|Minimum Stay||5 nights|
This is a very central, but private, location in the small fishing village of Tarcoles. It's an oceanfront property with a beautiful view of the Pacific and you are able to watch magnificent sunsets from the large covered front porch or raised gazebo. Scarlet macaws fly over morning and evening going to and from their feeding grounds and often spend time throughout the day in the trees on and around the property. You can walk on the beach for miles, sometimes without seeing another soul! Less than a 10 minute drive to the north is the Tarcoles River where you often see huge crocodiles basking in the sun.
The house is very comfortable and has a lovely bar on the front porch. Both front and back have large covered areas to sit under and relax, after a busy day of sightseeing. As an added bonus, our English speaking manager is available to help you out with car rentals, tours or anything else that you need.
Professionally managed with a personal touch by a property owner who cares!
Our manager is very helpful. She will even stock the fridge before you arrive!
You can buy fresh fish for your supper, right off the boats, from the Cooperativa only a two minute walk down the road or, if you prefer, you can go to one of the many restaurants within a few minutes drive. For all your grocery needs, Jaco boasts a new, very modern grocery store.
We are five minutes from Carara Biological Reserve where you are able to hike for hours and view the nesting boxes of the macaws. You will also see many other varieties of birds and animals.
Although our beach is not the best for swimming, due to the effect of the Tarcoles River to the north, there are several good swimming beaches within a short drive. We usually walk on the beach and swim in our private pool.
We are only 20 minutes north of Jaco, a major surfing area, and an easy one hour and 45 minute drive north of the beautiful Manuel Antonio Park where you can see white-faced and spider monkeys swinging through the trees, or perhaps a sloth, moving in slow motion through the branches.
If you are looking for a home away from home, where you can get in touch with nature & see the real Costa Rica, look no further than 'Casa Sammie.
We have a raised gazebo at the side of the house for amazing views of the Pacific & the sunset. At the back is a large covered patio and a beautiful private pool. We've also added a bodega next to the house with an additional bathroom and a third bedroom that sleeps 2 more people. Very nice & private.
Phone, Satellite TV, Full Kitchen, Microwave, Coffee Maker, Refrigerator, Blender, Toaster Oven, Cooking Utensils provided, Linens and towels provided, Clothes Washer, Charcoal Grill (BBQ), Maid Service available for a small fee, Hot Showers & hot water in the kitchen, Air Conditioners in two of the bedrooms.
Activities: Hiking in Carara Park, Golf, Fishing, Wildlife Viewing, Horseback Riding, Sightseeing, Swimming, Surfing, Birdwatching, Zip Line Canopy Tours, Butterfly Farm, Gorgeous Waterfall - hike to the bottom and swim in the natural pools, Crocodile Tours.
Area: We are only a 1 1/4 hr. drive from the airport in San Jose and, as we are in a central location, it is easy to take many tours and excursions.
Tours, Shopping and More Photos: Don't miss a tour with a local fisherman. Gino, of Tico Style Tours, or Nema, are neighbours who will take you - fishing for a day; to beautiful white sand beaches for a swim; jigging for fish; touring the coastline; diving for lobster, which they will cook for you, along with the fish that you've caught, on a grill at a private beach; to visit a waterfall; or, they will put together a tour including all or any of the above. We highly recommend it. You'll have a true Costa Rican experience!
There's a modern grocery store in Herradura, just 15 min. south and Jaco (20 min.) has many great places to shop.
We have lots more photos of the house & surrounding area that we'd be happy to share with you. Just click on the link below for 'more photos of this home and area'. You can also check out our video online by clicking on the 'virtual tour' link below.
We're a Canadian couple, married for 47 years, who have been travelling to Costa Rica several times a year since 2000. We have 3 married children, 5 wonderful grandchildren and assorted grand-dogs.
Larry & Lynn Green purchased this house in 2005
After travelling throughout Costa Rica for 4 years we decided to buy in Tarcoles. Our decision was based on the fact that it's one of the only places left where you see the beautiful Scarlet Macaws every day. Another important factor was that it's located just over one hour from the San Jose airport, which makes it very handy for us, and our guests, to get to. It's also centrally located for easy access to many of the attractions that tourists want to see.
As we're in a small fishing village, not a tourist town or gated community, you will have a chance to see what life in Costa Rica is really like. You'll see fishermen walking down the road with their daily catch, kids playing soccer just down the road, locals swimming in the river at the end of the road, Peepo getting a load of sand with his team of oxen, as well as many other local sights. We have lots of birds, iguanas, butterflys, etc. who come to visit daily, as we've spent time improving the gardens around the pool and at the side of the house in order to attract them. You'll always be surrounded by flowers as you float in the private pool or walk through the property. The views of the sun setting over the ocean, from our raised gazebo, are truly stunning. Many guests have told us that it's the 'room' that they use the most.
Our stay @ Casa Sammie was wonderful, everything we expected. Patri was awesome in helping us with our outings. The Zip Line was quite the adventure. Nema & Kevin showed us a great time, very handsome and polite young men. Hope to visit again in the near future.
Thank you Lynn & Larry for a wonderful January holiday!
For part of our first time in Costa Rica we were very lucky to spend a week with friends who are seasoned birders and who had been to the country twice before. All four of us were delighted with Casa Sammie, with its excellent opportunities for birding on the beach in front, along the river a few steps away and in the trees on the property - not to mention the proximity of Carrara National Park 10 minutes away! It was so nice to come home to this comfortable, clean house and refreshing pool after a morning in the tropical forest for lunch, a swim, and siesta before venturing out for the afternoon. We enjoyed walking around the corner for a meal in the village and being able to buy fresh caught fish and seafood for memorable dinners by candlelight on the patio. We made a point of having our sundowner drinks in the raised gazebo, while watching the sun set over the Pacific. One morning we took a boat along the Tarcoles River with "Fantastic Birding Tours," a smaller local outfit than the ones that search for crocs and they really were fantastic about finding a variety of birds for us.
Patri was an excellent property manager and lovely to deal with, giving us excellent local tips and instant service when the wifi went down temporarily. Ramon kept the pool in top shape in his own unobtrusive way. With the breeze from the ocean and the shaded areas around the house, we didn't find it necessary to use the A/C but it was nice to know it was available if needed.
What a special place this is! We hope to be able to return!
Wonderful location if you love nature, a quiet and private place. Property really spotless when we arrived. Not luxurious, set apart the beautiful garden. We are not disappointed because that's exactly what we wanted and especially exactly what is described in the rental form, no bad surprise. We did not miss anything and everything was very comfortable and clean. The security cameras on the outside (which you have control) insure your tranquility . The staff; Patry the manager of the house (a caring person who is always ready to make your stay more pleasant, but always with great discretion.), Frank & his Father Ramon who take great care of the garden and the pool also took care of safety and in all discretion. we did not felt monitored at any time but very safe. We felt as if we belonged to that house. It is clear to us that Larry & Lynn owners are proud and that is reflected throughout the house in & in the garden. We have been always ( all inclusive travelers ) and it was a first experience with a rental home. Larry & Lynn we want to thank you, for helping us to discover our new way of traveling. Pura Vida!

Pura Vida!

This was our second visit to Casa Sammie. From the moment Gilberth met us at the airport, everything was perfect, yet again! As previous reviews stated, repeat guests are greeted as though they are family. Gino made a quick visit the day we arrived to help us with a tour, and yes, please, if you can fit some extra school supplies as a donation in your luggage, do so and Gino will bring them to the school for the kids. Although we weren't able to see any whales this time, we did, however, catch some insanely large fish! We felt like we were reeling them in for HOURS! (although only a few minutes in reality) Gino and his helper filleted and cooked the fish on the beach for our lunch, so delicious! And be sure to have Gino teach you how to cut the pineapple the way he does, you'll be sure to impress your family at home!
This time, we hired Gilberth to be our tour guide for the day. He is prompt and ready to go from the start! We saw white faced monkeys up close! Also, we took the bus, which was very easy to navigate, to Jaco and a taxi back to Chepes. Plenty of sightseeing, shopping, and good food there. Be sure to book your tours with Patri, she knows everyone and gets a great price for you. The other girls did the adrenaline junkie tour, and they raved about it, not to be missed!
As expected, Ramon and Frankie are the best ninjas ever when it comes to caring for the property and the pool. Patri is only a phone call or email away, always ready and willing to help at the drop of a hat.
Chepes still has some of the most amazing food you'll find in Tarcoles. The patacones, pollo frito, and ceviche are top notch.
All in all, still the best vacation place I have yet to find. Everything is first class, from the people to the food to the property at Casa Sammie. I can't wait to return!
We just returned home from a most relaxing week at Casa Sammie. The lush tropical grounds are absolutely incredible and are picture post card worthy!
The house is just as described and pictured. No, it's not a five star hotel so don't expect that. That's not what is described in the listing and it's not what we paid for. It is very comfy and cozy. The mattress in the main bedroom was VERY comfortable! The a/c in the bedroom did a wonder job keeping us cool at night too. It is very efficient and only takes a short time to cool down before bed time. I have to admit, we didn't trust that at first and probably let it run more than we needed. We enjoyed the private pool daily and the iguanas would sun by the pool as we swam.
The beach was somewhat of a disappointment but shouldn't have been. It was described pretty well. We were surprised at how much trash washes in and is just left there. Tarcoles is not a tourist area and does not have the resources for maintaining the beaches. We did not get in the water. The house sits low but the gazebo is great for looking out over the water. The scarlet macaws were plentiful and were fun to watch fly over and feast in the almond trees.
Take advantage of the tours available thru Patri as they are same as advertised ones but she gets discounted rates. The horseback riding on the beach with Kevin was awesome! Highly recommend! Also did Jose's Crocodile tour and well worth going!!
Patri is a perfect hostess as she makes herself as accessible as you need her to be! Very responsive and helpful! She even helped us with finding a Pharmacy in the next town.
The location of the house is such that you have to drive thru the edge of Tarcoles which is a low income fishing town. It opens your eyes to the local way of life and living conditions to be sure. We ate at Chepe's and also lunched at the fishing cooperative just down the road. You can buy fresh fish here too!
We never encountered anyplace that did not accept US dollars. Expect to pay premium prices if eating out, especially at the nicer restaurants. The small local sodas we found to have great food for very reasonable prices. Jaco is a short drive south on main highway and offers huge variety of restaurants as well as shopping. Even found the Maxi Pali which is a small Walmart. The small local markets have the best fresh foods. Produce and such.
All in all, a great week and would definitely come back to Casa Sammie!

I had a great experience right from the beginning of booking my vacation at Casa Sammie. The owners were great about answering all my questions quickly and the booking process and payment went smoothly. I am a woman who often travels alone and I felt very safe staying at their house. Patri the manager, as well as Ramon the pool caretaker, and Frankie the gardener and handyman, took very good care of me. The house is right on the ocean and although the swimming isn't the best in that area, it's great to sit in the raised gazebo and look out at the fishing boats and the amazing sunsets. There's always a breeze. The beach is great for walking, to the south, and there are several good swimming areas within a short drive or a longer walk. The private pool is great and well taken care of daily by Ramon. For me the best part was being so close to nature. I saw Scarlet Macaws every day as well as many other birds, including the Yellow-naped Amazon Parrots. I also saw many iguanas and other small lizards and a saddle-backed anteater. Just sitting out the back and listening to the birds and admiring the gardens is so relaxing. The gardens are gorgeous and well maintained. I had ripe mangos as well as starfruit and bananas from the property. It's so nice being in a typical Costa Rican village instead of in a tourist town. You really get to see how the average person lives, especially the fishermen. This is a fishing village and the people are not really well off but any I met were very friendly and helpful, even if I had trouble at times with the language. You don't need to be able to speak Spanish, as Patri can help out when needed, and Frankie also knows some English. It's great fun carrying on a conversation. I didn't have a car but was able to get pretty well everything that I needed in town and I also took the bus into Jaco one day to do a bit of tourist shopping. It was very easy, as the bus runs frequently, and it's an easy walk to the corner to catch it. I ate several meals at Chepe's, the local bar/restaurant and it was inexpensive as well as great food. I also got take-out at the soda just at the end of the street. Their casados (a typical plate with rice, beans, salad, and a meat or fish) are really reasonable and good. I would really recommend this house to anyone who wants to get off of the beaten track and have a real Costa Rican experience. You won't regret it.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Casa Sammie. Being located in a small fishing town adds a lot of charm, peace and quiet. The elevated cabana was great for eating meals and enjoying views of the ocean and local wildlife (scarlet macaws, iguanas, butterflies, etc.). The garden is beautiful and the pool very refreshing. The house itself is very cozy and accommodated our family of 4 (two adult children). A bonus is the mango tree: it dropped about 8 fresh, ripe mangos a day during our stay - just wash em off and cut em up. Yum.
