Lynn

Paradise in paradise

  • 5 of 5

I did not sleep there, but went with mutual friends. Lynn and Larry greeted me as if they had known me all their lives. Not only is their property a beautiful, tropical paradise (am I using this descriptive adjective too much) it is located in a fishing village, not a tourist destination which makes it so much more enjoyable. One practically has to have a basic knowledge of Spanish to take advantage of what this area has to offer. Yes, it is close to Jaco which is a tourist location and is only one hour away from the main Costa Rican airport. Personally, I am hoping to retire to Costa Rica and would definitely consider Tarcoles as my next home.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the good review! We were very happy to have the chance to meet you. Yes, we're off the beaten path, which we feel is one of the best reasons to come and stay. You really get to know the "real" Costa Rica. We've had many guests who spoke no Spanish and they found that the people in the area are very accommodating and they didn't have a problem communicating with the locals. Most of them have a smattering of English. Also our manager, Patri, is bilingual (Spanish/English) and is always available to translate if required. We're hoping to have a chance to re-connect with you if you do indeed make Tarcoles your home!

Best Vacation Ever!!!

  • 5 of 5

The first thing to say is that the pictures do not do Casa Sammie justice. From the moment we pulled up to the house to the moment we left, we were completely amazed at everything Casa Sammie had to offer.

Although I arrived before the cleaning crew finished from the previous guests, I was able to put my bags in the master bedroom and sit by the pool with a book, out of their way. Patricia arrived shortly after to welcome me to Casa Sammie, pointing out the frosty mugs in the freezer that I had to use for the Costa Rican Imperial beer that was in the fridge. As requested, Patricia had the house stocked with some essentials to get us through the first few days, which was a big help. Once we discovered Chepes, the bar around the corner from the house, that's where we ate many of our meals. Everything was cheap, and some of the best food we have ever had. You must get the ceviche, pollo frito, patacones, and ron y coca con lima or Imerial. Everyone at Chepes, worker or patron, was very friendly and nice to talk to. We even got to feed Rex, their gorgeous German Shepherd.

My friend arrived later that afternoon, by service of Gilberth. She said he was fabulous, easy to find in the airport, and willing to make any stops along the way to Casa Sammie. He gave her a Costa Rican history lesson the whole drive, he was a pleasure. If you need a driver, he is definitely the one to get.

The day after we arrived, Patricia came back to the house to talk to us about tours. We booked the canyoning tour, horseback riding with Kevin, and a tour with Gino. Gino and his wife came to the house that afternoon to talk to us about the kind of tour we wanted, and we decided on the whole day tour with snorkeling, hiking, fishing, and dinner cooked by Maria.

All of the tours were amazing in their own rights, but the food prepared by Gino's wife deserves some extra attention. Anyone who visits Casa Sammie must do a tour with Gino and have food prepared by Maria. It is seriously some of the most amazing food we have ever eaten!! Her rice pudding is to DIE FOR!!

All in all, everything about Casa Sammie is perfect. You will not be disappointed. The owners and Patricia are very helpful, always quick to respond to any emails. The wonderful village of Tarcoles is very welcoming and inviting to visitors with Chepes and the many supers within walking distance. We are definitely coming back, our hearts are in Tarcoles! Pura Vida :-)

Owner's Response: This is an amazing review. Thanks a million for taking the time to write it. We're so pleased that you took advantage of the local restaurants and mini-supermarkets. As you found, there's lots to do and see within a short distance of the property. I'll pass on your comments to Patricia, Gilberth, Gino and Maria. We appreciate so much what they do for our guests. We're looking forward to your return. Thanks again! Lynn and Larry

What a wonderful stay!

  • 5 of 5

This is the true Costa Rica. We enjoyed getting to know the locals - even went to several of their soccer games. The house is very nice. We especially enjoyed the gazebo, having coffee in the morning and dinner in the evening. Thanks to Patri , especially helping with reservations and the language. Gino and Maria are super - Gino is the local ambassador, historian and Maria made us some delicious meals. (If you have luggage space, carry some school supplies for the local school. Give to Gino.)

If you like the flora and fauna, I recommend the Carara National park - it's very close. Hire the guide ($10 admission then negotiate with the guide) and enjoy the hike. We also enjoyed Villa Vanilla but it is a bit of a drive with the last part being on a very bad road. Thanks for a great stay. We will be back!!

great place!!!!!!!!!

  • 5 of 5

For my first trip to Casa Sammie, it was awesome. There were 5 of us staying in the house; 2 in the guest cottage and 3 in the main house. The house had everything we needed, the pool and grounds were beautiful. It is a 10 minute walk into town for groceries and eating out. There was only one place to eat, Chepes and the food was very good. Communication was a bit tough but otherwise a good experience. We did the crocodile tour and the tram tour in the rain forest. I loved the crocodile tour, only saw 2 crocs but tons of beautiful birds. the boat ride itself was really nice. The guides were very knowledgeable. The tram tour was Ok but didnt see anything to speak of; would pass on that next time. We were supposed to do a day tour to a beach for snorkeling, fishing etc with Gino but it got cancelled 2 days in a row because of wind and cloudy seas. I would suggest booking this trip early in your stay in case the weather changes and you run out of time like we did. Patri was very helpful with any concerns or booking tours. Would definitely go again. Loved it .

Car: recommended

DISTANCE FROM NEAREST AIRPORT - 1 1/4 hr. by car --

CAR RECOMMENDED? - Yes --

We are located 1 1/4 hrs. drive west of the international airport in San Jose, in the town of Tarcoles. It is about 20 min. north of the major tourist city, Jaco, which is known for its great surfing. As an alternative, you can also drive from the international airport in Liberia, Guanacaste to Casa Sammie in 2 1/2 hrs.

We recommend that you have a car for more flexibility in visiting the many natural areas and parks within an easy drive of the house, such as the Tarcoles river, Carara Park and spectacular waterfalls. Manuel Antonio Park, a beautiful reserve where you can see monkeys, sloths and iguanas is a scenic 1 3/4 hrs. drive south.
